ONTD Indie Release Guide Graphic.png

The big studio wide releases this week - Venom, A Star is Born and The Hate U Give - are all battling it out at the box office, with two of those films having much better Rotten Tomatoes scores than the one that’s gonna make the most money. This week in indies is pretty mellow though, with several docs and lots of genre fare, so it's a good week to catch up on the new releases from the past few weeks. FYI, Colette and The Sisters Brothers are expanding to more cities on Friday, so keep an eye out for those at a theater near you.

The films listed below are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia and Disney. Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have just opened near you: September 28th, September 21st, and September 14th.

ONTD Halloween Original™: 15 Horror & Suspense Movies About Fraternities & Sororities

The Scarehouse© 2014 D Films

"College students have always shown a more or less marked tendency to form themselves into societies."
- William Raimond Baird, Baird's Manual of American College Fraternities

We are led to believe that once we get out of grade school, college will be a breeze. In some ways, that is true. The concept of cliques is a thing of the past as there are too many people on campus to bother with such a thing. Yet there are fraternities and sororities. Say what you will about them as the bad ones deserve all the criticism, but there is an instant sense of belonging once you're accepted into a house. But is that camaraderie enough to save you when the going gets tough? Even dangerous?

Here are fifteen horror and suspense movies set in or about fraternities and sororities.

BLACK CHRISTMAS
1974
Directed by Bob Clark

As the Christmas college break begins, a group of stragglers at a sorority house are subjected to terrorizing phone calls from a madman.

This quintessential Canadian proto-slasher does not comment too much on sorority life. The house just happened to be the setting. There is talk of pregnancy and alcoholism, though. The original Black Chistmas is a suspenseful college slasher that moves at a pace uncommon in modern horror, but the finale is fantastic.

THE INITIATION OF SARAH
1978
Directed by Robert Day

A college student unleashes her psychokinetic ability after joining a sorority.

This made-for-television movie can be compared to Carrie, but The Initiation of Sarah is more of a cheesy drama with some supernatural elements. It does have good acting, however, which isn't a quality associated with TV-movies nowadays. There is a 2006 remake that also stars Morgan Fairchild. Her wet T-shirt scene in the 1978 version caused quite a stir back in the day.

HELL NIGHT
1981
Directed by Tom De Simone

Four pledges forced to stay in an abandoned mansion come to learn that the house isn't so empty after all.

If one can get past Linda Blair's questionable acting, this slasher has a great setting and some creepy atmosphere.

TERROR TRAIN
1980
Directed by Roger Spottiswoode

A costumed killer sneaks aboard a party train on New Year's Eve and murders those responsible for a fraternity prank gone terribly wrong.

Jamie Lee Curtis was building up her "scream queen" cred with slashers like Terror Train. The pranksters in this movie did something terrible to someone else so it's a chore to feel sympathy for them. Terror Train suffers from some pacing problems, but the killer's decision to wear his victims' costumes was creative.

THE INITIATION
1984
Directed by Jock Gaynor, Bruce Lansbury, Scott Winant

When a sorority pledge is told to break into her father's department store at night, she and her friends are targeted by a serial killer.

The middle act's pacing almost does this lesser known slasher in, but audiences that stick in there are bound to be rewarded.

KILLER PARTY
1986
Directed by William Fruet

A sorority's house costume party is infiltrated by a killer.

At one point, this was going to be called "The April Fool," but there already was another teen horror flick by the name of April Fool's Day coming out the same year. Killer Party seems like a by-the-numbers slasher until the very strange ending.

THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW
1983
Directed by Mark Rosman

When the sisters of a sorority mistakenly murder someone, they hide the body on the grounds so they can throw their graduation party in the house. However, someone knows their secret - and they're going to make the women pay for their crime.

The main poster for this movie makes The House of Sorority Row seem like an erotic thriller. Hardly. This taut mystery was a pioneer for the horror trope of people commiting murder and keeping it a secret.

RUSH WEEK
1988
Directed by Opie Cooper

A plucky reporter investigates the disappearance of students during a college's rush week.

This obscure college slasher lacks gore and the kills are done off camera. If fraternity stereotypes from the '80s don't thrill you, the mystery -- once it finally gets going -- may keep you watching.

SORORITY HOUSE MASSACRE
1986
Directed by Justin Lee

A young woman shares a psychic link with an escaped serial killer, who is headed straight for her sorority house.

The premise of this Roger Corman production is a combination of Halloween and Slumber Party Massacre with a paranormal spin. It isn't the most exciting slasher, but there are tense moments sprinkeled throughout the movie.

PLEDGE NIGHT
1990
Directed by Paul Ziller

What should have been a simple frat prank ended with someone being boiled in a tub of acid. Years later, the same frat's new generation of pledges are picked off by someone from the past.

Pledge Night could almost be a screwball comedy of the '80s if not for the sparse slasher elements throughout and more so toward the end. If you really don't find cinematic frat antics hilarious, avoid this one.

NIGHT OF THE CREEPS
1986
Directed by Fred Dekker

A college campus is plagued by alien parasites that use humans as hosts.

From the director of The Monster Squad comes Night of the Creeps, a comedy that combines zombies, aliens, and Greek life. The movie has deservingly earned a cult following, especially after the similarly plotted Slither came out in 2006.

FRAT FRIGHT
1992
Directed by Brian Owens

Two decades ago, a priest murdered a group of fraternity brothers. He then became catatonic and was put in a mental hospital. Today, he's awakened and is back to his killer ways.

The '90s was a tough time for the horror genre. The golden age of slashers was long gone until the advent of Scream and its copycats caused a resurgence. There were some stragglers that were recycling stories and tropes from films that filled seats in theaters. Frat Fright, better known as Happy Hell Night, was one of those pictures oh so late to the game. Jorga Fox (of CSI) and Sam Rockwell have small parts in this average yet amusing enough murder-by-numbers teen thriller.

SORORITY ROW
2009
Directed by Opie Cooper

Years after a small group of sorority sisters cover up a murder, they are all stalked and picked off by an unseen killer.

Horror in the 2000s was basically either splatter films or remakes of cult favorites. Sorority Row doesn't entirely measure up to the 1983 movie it's based on (The House on Sorority Row, if you couldn't figure that out), but on its own, it is very entertaining. None of the characters have any sort of semblance of normal reactions or thoughts, but if you like one-liners and intricate, MTV-style death scenes, Sorority Row is one of the more tolerable, big-budget horror remakes.

BROTHERHOOD
2010
Directed by Will Canon

As part of their initiation, a fraternity pledge and his peers are ordered to rob a convenience store. Things go very wrong, though.

This unheard of thriller lacks horror, but it is suspenseful. Mainly because everyone in Brotherhood makes poor decisions left and right.

THE SCAREHOUSE
2014
Directed by Gavin Michael Booth

Two former sorority members take revenge on their ex-friends after taking the fall for a crime they all committed.

For a movie that cost about 200,00 CAD, The Scarehouse is a pleasing revenge thriller that keeps your attention with humor, revelations, and twists.

ONTD ORIGINAL: 6 of my favorite kpop solo debuts (women only)

I only include women because I don't listen to male idols. I don't count Soundtrack/CF song as a "solo debut" or people that have featured on a song, they also need to be in a group for the solo debut (so I don't count solo debuts that happened after they left the group). And yeah that about it.

Brown Eyed Girls: Ga In - Irreversible & Natasha - Bbi Ri Bba Bba

Album: Ga In - Step 2/4: The album was created with a sexy, spirited, striking and mature theme. It was released on October 8, 2010 and distributed by both Nega Network and LOEN Entertainment. The EP features six tracks in total. It received critical acclaim from music critics, praising its strong tango influence and the "distinctive persona", with some called it "one of those unexpected masterpieces that come around only once every often."

Natasha - Narsha: Featuring a dark and edgy sound, it was released on July 8, 2010 and distributed by Nega Network. The EP features seven tracks in total, including one preview and one instrumental version of the album's title track. It also received positive reviews from music critics, praising its dark theme along with the electronic influence.

4 Minute: Hyuna - Change

Album: Change (Single)

"Change" was officially released on January 4, 2010. The song also featured Beast's Jun Hyung for the rap part. "Change" was a commercial success. The song entered and peaked at number 2 on the Gaon Digital Chart on the chart issue dated January 3–9, 2010. The song stayed in the Top 10 of the chart for five consecutive weeks - its first two weeks at number 2 - and a total of fourteen consecutive weeks in the Top 100 of the chart.

Girls' Generation: Yuri - Into You

Album: The First Scene

Tamar Herman of Billboard described the title track "Into You" as "a rhythmic dance track with a captivating melody". She also wrote that throughout the song, Yuri "plays up her airy tone, vacillating between piano-backed croons and dramatic belts over whirring synths as she pulls back and lets loose, letting her vocals blend with pulsating, rumbling beats, and one-off quirks, like the popping sound of a champagne bottle being opened, to create a soundscape of a dreamy night out". The album was released on October 4, 2018.

2NE1: Park Bom - You and I

Album: You and I (Single)

In 2009 Park Bom released her first solo single "You and I", which took the number one spot on the Gaon Chart for the month of November.[citation needed] It eventually won Best Digital Single at the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards. ONTD Original: Songstress'"Dirrty" Moments!

$

Christina Aguilera's Dirrty music video was so over-the-top that music video channels inserted a warning message before playing it. It was an instant classic - not only in how far she went with the 'Disney to Dirrty' aesthetic, but how it basically acted as a megaphone for her to scream the fact that she was in control of her own image. Unsurprisingly, that message hasn't translated well over the years, and many people now view that video as no more than a slutty rite of passage that every young star will strive towards.

To many awful parents, girls wearing tighter clothes, showing more skin, and wearing makeup = growing up. And no parent is a worse parent than the entertainment industry. Here are five young stars who had their own "Dirrty" moments!

Note to mods: all sources are placed after each subject listed.

Hilary Duff - Reach Out

Hilary Duff made a career out of being above stripping for success, but that's just not really a thing that contains any longevity as a popstar, and she learned that quickly. Her first two videos for the singles off her album Dignity was an example of her pushing that more 'mature' image, but it wasn't until 'Reach Out' (which wasn't released until her 'Greatest Hits' album the following year) that she'd really go for it. She was 21 when the video for Reach Out was released.
LISTEN AT THE SOURCE

Selena Gomez - Hands To Myself

Speaking of making a career out of being above all "Dirrty" eras, Selena Gomez stole Hilary Duff's crown for this one. Out of everyone on this list, she held out for the longest, being 23 when she released a music video where she Stripped down. Even still, with a lack of male-gazey back arches and intense dance moves, this video is quite tame.
LISTEN AT THE SOURCE

Miley Cyrus - Can't Be Tamed

Heavily promoted as The Evolution of Miley (source), fans and haters sat in front of the clock in anticipation for this video. A "Dirrty" video has been expected from Miley well before she turned 18, and audiences wanted to see what she'd come up with for her moment. She was 17 when this video was released.
LISTEN AT THE SOURCE

Lindsay Lohan - Rumors

This was Lindsay's peak: she was "finally legal" (ew), she was hot (physically and in demand), and... this was as good as she got. She was 18 when this video was released.
LISTEN AT THE SOURCE

Rihanna - Umbrella

Good girl gone bad, man. In Rihanna's own words: "I just took the bad girl attitude of everything and I just did a thing my way and didn't really consult with anybody. I wanted to look what I wanted to look like, I wanted to dress and sound what I wanted to sound like. I was just tired of that innocent image that I had, it was just getting a little generic and boring." (source) She was 19 when Umbrella was released.

