The Au Pair
by Emma Rous

Seraphine Mayes and her twin brother Danny were born in the middle of summer at their family’s estate on the Norfolk coast. Within hours of their birth, their mother threw herself from the cliffs, the au pair fled, and the village thrilled with whispers of dark cloaks, changelings, and the aloof couple who drew a young nanny into their inner circle.

Now an adult, Seraphine mourns the recent death of her father. While going through his belongings, she uncovers a family photograph that raises dangerous questions. It was taken on the day the twins were born, and in the photo, their mother, surrounded by her husband and her young son, is beautifully dressed, smiling serenely, and holding just one baby.

Who is the child and what really happened that day?

One person knows the truth, if only Seraphine can find her.

In this epic novel set in the small Iranian city of Naishapur, a retired judge and his wife, Bibi, grow apples, plums, peaches, and sour cherries, as well as manage several generations of family members. The days here are marked by long, elaborate lunches on the terrace and arguments about the corrupt monarchy in Iran and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. And yet life in the orchard continues. An uncle develops into a powerful cleric. A young nephew goes to university, hoping to lead the fight for a new Iran and marry his childhood sweetheart. Another nephew surrenders to opium, while his widowed father dreams of a life in the West. Told through a host of vivid, unforgettable characters that range from servants to elderly friends of the family, To Keep the Sun Alive is the kind of rich, compelling story that not only informs the past, but raises questions about political and religious extremism today.

99 Percent Mine
by Sally Thorne

Darcy Barrett has undertaken a global survey of men. She’s travelled the world, and can categorically say that no one measures up to Tom Valeska, whose only flaw is that Darcy’s twin brother Jamie saw him first and claimed him forever as his best friend. Despite Darcy’s best efforts, Tom’s off limits and loyal to her brother, 99%. That’s the problem with finding her dream man at age eight and peaking in her photography career at age twenty—ever since, she’s had to learn to settle for good enough.

When Darcy and Jamie inherit a tumble-down cottage from their grandmother, they’re left with strict instructions to bring it back to its former glory and sell the property. Darcy plans to be in an aisle seat halfway across the ocean as soon as the renovations start, but before she can cut and run, she finds a familiar face on her porch: house-flipper extraordinaire Tom’s arrived, he’s bearing power tools, and he’s single for the first time in almost a decade.

Suddenly Darcy’s considering sticking around to make sure her twin doesn’t ruin the cottage’s inherent magic with his penchant for grey and chrome. She’s definitely not staying because of her new business partner’s tight t-shirts, or that perfect face that's inspiring her to pick up her camera again. Soon sparks are flying—and it’s not the faulty wiring. It turns out one percent of Tom’s heart might not be enough for Darcy anymore. This time around, she’s switching things up. She’s going to make Tom Valeska 99 percent hers.

But when her parents catch her kissing her girlfriend Ariana, all of Rukhsana’s plans fall apart. Her parents are devastated; being gay may as well be a death sentence in the Bengali community. They immediately whisk Rukhsana off to Bangladesh, where she is thrown headfirst into a world of arranged marriages and tradition. Rukhsana realizes she must find the courage to fight for her love, but can she do so without losing everyone and everything in her life?

ONTD Original: Hollywood Men dating girls much younger than them

I figured this is long over due. I only included 5 relationships and I'm sure there are more. So leave them down in the comments.

1. Joel Madden and Hilary Duff

-They began dating in the summer of 2004 when Duff was 16 years old and Madden was 25 years old. They broke up in November of 2006. The media treated them like couple goals even though there was a 9 year age gap between the 25 year old Madden and the underage Duff.

Source

2. Lindsay Lohan and Wilmer Valderrama

-They also began dating in 2004 when Lohan was 17 and Valderrama was 24.

Source

3. Milo Ventimiglia and Hayden Panettiere

-They started dating in 2007 when Hayden was 18 years old and Milo was 29 years old. They broke up in 2009. When asked about the relaionship Milo said "Never do it again. There are things that happen to you in your life that shape who you are." No mention of him dating an 18 year old though.

Source

4. Beyonce and Jay Z

-A power couple today but I wonder how folks would feel if an 18 year old Beyonce dated a 30 year old Jay Z today? hmm

Source

5. Paul Walker and Jasmine Pilchard-Gosnell

-They began dating when Walker was 33 and Gosnell was 16 years old. Walker passed away and it seems like his legacy is about him driving fast cars in the Furious franchise while everyone forgets he was dating a teenager at the time of his death.

Source

OP Note: I don't really post a lot. So I'm sorry for any formatting issues. I also wanted to add Leonardo Dicaprio but I feel like he needs his own post since every single one of his girlfriends has been much much younger than him. Also I know there are/were couples with much wider age gaps but I wanted to focus more on the ones where the man is in his late 20s/early 30s and dating a teenager and why when they were dating there wasn't a bigger deal about it?

ONTD ORIGINAL: Five 90s Film Heroines Getting Their Revenge

$

0

Have you ever wished you had a moment where you mic-dropped out of a conversation? Or gotten back at someone after years and years of shower conversations with yourself? Here are five cinematic moments like that from five films from the 90s.

1. Muriel’s Wedding (1994): Rhonda proves to be the bestest friend Muriel could ask for.

In the 1994 Australian classic film that launched Toni Collette and Rachel Griffths film careers, Toni stars as the titular Muriel, an ABBA and marriage obsessed social misfit who follows her mean girl friends to Hibiscus Island. There she bumps into Rhonda (Rachel Griffiths), an old class mate who laments about how the mean girl group made her life hell in high school and how she wishes she could get them back, cue the most savage smack down in Australian cinematic history.

2. Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion (1997): Romy and Michelle confront Christie Masters

Romy and Michelle head back to Tuscon, Arizona for their 10 Year High School Reunion, where they get the bright idea to make up the fact that they’ve invented post-its to impress their old classmates, especially the popular “A-Crowd” headed by Christie Masters. Unfortunately their plan unravels, leading Christie to humiliate them during the reunion, until Romy and Michelle decide to finally confront Christy in their home-made Vogue approved outfits.

3. Ever After (1998): Marguerite FINALLY gets punched in the face.

In the best Cinderella Film Adaptation of the last 100 years (come at me), Drew Barrymore stars as Danielle, the orphaned daughter of a merchant who has grown up as a servant in the care of her cruel Step Mother and her two daughters. After one of her step sisters, Marguerite, insults the memory of Danielle’s mother, Danielle finally snaps.

4. Addams Family Values (1993): Wednesday’s Thanksgiving Play

After being tricked into getting sent to Summer Camp by their gloriously psychopathic nanny Debbie Jellinsky (Joan Cusack), Wednesday is force cast as Pocahontas in the Camp director's racist white-washed Thanksgiving play. During the performance, Wednesday and Pugsley band together with the camps other misfits to hijack the Thanksgiving play to be more historically accurate.

5. Harriet the Spy (1996): Harriet’s Revenge

Harriet treats her spy notebook like a personal journal and is horrified when her class nemesis Marion Hawthorn finds it during a game of bumper tag, and reads out Harriet’s mean private thoughts on her bests friends and class mates to them. Ostracised and bullied by her whole class which have created a “Spy Catchers Club”, Harriet decides to get them back one by one, saving the biggest gut punch monologue for Marion Hawthorn in the girls bathroom. (Lol i can only find the revenge scene in Spanish.)

My first ONTD original. I have been lurking for 100 years, may as well contribute. Got inspired to write this after watching Muriel’s Wedding and thought this would be a fun discussion post, a lot of these movies actually have multiple smack downs, but I chose my favourite. What are you favourite cinematic smack downs ONTD?

This is part 2. Link to part 1

1. Wilmer Valderrama and Demi Lovato

-Wilmer is making his second appearance on this list (OP note: this won't be his last). Wilmer began dating Demi in January of 2010 when Demi was just 17 years old and he was 30. Wilmer apparently told Demi to get away from him because she was only 17. I guess he knew he was a predator. He dated her anyways.

Source

2. Henry Cavill and Tara King

-While a bunch of folks thirst after Superman, they should probably know they're far too old for him. Henry Cavill began dating 19 year old Tara King in 2016 when he was 33 years old. Before breaking up, Henry claimed that Tara "took the weight off of his shoulers when the world gets too heavy" I'm sure that's exactly what a 19 year old should be doing.

Source

3. Chad Michael Murray and Kenzie Dalton

-The former One Tree Hill star (and noted Nobody now) proposed to Kenzie Dalton when she was 18 years old and a senior in high school. He was 25. His divorce to Sophia Bush had not been finalized at the time of proposal. They apparently met in 2005 when Dalton was an extra on One Tree Hill.

Source

4. Rene Angelil and Celine Dion

-Rene began dating Celine when she was 18 years old and he was 45. As if that's not predatory enough, he was her "manager" and "mentor" beginning from when she was 12 years old and he was 38.

Source

5. Diddy and Cassie

-Diddy was 37 years old when he began dating a 20 year old Cassie in 2007. They didn't go public with their relationship until 2012. I wonder why.

Source

6. Brian Austin Green and Megan Fox

-In 2004, 30 year old Brian Austin Green began dating an 18 year old Megan Fox after he appeared in Hope&Faith.  Not sure what a 30 year old and an 18 year old have in common but I'm sure Megan was very "mature" at 18 and is an "old soul."

Source

7. Jerry Seinfeld and Shoshanna Lonstein

-In 1993, a 38 year old Seinfeld began dating high school senior Shoshanna who was just 17 (OP Note: most sources I have seen says this relationship began when she was 17 but according to the E! article linked, they claim it started when she was 16)

I feel this Original is long overdue and was inspired when someone recently confused PubLIZity gifs for Schitt’s Creek gifs. I feel a good portion of ONTDers are familiar, but every so often someone asks where that gif or quote is from so let’s revisit this favorite. Unfortunately, PubLIZity wasn’t its own show, it was a skit regularly featured on the Kroll Show that starred comedian Nick Kroll and aired on Comedy Central. The sketch comedy show ran from January 16th 2013 until March 24th 2015. Jenny Slate was a reoccurring guest on the show and is best known for her role as Liz B. alongside Nick Kroll who plays Liz G. The two BFFs open up their own PR firm and name it, PubLIZity, based off their names. Let’s take a look back at some of the funniest moments and quotes.

Liz B. announces that she's pregnant, but Liz G. has trouble accepting the news graciously.

Memorable Quotes

“The cat’s pretty much out of the bun.”

Liz G. takes a drastic step after her new haircut doesn't receive the reaction that she was hoping for.

