Indie Film Release Guide: January 18th [An ONTD Original]

Glass, the sequel to M. Night Shyamalan's 2016 film Split being released this weekend, doesn't face any competetion from major studio releases, but the indie slate is pretty full. If none of these float your boat (and since it's January, that's pretty likely), check your local listings for end of 2018 films you may have missed, like Mary, Queen of Scots,If Beale Street Could Talk, and On the Basis of Sex.

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia and Disney. Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have just opened near you: January 11th, January 4th, December 28th.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly

What you should know: You might not think of this as an indie, which is perfectly understandable. But since it wasn’t released by a major studio, it makes the cut for the purposes of this post. Also of note: it made 7 million dollars last night.

The Heiresses



Stars: Ana Brun, Margarita Irun, Ana Ivanova, Nilda Gonzalez
Writer/Director: Marcelo Martinessi
Genre: Drama
Plot: Chela and Chiquita, both descended from wealthy families in Asunción, Paraguay, have been together for over 30 years. But recently their financial situation has worsened and they begin selling off their inherited possessions. But when their debts lead to Chiquita being imprisoned on fraud charges, Chela is forced to face a new reality.
What you should know: This is Paraguay's official Oscar entry in the Foreign Language Film category.

We've heard of the alleged Katy Perry and Katy Keene possibility which has been very convincing, but what if the same rings true to Gaga who might also be taking from fictional superhero legend Sailor Moon? We knew Gaga has kept an eye out on Geri Halliwell's antics to help push her career, so maybe it's not a far off idea people would steal from anime characters.



From the villains and main characters - here are 13 examples of Gaga taking cues from the TRUE guardian of the galaxy's show.

Ariana Grande: Not 'Just A Tan'

For years, there have been much talk of Ariana Grande's ease into her appropriation of cultures that are not hers. Sadly, this discussion - which is being had by black women and Latinas (a lot of whom are genuine fans of Ariana's music) - has barely touched mainstream.

Ariana Grande's more rabid fans have managed to take these criticisms and turn them into meta jokes, reducing them down to mere memes. Some of them claim that she was pressured to bleach her skin for her role as Cat Valentine in Nickelodeon's Victorious (this post will debunk that).


[OP Note: none of the photos in this post will aim to alter the reader's perception. Ariana is wearing white pantyhose in the left photo and is in a slightly darker room in the right photo. Note that the unevenness in her tan can be spotted on the top of her arm (right photo). Small proof that this is not her natural skin tone, like many fans claim.]


Why pick on Ariana Grande? There have been an alarming number of popular artists before her who have made a career out of their appropriation and have gotten away with it. Even if our culture hadn't shifted, this simply would not (or should not) excuse Ariana Grande, Jesy Nelson, or any other artist for doing it. At the height of 'blackfishing', we are long past enough is enough.

- Joan discovered Ariana can sing when she was around 4-5 years old.
- Her parents invested in her talents, putting her into theatre and appearing in local productions before making the move to Los Angeles when she was 13.

SUMMARY: Little Italian white girl with a big voice, born upper-middle class to educated white parents. Attended private schools, but dropped out of high school when she started working well in LA.

When Ariana was 13 years old, she told playwright Jason Robert Brown that she wanted to incorporate an R&B sound to her parts in the original cast album for the Broadway Musical, 13. Ten years later, he wrote a Time Feature on Ariana Grande, stating that she would be underestimated because she's "a white girl who wants to sing R&B" and for "dating a rapper". Blogger Allyssa Golden of allyssacapricam summed it up a lot better than I could:

Ariana Grande has the luxury of switching off her AAVE speak whenever the situation seems appropriate to her. Whether that's because it doesn't go with her 1950s housewife aesthetic (2009-2011), she's marketing to white American or Japanese audiences (esp during 2012-2014), or because she wants to be heard or taken seriously.

Black folk who speak AAVE don't have that luxury and are instead dismissed as uneducated, poor / absent of class, the list goes on but OP will stop here. Above is a small amount of proof that Ariana Grande takes these racist labels and twists the fact that black people who speak AAVE aren't taken seriously into something of a parody - which white supremecy is charmed by.

If you loved the rivaling documentaries from Hulu and Netflix focusing on the Fyre Festival and the exploration into white collar crime and want to find some more? Below are the trailers for financial misdeeds. Check some of these out if you can and feel free to recommend more!

