In five days (September 16, 2018) J-pop icon and music legend Namie Amuro will retire from the entertainment industry after an illustrious 25 year long career. A legend such as herself deserves to go out with fanfare, and I'm here to bring it to you. Over the next couple of days I will pay tribute to Ms. Amuro's work; it's only what she deserves. Join me as I rank Namie's 14 number one songs.
namie wink.gif

308px-YOU_ARE_THE_ONE - Copy.jpg14. You Are The One (TK Presents Konetto)
Alright, this isn’t a solo Namie song but rather a charity single that she’s featured on. The song was produced and written by Komuro Tetsuya, a frequent collaborator of hers and another Jpop legend who packed it up in 2018. Still, it was a number one accredited to her. It’s a decent song but not better than the songs higher on this list. Listen here.

60s 70s 80s 1.jpg13. New Look 2008
This is her worst solo number one, I’m sorry. It’s not bad per se but it’s not really good either. New Look was a part of a triple A side single meaning that the physical single came with three songs on it. The single was actually titled “60s 70s 80s” and this song was to represent the 60s. It contains a sample of “Baby Love” by the Supremes if y’all aren’t trying to hear it. “New Look” gets washed by the other two songs on “60s 70s 80s”. Listen here.

200px-I_HAVE_NEVER_SEEN - Copy.jpg12. I Have Never Seen 1998
This is a boring song that was lucky to come towards the end of her iconic mid to late 90s run. Listen here.

200px-You're_my_sunshine - Copy.jpg11. You’re My Sunshine 1996
This was her fourth solo single. It’s more of the same and her prior singles did the sound better. Listen he
re.

200px-How_to_be_a_Girl - Copy.jpg10. How to Be A Girl 1997
I like this song and every song from here on. This isn’t the greatest but I love the intro. Listen here.

400px-a_walk_in_the_park - Copy.jpg
9. Walk In The Park 1996
This slaps. Her whole discography is so good. However I find this song to be a bit long, otherwise it’d be higher on the list for sure. I actually used to put off listening to this song when I’d listen to her singles when I was younger; the title “Walk in the Park” makes me think it’d be a sentimental ballad and I hate those (although Namie has done a fair bit of those, including some on this list). It’s a dance track though, like most of her early singles. Listen here.
60s 70s 80s 2.jpg8. Rock Steady 2008
Another song from the “60s 70s 80s” single. This song samples the Aretha Franklin song of the same name. It’s more dynamic than “New Look” is but still relies heavily on the sample. It’s a nice little dance bop tho, so I can’t hate it. Listen here.

200px-Dreaming_I_was_dreaming - Copy.jpg
7. Dreaming I Was Dreaming 1997
Ma decided to switch it up for this single, from her usual Eurobeat singles and romantic ballads to a trip-hop bop. This was another single I use to skip because it sounds like it’d be a ballad. I guess technically it is, but production wise it’s more interesting than I thought it would be. Listen here.

wild 1.jpg6. Dr. 2009
“Dr.” was a part of the "Wild/Dr." double a-side released in 2009. It’s about falling in love with a time traveler. I don’t care what anyone says, this song was about the ninth doctor, I can’t be convinced otherwise, fuck a “Dr. Chronos”. This song has a jarring marching band/drill sergeant section in it so it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. It’s mine though, and I’m writing the list. Listen here.

60s 70s 80s 1.jpg5. What a Feeling 2008
The list was sooo hard to rank at this point. This is the third part of the “60s 70s 80s” single and sampled, you guessed it, “Flashdance...What a Feeling” by Oscar winner Irene Cara. “What a Feeling” is by far the best utilization of a sample on this single. It had the better video too. Unfortunately, it didn’t fare as well as “New Look” on charts that split the three songs up. Still, intellectuals know that is was the best song from that single. Listen here.

wild 2.jpg4. Wild 2009
The second half of the “Wild/Dr.” double a-side. This song slaps. It’s a good dance tune and it didn’t age at all. Namie was also serving looks in the video. This is one of her best singles period from the 21st century. I’m forever bitter that Namie left this off of “Finally” in place of “Dr.” which got a shitty rearrangement. The “‘Wild/Dr.” combo would be Namie’s last number one (unless she surprise releases a final single this week). Listen here.

200px-Don't_wanna_cry.jpg3. Don’t Wanna Cry 1996
This shit hurt my ears when I first heard it. There’s a lot going on. The Eurobeat, the gospel choir, the R&B influence. But it all comes together for a unique and memorable song. I thought I’d never listen to this again, but now it’s one of my favorite songs by Ms. Amuro. A shit ton of others loved this song too single as it was the best selling single of 1996 and won her the “Grand Prix Award” at the Japan Record Awards (basically Japan’s version of Record of the Year at the Grammys). She remains the youngest artist to ever win it. Listen here.