ONTD Original: Male actors who have worked with Woody Allen

Actresses have been questioned about why they worked with Woody Allen, but OP wants to know why do these men not get questioned/have to answer the same questions as their female counterparts? So here is a partial list of actors who have worked with Woody Allen and have said nothing. Maybe next time they have any press to do they'll get asked, but I doubt it.
1. Justin Timberlake: worked with Allen for 2017's Wonder Wheel

2. Steve Carell: worked with Allen for 2016' Cafe Society
3. Anthony Hopkins: worked with Allen for 2010' You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger

4. Jesse Eisenberg: worked with Allen for 2016's Cafe Society and 2012' A Rome With Love
5. Tom Hiddleston: worked with Allen for 2011's Midnight in Paris

6. Jude Law: worked with Allen for 2018's A Rainy Day in New York

Other names:
Joaquin Phoenix who worked with Allen for 2015's Irrational Man. Corey Stoll who worked with Allen for 2016's Cafe Society and 2011's Midnight in Paris. Liev Schreiber who worked with Allen for 2018's A Rainy Day in New York. Josh Brolin who worked with Allen for 2010's You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger.
ONTD Do you think these men will ever have to answer for why they worked with Allen or will they skirt on by like all men usually do? Also are you surprised by some of the names on the list?

1a.jpg
People love reading predictions for the new year, but does anyone go back and fact check those predictions? Let's see what famous psychics predicted for 2018 and see how their predictions stacked up with reality.

From psychic Paula Roberts:

2a.jpg
Prediction: Harry and Meghan announce pregnancy - a boy - in August.
Reality: True-ish. Harry and Meghan announced Meghan's pregnancy in October. No word on the gender.

From psychic John Cohan:

Prediction: Caitlyn Jenner makes a movie.
Reality: False. A couple of TV appearances, but that's it.

Prediction: J.Lopez marries A.Rodriguez. Short lived. Forget anniversary cards.
Reality: False. They still seem to be going strong.

Prediction: David Duchovny. New young girlfriend. New TV series. So, newly happy.
Reality: False. He really only had the X-Files going on in 2018. He is dating a younger woman, Monique Pendleberry (24), but it looks like they got together in late 2017. Is he happy? Who knows!

From psychic Frank Andrews:

Prediction: Tom Cruise gets close to an Academy Award.
Reality: Mostly false. Mission Impossible: Fallout is his only actor listing on IMDB for 2018. Interestingly, I did find a few articles arguing that he should be nominated for an Academy Award, but it's not looking likely. Mission Impossible may be up for some technical awards.

Prediction: Taylor Swift settles on one guy.
Reality: True, but not new. She was with Joe Alwyn through all of 2018, but they've been together since 2017.

Prediction: Brad and Angelina find love - but not with each other.
Reality: Probably false. Brad was linked with two women in 2018: Neri Oxman, an MIT professor and Sat Hari Khalsa, a "spiritual healer". Angelina has been linked to "a British billionaire."  In love? Who knows.

ONTD Original: Fans Accuse Youtuber Taylor R's Husband of Running Sketchy Site

Fans of youtuber Taylor Richard, an ex-model turned vlogger from Canada, discovered that her husband (Tom Lip, commonly referred to as 'Elbow-San' by her fans) owns a company called 'MensClub.' On the surface, this page appears to be a generic Maxim style website for men in Hong Kong. However, it was soon noticed that there was section for girls 'under-18', a feature called 'Schoolgirls that we fxxed', and a mysterious 'private zone.'

Translation of this page, according to one fan:

In the past, Taylor has worked with Mensclub (The archived copy of an interview she did with them, a post from MensClub fb page of an event she did with MC, and a screenshot of a vaguely suggestive photo of her from the same page) so she is fully aware of the business.

MensClub also recently featured an article discussing a 13 year old swimsuit model on their page. The photos are taken from her instagram, but I will let the translation of the text provided by one user speak for itself.

Some fans took to instagram to question her husband, and he became defensive before deleting many of his replies.

Taylor has yet to comment on the subject.

ONTD Original: The floppy year of Steve Carell

$
0
0

People may be thirsting for Steve Carell these days, but lately, his looks seem to be all he has going for him. Since leaving The Office, Steve has moved towards more dramatic roles and the results have been.... eh. Sure he got an Oscar nomination for Foxcatcher (a good movie dont @ me), but its been mostly flops. Especially this past year. Lets take a look at all the pretty poor career choices of our old pal Steve:

LAST FLAG FLYING
-- This actually came out in 2017 but that last flag was surely flying and bright ass red!! The Richard Linklater drama was a complete non-starter. Premiering at the NY Film Festival, the drama received pretty okay reviews (65 on Metacritic) but flopped big time at the box office, barely grossing $1 million worldwide! More people have talked about Linklater's next film, Where'd You Go Bernadette?, this past month than during the entirety of LFF's release window.

BEAUTIFUL BOY
-- This real-life story about a father dealing with his son's drug addiction is another festival film met with average reviews (63 on Metacritic). Steve tried but none of his big dramatic moments worked and all praise went to Timmy instead. The film made $9.7 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. Fun fact: Steve's ex in the film is Amy Ryan aka Holly from The Office. Not the reunion I bet fans were expecting. Also PSA don't do drugs.