ONTD ORIGINAL: 6 Songs That Could Be Nominated For Best Original Song At The Oscars

$

Sure, we all know that "Shallow" from A Star is Born will probably be nominated and win, and I'm not mad at it.

There's also probably going to be a song from Mary Poppins Returns nominated, but not a thing besides some trailers is out for that, so who knows.

But there are a few other songs we can imagine being nominated, so here we go.

Jacob Banks - In The Name of Love from The Equalizer 2
Now, I never saw any of The Equalizer movies, so I'm not sure about the context this is used in. But from what I've read, it's a lot better than the movie it's featured in.

Other Possible Nominations: Probably nothing. Imagine if Denzel was nominated for this just to lose to an "alleged" abuser for the THIRD year in a row.

Lil Yachty - Go! Remix from Teen Titans Go! To The Movies

There's actually three versions of this song, two are played in the movie, but this is played in the credits. This movie has a lot of original music, and none of it is really awful, but this is really catchy. I'm biased because I enjoyed this quite a lot.

If you think it can't win because it's a credits song, Coco's Remember Me won last year with its credits version instead of the superior one.

Other Possible Nominations: Best Animated Feature, because that category is looking WEEEEAK af this year.

The Weeknd and Kendrick Lamar - Pray For Me from Black Panther
There's a better chance that Disney is going to push another song on this list over this because I can't imagine a song with the lyrics "I fight God, just tell me, how many murders left?" being nominated. This plays during an undercover mission in a casino.

Other Possible Nominations: Disney is pushing for this in every category - Even Infinity War is only getting a visual effects push - so who knows? Wouldn't Best Picture be awesome.

Kendrick Lamar and SZA - All The Stars from Black Panther

This is the end credit sequence, the only place where the song plays. Relatively bright and peppy compaired to Pray For Me.

Other Possible Nominations: See above.

Céline Dion - Ashes from Deadpool 2

Remember when the first movie was nominated for some Golden Globes? Perhaps it could happen again, and even go all the way to Oscar gold. This has the plus of being a ballad and the minus of being in a superhero movie, so we shall see.

Other Possible Nominations:Stunts? I didn't see this so IDK.

Sade - Flower of The Universe from A Wrinkle In Time

This movie had a weird collection of music, peppered in the film as if it was a collection of music videos and not a cohesive film. I'm not sure if all of it was original, but I know this was. This plays...when the kids are walking up a staircase. I know, it's weird. But wouldn't it be nice to see Sade perform on the Oscar stage.

Other Possible Nominations: Getting an award for not being the worst movie to come out on March 9th.

What else do you think can be nominated?

ONTD Halloween Original™: The Killers' Motives in 20 Slasher Movies

$

Record© 2000 Sam Wu Communications

"Actions are visible, though motives are secret."
- Samuel Johnson

Why do killers kill? That is something every true crime follower wants to know. What was the motive for taking someone else's life? Unfortunately in reality, the answer is never clear cut or one we want to hear.

As for many slasher movies, the motives are almost always very simple. Either from a baser and taboo instinct to kill, or for revenge. The latter is present in most slashers. Rarely the reason is entirely different and unexpected.

Below are twenty horror and suspense movies (with a slasher element) where the killer has a specific motive. Be aware of spoilers.

PROM NIGHT

During prom night, a teenager and her friends are picked off by a masked killer.

As kids, the protagonist and her friends played a game that ended in her sister's death. They never told anyone what happened. However, her brother figured it out and he got revenge for his dead sister. This is why he killed his other sister's friends and tried to kill her as well. Instead he died in his sister's arms.

VALENTINE

Around Valentine's Day, a group of friends begin to get picked off by a killer in a Cupid mask. But why?

When the women in the movie were teenagers, they were mean to a boy named Jeremy Melton. One of the girls even lied and said Jeremy attacked her, which caused him to get beat up by some other students. In the present, one of the now grown-up girls, Kate, is dating a guy named Adam. In the end, Adam turns out to be Jeremy Melton. He framed another of Kate's friends to make it seem like she was the killer all along. With everyone else dead, Kate is left alone with Adam/Jeremy, not realizing the truth.

THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW

When the sisters of a sorority mistakenly murder someone, they hide the body on the grounds so they can throw their graduation party in the house. However, someone knows their secret - and they're going to make the women pay for their crime.

The sisters killed their house mom, Mrs. Slater. What the women didn't realize was that Mrs. Slater had a secret son named Eric. He was living on the grounds the whole time without them knowing it - and he knew what they did to his mother. So he took revenge and murdered the guilty parties. The last victim, Katey, battled Eric in the attic in the finale. She stabbed him, but the wound wasn't fatal as the last shot showed Eric waking up.in proximity of a weak, vulnerable Katey.

MY BLOODY VALENTINE

The young residents in a mining town defy the cautionary legend of a deranged killer, who supposedly murders anyone who celebrates Valentine's Day after a tragedy befell the town two decades ago on the holiday. As it turns out, the legend is true.

The town banned its annual Valentine's Day dance twenty years prior because of a tragedy: two supervisors at the mine left the miners unsupervised so they could attend the town's dance. There was a cave-in that left the miners dead except for one, who resorted to cannibalism to survive. The survivor killed the two supervisors before being hospitalized at mental institution. The survivor swore if the Valentine's Day resumed, he'd return to take revenge. With all that time gone by, the town decides to hold the dance again. Well, the killer isn't happy about this nor is he the mine survivor as everyone suspected - it's Axel, one of the protagonists. He faked his death later near the end in the mine. Axel is the son of one of the slain supervisors, and he wanted revenge for his father after the town resumed the Valentine's Day dance.

TO ALL A GOODNIGHT

Some students at a women's finishing school decide to stay behind over Christmas break. They invite some men over, which is against the rules. Eventually, people start to go missing. The cops are brought in the protect the house, but it's of no use - a killer dressed as Santa Claus is out for blood.

The movie immediately opens with a scene two years before the current story. In it, a young woman is accidentally killed during a prank at the same school. Fastforward to the present day: Mrs. Jensen, the house mother, is the killer. There are two murderers here: she and her husband, who is a police detective. Their daughter was the one who died in the accident at the start of the movie. Viewers can even see a photo of her in Mrs. Jensen's room. The grieving parents never got over their daughter's death obviously. So they decided to kill the students left behind for Christmas. However, none of these women attacked in the movie had anything to do with the Jensens' daughter's death - they just conveniently happened to be there.

FRAYED

When Kurt was young, he brutally murdered his mother. Since then, he has been living in a mental institution. Until he escapes one night, looking to find his family and finish what he started.

During his escape from the hospital, Kurt killed a security guard and stole his uniform. He pretended to be the guard, Gary, and he went undetected throughout the movie. He tried to kill his sister Sara, her mom, and her friends. In the end, Kurt's father Sheriff Pat Baker, shot Kurt in Sara's room. This segued into the revealed truth: after escaping the hospital, Kurt was almost immediately shot to death by Sheriff Baker. Kurt had come to realize that as a child, he was abused by his dad (who wore clown-ish makeup while committing the act). Baker then killed his wife and blamed it on his son to ensure that word of the abuse never became public. The girl "Sara" and her friends and family that Kurt stalked (as "Gary") were not his real sister, etc. They were just the people he saw in a photo every day inside of his hospital room, and he imagined they were Sara and so on. Kurt concocted this whole fantasy to cope with his past. The only things that actually happened were Kurt's escape and his father killing him on the side the road. The other stuff that followed was just part of Kurt's imagination. The movie ends with the sheriff coming home to his new wife and the real Sara as well as his new son. It is hinted that the man was abusing this boy, too.

CURTAINS

When a small group of women audition for a role at a remote mansion, they are systematically picked off by a killer wearing a hag mask.

Of the five women auditioning for the coveted role, two of them were murderers. Uninvited guest Samantha killed the director, Stryker, as well as veteran actress Brooke. Comedian Patti admits she killed the other women so she could win the role for herself. After confessing that, Patti kills Samantha. The movie ends with Patti being checked into a mental hospital.

APRIL FOOL'S DAY

College students invited to a friend's remote mansion on an island are picked off by an unseen killer.

No one killed in the movie actually dies. It was all faked and planned by their host, Muffy. She wants to open a murder mystery resort and she was using her friends as guinea pigs.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

Upon Virginia's return to an elite academy, those closest to her start to suffer grisly deaths.

Four years earlier, Ginny was humiliated when her guests skipped out on her birthday celebration in favor of going to rival Ann's party. The reason why no one showed up was that the community did not like Ginny's promiscuous mother, Estelle. Ginny was dragged by Estelle to Ann's party, but the hostess denied them entrance. This caused Estelle to get drunk and she had a car accident. Ginny survived, but her mother did not. Those guests as well as Ginny and Ann all grew up to be part of the most popular clique, the Top Ten, at their school. Once her friends, including Ann, start dying off, Ginny is thought to be the murderer. Yet there are no bodies left behind. Back early from his trip in time to celebrate his daughter's eighteenth birthday, Ginny's father finds his sedated daughter, the other Top Ten corpses, and his late wife's body inside of a cottage. A Ginny doppelgänger was behind the murders, but it is really Ann disguised as Ginny. The two are half-sisters since Estelle had an affair with Ann's father, and this secret enraged Ann. In hopes of framing Ginny, Ann killed the people who did not come to Ginny birthday party four years ago. The siblings' struggle results in Ann's demise. A detective shows up and asks Ginny, who is holding a knife and singing "Happy Birthday" to herself, "What have you done?"

RECORD

Years after a prank on a classmate went horribly wrong and evidence of the incident was seemingly erased, the high school perpetrators are hunted down by someone who knows their shared secret.

The bullied student is invited to hang out with the popular students close to summer break at a remote cabin. There, they play a prank that ends in his death - they accidentally used a real knife instead of a prop to stab him during a staged home invasion. So the bullies bury his body. The problem, though, is that he didn't die. He woke up while being torched alive and eventually fell to his demise from a cliff's edge. The bullies make a vow of secrecy rather than turn themselves in. As school resumes, the group is menaced with footage of that terrible night (recorded by the bullies themselves) as well as hunted down and tortured. The killer turns out to be the bullied student's sister. However, she did not act alone. Her teacher was her accomplice and he tries to finish what she started at the very end.