175px-Chase_the_Chance.jpg2. Chase The Chance 1995
Namie’s early sound was heavily influenced by Eurobeat, hip-hop, and R&B. You hear all of that on Chase the Chance. The song was Namie’s first number one and was the tenth best selling song of 1995; it was released on December 4, 1995. This would make for a hit song in Japan or Korea even now. Listen here.

can you celebrate - Copy.jpg1. Can You Celebrate? 1997
This is a beautiful pop ballad. I especially love the intro because it reminds me of a Disney movie. This song is currently the best selling song by a female soloist in Japan and has been covered numerous times. You can feel her emotions through this song, and she seemed really happy with her life at this point. Listen here.

ONTD Investigates: Who is the untalented member of One Direction?

tumblr_m2g15jJGKv1rt9du9o1_500.png

Songwriter and Producer Savan Kotecha appeared on a podcast called And The Writer Is... where he discussed his time working with One Direction. He was behind many of their hit songs including What Makes You Beautiful, Kiss You and Live While We're Young. However after their second album Up All Night, the boy band were unhappy with the music they were making and Savan only contributed one song to their third album Midnight Memories.

Savan explained what went wrong while adding a blind item for ONTD members to speculate on:

"I think by album three, they — not all of them, but there was one or two, one especially— that was bitter about that fact [that they were a boy band]. And this particular one — he was not the talented one, he wasn’t the singer, he wasn’t the starhe started having something against me and [the other writers] and against that process.”

Who was he talking about? Here are our clues:

Clue #1

It's not Harry Styles
. In the same appearance on the podcast, Savan says of Harry:

"With Harry it was really interesting, because from album two you really saw that he was a fucking good writer. We did a song together for the third album — the only thing we did for the third album — called ‘Happily’, which I’m really proud of and I think he is as well… he was really great at bringing ideas.”

Clue #2

Was Savan sincere when he called this article GREAT? Or was he being shady with this response to One Direction member Louis Tomlinson's interview.

By Louis' defintion of his two bandmates, Zayn and Harry are not the ones Savan was talking about.

Clue #3

In another quote from Savan from the podcast, he says: "Maybe we could have been more inviting on the creative process on album two, and not been so authoritative."

Considering our mysterious and untalented member was unhappy with the band's music styling and edged out the writers from previous albums, perhaps they contributed more to the last 3 albums. Except for Harry - who we've ruled out - let's examine the songwriting credits for the 1D members:

Up All Night:
Liam: 3
Niall: 3
Louis: 3
Zayn: 3

Take Me Home:
Liam: 3
Niall: 2
Louis: 3
Zayn: 2

Midnight Memories:
Liam: 8
Niall: 2
Louis: 9
Zayn: 1

Four:
Liam: 8
Niall: 2
Louis: 8
Zayn: 3

Made In the A.M:
Liam: 4
Niall: 1
Louis: 6

ONTD Original: Let VH1's Charm School girls teach you some lessons (part trois)

Charm school with ricki lake

Congratulations, you survived the second week of school! Now is a great time to go over some important school lessons… as taught by the classy ladies of VH1’s Charm School.

Maybe you are in school, filling up your empty-ass head with important book learnin’ from dead white guys. Or maybe you are in the school of life, navigating a world of cutthroat thots and toxic patriarchal males. Either way, you could use some knowledge about charm, class and getting $$$.

There are two prerequisites for this course:

Charm School 101: ONTD Original: The most important lessons from VH1’s "Rock of Love: Charm School"

Charm School 102: ONTD Original: Re-learn the lessons from VH1’s Charm School

1. Thou Shalt Aspire To Be Charming

(This janky commandment didn’t have a title card.)

I'M A CHARMING WOMAN

Before there were Insta-thots, there were the girls of Charm School. They were the girls who had been rejected by Bret Michaels, Chance and Real on Rock of Love and Real Chance at Love. In short, they were hot messes.

When you’re prettier than all those other fucking bitches
prettier than all those bitches

They needed some cla$$, so Ricki Lake brought them to live in a tacky-ass McMansion in LA to teach them some lessons, even though Ricki Lake is tacky as fuck.

what is your problem

The lesson you should learn is that people who are dumber than you will try to teach you shit that you probably already know, and you will be surrounded by other dumbasses.

2.Thou Shalt Be A Model… Citizen

cs3 commandment 2

The girls had to do some charity werk by cleaning up a dirty river. But the real drama came when the two cliques of mostly black girls from Real Chance at Love clashed with the mostly white girls from Rock of Love.

The Real Chance of Love girls taught Brittany Starr to scream, “KISS MY BLACK ASS!”
kiss my black ass

kiss my black ass 2

The RoL girls said that the other girls were loud and angry, while the RCaL girls said that the other girls had drinking issues and behaved just as badly. The rift was tearing the house apart. Ultimately, Ricki eliminated Beverly for yanking another girl’s weave, and eliminated Kiki in the next episode for screaming at Bubbles for no reason.

But the lesson? Sadly, that #solidarityisforwhitewomen.

if anybody's a minority in the house

3.Thou Shalt Play Nicely With Others

cs3 commandment 3

The girls put on their sexiest outfits for a nursing home full of old people. Brittanya sat on men’s laps, Ashley let them squeeze her fake boob, and one old man recognized Brittany Starr from her pornos.

The lesson? Save your sexy ass for someone who will appreciate it.