WELCOME TO MARWEN
-- A WWII pilot loses his memory and creates a fictional doll village to deal with his PSTD. Anyway, the film completely bombed. Critics called it off-kilter and ill-advised, giving it a 40 on Metacritic. Audiences didn't care for the film either, grossing an awful $4 million during the Christmas 5-day weekend. Universal originally planned to spend $120 million(!!!) to promote the film but slashed it in half after test screenings went so poorly. The studio is still expected to lose $50+ million on the film. The documentary the film is based on, Marwencol, was much better received and it probably worth more of your time.

VICE
-- The movie based on the devil himself, Dick Cheney, is completely insane. One of the worst is Carell's performance as Donald Rumsfeld. Completely over the top to the point of parody, even if it's an accurate portrayal. The film has an average score on Metacritic (61) but has been very divisive. Still hasn't stopped award voters from nominating it. Maybe the Razzies will do the same for Steve. As of today its made $30 million at the box office.

So what do you think of this flop year ontd? Should he go back and do an Office revival now?

ONTD Original: The worst performances of 2018

$

We may be in the middle of celebrating the best performances of the past year, but not everyone is that lucky (and some are given a false impression that they were actually good). Here's a handful of the trash, flop, embarrassing performances put out this past year by a variety of people.

MALIN AKERMAN AND JAKE LACY, RAMPAGE
-- We're bad CEOs who want money and biological weapons. Watch us be evil and perform our lines like wooden dolls.

FERGIE, THE NATIONAL ANTHEM AT THE NBA ALL-STAR GAME
-- The definition of "doing too much".

EVERYONE ASSOCIATED WITH GREEN BOOK EXCEPT MAHERSHALA ALI
-- It's so trashy everyone gets mentioned! Not you though, Mahershala.

GRETA GERWIG, ISLE OF DOGS
-- What we're not gonna do is have a white girl with an afro who is a foreign exchange student serve as one of the heroes of the story while everyone around her is Japanese.

ZACK MULLIGAN, MINDING THE GAP
-- Zack is just a piece of shit and should be ashamed of the way he shown in this doc.

BRETT KAVANAUGH
-- Brett interviews for the Supreme Court, admits he's a sociopath rapist with a drinking problem instead. Another embarrassing moment for America.

JASON BATEMAN'S APOLOGY TO JESSICA WALTER
-- Last May Jessica Walter admitted during a group interview with her AD cast that Jeffrey Tambor verbally abused her and Jason Bateman could not give a shit less about it. His later apology comes off so fake and phony it must be included.

ONTD Original: 5 Moments with Tom Holland 2018

A new year brings both reflection of the past and anticipation of the future. As a rising star of sunshine antics, Tom Holland soared through 2018 with many moments. Many of which were broadcasted to the world through social media.

The Prince of InstastoryTM is no stranger to sharing his life on social media, ranging from the smaller moments of his everyday life to the more accomplished moments of his career. His dosage of intimate instastories has only added fuel to the curiosity of fans who are interested in peaking behind the curtains of his life. Whether intentional or not, it is a strategy to maintain his connectivity, desirability, and relevancy with the world.

While the past year brings to mind big beats such as his iconic performance of rihanna on lipsync battle, various appearances for marvel promo, serving an anthony mackie roast on a long overdue platter, and the ever dodging question of zendateyea-zendatenot, the ONTD Original presents five of the smaller beats* that may have been overshadowed.

*admittedly these are not all from 2018, but who's paying attention or reading these excerpts

1. RESCUING A LOST DOG

Tom Holland and his friend, Harrison, found a lost dog who has been wandering around his hometown for a few days. They snatched the dog and spread awareness through social media by posting updates. After playing around with the lost dog in their home, they took him to the vet. Will the lost dog find its owner?

2. MOUSTACHE

Tom Holland shared some of his facial routine (plus a black mask), explaining his facial hair, or lack thereof, is sparsely sprinkled around his chin and calling himself a "rat boy" when left unattended.

Photos of infamous 'rat boy'

He doesn't seem to be fond of the look either

He jokingly called his moustache a 'football moustache'

3. OSCARS

Tom Holland and Gina Rodriguez were presenters during the Oscars 2018 for the Visual Effects category.

Before the event, Tom Holland shared some behind the scenes preparations from make-up application, practicing his lines, and even instaliving on the red carpet.

4. 'I BROKE A NAIL'

Tom Holland breaks a nail and shares how painful it is. We been knew.

5. BULLY CAMPAIGN

Tom Holland revealed in an interview that he was 'bullied pretty badly' in school because of pursuing his passions. 'I had my rough patches. There was times when I was bullied about dancing and stuff... But you couldn’t hit me hard enough to stop me from doing it.' In fact, despite the reception of some of his peers, his pursuit landed him a role from being scouted in one of his dance classes.

During their press tour for Spiderman: Homecoming, he and his fellow castmates were involved in a bully campaign such as the video he posted on his social media and other videos like the one below

And now, it can arguably be said that his passion for dance, including ballet, is one of his adored attributes that separate him from some of his contemporaries. There is something to be said that keeping true to yourself will more than likely add personality, depth, and interest to your character through life.

Speaking of dancing, a quick detour. As a babe, he was inspired to bust a move from one of Janet Jackson's bops. From then on, he took dance classes ranging from ballet into other forms of dancing with his current interest with 'hip hop'.