INTRUDER

The overnight stock crew of a small supermarket are trapped inside with a killer.

One of the store's owners decided to sell the business. As it turns out, the co-owner, Bill, wasn't too happy with this decision and he killed him and then the employees. At the end, the two survivors are framed by Bill, who claims they killed everyone else. Their fates are unknown as the movie ends.

CHERRY FALLS

The teenage virgins of a small town are targeted by a crazed killer.

The killer is a teacher named Mr. Marliston. He wanted to scare the town's teens into having an orgy, which would cause chaos among their parents. Mr. Marliston's mother was raped by the protagonist Jody's father, Brent, as well as four other teenage boys back in high school. Mr. Marliston was abused by his mother, and he blames Brent and his partners in crime for that. It's implied that one of the rapists - specifically Brent - is his biological father. In the end, Brent is killed, but Jody defeats Mr. Marliston by letting him fall off a balcony and impale himself on a fence post.

BOOGEYMAN 2

Siblings Laura and Henry witnessed their parents being killed by a hooded figure as children. As adults, Laura has a phobia of the Boogeyman, and so does her brother. However, she's checked into a hospital for therapy while Henry goes out of town for a job interview. At the hospital, Laura and the other therapy patients are preyed upon by the Boogeyman.

Unlike in the previous movie, the killer here is not supernatural, as revealed near the end. It is Henry who was killing everyone. As a form of immersion therapy, Henry was locked in a closet by a therapist named Dr. Ryan, and he was forced to wear a Boogeyman mask. This intensified his trauma, even making him become the Boogeyman in a way. Laura thinks she's decapitated Henry, but it was actually Dr. Ryan under the mask. Henry already escaped by the time the cops arrive, and Laura is framed for all the murders.

I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU

Sarah and her mother move from California to a New England town where Sarah is accused of being a witch. Her case for innocence isn't helped as someone dressed in a cloak stalks her classmates.

The town is infamous for killing a supposed witch named Sarah Lancaster. The protagonist is also named Sarah. Her classmates accuse her of being an incarnation/descendant of Lancaster, looking to take revenge on her murderers' five descendants. Who coincidentally are the students that Sarah becomes acquainted with at the start of the movie. Soon, a cloaked figure begins to menace the descendants. Two of them are even killed. Sarah is suspected of being the culprit, but she is not. Nor is it the suspicious teacher, Ted, that Sarah's mom is dating. The cloaked figure is Charlie, the nerdy confidante of Sarah. He himself is the sixth descendant of Sarah Lancaster's murderers because of his mother, who years ago was shunned by the town and forced to leave after she became pregnant out of wedlock. Ted happens to be Charlie's biological father, too. Charlie's revenge had to do with the town's treatment of his mother and nothing at all to do with the curse of Sarah Lancaster. At the end, Sarah alludes that the curse -- killing Sarah Lancaster's murderers' descendants -- is still active and in progress since two of the now six descendants are gone.

SESSION 9

Members of an asbestos cleaning crew begin to disappear during a project inside an abandoned mental hospital with a dark history.

The owner of the asbestos cleaning crew, Gordon, has a psychological breakdown, which caused him to murder his family and then those working with him. It seems as if he has been "possessed" by Simon, one of several personaity states of the hospital's former patient Mary. It may also be possible that at some point, Gordon was also a patient there, and maybe he crossed paths with Mary. This is not confirmed.

POPCORN

During an all-night horror movie marathon hosted inside an old theater, the employees begin to die behind the scenes.

The protagonist, Maggie, is haunted by dreams of being caught in a fire. She and fellow film student Toby devised a plan to raise funds for the department - they throw the movie-thon at a derelict theater. There, they find a copy of Possessor, a movie that Maggie's mother starred in. As it turns out, Toby is the one killing Maggie's friends at the movie-thon. He and his mother attended the premiere of Possessor, where a fire broke out. Toby was badly burned and his mother was killed. So he blamed Maggie and her mother for his past. Toby, who was deformed by the fire, wears prosthetics on his face. This was how he was able to get away with the murders that night. He planned on "finishing" Possessor as intended by completing the last scene on stage - killing Maggie. Luckily for her, Toby died after being impaled by a giant mosquito prop.

THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN

Every Halloween, the small town of Texarkana hosts the annual drive-in showing of the 1976 movie -- The Town That Dreaded Sundown -- based on the infamous 1946 Moonlight Murders. One year, a copycat Phantom Killer chooses his first victim in a series of grisly deaths to come.

This movie is a meta-sequel of sorts to the original movie, and it is not a remake. It treats the original movie as a movie, which is screened in Texarkana every Halloween. The main character, Jami, learns from the original movie's director's son that there was a sixth victim, McCreedy, in the Moonlight Murders, but they were ultimately excluded from the movie. In the end, it's revealed that Jami's boyfriend, Corey, that died in the beginning is one of the two Phantom copycat killers. The two are partners and the other killer is a deputy, Foster. Corey is the grandson of McCreedy, and he is angry that his grandfather's death is not memorialized like the other Moonlight Murders victims. Deputy Foster kills Corey and plans on doing the same to Jami until Jami shoots him. His body is never found by the police.

THE COMEBACK

A famous musician, Nick, ends his musical hiatus after divorcing his wife. As he sets to record a new album at a secluded manor, his ex-wife is murdered by someone in a hag mask at his old apartment. Now, the same killer is prowling the manor.

The hag mask-wearing killer turns out to be the manor's gardener, Mr. B. His wife, Mrs. B, is the housekeeper. They both worked together to get revenge on Nick, who they blamed for the death of their daughter. She was a fan of Nick, but after he got married, she died by suicide. Mr. B. mistakenly kills his wife while trying to attack Nick. As the cops arrive, Nick finds his new girlfriend entombed alive in the manor's walls with Mr. and Mrs. B.'s dead daughter.

DRESSED TO KILL

After an escort witnesses a murder only she saw, she is stalked by the killer.

In the beginning, a patient of Doctor Robert Elliott is killed by a tall woman brandishing a straight razor. The escort, Liz, incidentally witnesses the act. The police suspect Liz is the killer and don't believe her about the tall woman. Meanwhile, Doctor Robert Elliott has been receiving angry messages from a transgender patient, Bobbi, whom he refuses to grant the reassignment surgery she desires. Liz befriend's the dead patient's son as she tries to outwit the tall woman who has been following her. Or so she thinks. In the end, it's revealed that Bobbi is actually Doctor Robert Elliott. Whenever a woman tried to come on to Elliott, "Bobbi" emerged and attacked the woman out of feeling threatened. The tall woman who was following Liz was just a cop assigned to watch over her. Before "Bobbi" can kill Liz, the cop shoots her. Doctor Robert Elliott is put away in a mental hospital in the end, but he still haunts Liz's dreams.

NIGHT SCHOOL

Police search for the one responsible for the decapitation of women at a local college.

All of the victims were killed by Eleanor, the girlfriend of Professor Millett. Eleanor was incredibly jealous whenever Millett spoke to any other woman, including his students. Since Eleanor was also pregnant, Professor Millett helped her escape as the cops showed up at his apartment. Eleanor got away even though the detective on the case figured Millett was covering for her.

ONTD Original: Creepy Characters That Won Us Over (In Film)

ℭ𝔯𝔢𝔢𝔭𝔶 ℭ𝔥𝔞𝔯𝔞𝔠𝔱𝔢𝔯𝔰 𝔗𝔥𝔞𝔱 𝔚𝔬𝔫 𝔘𝔰 𝔒𝔳𝔢𝔯
(ℑ𝔫 𝔉𝔦𝔩𝔪)

There are unconventional protagonists, villain's sidekicks + accessories that turned over to be on the protagonists' side, and other ambiguous characters we sort of grew fond of in film once we recognized the things they experienced and their motives to retaliate against whatever force on them was some sort of poetic justice.

Here are 7 main and minor creepy characters from both horror and family friendly films that we might not have expected to win us over.

Carrie from Carrie (1976)

If you live under the roof of a religious nut job of a mother and go to a school where the gym teachers slaps your face like nobody's business, you'd only wish to have powers like Carrie's telekinesis. And what's with the mother shaming Carrie for having a periodT?
Looking at the circumstances, was what she did all that different from when Matilda took vengeance on Ms. Trunchbull? These are the female icons of survival and anti-bullying/abuse, now who do I call for a cross over movie?

Billy from Hocus Pocus (1993)

We might be getting a reprise role from Billy Butcherson who came to the kids' aide against the Sanderson Sisters. It might not have been feminism-like to kill him off because he cheated on Winnie with Sarah, but they were literally witches of their time. At least in the turn of events in the movie, Billy turned out to be a harmless zombie and got #closure after a few hundred years.

Big Baby from Toy Story 3 (2010)

You can't go wrong with a dingy doll to be the ultimate creepy figure, especially when Big Baby was part of Lotso's evil regime. Big Baby decided to take a stand against grudges of abandonment in the middle of the film, and all was well when the system of the daycare toys was less totalitarian.

Marley from Home Alone (1990)

Like the same misunderstood figure of the pigeon lady continued in Home Alone 2, we did not know how relevant the serial killer down the street Marley would be, until he came in and rescued Kevin. This was NOT the case of a Christmas gone wrong, but just a sweet old man who needed to make amends with his family.

Miss Irvine from The Witches (1990)

The Witches is a heavily underrated movie but I have to admit the film overall was a little too creepy to be a children's movie. Lil girl being kidnapped and stuck in a painting? And the scene revealing how the witches really looked would scar a lot of children.
Apparently the movie had an alternative ending where the boy stayed a mouse, but Miss Irvine - the assistant to Angelica Houston's character of the Grand High Witch - came to the rescue at the end to undo the spell in the final version of the movie. She was not the most prominent character, but the movie did a nice job of showing humanity among the witches through her.

Sloth from The Goonies (1985)

Even after the first few times of watching Goonies I was STILL disturbed looking at Sloth's deformed face. It took a few moments in and a Baby Ruth bar later that we realized Sloth did not mean harm like his family members, despite looking like he did and being as big as he was (Frankenstein's monster teas?). The overwhelming support to the Goonies gang and eccentric enthusiasm left a spot for Sloth in all our hearts.

Angela from Sleepaway Camp (1983)

Sleepaway Camp had [debatable] transphobic/homophobic undertones with the *spoiler* fact Angela was revealed to be born male and had a sex change on her aunt's term. The ending is regarded as 'shocking' but it's moreso bizzare to me because of the odd choice of her having a frozen expression (we know it's irl a mask). Those that were killed under her hands felt justified - a pedophile, three bullies, an irresponsible camp owner, and a boy pressuring her into moving things fast. She was mostly quiet throughout the film but hey, can we really blame her for all the things she went through?