Dirty Money (Netflix): A six-episode miniseries that deals with some of the biggest financial cons in history including Volkswagen defeat device scams, PharmaBro, HSBC’s cartel and terrorism funding, the biggest theft of maple syrup ever and the corrupt financial ties belonging to the current president.



Betting on Zero (Netflix): A doc that looks into the hedge funder Bill Ackman’s investigation into the pyramid scheme Herbalife, the bullshit wellness company that made money from direct sales and how the company preyed on some of most vulnerable people in the country: low-income, Latino communities.


All the Queen's Horses (Netflix): Sis stole $53 million by her damn self to fund her My Little Pony dreams, meanwhile she left the small city get neglected and go to shit. Yes, lean in ladies, we can do it too!


The China Hustle (Hulu): Investors look to China to grow their wealth and the wealth keeps growing, but what exactly are these overseas companies and are the Westerners being legit? Spoiler: they are not.


Enron – The Smartest Guys in the Room (Prime): This used to be on Netflix for the longest – sorry. But this was a great documentary that explored the flagrant corruption in the American energy company that filed what was once the largest bankruptcy in American history.


Kids for Cash (YouTube): This is possible one of the saddest cases. Two judges doled out exorbitant and pretty cruel sentences for kids. Their parents thought they were just practicing zero-tolerance to curb rebellious behaviors? The real motivation, the judges got kickbacks and commission on each child they sent to the privatized prison.


Too Posh to Pay (YouTube): This UK special displays how the middle class and the rich are really the ones responsible for the most theft. Shouts out to the woman who LOVED being a fugitive - like no shame.


Planet FIFA (Netflix): OP knows nothing about sports except for the awesome snacks involved so learning about this was a flipping doo-hooo-hooo-hooo-zy! This film explores the international corruption and the constant bribery and money making machine that was in the world of football. Apologies as I could not find a trailer for this.

THE hit everyone knows by now. Call him a wedding singer, a nostalgia artist, and maybe a little uncreative for not trying to put his own spin on it, but you can't deny this was a fun hit.

Lido has been very vocal about the influence of r&b (and gospel too?) in his music, but this video for "Not Enough" was quite different for him where he struggle dances doesn't add his signature production style, but makes a direct tribute to the genre giving you New Edition, Boyz II Men, and early Backstreet Boys.

The dancers in this video straight up were cosplaying the background dancers in TLC's "What About Your Friends" video.

ONTD ORIGINAL: (Some) Shocks From the 91st Oscar Nominations

The nominations for the 91st Oscar Ceremony were announced yesterday, and with it came some surprises.

One thing that was not a surprise was the slight derision that came from the internet upon nominating Black Panther for best picture, mainly by people who love every initial Marvel movie that comes out and then realizes that most of them are predictable and samey before the cycle repeats itself again.

Memories are short, after all.

Best Picture also gave us not one, not two, but three movies classified as the bad guys in this year’s race - Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Vice. 3BB whomst?

However, there were some misses people were surprised to see missing. For example….

The second showdown between 2016 heavyweights…will have to wait another year.


Despite showing promise early in the season (Well, one of them at least), If Beale Street Could Talk (dir. Barry Jenkins) and First Man (dir. Damien Chazelle) were absent in both Best Director and the Best Picture categories. Distributed by the much-maligned Annapurna studios, Beale Street skipped Telluride and lost momentum, momentum that lasted far longer than that for First Man.

Song Swaps

Dolly Parton's "Girl in The Movies" (Dumplin) was left out in favor of "When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings" (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs). "Shallow" is winning anyway, so who cares, right?

The Best Animated Feature category is probably the most predictable one this year, but not for the reasons you think.

Despite having a Duo of Disney showings, it’s widely accepted and applauded that the winner will not be Incredibles 2 or Ralph Breaks the Internet, but Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse.

I hope Brad “He was my friend…and they betrayed him. HE WAS MY FRIEND!” Bird is crying into his comments about Lasseter when his movie loses.

It's a Disappointing morning in the Blunt-Krasinski household.

While a song, “The Place Where Lost Things Go”, was nominated (As well as Score, Production Design, and Costum Design) for Mary Poppins Returns, A Quiet Place was only acknowledged for sound mixing.

At least it will win!

Burned Out

Burning even made the shortlist for Best Foriegn Feature, but in the end lost a nomination. It would have lost to the juggernaut that is Roma anyway, but it would have been nice to see it’s presence.