WHAT'S NEXT?
While the last year has been his biggest year yet, the next years are expected to be even greater with notable titles such as the book to film adaption Chaos Walking with co-star Daisy Ridley, and reprising his role as Peter Porker in two cash grab Marvel films Far From Home and Endgame. Most interesting of all (besides The Devil All the Time due to personal interest in chevans/tholland) is his role as a young Nathan Drake in Uncharted*

2019Chaos Walking
2019Avengers: Endgame
2019Spider-Man: Far From Home
2019Spies in Disguise
2019Onward
2020The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle
2020The Devil All the Time
?Uncharted*
?Beneath A Scarlet Sky
?The Modern Ocean
*Comments about Uncharted will be reserved for another post. Stay tuned.

Tom Holland isn't dusting into irrelevancy any time soon. Depending on the success of these projects, he may be around for a while as one of the next token boys for box office cash marketed towards a younger, thirstier demographic.

While it's easy to write off Tom Holland's accomplishments in numbers and titles at just 22 years of age, the same accomplishments brings its own dread of heightened anxiety, pressure, and insecurity that accompanies all at that age. Overall, it appears that his strong loving relationships with his family and friends will help lift the burden on shoulders besides his own.

While his likeability may be hard to pinpoint on a single factor, Tom Holland seems to be a level-headed fool who enjoys having fun without becoming too self-inflated in obnoxiousness despite his fame and success.

A long wait for a sequel: an ONTD original

Sometimes a movie’s ending seems like it’s set up for a sequel, other times a sequel that you didn’t know you wanted (or even needed) comes along years & years later.

This post was inspired by the multi-decade gap between Mary Poppins & Mary Poppins returns.

Jane and Michael Bank are faced with the prospect of a new nanny, they are pleasantly surprised by the arrival a magical Mary Poppins. Inspired by the books series by Pamela Lyndon Travers.

Now an adult with three children, Michael Banks learns that his house will be repossessed in unless he can pay back a loan. His only hope is to find the missing proof of valuable shares that his father left him years earlier. Just as all hope seems lost, Michael and his sister receive a surprise when Mary Poppins returns to save the day

Time between sequels: 54 years.
Was it worth making? Well, so far Mary Poppins returns has a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes so I’d say yes.

Epic drama focuses on the life of Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara during and after the U.S. Civil War. Based on the novel by Margaret Mitchell.

A 4-part TV mini series where Scarlett travels near & far to win back Rhett Butler.
Based on the novel Alexandra Ripley, who supposedly used Mitchell's notes for the book.

Time between sequels: 54 years.
Was it worth making? With a 6.5 rating on IMDB roughly equivalent to 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, that would indicate yes. But as someone who watched it, I’d say no.

When a tornado rips through Kansas, farm girl Dorothy and her dog, are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz.

After shock treatment Dorothy is back in the land of Oz, and finds the yellow brick road is now a pile of rubble, and the Emerald City is in ruins.

Time between sequels: 46 years
Was it worth making? With a 53% on Rotten Tomatoes& as someone who saw it I’d say no.

A former police officer workings as a “Blade Runner” is hired to hunt down a fugitive group of replicants in a futuristic Los Angeles.

A new Blade Runner for the Los Angeles Police Department unearths a secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him to find a former Blade Runner who's been missing for decades.

Time between sequels: 35 years.
Was it worth making? With a 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, apparently the answer is yes.

Luke Skywalker battles Darth Vader to save his comrades in the Rebel Alliance and defeat the Galactic Empire.

Decades after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, the galaxy faces a new threat from the First Order.

Time between sequels: 33 years. I know some of you are thinking weren’t there other movies? 1. They were prequels and 2. The less said about those, the better.
Was it worth making? With a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes the answer is apparently yes, although some old-school fans may disagree.

Cinderella & the direct to video/dvd Cinderella II: Dreams Come True-- 52 years.

ONTD Original:
10 Pop Performances to Remember from the 2010's

2019 barely started, but between the Dua Lipas, the Post Malones, the Ava Max's... there's been a LACK of flavor in the live performances from new pop artists today, so it's safe to assume we can close in this decade. I know people always long for the way pop used to impact culture pre-turn of the millennium and y'all always gettin bored of award ceremonies, but there were recent commendable deliveries that were fun and exciting.

🎤

Here's 10 pop performances from this past decade that served legendary and monumental moments.

10. "Piece by Piece" (2016)
Kelly Clarkson
This was a special performance because this was supposed to be the finale of American Idol as a series before being picked up again two years later. And what's the best way to close the show than with season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson.

Some people felt some type a way about the Piece by Piece album artwork (which I don't personally see the issue but whatever), but this emotionally raw 2016 performance of the title track left no dry eye in the room. The performance surged a 4777% gain in digital sales for the song, and became a top ten hit on the Hot 100.

9. "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life" (2012)
Spice Girls
Girl power, people power, whatever you call it, we're always here for the best thing the UK has to offer: the Spice Girls. Now the Spice Girls were rumored to be Olympic performers since their 2007/2008 reunion tour, but they still surprised us in the London Olympics despite Legend Victoria calling it quits to the music industry a few years prior.

They came back to form with LED taxis and costumes matching their og spice identities, starting with "Wannabe" and then riding on top of the taxi cabs for "Spice Up Your Life". The joy, the energy, the fun, the iconography...

The performance afterparty was apparently full of shenanigans - Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell apparently walking in Mel B peeing in the bathroom, the girls celebrating other British performers with the likes of George Michael, Muse, and Oasis... but Victoria was not pictured in any of these moments (she probably went home early that night).