ONTD Halloween Original™: 10 Movies About Bigfoot & Other Similar Cryptids

Exists© 2014 Lionsgate

"Have pity on them all, for it is we who are the real monsters."
- Bernard Heuvelmans, On the Track of Unknown Animals

What lurks out there in the wilderness? Where humans have for the most part vacated for modern conveniences. Every year, there are reports of people seeing tall, bipedal creatures of unknown origin around the world. In the U.S., specifically the Pacific Northwest region. Are we to believe that something as large as these supposed creatures has simply skirted by for decades, maybe longer, without being officially documented? Some say "Yes." Others are understandably skeptical.

Even if there is no tangible proof of Bigfoot's existence, that doesn't stop filmmakers from making countless movies about the animals. Overwhelmingly, these same movies are based in horror and feature the beast attacking or defending itself from humans. Just goes to show that in the end, we are far more dangerous than these beasts of legend.

So here are only ten movies about Bigfoot and other similar cryptids.

THE LEGEND OF BOGGY CREEK
1972
Directed by Charles B. Pierce

A documentary-style look at life in Fouke, Arkansas, home to the elusive Fouke Monster.

This mockumentary was way ahead of its time. It is a slow burn that focuses too much on the humans than the cryptid in question, but there's no denying the unsettling atmosphere in this one. The Legend of Boggy Creek was did so well at the box office ($25 million earned on a $100,000 budget) that it was the 10th highest-grossing film of 1972. Good luck finding a good quality print of this movie as many reproductions are downright unwatchable, or maybe just wait for a remastered release.

SASQUATCH
2002
Directed by Jonas Quastel

When a billionaire's daughter goes missing after her plane crashed in the Pacific Northwest, he constructs a team of experts to find her. In their quest, though, they come across something they never expected. Something elusive and legendary.

For some reason, Lance Henriksen has done at least four horror movies about Bigfoot. Why? Maybe he's a believer. This 2002 movie also goes by the better name of The Untold. The beast here resembles a very tall, bipedal ape with patchy fur. It looks nothing like the one on the poster. The creature's suit itself isn't great, but they do give the titular monster an ability that is both odd and unique. Sasquatch has a large cast, many of whom are for the most part flatly written with a few notable characteristics. This isn't the most dreadful Bigfoot movie, but there are better ones.

ABOMINABLE
2006
Directed by Ryan Schifrin

A paraplegic man who lost his wife in a tragic accident is brought to his cabin to deal with the trauma he's suffered. There, he notices something in the trees watching the group of young women staying in the house next door. Once he realizes what's out there, he tries to warn the women before it's too late.

Abominable is 1/3 slasher, 1/3 creature feature, and 1/3 poor man's Rear Window. Despite the silly plot, the movie is more watchable than not. The practical effects are good considering the budget was presumably modest at best. There is some mild suspense and the two protagonists give admirable performances.

WILLOW CREEK
2013
Directed by Bobcat Goldthwait

A man and his girlfriend visit Willow Creek, the site where the first footage Bigfoot was supposedly filmed. As they camp out, the couple realizes there is some truth to the myth after all.

Do you know who Bobcat Goldthwait is? Yeah, that guy. Well, he directed and wrote this. He also directed the controversial God Bless America. But Willow Creek is more tame than that. For most of the movie, it's just the couple arguing or being scared. Once the payoff comes, though, you have to decide if it was worth the wait or not. One of the leads, Bryce Johnson, appears in an episode of Bobcat Goldthwait's horror anthology series Misfits & Monsters by the way.

STOMPING GROUND
2014
Directed by Dan Riesser

A man and his girlfriend visit her hometown, where their relationship becomes threatened during a hunt for Bigfoot.

It seems to be customary for Bigfoot movies to show the beast as little as possible. In a way, that is more effective. Especially if the Bigfoot costume looks mediocre. Stomping Ground is mostly a drama until the last act, which is when Bigfoot finally pops up. And the creature suit is rather good, too.

THE LOST COAST TAPES
2012
Directed by Corey Grant

A disgraced reporter tries to prove that a hunter, who claims to have a Bigfoot body in his possession, is lying.

This is one Bigfoot movie that takes a really strange yet intriguing turn near the end. Pay close attention because this is a weird one.

EXISTS
2014
Directed by Eduardo Sánchez

A group of friends traveling to a cabin deep in some Texas woods are stalked by a Bigfoot.

It should be no surprise that the director of The Blair Witch Project made this a found-footage movie. Is it as good as his debut? No, not at all. But it remains to be one of the better Bigfoot horror movies so far. The biggest gripe would be the film showing so much of the cryptid that there is no mystery or suspense left by the end.

BIG BAD
2016
Directed by Opie Cooper

Three students spending the night in an abandoned jail for charity are suddenly left unsupervised. Not to mention vulnerable as there's a dangerous beast lurking about.

If you can make it past the stale opening sequence that goes on for too long, Big Bad is an enjoyable indie adventure comedy. It has mild horror elements to it, but the humor is what makes it such a charming gem.

BIG LEGEND
2018
Directed by Justin Lee

A man whose wife inexplicably disappeared in the Pacific Northwest forests returns there to find answers and closure.

This a grim Bigfoot flick that takes itself too seriously. Especially the ending that seems like they're setting up some kind of Avengers-like sequel.

PRIMAL RAGE
2018
Directed by Patick Magee

A newly reunited couple stumbles upon trouble when driving through the Pacific Northwest.

No, this is not based on the video game of the same name. It is a Bigfoot movie without Bigfoot. Well, the creature in the movie is a creature called Oh-mah (or U'mah/O'mah). There is a famous statue in Willow Creek, California of the creature. The carving was done by Jim McClarin. Oh-mah is from Hupa and Yurok folklore, and it is believed the race of creatures is similar to Bigfoot, but is more dangerous and human-like in behavior. The movie Primal Rage probably chose to use Oh-mah so that they could have the monster perform archery and wear masks when hunting. Yeah. Proceed at your own risk.

ONTD Original: Old Hollywood Love Affairs (Part 1)

$
0
0
Old Hollywood stars seem to have the reputation of being classier and more refined than our current batch of celebrities. I'm here to help remind you that these people were probably even messier and more debauched than modern stars in the '00s paparazzi era and the '10s social media age—they just had film studios covering up their dirty little secrets, time (literally over half a century) for their scandals to blow over, and no social media to spread their exploits at the press of a button. Don't let all those black and white headshots featuring strategic lighting and shadows emphasizing bone structures or sepia images of coiffed hairstyles, trench coats, and pointy bras surrounded by the haze of cigarette smoke fool you.

Disclaimer: While some of these affairs are just messy, others are tragic and appalling. This post may contain details that are triggering for some.

Lupe Vélez & Gary Cooper

• Vélez and Cooper began their tumultuous two-year love affair while filming The Wolf Song (1929)
• At the time, Vélez being typecast as hot-tempered "exotic" temptresses in films and her notorious volatile temper and jealous exploits in her personal life helped cultivate her "Mexican Spitfire" image with the media
• Cooper was a Republican thot with a tragic hairline who aged like most conservative white men from Montana do and who made a habit out of sleeping with his costars; while Vélez's contributions to the film industry are often overlooked, Cooper managed to be known as one of the ~Greats of old Hollywood despite his messy personal life and questionable endeavors
During some of their fights, Vélez would chase Cooper around with a knife and she once slashed him severely enough that he required stitches
• Vélez acquired a pet parrot during their affair who would call her future husband Johnny Weissmuller "Gary"
• Weismuller admitted that there were many times when he had to "persuade" Vélez to return home from Cooper's house
• Vélez would inflict scratches, bruises, and love-bites on Cooper during their fights and "passionate lovemaking"
• During their time together, Cooper also had brief flings with Marlene Dietrich and Carole Lombard while filming Morocco (1930) and I Take This Woman (1931) respectively
• Cooper was bisexual and lived on and off with homosexual actor Anderson Lawler; Vélez told gossip columnist Hedda Hopper that during their affair, whenever Cooper would come home after seeing Lawler, she would pull down his pants and sniff for Lawler's cologne
By the time the affair ended in mid-1931, Cooper had lost 45 pounds and was suffering from nervous exhaustion so the studio ordered him to take a vacation; a devastated and angry Vélez showed up at the train station and shot a pistol at him

• This couple is literally the reason why I decided to make this ~series so they deserve the first spot even if this post isn't in any particular order

• After their split, Cooper spent a year abroad where he had an affair with the married Countess Dorothy di Frasso at her Villa in Rome

• Vélez claimed Cooper "has the biggest organ in Hollywood but not the ass to push it in well", however, despite being mediocre in bed, Cooper had affairs with most of his female costars, including: Marlene Dietrich, Carole Lombard, Ingrid Bergman, Patricia Neal, and Grace Kelly

Ingrid Bergman & Roberto Rossellini

• A great admirer of Rossellini's work, Bergman wrote to the Italian director to suggest working on a film together
Despite both being married, Bergman and Rossellini began an affair during the filming of Stromboli (1950), which led to Bergman becoming pregnant with Rossellini's child
After the news broke of their affair, Bergman was denounced by the Roman Catholic Church and the US Senate, and she left her husband and daughter to return to Italy
• Gossip columnist Hedda Hopper, upset that her rival, Louella Parsons, got the scoop first, launched a smear campaign against Bergman for carrying a married man's child despite also having her own family
• Due to the negative publicity surrounding their affair, Bergman was forced to work in Europe for years, and although she did have a successful comeback working for a Hollywood studio with Anastasia (1956), a role which garnered her a second Academy Award, she did not film in Hollywood again until 1969
A week after she gave birth to the their son, Roberto Ingmar, Bergman divorced her husband and married Rossellini in Mexico
• While living in Europe, Rossellini and Bergman had twin daughters in June 1952 named Isotta Ingrid and Isabella
• The couple's marriage ended after Rossellini had an affair with Sonali Das Gupta (who was also married) in 1957 while filming in India; Jawaharlal Nehru, the Indian Prime Minister at the time who had invited Rossellini to the country asked him to leave following the scandal

• Rossellini married Sonali Das Gupta in 1957 (he was 51, she was 27) after he and Bergman divorced, and they remained married until his death in 1977, though they did separate in 1973 when Rossellini left Das Gupta for a younger woman

• Five years after Bergman's death, Gregory Peck admitted that they had had an affair during the making of Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound (1945)

Vivien Leigh & Laurence Olivier

While both were still married, Leigh and Olivier began an affair during the filming of Fire Over England (1937)
• Because their respective spouses refused to grant them divorces, Leigh and Olivier tried to keep their relationship from public view, though they began living together
• In 1940, Olivier's wife Jill Esmond agreed to divorce Olivier, and she was granted custody of their son; Leigh Holman, Leigh's husband, also agreed to a divorce, and he was granted custody of their daughter
• Leigh and Olivier married on August 31, 1940 in a Californian ceremony attended by their hosts, Ronald and Benita Colman, and witnesses, Katharine Hepburn and Garson Kanin
Leigh suffered from bipolar disorder (then known as "manic depression") and Olivier recalled that sometime after the end of World War II, Leigh calmly told him she was no longer in love with him, though she loved him like a brother; Olivier didn't know it at the time but Leigh's abrupt declaration was a signal of her bipolar disorder, and the two began having affairs until the end of their marriage in 1960