Director Debacle

It’s about time Spike Lee is nominated for best director - for BlackKklansman - but beyond that…What do the following directors have in common;

  • Chloé Zhao (The Rider)

  • Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here)

  • Marie Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)

  • Deborah Granik (Leave No Trace)


Give up? Not one of them is nominated for best Director. While the men nominated are (mostly) very talented, even last year had one lady (Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird). Special mention to Karyn Kusama (Destroyer) - Another victim of Annapurna, the film had one shot at award greatness with Nicole Kidman in the lead role….and it’s a bust.

But the shocked buzz radiating throughout Award Season…Fandom, I guess, is “No Bradley Cooper for Best Director?”

ONTD Original: A look at all the artists who have worked with Chris Brown's messy ass

In light of the recent rape allegations against Chris Brown, I decided to compile a list of artists who worked with him after 2009. Many mainstream artists have worked with Chris. Artists have gone as far to even defend him since repeatedly exposing himself for being the human dumpster that he is. Beating and stalking his past girlfriends have not stopped Brown from succeeding. His recent album debuted #1 on iTunes and has even worked with Tidal to organize a pop up concert back in 2017.

Black-ish

While this post is mainly focused on artists who have worked with Chris Brown, he was also on an episode of Black-ish in 2017. Not the most shocking thing considering Anthony Anderson has also been accused of rape on the set of Hustle & Flow and has been accused of sexual assault on at least two different occasions. The shows creator, Kenya Barris, wasn't available for comment when asked about Chris Brown's involvement in the show. Tracee Ellis Ross, Time's Up ambassador, also deflected from being asked about it and stated that she didn't shoot any scenes with him.

Think Like A Man
Chris had a supporting role in the film back in 2012. The trash novel was written by Steve Harvey, who is such an expert on relationships that he's been married three times. So it's not a surprise that such an awful novel also had Chris Brown involved in the film.

ONTD Original: The accusations against Bryan Singer (Part 1)

Bryan Singer has faced accusations of sexual abuse and assault since the 1990's. That hasn't stopped actors and actresses from working with him even after the 2014 allegations against the director. I compiled a list of the accusations against Singer throughout the years and those who still worked with him despite it all. The first part of this ONTD original focuses on the accusations.

1997:
Back in the 90's, Singer was accused by Devin St. Albin of forcing him and the others to film a nude shower scene. At least five plaintiffs involved were minors and supported the claims against Singer. They also mentioned that they were bullied by the crew into stripping naked. The parents of Devin allege that this was done without their permission and that the wardrobe department instructed the boys to wear peach colored g-strings. Things changed once the boys were on set and were told to remove all of their clothing.

2000:
Back in 2017, a twitter user by the name of Justin Smith alleged that Singer sexually assaulted him. The tweets are now deleted but thank god for the internet. Here are the tweets:
I first met #BryanSinger in 2000. My boyfriend was one of his best friends, so I had many interactions with him. From the first time I met him, he was always on something. He also constantly hit on me, always asking me to show him my dick or ass. When I’d tell my boyfriend about this, he’d say “oh Bryan just gets playful when he’s high”. But we stopped dropping by his house at my insistence. We’d still bump into him at parties. He almost always had a “posse”. This was always him, 2-3 older 50-70 year old men who were obviously on drugs but still wearing their dress shirts & pants (he introduced them as producers) and at least 5 to sometimes 10 young men. I should really say boys, none of them could’ve been older than 16 or 17. They were all aspiring models/actors who were always doped up & partially naked. Bryan always made a point to tell me they were going to his place for a “private party” & asked me to come with them. I said no every time. This same scenario happened 5 times. Every time, the cast was different. Different gross old “producers”, different harem of boys. But every time, Bryan tried to convince me to join, offering me drugs, even offering me a bit part in X Men 2. One night, I asked him who these old men were, & he said “they have a lot of money”. I then asked who all these young guys were & he said, “does it matter?” & laughed. And I laughed back. Yes, I hate myself for it. I don’t really have an excuse. This same situation had played out so many times, & even though I knew what was happening was awful, I think part of me had resigned myself to the fact that this was Hollywood. Speaking out about this was unimaginable then. That same night, in response to all my questions, Bryan again asked to see my dick. I said no. He then asked to feel my ass. After hesitating, I relented, thinking he’d give it a quick squeeze. Nope. He quickly & very aggressively shoved his hand down my jeans & underwear and tried to shove his finger inside me. He had his other hand clamped on my shoulder so I couldn’t immediately move away. He penetrated me for a split second before I shoved him away. I said no, that I just wanted to go home. He said fine, but I’d better not tell anyone because no one would believe me anyway. I absolutely believed this, so I never said anything until now. I never went to any of Bryan Singers “private parties”, but I guarantee the stories of the young men who say they were raped are true. I witnessed the beginning of many of these nights. I wish I would’ve loudly objected to what I saw happening. I also wish I would’ve had the courage to speak out when he sexually assaulted me. It didn’t benefit me at all to stay silent, all it did was allow myself to become disillusioned & bitter. I hope telling this story helps. Not just me, but anyone else who’s struggling.