The performance is the most viewed musical performance on the Olympics Youtube page, so no wonder the girls are still able to be #booked and #busy today with their Spiceworld 2019 Reunion Tour sans Posh Spice - who thought the Olympics performance was the best way to close the chapter of the band's history and achievements.
R.I.P 5-piece Spice Girls

8. "Made For Now" (2018)
Janet Jackson
Miss Janet came back from a 7 year musical break in 2015 with the underrated Unbreakable. That era and her you tried it tour was called short because she wanted to start a family with her then billionaire husband. And whatya know - she divorced him with rumors circulating that the marriage was not all peaches. but people only saw her collecting her coin instead of leaving a toxic situation, but whatever!

Fast forward 2017, Janet resumed touring with the State of the World Tour and came back as the fierce and vibrant Janet we know and love (and goodbye to those drop crotch harem poopy pants).

Janet released the upbeat "Made For Now" in 2018 that really marks a new and hopeful stage in her career. The video was bangin and was brought to life in this performance on Jimmy Fallon. Deservingly collectin ha awards for the past year, Janet proves she's an active living legend.

7. "Rolling in the Deep" (2012)
Adele
2011-2012 was phenomenal for Adele. That era was special for an artist like her too, as most pop artists at the time were chasing edm and dubstep, and were trying to catch up with Gaga in terms of theatrics (I guess being inspired by Grace Jones and avant garde was a thing then 👀).

Adele was a breather in that state of pop, and the diamond album 21 brought immense success. Okay, so maybe she's not the most outstanding vocalist and maybe she doesn't deserve to be categorized in the r&b-soul genre as some outlets would, but this 2012 performance was a comeback performance after Adele had microsurgery for her throat in late 2011. That night, Adele swept 6/6 Grammys for the categories she was nominated in - tying Beyonce as the most Grammys won by a female artist in a single night.

6. "Make Me Feel" (2018)
Janelle Monae
Miss Monae has been FLOURISHING this decade and truly evolved as an artist. Yes she still rocks her signature tux, but the colors, hairstyles, fashions, silhouettes, and performance styles became more flamboyant for Janelle since "Electric Lady", and Dirty Computer has been a big era for her too.

Listen, she's a solid performer who can sing and dance. This performance on The Voice was surprisingly """controversial"""because homophobic middle America was pressed and thought it was risque, which is hilarious because even with the spandex this was a pretty safe performance. But it's not surprising because Janelle has always been about self-expression and speaking up for the marginalized. I won't care if DC does not get any Grammy's, but Janelle Monae should still be getting her recognition no matter how much people are trying to take away from her.

5. Sound of Music Medley (2015)
Lady Gaga
Gaga has been one of the better performers in this generation, and has notable performance this decade such as her 2010 Grammy performance with idol Elton John, the 2011 Grammys Born This Way performance, and her Superbowl performances. She's done pop, jazz, heavy metal, and this Sound of Music medley at the Oscars showcased another side of Gaga - primarily as a vocalist.

The gag with Gaga is that she always had the talent and commitment, but it still transpires to the public at different times. 2013 was a rough era for her where she made poor career decisions, split with her longtime manager, and ultimately confessed she wanted to quit music at one point. But with the helping hand of Tony Bennett and Elton John, she was in music rehab mode in 2014-2015 covering jazz and doing tributes such as this one. Gaga was an unconventional choice for the anniversary of The Sound of Music. Nonetheless, the performance slayed - meeting a standing ovation and Julie Andrews' praise and approval. Apparently she took 2 months of vocal training prior, and it definitely paid off. We stan good technique!

4. 48H of Allie X (2015)
Allie X
Canadian pop legend Allie X comes through with the concepts, the music, and anthems. The 48H of Allie X was a two day sensory-stimulated unraveling of Allie Hughes' debut under the new stage identity. She performed the entirety of her first collection of songs from Collxtion I, and presented impressive style, brooding themes, and solid talent.

Allie X has a soft soothing tone, but with her theatrical and classically trained background, she can pull off vocally demanding songs like her arena rock ballad "Sanctuary" - which she played as a finale. And what a song of choice. You can do yourself a favor if you like pop and appreciate talented pop artists, and watch her entire first concert to witness the STAMINA. (Buy Collxtion I, Collxtion II, and Super Sunset - out now!)

3. "Glitter in the Air" (2010)
Pink
P!nk has been a trailblazer for always pushing herself in live settings, because they can come with a cost. I'm not sure if this was her first performance using ha acrobatic abilities but 2010's "Glitter in the Air" performance is revered as one of the most stunning televised performances.

She begins with singing in an all white ensemble, and makes her way into the middle of the arena where she she twirls around as she's suspended into the air. Not many performers would challenge themselves to LIVE singing like this, which takes grace and great strength to make look effortless. You can get an idea of what was going through her mind during this performance in this Oprah interview.

2. Coachella (2018)
Beyonce
Beyonce is another artist with recent notable performances like at the Superbowl, as well as her medleys of self-titled and Lemonade at the VMA's. Her headlining Coachella performance was historic - this is the most viewed Youtube livestreamed performance, and she was the first black female to headline Coachella. She paid tribute to HBCUs with a large marching band, step dance segments, and using bleachers as her main stage design.

There wasn't a lot of tricks and stunts, stage changes nor visual screens to carry the show through. Its live aspects primarily came from the performers, which gave an organic feel. She had cute moments like inviting her sister onstage for "Get Me Bodied", former bandmates Destiny's Child, and her aspiring rapper husband. It is a remarkable two hour show to remember.