• Olivier later recalled, "I couldn't help myself with Vivien. No man could. I hated myself for cheating on Jill, but then I had cheated before, but this was something different. This wasn't just out of lust. This was love that I really didn't ask for but was drawn into"

• In his autobiography, Marlon Brando stated that while he was attracted to Leigh during the filming of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), he didn't seduce her out of respect for her husband Olivier because Brando found him to be such a "nice guy"

Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton

• Probably the most well-known affair on this list involves the queen of diamonds Elizabeth Taylor and king of foot-in-mouth syndrome Richard Burton
Taylor and Burton began their affair while filming Cleopatra (1963) while they were both still married
• According to Taylor, her first impression of Burton was that he was "rather full of himself"
• Biographer Hollis Alpert notes that when the two first met while taking publicity photos, Burton said, "Has anyone ever told you that you're a very pretty girl?" with Taylor later recalling, "I said to myself, Oy gevalt, here's the great lover, the great wit, the great intellectual of Wales, and he comes out with a line like that"
• Melvyn Bragg, another biographer, claims Burton didn't like Taylor at first because he saw her as another celebrity with no acting talent and nicknamed her "Miss Tits", though Burton later changed his mind after Taylor soothed him after he forgot his lines during their first scene together
• The Vatican condemned the couple for "erotic vagrancy" after the two were spotted together on a yacht by paparazzi, confirming their extramarital affair
Eleven days after her husband Eddie Fisher granted her a divorce, Taylor and Burton married in Montreal, with Taylor saying, "I'm so happy you can't believe it. This marriage will last forever"
Taylor and Burton divorced in 1974 but married for the second time sixteen months after their divorce; they permanently separated and divorced in 1976

• Taylor was married to Eddie Fisher at the time of her affair with Burton; Fisher was a friend of her previous husband, Mark Todd, and the husband of her then-best friend Debbie Reynolds, and Taylor and Fisher married not long after Todd died in a plane crash

• Fisher allegedly found out about his wife's affair after Burton answered her phone; Fisher demanded to know what Burton was doing at her home and Burton eloquently replied, "What do you think I'm doing?" and "I'm fucking your wife"

• Burton, articulate and sensitive as ever, was quoted as saying: "At thirty-four [Taylor] is an extremely beautiful woman, lavishly endowed by nature with a few flaws in the masterpiece: She has an insipid double chin, her legs are too short and she has a slight potbelly. She has a wonderful bosom, though"

Beverly Aadland & Errol Flynn

• Although Flynn and his third wife, Patrice Wymore, separated due to his alcohol and drug addictions, they remained married until his death
• Flynn was over thirty years older than Aadland when they began their affair in 1957; at the time, Flynn was way past his prime and was facing financial difficulties, and he was also ugly and bloated
• In her memoir, The Big Love (1961), Aadland's mother claims she arranged for her daughter to work for Flynn and eventually become his lover, and that Aadland and Flynn's sexual relationship began when she was 15 and he was 48
• Flynn was 50 when he died in 1959 and Aadland was only 17
According to Aadland, Flynn raped her but she forgave him and, after falling in love with him, they began dating for two years before his death in 1959
• Aadland went public in 1996 and said that prior to Flynn's death, there had been plans to marry (their engagement was announced at her 17th birthday party) and have children (he reversed his vasectomy)
Aadland referred to her relationship with Flynn as a "game"; Flynn arranged to have her arrested on bogus charges in France, and he would pretend to beat Aadland in public and she would put ketchup on herself to simulate blood so they could enjoy the hysterical reaction of the people around them
• Flynn literally said, "I like my whiskey old and my women young"

• The phrase "In Like Flynn" stems from his acquittal of his 1942 trial for the statutory rape of two underage girls

• Flynn met his second wife, who was working at a snack counter in a courthouse, at one of his rape trials

• At one point Flynn had six separate STDs

Clara Bow & Bela Lugosi

• Bow and Lugosi began their turbulent love affair in the late 1920s
• Bow met Lugosi, who didn't speak any English, backstage in Los Angeles after his performance in the stage production of Dracula
In 1929, Lugosi married Beatrice Weeks, a wealthy widow, who filed for divorce four months after their wedding, citing Bow as the "other woman", which became a huge scandal in Hollywood
• At the time, Bow was disliked by many in the film and media industries for not conforming to traditional stereotypes and not being "ladylike"; Bow was notoriously open about her poor upbringing, troubled childhood with her mentally ill mother, and "engagements" (her euphemism for sexual encounters) with leading men and directors
• Lugosi is said to have shown off some scratches on his body in which he bragged were inflicted by Bow during their "engagements" together
After their affair ended, Lugosi commissioned a friend and artist to paint a nude portrait of Bow in 1929 as a memento of their short time together; the painting was displayed in each of his homes until his death, and his next two wives had the privilege of living with the infamous painting for the duration of their marriages
• The painting, which maybe looked like Bow if you squinted hard enough, sold for $30,000 at an auction in 2013

• Bow allegedly interrupted her own pool party to take her friends to see Lugosi in Dracula and was so excited to see the play and meet him that she just put a mink coat over her swimsuit

Katharine Hepburn & Spencer Tracy

Although Tracy remained married to his wife, Louise Treadwill, until his death in 1967, the couple actually became estranged in the 1930s
• During their marriage, Tracy had affairs with Loretta Young in 1933 to 1934, Joan Crawford in 1937, Ingrid Bergman in 1941, and allegedly with Judy Garland in 1936 when she was just 14
Tracy and Hepburn began their lifelong relationship in 1941 while making Woman of the Year, and they remained together until his death twenty-six years later
• Although it was an open secret in Hollywood, MGM helped hide their relationship from the public to avoid a scandal (and because Tracy wanted to keep the secret from his wife)
• The couple were careful not to be seen together in public and maintained separate residencies until shortly before Tracy died
Tracy told Joan Fontaine, "I can get a divorce whenever I want to, but my wife and Kate like things just as they are", while Treadwill said, "I will be Mrs. Spencer Tracy until the day I die"; Hepburn did not interfere and did not fight for marriage
• Hepburn took care of Tracy, who was an alcoholic and suffered from depression; several people described how Hepburn mothered and obeyed him, and Tracy was wholly dependent on her
• Hepburn did not attend Tracy's funeral out of respect for his family, and she only began discussing their relationship after his wife's death in 1983

• Tracy allegedly had an affair with Gene Tierney in 1952 while with Hepburn

• Hepburn never watched Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) because it was Tracy's last film

• Hepburn and Tracy made nine films together, and together they were an extremely popular and profitable pair in film

Dorothy Dandridge & Otto Preminger

• Dandridge and Preminger began their four-year affair during the production of Carmen Jones (1954)
During their time together, Preminger began advising Dandridge on her career and demanded she only accept starring roles; Dandridge later admitted she regretted following Preminger's advice because she stopped receiving offers for parts after she kept declining them due to Preminger's influence
• Dandridge was pursued for the role of Tuptim in The King and I (1956) but Preminger advised her to reject the offer since she wouldn't be the star and, allegedly, because the character was a slave
Dandridge became pregnant with Preminger's child but was forced to have an abortion by the studio
• After realizing Preminger would not leave his wife to marry her, Dandridge ended their affair

• After successfully landing the title role in Carmen Jones, Dandridge became anxious about her ability to do the role of Carmen justice and when Preminger was told by her agent that Dandridge was backing out of the project, Preminger drove to her apartment to reassure her and assuage her fears; the two began their affair shortly after

Ava Gardner & Frank Sinatra

Despite having many affairs during his marriage with his first wife, Nancy Barbato, Sinatra's affair with Gardner was the one that finally led to their divorce
Gossip columnists Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons each wrote scathing pieces about Sinatra, and he was blasted by the Hollywood establishment, the Roman Catholic Church, and his fans for leaving his wife for Gardner, a noted "femme fatale"
• When the couple first got together, Sinatra's career was at its lowest point and Gardner often had to lend him money to buy presents for his children; after Sinatra went broke in 1951, Gardner paid for his plane tickets so he could accompany her to Africa while she filmed Mogambo (1953)
• Gardner used her influence to get Sinatra cast in From Here to Eternity (1953), which helped revitalize his acting and singing careers, and earned him an Academy Award
• Gardner and Sinatra were married in 1951 but their marriage was turbulent with many well-publicized altercations; the couple separated in 1953 and Gardner filed for divorce the following year but the divorce was not settled until 1957
• During their marriage, Gardner became pregnant twice but was forced by the studio to abort both pregnancies because, according to her autobiography, "MGM had all sorts of penalty causes about their stars having babies"
• After their divorce, Sinatra and Gardner remained good friends and, in her autobiography, Gardner named Sinatra as the love of her life

• During their courtship, Sinatra bought Gardner a Corgi puppy for her birthday; for the rest of her life, Gardner always had a Corgi with her

• Sinatra allegedly kept a picture of Gardner on his mirror long after their relationship ended

Joan Bennett & Jennings Lang

Bennett's film producer husband, Walter Wanger, suspected his wife and her agent of twelve years, Jennings Lang, were having an affair so he hired a detective who shadowed Bennett for months and confirmed his suspicions
On December 13, 1951, Wanger followed and waited for his wife while she had a meeting with Lang and when Lang walked Bennett to her convertible and chatted with her, Wanger went up to them and shot Lang twice and wounded him; one bullet hit Lang's right thigh, near the hip, and the other penetrated his groin
• This all conveniently took place right across of a police station so when they heard the shots, the police took Wanger into custody, where he was booked, fingerprinted, and thoroughly questioned
• Bennett denied the affair and blamed the stress of Wanger's financial setbacks involving film productions as the reason why her husband shot Lang
• After briefly going with a "temporary insanity" defense, Wanger was later sentenced to four months in prison by a jury
• Although Wanger was typically able to bounce back and produce more successful films, Bennett's acting career suffered greatly due to the scandal; Bennett once said, "I might as well have pulled the trigger myself"
• Bennett and Wanger remained married until 1965

• The Wangers and Langs often went on double-dates and were close friends

• During this time, Wanger's career was declining and he was still recovering, financially and reputation-wise, from producing Joan of Arc (1948), which starred Ingrid Bergman; the news of Bergman's extramarital affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini offended the definitely not hypocritical American audience, who boycotted the film, and Joan of Arc was a blow to Wanger

• In his biography, David Niven claims Wanger stalked Errol Flynn and threatened to kill him because he believed Flynn was also having an affair with Bennett

I Am Not a Serial Killer© 2016 IFC Midnight

"Everybody’s gone / And I’ve been here for too long / To face this on my own / Well, I guess this is growing up."
- "Dammit" by Blink 182

The term "adulting" is a blemish on modern vernacular, but the idea behind it is understandable at the very least. For everyone who complains about being an adult, they surely may have forgotten what adolescence is like. The sudden growth spurts, the acne, the search for friendships, first loves, the fights with parents, and homework. Is that really something adults want to go back to?