2003:
On December 7, 2017, another victim stepped forward. Cesar Sanchez Guzman alleged that Singer raped him back in 2003. Guzman stated that he was forced to perform oral sex on the director and raped him on a yacht.

2014:
- Michael Egan accused Singer of drugging and raping him in Hawaii after they met at several parties in the 90's. Egan stated that from August to Oct 1999, Singer flew him out to Hawaii where he repeatedly gave him drugs and raped him. Singer claimed he was not in Hawaii on those dates. Egan also accused Garth Ancier, David Neuman, and Gary Goddard of drugging and sexually abusing him as well. Egan later voluntarily dismissed his claims against Singer.
- An anonymous plaintiff accused Singer and Goddard of sexually assaulting him when he was a minor. The victim was 14 at the time when Goddard, 48, reached out to him. They began a "relationship" online and Goddard introduced the victim to Singer. Goddard and Singer invited the victim, who was then 17, to London to the premiere of "Superman Returns". They took him back to Singer's hotel room where they started to forcibly grab him. When he refused to comply, they brought someone in to beat him up. Singer then forced the victim to sit on him and masturbate. He also tried to rape him.

Recent allegations:
The Atlantic released an explosive piece where four more victims came forward and accused Singer of sexually assaulting them when they were minors. The allegations align with the ones throughout this post even if those lawsuits were dismissed against Singer. Victor Valdovinos also accused Singer of molesting him when he was 13 and was working on Apt Pupil. Valdovinos was using the restroom in the middle school where they were filming when Singer approached him from behind and remarked that he was "good looking". Singer mentioned wanting to hire him to be in the film. On a second occasion, Valdovinos was waiting in the locker room, in a towel, while they were filming. He stated that Singer popped in and was "always" touching his chest. He accuses Singer of reaching through the towel flaps, grabbed his genitals, and started masturbating it. Valdovinos stated that Singer came back throughout the day to molest him.

- In an interview with Vulture, Noah Galvin accused Singer of inviting little boys over to his pool and "diddling" them in the dark of night. Singer's lawyers intervened and Vulture ended up removing the quote by Galvin. It wouldn't be the first time Singer's team intervened. Articles about his alleged sexual assaults were being removed from the internet.

- Bret Easton Ellis also mentioned that two of his former partners attended underage sex parties hosted by Singer and Roland Emmerich. Emmerich has mentioned how they've had "scores" of twinks at the parties they've thrown together. He stated that Singer's NYE party would have 600-700 twinks "running around".

ONTD Original: 6 RomComs with problematic, misogynistic, and/or racist storylines

Here on ONTD, we love our romcoms. Well, at least a good portion does. They have all the common and cheesy tropes that we love and expect. However, some romcoms take things to another problematic level. Let’s take a look at six of them, and yes, I’m aware that there are so many others. This post is so that we can get that conversation going and you’re always welcome to share others you feel should be mentioned and discussed in the comments. :)



The Big Wedding (2013)
Where the fuck do I begin? Brownface, racist dialogue, casting choices, etc. An all-star white cast and nobody said, hey! This seems wrong. British actor Ben Barnes plays Alejandro in brownface, Don (Robert De Niro) and Ellie Griffin’s (Diane Keaton) adopted son from Colombia. He has two siblings Jared (Topher Grace) and Lyla (Katherine Heigl). Alejandro is engaged to Missy (Amanda Seyfried) and her Southern-born parents are less-than-thrilled about their daughter marrying a brown guy and their future “half-beige” grandchildren – as described by Katherine Heigl’s character.