1. "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" (2015)
Aretha Franklin
2015 Kennedy Center honoree Carole King was given a tribute by Aretha for co-writing "A Natural Woman". It was a full circle moment where Franklin was a frequent attendee to the ceremony, and received her honor in 1994.

Aretha simply gave us an Aretha performance - carrying her purse on stage (she used to demand to be paid cash for her performances), taking her fur coat off at the climax of the song, and served raw emotion that had everyone crying and cheering by the end (Carole was giddy, and I think Obama was a lil teary eyed).

There will never be another like her, R.I.P Queen Aretha!

Kpop Post: The 25 best Kpop songs of 2018

$
0
0
(According to the OP)
Only title tracks, one song per group (including subunits)

25. UNI.T- No More

The girl group that came out of The Unit (filled with former and members of nugu groups) delivered a solid reggae jam with a provocative dance, sadly they got ignored by S.Korea but not by the OP

24. Gyeong Ree- Blue Moon
The leader of 9 Muses, makes her solo debut with an autotuned song, serving looks (with a problematic one in a wheelchair), choreography and men in high heels! (a true ally).

23. (G)-Idle- Latata
After Cube threw my girls CLC in the trash, they debuted new girl group (G)-Idle, that delivered a fun bop (with a sprinkle of culture appropriation) in Latata, Soyeon had the charisma and the talent to make them win several show titles. (Pop/Stars is one of my fave bops of the year too...but since it was a collab i didn't include it)

22. TWICE- What is Love?
Although "Yes or Yes" was also a fun bop, the music video for "What is Love?" is what won them a spot in this list. TWICE is too powerful (but they also need to take a freaking break)

21. GOT7- Lullaby
A bop, a choreography, and a decent song after a bunch of crappy title tracks (except Look)

20. LABOUM- Between Us

LABOUM ditched the cutesy image to give us a sensual bop. The choreography was on point and they're looking gorgeous in the MV. They didn't get a win for this song, but this improvement didn't go unnoticed.

19. ACE-Take me Higher
Rookie group ACE ditched the short shorts for crop tops in this comeback. The song was perfect for the summer and the MV was full of fun and colorful imagery.

18. Super Junior - Lo Siento ft. Leslie Grace
Super Junior really came through with this trilingual song that features miss Leslie Grace. Impressive how it features a lot of Spanish and not some random words here and there, and the beat fitted perfectly with all the Latin-inspired tracks that were released in the Summer.

17. IZ*ONE - La vie en rose
Produce 48 gave birth to one of the most successful groups to come out of idol-maker shows. "La vie en rose" is sweet and salty at the same time, the girls look stunning in the music video and the choreography is great.

16. Gugudan - The Boots
Gugudan were robbed of a win with this song, the intro, and the dance break are great, Sejeong steals all the lines but at least the girls look great! The Puss in Boots never looked better! Perfect song to drive around town!

15. SoRi- Touch

1/2 of Cocosori shined on her debut as a soloist with track "Touch", delivering fun choreography, vocals and a cool vibe. SoRi shines in her solo debut (creating jealousy of bandmate Coco, and a mess after it). The video is fun and flirty (a little pervy at times) with a weird Ariana Grande reference/ripoff in the middle.

14. BoA - One shot Two Shot
She might've walked upside down in "Woman" but the chorus of this song is what sold me...wait was "Cameo" released in 2018 too?

13. GWSN - Puzzle Moon
This "4 walls" inspired track came out of nowhere, the glossy and high-quality music video is top notch and the choreography is fun.

12. Key - Forever Yours ft. Soyou
SHINee's Key gave us one of the best albums of 2018 (those are the facts)

11. Pristin V - Get It
Underrated track, with probably one of the best bridges in pop history.

10. SF9- Now or Never

OP wasn't aware of this group, but after listening to "Now or Never", we stanning. The chorus hits you in the face, and that guy with the sexy deep voice? swoon!

9. LOONA YYXY - LOVE4EVA
Made me a Chuu/Yves stan, it's just a freaking fun song, and although I did love "Hi High", YYXY takes the cake.

8. NCT 127 - Baby Don't Stop
Taeyong is probably the sexiest man in Kpop, his vocal fry, and smooth moves sold this track like no other NCT 127 song.

7. Sunmi - Siren
Trying to decide which Sunmi song to pick for this spot was hard, but "Siren" was the winner. The MV is corky and sexy just like Sunmi, and the styling was magical!

6. Red Velvet - Bad Boy
Visuals! Looks! Choreography! Joy looking like a snack! Irene being gorgeous! Seulgi being badass! Yeri being cute! and Wendy... also that gay-baiting. A true BOP!!

5. APRIL- Oh my Mistake!

After being ignored for cutesy, cookie cutter concepts, April came back swinging with an edgier look and a corky sound. The music video is all nostalgia but the track is amazing, but that unexpected break is the true star!

4. EXO - Tempo
Kai in a crop top, Lay's cameo, and that acappela delivery out of nowhere? ICONIC

3. APINK- I'm so Sick
Girls changed their concepts to give us this amazing song. Naeun's visuals are in another level and although the MV might be a little basic, the track is one of the best APINK's title tracks ever.

2. Hyolyn- See Sea
Sistar's disbandment left me devastaded, but Hyolyn picked up the slack and gave us the song of the summer. The instagram filter on the MV, the choreography and those power vocals are clear examples of why Hyolyn is a power house.