On the other hand, think about what teenage characters endure in horror movies: demonic possession, lycanthropy, homicidal maniacs wearing masks, psychotic fantasies that seep into reality. Yeah, it might be easier to accept your mundane maturation toward adulthood after all.

Because puberty was a pain, here are ten horror movies about characters coming of age.

GINGER SNAPS

The 2000 low-budget Canadian werewolf movie named after the sugary confection should be watched by anyone who ever felt left out in high school. Why? For starters, the Fitzgerald sisters in Ginger Snaps are late bloomers. Physically and socially. They spend all their time together, filming macabre home movies that seem more like a cry for help than entertainment. Their mother is a suburban stereotype who seems overly invested in her daughters' lives, but neither Ginger or Brigitte seem to care. Their father has no discernible presence and could have been excluded from the story altogether.

At school, the sisters try their hardest to avoid their peers. This doesn't always work as evident in gym class when the youngest Fitzgerald, Brigitte, is picked on by a popular classmate. To which older sister Ginger has to then defend her. Yet as Brigitte struggles, Ginger begins to change after the pair's chance encounter with the mysterious beast that has been picking off local pets. Not only is Ginger transforming physically - as all the boys in the class notice - her personality has been overhauled. Ginger, once stricken with a case of self-induced seclusion, soon finds herself smoking pot, dressing more provocatively, and experimenting sexually. So what's gotten into Ginger? Has puberty finally taken its toll? Or is lycanthrophy to blame?

Ginger Snaps is a movie that resonates with many serious horror fans, who probably have at some point felt like a bit of an outsider. No matter how popular horror movies are, it's still not regarded by the general public as something not "okay" to openly enjoy. Using Ginger's new werewolf state as a metaphor for puberty is brilliant. It coincides with the idea that at that point in our lives, we really have no control over our bodies. Hair grows in places we never had hair before, mood swings develop, and hormones influence us to make the worst decisions. Unfortunately for the Fitzgerald sisters, Ginger's lycanthropic malady is not all perks. Growing up can be such a beast.

IT

Stephen King has the ability to capture the pangs of youth creepily well in his works, which includes Stand by Me, The Long Walk, and Silver Bullet. And last year, one of his most popular works, It, was adapted for the big screen. The young protagonists, dubbed "The Loser Club," find themselves being preyed upon by a local evil being known as Pennywise. Together, this group of unlikely heroes battle the creature while avenging one of their own's fallen sibling.

The antics and tribulations of the kids in It have understandably reverberated with adult viewers. Andy Muschietti's rendition is yet another serving of 1980s mimicry that inundates current pop culture, but he doesn't focus on only nostalgia. He uses it as a backdrop to King's story of puberty, loss, and coming to terms with the end of childhood.

THE NEW DAUGHTER

Some parents will say that dealing with teenagers is far more terrifying than anything one will see in a horror movie. But what if your teenager was suddenly under a supernatural influence during that rough period of adolescence? That's what happens to Kevin Costner's character in this creature feature. After divorcing his cheating wife, an author moves his teen daughter and young son to rural South Carolina. While walking in the woods nearby, the daughter stumbles upon a large mound. As it turns out, this is a burial mound. What's buried inside, though?

The remainder of the movie has the daughter acting out after coming in contact with the mysterious mound. Her clothes are more daring, she's aggressive with classmates, and her general indignance has been amplified. How did anyone know something unnatural was causing her unruly behavior? Anyway, Costner's character spends the movie fretting over his daughter's overnight changes, which speaks of his discomfort with his child's budding young adulthood. His quest to remedy the problem ties in to fathers' obsessions with their daughters' "loss of innocence."

Diablo Cody's Jennifer's Body had a similar theme of a young woman being possessed by otherworldly forces. However, in that movie, the friend was trying to save the titular character out of good intentions. In The New Daughter, the father seems to be as afraid of the supernatural hold on his child as he is with the overwhelming idea that she's growing up and there's nothing he can do about it.

MEMENTO MORI

Everyone remembers their first kiss. Their first love. Their first heartbreak. Unfortunately for many, those memories are painful. Beyond the spectrum of what's considered a normal amount of emotional pain at that youthful age. In this standalone sequel to the South Korean horror movie Whispering Corridors, two students -- Shi-eun and Hyo-shin -- at an all-girls school fall in love, and they become marginalized by their peers. Their classmate, Mina, later finds their shared diary, which sparks a wave of supernatural events at the school.

Memento Mori is a pensive, psychosexual entry in South Korean horror. Anyone familiar with the industry and society in the country would understand why a film of this nature would be deemed controversial. Back then in 1999, it was difficult to see this movie as a wide release was intentionally made unavailable for some time. The subject matter would still be controversial today. So the film is a milestone in Korean homosexual media. Unfortunately, it is often overlooked by Asian horror enthusiasts. For those with the patience for a slow burn, Memento Mori is a rewarding hidden gem.

I AM NOT A SERIAL KILLER

Trying to find somewhere to belong to during adolescence can be tough. Even more so if you're diagnosed with psychopathy. This is the case for John, a teen growing in a small Midwestern town. He suffers homicidal impulses, which he fights regularly. John's mother sees to it that her son never caves to his desires by having him regularly attend therapy. Not to mention have John help out at his family's funeral home so she and his aunt can watch over him.

But those urges aren't easy to push down. Especially when there's a serial killer lurking about in town. Although John figures out who the culprit is, he is unable to divulge the truth to anyone as no one would likely believe him. And for good reason.

The movie is a strained examination of one teenager's mental well-being set to the backdrop of a cat-and-mouse game. This is no normal film about puberty. But when has puberty ever been normal?

TRANSFIGURATION

The desire to be something you're not isn't exclusive to teenagers. Everyone puts on airs or pretends. Some more than others. For instance, young Milo is obsessed with vampires. Not like a Twilight fan is. He watches Nosferatu and other classic vampire movies. Oh, and he also murders people and drinks their blood. But he's not a vampire. Not yet at least.

Milo takes a fantasy and makes it a dark, disturbing reality. He truly thinks he is going to become a creature of the night. He is involved in multiple murders, but those crimes don't faze him at all. When he's not vamping it up, he is being bullied by his peers. How he gets back at them is devious.

Black characters are statistically less likely to be made the protagonist in films, but it seems to be even less so with horror. Milo, in spite of his homicidal tendencies and delusion, is a dynamic, remarkably written character whose foil turns out to be his affection for his neighbor Sophie. Their relationship is inspiring as it shows that everyone is capable of making a human connection, even those who deem themselves to not be entirely human.

JUG FACE

You can't choose your family, they say. And that statement rings unfortunately too true for Jug Face's Ada, a teenager living in a backwoods community that wholly worships a creature living in a pit. This indie drama has elements of horror, but it is not a monster flick by any means either.

Jug Face is a southern gothic drama that touches upon subjects such as fringe religion, misogyny, the patriarchy, and incest. Ada wants something better for herself, and she knows the only way she can do that is to leave her home. But the toxicity of that life not only binds her, it stops her from growing and moving on.

This movie isn't for everyone as it's more suggestive than overt. The horror comes more from a place of oppression than the creature that supposedly lives in the pit. But if a viewer feels like dissecting a thinking-type horror movie that echoes cinema of the past, then Jug Face is a perfect viewing choice.

EXCISION
The adage of "follow your dreams" is a good one to believe in. Unless those dreams involve you killing a bunch of people. Then maybe it's time to wake up.

Pauline, the main character of Excision, is a social outcast at school because she is undoubtedly weird by most social contexts. She dreams of becoming a surgeon, and she wants to please her mother no matter what. Her sister Grace has cystic fibrosis, which immediately sets up a parallel between life and death in regards to the daughters. Pauline, however, isn't as emotionally well-balanced as Grace. She loses herself in surreal fantasies of murder, which influence her state of mind as the movie progresses.

Excision is a darkly comedic film carried by excellent performances from the lead, AnnaLynne McCord, and her mother, played by the undervalued Traci Lords. Adolescence has never been this brutal.

RAW

Being gifted at something should make one feel special, but at a young age, it can be a curse. Especially for Justine in Raw (oiginal title: Grave), the heralded feature-length debut from director Julia Ducournau. A lot of pressure is already on Justine's shoulders: she's attending the same veterinary school her parents met at. Her older sister Alexia is also a current student. So her future has already been decided for her in a way. Justine isn't your average teenager. Aside from her exceptional intelligence, she is especially mature for someone her age. Of course there are downsides to those traits: she's socially awkward and she lacks the confidence her sister has.

During a hazing ritual, vegetarian Justine is pressured to consume rabbit kidneys. This act not only triggers her insatiable taste for flesh but it also awakens carnal desires. Giving in to a carnivorous rite of social acceptance is a heavy-handed metaphor for growing up, and the subject of sexuality here is handled clumsily. Yet still, Raw has enough to satiate anyone's appetite for a very different kind of teen horror movie.

A TALE OF TWO SISTERS

People can be terrible. This is not a new concept. The selfish, cruel actions of one can change everything. This is true for sisters Su-mi and Su-yeon. Their lives have radically changed since the death of their terminally ill mother. Their father marrying her nurse, Eun-joo, didn't help matters either. Now, though, something sinister is happening in their house. But is it of human nature or supernatural?

The 2003 sleeper horror drama A Tale of Two Sisters is one of those films that is as convoluted as it is thought provoking. It begs viewers to pay close attention so they can better understand the trauama and emotional turmoil Su-mi and Su-yeon endure. That being said, the less said about the story, the better it is for new viewers.

ONTD Original: Hailey Baldwin's Years Long Obsession with Justin Bieber

Despite reports that Hailey and Justin were friends from an early age who met because of her dad and then stayed in contact because of their "church", it seems to be that after briefly meeting backstage on the Today show, Hailey Baldwin is a former Belieber stalker who's only recently gotten closer to him.

The above video is from former Bieber fan, Dana Rose. She met Hailey Baldwin via twitter and the two became friends. Here's Dana, Hailey, and other girls attempting to recreate Justin, Selena, and company's "Call Me Maybe" video

Dana was one of those fans who would stalk Justin Bieber and has "met" him multiple times. A few of those times, she was accompanied by Hailey Baldwin, who used to DM Dana to ask for Bieber's location.

And it worked on occasion. Note that this is a fan pic rather than some throwback to their shared youth

Another instance of waiting for him outside of hotels in 2012 despite her claims otherwise.