There’s a problem however, his strict catholic birth mother (Patricia Rae) from Colombia doesn’t know his adoptive parents are now divorced and she wants to attend the wedding. Alejandro thinks it’s best to lie to her and have his parents pretend to still be married as to not cause problems with him and his birth mom. The entire film is a mess from beginning to end.





The Switch (2010)
A man named Wally (Jason Bateman) hijacks his best friend’s (Jennifer Aniston) pregnancy by dumping a donors (Patrick Wilson) sperm in the sink and replaces it with his own while completely plastered. He forgets he did it and 7 years later when he meets his son Sebastian, he realizes what he did years ago.

Kassie (Aniston) begins to see Roland (Patrick Wilson) years later, he’s now divorced from his wife after she cheated on him. He wants to get to know his son and soon begins developing feelings for Kassie. He then decides to propose to her, but Wally stops the proposal and tells Kassie the truth. She slaps him, then tells him she never wants to see him again. Some time passes, she waits for him outside his building to tell him that she’s thought about it, Sebastian misses him, and that she dumped Roland because he wasn’t him. They kiss and all is forgiven.



What Women Want (2000)
A film about a misogynistic man named Nick (Mel Gibson) who could sell snow to a snowman and loves to seduce women. He expects to get a promotion at work, but instead his co-worker Darcy (Helen Hunt) gets it. She then asks everyone in the office to test a couple of new feminine products at home. While doing this, Nick falls into his bathtub while holding an electric hairdryer and shocks himself. The following morning he realizes he can hear women’s thoughts.

He uses this to his advantage and steals Darcy’s ideas and passes them off as his own, ultimately getting her fired. He regrets his actions and tells his boss that those ideas were actually her ideas. She’s rehired. After Nick saves a co-worker who contemplated suicide and repairing his relationship with his daughter, he loses his ability in a thunderstorm. Nick then confesses everything to Darcy and she immediately fires him. But later she forgives him, they kiss and get together. Fin.



Never Been Kissed (1999)
Josie (Drew Barrymore) is a journalist who goes back to high school to research an undercover story. She then begins to develop feelings for Sam (Michael Vartan)...her high school teacher. A romantic relationship between the two begin and as far as he knows, she’s underage and you know...his student. On top of that, when Josie is asked to prom by a teenage classmate, she agrees to go. Sam struggles with his feelings because, you know, she’s his student.

During the prom, she confesses everything and Sam feels betrayed. She writes a story about her entire experience and admits that she has never been kissed. The town is moved by it. In that same story, she writes that she will stand in the middle of the baseball field and wait for Sam. Just when it looks like he won’t show up, he appears and the audience in the baseball field cheer as he kisses her. True problematic love.



Overboard (1987)
A rich heiress named Joanna (Goldie Hawn) falls off a boat and gets amnesia. Dean (Kurt Russell), a carpenter she once stiffed on a job on her yacht, sees the story on the news and goes to the hospital to tell her that her name is Annie and that she is his wife. He then uses this as a way to get back at her. He practically enslaves her, making her cook & clean the house and take care of his four boys who make her life hell. Dean slowly begins to fall in love with her and doesn't tell her the truth about her real identity fearing she will leave him. So romantic. She also begins to develop feelings for him and begins to care for his boys.

Her real husband traces her and when she sees him she remembers everything and her memory is restored. Naturally, Joanne is outraged, hurt, and upset that Dean lied and manipulated her, all for revenge. She then leaves and returns with her real husband, Grant, back to their yacht but after a short time realizes her old life is pretentious and boring. She commands that they turn back around and tells her husband Grant she no longer loves him. She forgives Dean and he asks her what he could possibly give her in return. She looks at his four boys and responds saying, “a little girl.” Awwww.

Overboard (2018), a remake starring Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris was released last year where the roles were swapped. Anna’s character instead lies and manipulates Eugenio’s character.



Shallow Hal (2001)
I mean, the title says it all. Hal (Jack Black) is superficial and is only attracted to women who are slim, petite, and conventionally attractive thanks to his father. He gets stuck in an elevator with life coach Tony Robbins, who hypnotizes him to see women for their inner beauty and not their physical beauty. He shortly meets Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow), the daughter of his boss at work. She’s obese but he only sees a slim and beautiful Rosemary. His best friend (Jason Alexander) is concerned in his sudden change in taste of women, and gets Robbins to break the hypnosis.