1. Momoland - Bboom Bboom / Pentagon - Shine

This tie is because there was a lot of factors with both of the songs to occupy the first spot. Momoland's track remains iconic, not only was it played all year long, but it also made JooE a true star! We love a success story about Nugu groups winning (even if accused of cheating) Momoland beat the odds and became viral! an incredible achievement.

Pentagon's "Shine" made me fall in love with the blush/sunburnt look that E'Dawn had, as well as made me fall in love with the band. The song is great, the mv is really cute and all the members bring something special to the table. Sad about the outcome of E'Dawn's faith in Cube, but no one can deny that Shine is one of the best Kpop songs released in the last couple of years.

ONTD ORIGINAL: Shows Disney Should Totally Put On Disney+ This Year

$
0
0
It’s 2019, and Disney+ is finally coming to take our money and give it to the Mouse Empire, unless you’re like some people and (allegedly) live a pirate’s life.
While shows such as The Mandalorian, a Monsters Inc. TV show, and various Marvel shows for the side players are in development, what about their older, iconic shows?
Here are some shows The Mouse House would have to have for me to cough up some green. Not counting currently airing shows like Ducktales, Big City Greens, Star vs. The Forces of Evil, or Milo Murphy's Law.

A show that was, for all intents and purposes, far too ahead of it’s time, Fillmore! was a cop-crime drama. Extortion, bum raps, kidnapping, threats, hostage holding, death of the author - Oh yeah, it was also animated and took place in an extremely extensive middle school following a league of safety patrollers. The main characters of Fillmore and Third are no-nonsense law abiding citizens, and quite possibly, the last good cops.
The parody style placed on thick line art and the serious tone on middle school problems gives a hilarious air of absurdity that works spectacularly well. & Orlando Brown could probably use some of those residuals.
Some Episodes: The Shreds Fell Like Snowflakes, A Cold Day at X
——-
If you’re asking yourself what the hell Right Now Kapow is, you’re not alone. It’s got that ugly The Problem Solverz style but without being as busy and irritating as that show.
It was actually pretty funny, but lasted only a season.

Some Episodes: Honestly, I don't remember. It was an animated sketch show in the vein of SNL for children.
———
Kim Possible, the high school freelance hero/vigilante. Popular, competent honor student fighting a variety of middle aged criminals with her sidekick/best friend Ron. And everyone knew she did this shit, too, that's what made this so refreshing! It didn’t necessarily get “deep”, but it was always an action-packed blast.
In “honor” of her live action DCOM hitting small screens next month after last being seen nearly 12 (!!!) years ago, Kim Possible and her 4 seasons deserve to be seen as intended (animated, cool, snappy), and since they’re not on Youtube in any decent audio quality, this would be the perfect location for The Girl Who Can Do Anything.
And it would introduce a new generation of kids to Christina Millian!
Some Episodes: Return to Camp Wannaweep, Stop Team Go

Leave it to the black cartoons to “keep it real” with topics like Islamophobia, selling out, Kwanzaa, and obnoxious people in wheelchairs played by Shia LeBeouf, The Proud Family. It’s still the only Disney animated show to be exclusively produced by Disney Television’s animation branch (It was produced by Jambalaya Studios by one Bruce Wayne [I know] Smith, who was also a supervising animator on many hand drawn Disney films!).
It also features notable black actors and singers in guest roles like Gabrielle Union, Solange, Al Roker,  Mariah Carey
Some Episodes: Hip-Hop Helicopter, Romeo Must Wed (with Dante Basco, of course!)

From “Paul and Joe” comes another series that holds up remarkably well, Recess. It’s like Fillmore! but with the spirit, trials, and tribulations of childhood as opposed to adolescence that parodied a wider variety of genres. The bright art and imagination of children touching upon things like fads and video games makes this still a relatively timeless show.
P & J’s followup, Lloyd in Space could be on the service too. I mean, I’m not in charge, if Iger wants to put it on there, go ahead. It just wasn’t as good as Recess.
Some Episodes: One Stayed Clean, Economics of Recess
————

Oh, Motorcity. Not nearly as old as many shows on this list, and chronically shortlived, even shorter than Fillmore!
Why? Not because it took place in the futuristic apocalyptic underground wasteland of Detroit, but because Disney XD would air the new episodes, yes the NEW ones, at 12 AM. On Monday.

Why.
The series ran for technically less than a year, cancelled before it even concluded (Though, thankfully, we got all of the episodes aired). While Titmouse Studios is trying to get the rights back to continue it with a company who cares, maybe Disney+ is just what they needed to jump-start a second season.
Some Episodes: The Duke of Detroit Presents, Battle for Motorcity

I really could have added so many more - The Buzz on Maggie, Fish Hooks, Phineas and Ferb, The Replacements, Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja, Teamo Supremo, Wander Over Yonder, The 7D....but I'll leave it to ya'll to bemoan "How could you miss [show that came out in the 90s when I was like 3], OP?!"

Androgyny is nothing new in Hollywood or life, but it does seem that more women have been wearing menswear-inspired cuts and styles lately. I, for one, am here for it. This post is a simple celebration of smoking hot women in fashion that ranges from tomboy to butch.

Like many women on the list, she plays in both sides of the gendered clothing spectrum, sometimes wearing cocktail dresses and ball gowns (like at her 2017 wedding!) and other times rocking a suit or slouchy jeans.