Hailey made another friend this evening with Selena Gomez stan/stalker Ronnie, who claims that she would DM all the time for Bieber's location

And another anonymous talked to PageSix about how she never stopped wanting to hook up with him during his days of dating Selena.

“She was super obsessed with him. Justin was trying to get back with Selena and [Baldwin] couldn’t get over that. She wouldn’t talk to other guys, wouldn’t date other guys Wouldn’t give other guys the time of day,” he said. “She wanted to [put] it super out there how religious she was, I think, just so it would hook [Bieber].”

Now in her youth Hailey used to be both a Selena and a Jelena fan

But then there's also been some weird passive aggressive back and forth on such opinions as she got closer in his orbit as well as an escalation to just pure disdain as she found herself being dumped for Selena

When Justin and Selena broke up earlier this year, she was quite pleased.

In 2014, Justin invited an old fling, Yovanna, to his birthday party. Hailey was not happy about this.

In 2015, Justin flounced and ignored her. As a result, Hailey left his AMA afterparty upset and then got some cupcakes from Kendall to cheer her up

Before being spotted with Justin more frequently, she left this comment on Scooter's IG

In 2016, a twitter stan hacked Hailey's account but when she was found out and subsequently blocked, lost her shit and leaked things in retaliation.

These are her interactions with John, Justin's friend and social media account manager. This particular exchange is about when Justin posted a throwback picture of him and Selena, and then Selena attended his concert.

ONTD Halloween Original™: 13 Movies & TV Episodes Inspired by The Monkey's Paw

Wish Upon© 2017 Broad Green Pictures & Orion Pictures

"We often confuse what we wish for with what is."
- Neil Gaiman, MirrorMask

We have all heard the phrase "Be careful what you wish for." The adage's origin isn't exactly known, but everyone understands its meaning. Our desire for gaining something without earning it clouds our judgment. There are consequences to everything in life so wishes can be a double edged sword. This idea is perfectly illustrated in W.W. Jacobs' classic tale "The Monkey's Paw." In the story, a person using a monkey's paw talisman is granted three wishes. Those wishes come true, but at a cost. For example: wishing for money causes someone else to die, thus supplying the source of money wished for.

Takes on this story have appeared in countless movies and television shows. Any true fans of classic Simpsons knows it. So what other movies and shows have been inspired by "The Monkey's Paw"? There really are too many to list completely, but these thirteen titles should tide you over. Maybe even teach you how to phrase a perfect wish.

WISHMASTER
1997
Directed by Robert Kurtzman

When an evil jinn is freed in the modern world, he must have his master make three wishes so that he can unleash his brethren.

A jinn or djinn is a supernatural creature originally from Arabian mythology. They can be good, bad, or neutral in nature. The lore was twisted into that of the common genie: a benevolent or mischevous yet ultimately harmless being that grants his or her owner three wishes. Well, that's not what a jinn is at all. In this late '90s creature feature, both mythologies are combined for the sake of a story. Wishmaster doesn't have any blue guys singing or being stuffed inside a lamp (here it's a gem). It has a demonic-looking entity that relishes in destroying people through the power of wish. The movie is considerably cheesy by today's standards, but if you want some gory mayhem, the first Wishmaster is worth seeking out. There are three sequels. Should you watch them? Maybe the first one. The other two are another level of mediocrity that's hard to describe.

WISHCRAFT
2002
Directed by Larry Katz

A high school student receives a talisman that grants him three wishes.

Scream revived the interest in teen horror and slashers. Many of the movies were fairly generic and forgettable. Wishcraft didn't receive a wide theatrical release so it's safe to assume most people have never heard of it. The main story involves a "Monkey's Paw" type situation, but the wishes indirectly causes a cloaked killer to appear. So that's why this one is classified as a slasher. Audiences wanting something that doesn't veer too far from the unfamiliar yet somehow crave a touch of creativity should seek Wishcraft out.

DEATHDREAM / DEAD OF NIGHT
1974
Directed by Bob Clark

After their son died overseas in the Vietnam War, a family is surprised when he returns home unscathed. Or so they think.

The late Bob Clark is best known for A Christmas Story and the proto-slasher Black Christmas, but his other 1974 horror movie Deathdream often gets overlooked. Comparing it to Black Christmas, the two movies share a very similar visual style. From the snippets of heavy, unnerving breathing to the general atmosphere of some scenes. Deathdream adapts the "Monkey's Paw" story sparingly and without much surprise, but it's still a vintage treat.

MIRROR MIRROR
1990
Directed by Marina Sargenti

A teenager finds a strange antique mirror in her new house that grants wishes, but only with deadly consequences.

A Beetlejuice era Winona Ryder lookalike by the name of Rainbow Harvest (no, really) plays the main character in this obcure early '90s movie. Along with horror veteran Karen Black, the two gave commendable performances. This gothic teen horror flick has a sinister twist at the end that will delight some.

LEPRECHAUN 2 & 3
1994 / 1995
Directed by Rodman Flender (Leprechaun 2)
Directed by Brian Trenchard-Smith (Leprechaun 3)

A young man must save his girlfriend, who has been selected by the notoriously evil Leprechaun to be his wife. And later, the Leprechaun wreaks havoc in Las Vegas.

In the first two sequels to the original Leprechaun, starring Warwick Davis as the titular villain, the subplot of "wish-granting gone awry" was added. So these silly movies may have just very well inspired the Wishmaster series.

THE GATE II: TRESPASSERS
1990
Directed by Tibor Takács

Terry's mother just passed away and his father is a jobless alcoholic. The teenager hopes to reopen the Gate so he can harness its power to fix his life.

Many people will write this sequel to the cult hit The Gate off as mediocre, but that's a harsh critque. No, it doesn't have the same magic as the first movie. What it does have is heart surprisingly enough. While the character of Terry doesn't seem like the best choice for making a movie about, it somehow works. He is a sympathetic protagonist who is so desperate to change the course of his home life that he'll summon otherworldly demons. The Gate II can stand on its own, but for different reasons.

THE MONKEY'S PAW
2013
Directed by Brett Simmons

A man makes wishes with a Monkey's Paw talisman. In doing so, he revives a dead co-worker. He soon regrets that decision.

Audiences would think they know exactly how this one will play out, but this solid take on the story goes in a whole other direction that is much appreciated.

WISHING STAIRS
2003
Directed by Jae-yeon Yun

A stairwell in a boarding school dorm normally has twenty-eight steps. Sometimes a twenty-ninth step inexplicably appears, and whatever wish you make will be granted. Unfortunately for a ballet dancer and her classmates, a malicious spirit

The third movie in the Whispering Corridors franchise is self-contained much like the other sequels. And also like the other entries, it's laced with homosexual innuendo. The many sub-plots here bog down what is an otherwise eerie, gothic tale full of mystery, psychosexuality, and tension.

WISH UPON
2017
Directed by John R. Leonetti

A teenager finds a Chinese music box that grants wishes at a deadly price.

Wish Upon is Final Destination for a younger demo. As unremarkable as it is, the movie has a memorable if not mean-spirited ending.

TALES FROM THE CRYPT:
7.02 "LAST RESPECTS"

1996
Directed by Freddie Francis

When three sisters discover a Monkey's Paw in their late father's shop, they use it for personal gain.

By the last season of this generally outstanding horror anthology, there were some duds that almost marr Tales from the Crypt's reputation. "Last Respects" has nothing on the "Wish You Were Here" segment from the '72 Crypt movie, which was also directed by Freddie Francis. In fact, the episode is low brow even for this series, and there really is no gain from watching something so subpar.

ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK?:
1.04 "THE TALE OF THE TWISTED CLAW"
1992
Directed by D.J. MacHale

Two boys are gifted a twisted vulture's foot that not only grants wishes but also curses the users.

In one of the more indelible episodes of the classic Nickelodeon show, two boys experience the consequences of their wishes made upon a vulture's foot. Not sure why they changed that part, but it doesn't really matter either. Seeing as this is ultimately a show aimed at kids, things never enter darker territories like in other adaptations. That doesn't make "The Tale of the Twisted Claw" bad or inferior, though. It's just a context people should remember so they can enjoy the episode for what it is rather than what it isn't.

INSIDE NO. 9:
4.06 "TEMPTING FATE"

2018
Directed by Jim O'Hanlon

Three council contractors assigned to clear out a dead man's flat uncover a rabbit figurine that grants wishes.

This heralded BBC anthology is a breath of fresh air for lovers of stories. Ones that stick with you because they typically boast a punchline or twist. The season four finale, "Tempting Fate," is well aware of its inspiration from "The Monkey's Paw." It even references the story and the rules. Does that help the characters? Not really. They still make the same mistakes. The episode, however, does have a twist as well as a largely grim conclusion.

ONTD Original: Today is Oct 14. In Memoriam of 2% of the population that vanished and 'The Leftovers

$

In case you forgot, Oct. 14 marks the date we remember when 2% of the population mysteriously vanished from the world in 'The Leftovers', the most criminally underated show of the last few years.

Let's take a look at the 5 best moments of 'The Leftovers'that i could find in youtube.

5. The Most Powerful Man in the World (and His Identical Twin Brother)
Kevin destroyed the International Assassin universe. From him becoming president, having a twin, using his penis to enter the military base, killing his twin, Patty as his companion and destroying the worlds. It's one entire mindfuck of an hour.

4. Kevin Comes Home.
At the end of season 2, Kevin comes back to life and Miracle is raided but the crazy fans. In the end, Kevin returns to his home to find his entire family. It's such a powerful scene, since everyone had their own story and even hated each other, but got together in the end.

3. International Assasin.
Everytime Kevin died and woke up in the International Assasin universe, it was when the show was at it's best. Particulary when Kevin had to kill Patty as a kid.

2. What really happened.
From the beginning the show said that we'd never find out what happened to the people that vanished. Yet they revealed it at the very end during Kevin and Nora's final conversation. She went to a parallel earth where the vanished people lived and she found her kids.

1. JILL!!!!!!
The guilty remnant's house was burning down and Laurie breaks her non-speaking commitment to tell Kevin that their daughter is in the fire.

ONTD Halloween Original™: 10 Songs From Horror Movie Soundtracks

$
0
0

"Without music, life would be a mistake."
- Friedrich Nietzsche, Twilight of the Idols

Music is an outlet for those who make it and those who don't. The anxieties we feel can be quelled by that favorite song, or bad memories can be summoned with a track you wish you never had to hear again. Music taps into our psyche more than we know.

In horror movies, sometimes the perfect song can elevate the story or mood. A song may also be a device to better explain what you see (or don't see) on screen.

Here are ten random songs featured in or written specifically for horror movies.

"How Do I Deal"
Jennifer Love Hewitt

from I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

LISTEN

Jennifer Love Hewitt provides the vocals for this original song on the I Still Know What You Did Last Summer soundtrack. "How Do I Deal" is an angsty pop/rock track that reflects the less dour mood of the sequel while still referencing the trauma the protagonist feels after the events of the first movie.