Hal then starts to ignore and avoid Rosemary entirely, breaking her heart. After another women notices how much Hal has changed and is no longer shallow, she wants to be with him. But Hal realizes that he loves Rosemary despite everything. She forgives him and during their reconciliation, he tries to carry her to the car but he is unable to so she instead carries him. Fin.

ONTD Original: The Celebrity Chefs & Restaurants that fed furloughed workers

Most people know Chef Jose Andres from organizing an effort to feed Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria in 2017. What people don't know, is that Chef Andres founded World Central Kitchen (WCK) after the Haiti earthquake in 2007. He saw that after a disaster, feeding people seemed to be at the bottom of the list of priorities by those in charge. WCK is a non-profit organization that works to end hunger.


Today, World Central Kitchen uses the expertise of its Chef Network to empower people to be part of the solution, with a focus on health, education, jobs, and social enterprise.

Health: Cleaner cooking with clean cook stoves and food safety/sanitation training.
Education: School kitchens to support feeding programs that encourage school attendance and provide a source of sustainable revenue for the school.
Jobs: Culinary training to elevate the hospitality workforce, increase earnings, enhance quality of life, and strengthen Haiti’s economy.
Social Enterprise: Food ventures that increase income, create jobs, and provide transferable vocational skills to low-income communities."




Naturally, the government shuts down and WCK & Chef Jose Andres steps up. They opened a kitchen down the street from the White House to feed furloughed workers. And then, other Chefs opened their restaurants to feed these workers (Full list of participating restaurants). Over the past few weeks, WCK has seen high profile volunteers distributing food like Congressman Joe Kennedy, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Freshman Congresswoman Deb Haaland, David Hogg, Congressman Joaquin Castro, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Congressman Eric Swalwell, and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser.

ONTD Original: Monthly Movie Challenge - February

Another 10-task challenge. You obviously don’t need to do all 10 tasks, choose as many as you want, but I figured it gives you some variety and allows you to pick and choose movies that fit your taste but also maybe lead you to watch something you wouldn’t normally seek out. For each task, you can pick whatever movie fits within the guidelines, I've added links to help you out. I tried to add tasks that would allow you to get movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and/or Hulu – but there’s also Kanopy and Hoopla (both of which you can get free access through your library or university). Have a different movie for each task – that is, don’t have the same movie for task 2 and task 6.


This month I’m doing a theme. The Oscars are February 24th, so all tasks will have to do with past and present nominees and winners.

1. Watch any movie that is nominated for an Oscar this year (in any category, that includes short films) - list here.
2. Over the course of 91 years, there has been 12 movies nominated for Best Picture that were directed by women (that's out of 546 total nominated movies btw). Watch one of these 12 movies.

7. Watch any movie that won the Oscar for Best Cinematography (they used to split it by B&W and Color, watch whichever you prefer).

ONTD ORIGINAL: Your Very Quick Guide to Best Animated Feature 2018

I did this last year, and here we are again; Provided that the Academy doesn't just half-ass voting and give it to Disney, this year's contenders are unusually competitive for the field.

"INCREDIBLES 2"
Dropping the ‘The’.
7.8 score on IMDB, 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, 80 on Metacritic



It’s finally here, the very-long awaited followup to what could be argued as the thing that really brought superhero films to light. No longer were they the silly, corny flicks of the 90’s, but instead smart, funny, and dark.

And this?

Personally, I liked it, but it doesn’t have the focus or clarity of the first film. It’s a modern mindset that nearly doesn’t fit with the 60’s aesthetic (How are you going to complain that people look at screens too much when they arguably only have the television?). With so many characters in the mix, no one really gets the attention or time they need to grow.

The visuals give the Parr family a much-needed update surrounded by cool effects, but it’s nothing others haven’t done since.

TRIVIA:
It took 15 years for this movie to come out. But, you knew that. Bird wanted to make a sequel when he had a story that was as good or better than the original. But I guess he just got tired of people asking about it, and made this instead.

This is also the longest entirely CGI film ever.

Made more money domestically in one weekend (180$m) than Pixar's previous summer release Cars 3 (2017) earned in its entire 20-week release (153$m).


CAN IT WIN?: The Academy only nominates animated sequels if pickings are extremely slim, and this year, they really were. I would bet on this being in 3rd place.

"ISLE OF DOGS"
Who saw this? Besides myself.
7.9 on IMDB, 89 on RT, 82 on Metacritic

King of Twee Whiteness, Wes Anderson, came through with another film in 2018...about talking dogs.
When dog flu spreads in Megasaki, Japan, the mayor sends all dogs to a trash-heaped hellhole - and his ward, Atari, goes to find his dog.

While beautifully animated and scored, the movie really just kind of happens. It has an odd curiosity that makes you want to keep watching if you can make it past the 40 minute mark.

TRIVIA:

Jeff Goldblum recorded his lines over the phone.
Greta Gerwig did both the English and French voice for Tracy.
This is the third stop motion film to be rated PG-13 in USA. (What are the others? Anomalisa was actually rated R)

CAN IT WIN?: It will if the Academy members believe they’re too good to pick another movie on this list that is far, far better.

Princesses!

The Disney film most logically open toward a sequel for reasons that weren’t money actually got one, from the old-school arcade to the new school internet. With the sheer amount of things that were always happening at once in this film, there was, theoretically, something for everyone.

Most people were fairly harsh against the film, citing jokes that would be dated very quickly instead of building on the strength of it’s creativity, because I suppose we all expect (hope) Amazon to collaspe tomorrow. “One big advertisement!” is the common complaint.

And sure, it was not as sharp-witted or clever as the first one, but I enjoyed it a great deal and thought the moral was fabulous.

TRIVIA:
The only living actress to not reprise her role in the princess scene was Mary Costa (Aurora).

Also, Mindy Kaling does not reprise her role as Taffyta, being stuck in the green-screen land of A Wrinkle in Time on the other Disney lot.

This is the first full CGI sequel in the Disney Animated Canon. The second one is coming later this year.

CAN IT WIN?: If it does, then the Academy is truly not paying attention. Put it in 4th.


"SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE"
Yes, you can love Spider-man again.
8.7 on IMDB, 97% on RT, 87 on Metacritic


When Lord and Miller were fired from Solo with much fanfare, they probably walked right across the street to continue writing and producing (not directing!) Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse.

And which film do you remember more? Exactly. This one.

Sporting a poppy, comic-y style and slightly out of focus dazzling effects, this movie truly gets down to the core of what makes a Spider-bitten superhero - helmed, instead, by Miles Morales , first introduced in Ultimate Fallout #4.

Bringing together a multiplicitude of Spider-folk that most of us probably have never heard of to present a stunning spectacle of what it means to wear the mask, this movie surprised absolutely everybody, not only as the best animated movie of the year, but one of the best movies period of 2018.

TRIVIA:
This was the nineteenth theatrical film produced by Sony Pictures Animation. Other films include Peter Rabbit (which I liked), the Hotel Transylvania series, and the best Animated Feature of 2017, The Emoji Movie.

Talk about clean and rad and powerful; The movie was apparently announced during the 2014 Sony hack. I don’t recall if it was in the e-mails alongside Spider-man anti-virus.

CAN IT WIN?: It almost certainly will. It had fucking better.



Just like most of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, I didn’t see MIRAI, unfortunately. So, we can talk about some that missed the nomination.

While TEEN TITANS GO! TO THE MOVIES was funny, it was just another animated riff of Warner Brothers on themselves. Instead of making a 3rd movie about how you can't make a decent live action DC movie, why don't you fix your problem instead? It's no longer clever.

WB also had another animated movie out -- SMALLFOOT. Despite not being awful, it came and went without much fanfare. It was about conspiracy theories that ended up being true and perpetuated out of fear. Seriously! Special shoutout in also not having any song nominations, when Common's "Let it Lie" was actually very good.



See who wins during the 91st Academy Awards on Feb 24th. Well, hopefully they won't deem the category "unimportant" and cut it.

Indie Film Release Guide: February 1st [An ONTD Original]

The poorly reviewed Miss Bala is the only big studio wide release this week, but for you history buffs, Warner Brothers is releasing They Shall Not Grow Old in more theaters after a successful limited release. If neither of those catches your eye, take a gander at this list of indies. Many of the films on this week’s roundup have Rotten Tomato scores over 80%, which is more than I can say for any individual week in January. If nothing here floats your boat, check out some of the Oscar contenders coming back to theaters like Free Solo.

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia and Disney.