"Prisoner"
Barbra Streisand

from Eyes of Laura Mars

LISTEN

Even if you're not a fan of Streisand, this haunting ballad is enjoyable. Streisand is wild as she cuts the musical theatrics and unleashes her voice.

"Prom Night"
from Prom Night

LISTEN

This slasher couldn't get the rights to actual famous disco tracks so the movie composed its own. It was revealed that the singer of the movie's title song is not a single person but really an amalgam of random backing vocalists. Try not to get this one stuck in your head.

"Cry Little Sister"
Gerard McMann

from The Lost Boys

LISTEN

The Gothic "Cry Little Sister" serves as the main theme for The Lost Boys, a coming-of-age tale involving vampires. It's a dreamy dark wave track that was actually written before Gerard McMann saw any footage from the movie. So it mentions nothing about vampires yet somehow encapsulates the mood of the movie so well.

"Through the Trees"
Low Shoulder

from Jennifer's Body

LISTEN

The fictional Low Shoulder from the cult hit Jennifer's Body is a real-life band (minus Adam Brody) that now goes by Wildling. "Through the Trees" is typical sounding of slower, more mindful 2000s indie pop/rock, but it is a beautiful song with lyrics that well describe the events of the movie.

"Raven"
Do As Infinity

from Uzumaki

LISTEN

Sometimes songs don't really fit the movie they're tied into. That is true for Uzumaki's closing song "Raven," a catchy alt-rock B-side written and performed by the Japanese band Do As Infinity. The English translated lyrics can be read here.

"Bump in the Night"
Steel Breeze

from Witchboard

LISTEN

One of the more underrated supernatural horror movies from the '80s includes this wonderfully ghoulish heavy metal number.

"Got You (Where I Want You)"
The Flys

from Disturbing Behavior

LISTEN

Some say the '90s was the last era for truly good alternatve music on the radio. That may be true, but at least we have the memories of solid one hit wonders like "Got You (Where I Want You)."

"Things That Go Bump in the Night"
allSTARS*

from I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

LISTEN

So the live-action 2002 Scooby-Doo movie isn't exactly a horror movie, but this teenybopper earworm is too irresistible to not include. Everyone should honor the allSTARS*'s short-lived career by adding this track to their Halloween playlists.

"White"
PinkDolls

from White: Melody of the Curse

LISTEN

If you like modern K-pop, you should know what to expect from this fictional horror pop group's cursed song. Be sure to read a translation of the track's creepy lyrics.

Did Lady Gaga EVER Get A Nose Job? ONTD Investigates 👃🔎

$
0
0

Why are we talking about acclaimed and successful newly-debuted actress Lady Gaga's nose on this fine day when we have more important things to talk about since we LIVE in a SOCIETY? Well, Gaga's film A Star Is Born makes many nods throughout the film regarding Ally's (played by Stefani Germanotta) nose for being too big, and it being a deal breaker for her not succeeding in the music industry.
👃
This story reflects the reality of the actress who has been self conscious about her large nose since her early days, where execs (like in the movie) told her the size of her nose is holding her back. Since some of you did already, what we are not gonna do is address any other things Gaga might've done to her face.
👃
What's so important about this New York Italian Girl's nose? Because people claim it's been hypocritical in how much pride she talked about her nose during this movie campaign after surgery, but the truth is it has not changed at all. Some photos show trickery, #perfectillusions, and mind games, but this is for exposing the real truth and debunking #alternativefacts.

Before vs. "After"

Lady Gaga in 2008 (both photos)

- The ICONIC photoshoot on the right is by photographer Mick Rock, and the side by side comparison has been commonly used to show how different Lady Gaga transformed once her first album was released. Who knows which fanbase got a hold on these photos, but a retouched version of it has been circling around. Anyone with eyes can see the blurry edit on it, while the real photo is below:

Fake clickbait photo on the left.

Real photo.Smudge/liquify tool debunkedt ✅

Now the thing with future EGOT winner Gaga's enigmatic and elusive nose is that it takes many shapes and forms depending on the lighting and angle - it's not just one icon, it's every icon. There are example of old AND newer images showing her nose being more prominent in size than in others:

Images from the previous decade vs. this decade showing less prominent in size

Here are selfies circa 2012 and 2017 where PortrudingNosega JUMPED out. By then she would have had countless nose surgery rumors inbetween.

Nose height and width stayed consistent, confirmedT. ✅

The next thing people point out is ha classiq BUMP on her ridge. Some websites were lazy to fact check before and after pictures, like the one above, even showing candids in incorrect 'before and after' sequence. However, the bump remained quiet and minded its own business:

Nose bump remained in 2011, 2017, and 2018 - consistent, confirmedT. ✅

So what is the truth?

Gaga on Snapchat last year.

- The ALLEGED nose jobs reported have been inconsistent FROM gossip bloggers and websites.
- Some rumors date back form pre-fame, during fame, or even more recently.
- WITH photo proof and examination throughout the years, the similarities remained, and her schnoz will always be remembered this way.
- Some hater flops will continue to believe Gaga touched up on her nose surgically therefore losing integrity, but for us #truthseekers, we don't wanna hear another lie, don't wanna start another rumor, don't wanna know another fib, baby facts will just stay on your lips.

ONTD Halloween Original™: 10 Movies Inspired by Agatha Christie's 'And Then There Were None'

$
0
0

Mindhunters© 2004 Miraxmax Films

"One of us in this very room is in fact the murderer."
- Agatha Christie, And Then There Were None

Without Agatha Christie, the world may not have one of the most popular niches of horror today: slashers. She refined everything that eventually evolved into slasher tropes. These same devices would be used in giallo and other mysteries.

In Christie's most popular work, And Then There Were None, a group of people are brought together for a reason unbeknownst to them at first. As the story continues, people start to die. And the killer's identity and motive are both revealed by the end.

This simple formula gave way to and shaped many horror movies people love today. While not every one of the entries on this list faithfully adhere to the blueprint, the inspiration from And Then There Were None is undeniable.

DEVIL
2010
Directed by John Erick Dowdle

A group of people trapped together inside an elevator believes something evil is among them.

This movie differentiates itself from the basic formula by 1) confining most of the movie's main story to one "bottle" location and 2) adding a supernatural twist. That being said, Devil is a surprisingly entertaining thriller despite the main characters never leaving the confines of the elevator.

THE BEAST MUST DIE
1974
Directed by Paul Annett

After eight people arrive to stay at an island estate, they all must determine which of them is a werewolf.

This Amicus Production film is based on James Blish's 1950 short story "There Shall Be No Darkness." It combines And Then There Were None with The Most Dangerous Game while adding a werewolf for good measure. The Beast Must Die is a kooky mystery movie that is most memorable for its gag of adding a thirty second interlude near the finale, asking viewers if they can determine who the werewolf is. If you enjoy vintage British horror and suspense, this one is worth at least one watch.

MINDHUNTERS
2004
Directed by Renny Harlin

FBI profiling trainees sent to an island as part of their exam begin to die. So which one is the killer?

Mindhunters is a slick-looking psycho-thriller that appeals to a younger, more hip audience. It boasts some questionable acting and a dated music video filming style, but the movie is more entertaining than it deserves to be. What do you expect from the director of Deep Blue Sea and The Covenant? A lot of stupid fun. That's what.

SAW II
2005
Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman

A detective and the police race to save eight people who have been trapped in a factory by the serial killer known as Jigsaw. But why were they chosen? What is the connection?

The original Saw is considered to be an inventive if not gory breath of fresh air for horror in a post-slasher revival era. Then Liosngate decided to amp things up by adding even more torture and victims. So if there was a movie in the whole franchise to blame for kickstarting the trend of splatter films from that decade, Saw II is more guilty than its predecessor. Without a doubt, there is an undeniable trashier element to this sequel, but if you want cheap thrills, this early sequel in the Saw collection isn't the worst way to fill that need.

FEAR ISLAND
2009
Directed by Michael Storey

A spring break weekend getaway at a remote island cabin ends in terror as the guests start to die.

So off the bat, Fear Island isn't a good movie if you want to be snobby about it. If you were expecting it to be, then you're naïve. But if you're okay with a Canadian whodunnit with a surprising twist ending and a Duff sister (not Hilary), then Fear Island is for you. The movie takes inspiration from A Perfect Getaway as well as Agatha Christie's works. There is a bit of a slasher element, too.

A MILLION
2009
Directed by Min-ho Jo

Eight contestants competing for a million dollars on a reality show set in the Australian Outback don't realize that they were purposely chosen because someone is seeking revenge.

A Million fails not because it's a bad movie, but because it doesn't adhere to the simplest part of Agatha Christie's formula. While there is a connection between the contestants, the identity of the killer is made clear way ahead of the ending. The reason why the contestants were selected is thankfully withheld until toward the finale.

IDENTITY
2003
Directed by James Mangold

Ten strangers stranded during a storm at a desolate hotel realize they're being systematically killed off by somene in the group.

Identity is known for its clever twist ending. It also boasts taut suspense and a more than adequate cast. The story isn't a direct adaptation of And Then There Was None, but the basic structure is there at the very least.

DEATH BELL
2008
Directed by Chang

The top students at an exclusive high school in Seoul are brought in for a Saturday study session. That is when a trap laid for them all begins: an unseen perpetrator unleashes a wave of torturous traps for the students based on their class ranks. But who is it and why are they being killed?

The South Korean import Death Bell combines mystery with gorno. The director used to make music videos so audiences are in for at least a polished-looking slasher. Also, the killer's identity and motive are both thankfully saved until the end. Due to the movie's modest success, a sequel called Death Bell 2: Bloody Camp was released in 2010.

CLUE
1985
Directed by Jonathan Lynn

A group of strangers are invited to a dinner by a mysterious host. Once the host's intentions are revealed, he is murdered. But by whom? The guests now figure out which of them is the killer before the police arrive.

This classic comedy inspired by the board game of the same name seems like it would be directly based on Agatha's work, but it only borrows from it when convenient. The connection between the guests is revealed early into the movie. And that connection isn't one out of revenge necessarily. So the "murder mystery" concept is more generalized here. It's still a fun movie well regarded by many for good reason.

FINAL DESTINATION 2
2003
Directed by David R. Ellis

When a group of strangers evade dying in a highway accident, they are each killed off by an unseen entity in the order they originally should have died. Now, they must consult a survivor from a similar chain of events. Or else they will be killed, too.

Believe it or not, Final Destination fits into the And Then There Were None formula better than you would expect. Group of strangers come together for a united cause or reason? Check. Someone (or in this case, something) is picking them off one by one? Check. They share a connection revealed at the end? Check. The only thing it's lacking is a killer's reveal. Everyone knows that the antagonist in this franchise is simply Death itself.