4. Thou Shalt Treat Thy Body As A Temple

cs3 commandment 4

These bitches live lives of booze, late nights, junk food and sex—in other words, awesome lives. But all that partying does a number on your body, so they had to learn about werkin’ out, too.

smells like patron

They met some adorable chunky kids and had to teach them about exercise.

i can't my boobs are too heavy

Brittany Starr was eliminated for being an instigator and for being so fucking bizarre.

instigator

maybe i'm a little bit psycho

So, feel free to party and eat crap, but balance it with healthy shit, too.

5. Thou Shalt Face Thy Fears

cs 3 commandment 5

In this challenge, the ladies had to face their fears. They revealed their deepest, darkest fears, and a lot of them were about scary men. Baybaybay had a stalker, and she was afraid that he would kill her. Marcia’s father was abusive, and her mother stayed with him because they were desperately poor. Risky’s father molested her, and her family at first didn’t believe her. Bubbles was abused as a child, and was afraid of being attacked by a psycho man.

bubbles i'm afraid of psyho men

To conquer their fears, they had to go into A HAUNTED HOSPITAL. For fucking real, like on Nick’s season of The Bachelor.

cuss at the ghosts

Anyways, your lesson is never to trust men, and you are stronger than all your fucking fears.

how the fuck do i get out of here jesus christ

6. Thou Shalt Pull It Together

commandment 6

The ladies had to build playgrounds for underprivileged kids, but couldn’t figure out the directions so they didn’t finish. K.O. was making up dramatic stories, and the girls called her out for it. Then, K.O. offered Marcia, who had quit drinking, some vodka disguised as cranberry juice. She ended up leaving of her own accord. The lesson is that when you fuck up and get called out, just admit it and apologize.

7. Thou shalt make love, not war

commandment 7

Two men—a former Nazi skinhead and the gay man he tried to murder—talk to the girls about tolerance and love. The girls did not seem to be buying the Neo-Nazi’s weepy story.

brittanya

bubbles blink

risky ashley

After that, the girls went to a dog shelter and had to clean up dog poop.

The lesson is that people will expect you to forgive racist, bigoted pieces of shit, and then you will have to clean up more shit.

8. Thou Shalt Give It Thy All

commandment 8

This challenge was all about the girls doing charity… by riding a mechanical bull. Most of the girls raised also money by flirting, except for Bubbles, who tried to just use her personality (she lost.)

Ashley, who is a fucking hilarious bitch, also called Bubbles r*t*rd*ed… twice. She did apologize and admit she was wrong, but BUBBLES ended up going home because Ricki decided she had less to learn than Ashley.

me being a bitch

Baybaybay summarized Ashley very well:

still a bitch

Another important lesson? That people who are problematic usually don’t face consequences. Also, some bitches are just bitches. But the best revenge is going off and living your best damn life.

nicer ashley 1

nicer ashley 2

9. Thou Shalt Put It To Good Use

(This janky commandment also did not have a title card.)

VH1 flew the final four to New Orleans, where they were supposed to do some charity work. But instead, Ashley got wasted and went to strip clubs.

corn dog

stripper shoes 2

This lesson comes down to being a good person and working hard, then partying hard in your free time.

10. Thou Shalt Be Fully Charmed

commandment 10

Anyways, the winner of Charm School was Risky, who was pretty boring. But hands down, the most gif-able was Ashley.

lap dance fat man

being annoying

ash is she that stupid

ashley she is stupid as fuck

ash face

ash turn

ash shrug

ultimately, what you should learn from charm school is to go forth and be the classiest, trashiest, drunkest, soberest, slutty, prude-y bitch you want to be

ONTD Original: 5 Minor Love Interests That Should've Stayed (Television)

$

In life, some things just have to end... but if we're not talking reality, THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO. Whether these minor/supporting characters were just little dates or mini crushes that momentarily happened, we were hooked on the chemistry.

Some of these relationships did not end up working probably for sudden stupid reasons... and maybe these #FiveGuys🍔 should've stayed. 😬

💔 Gavin from Friends

I'm team anti-Ross and anti-Get-Off-The-Plane, and I was kinda here for Rachel's co-worker Gavin Mitchell (Dermot Mulroney). They started off as a elementary school type of crush where they teased each other in the beginning. Despite his smugness, we stan Gavin for his sarcastic humor, because he was hotter than Ross, and for those special moments where he was showing his sensitive and polite side.

Did he leave for the right reason? The Ross/Rachel relationship was a mess no one should have to be involved in, so I guess yes. But Rachel + Gavin, the true otp

💔 Dave from Gilmore Girls

We all know Lane was done dirty with how she ended up, including this relationship being #sabotaged because Dave Rygalski had to move away. Dave, played by Adam Brody, was the true unproblematic male of all Gilmore Girls, agreed? He was a music nerd, was a good #Christian boy (fitting for Lane's mom), and worked hard to get Ms. Kim's approval.

Did he leave for the right reason? College? anyways... #JusticeForLane#JusticeForDave

💔 Tyler from That's So Raven

In this That's So Raven ep Psychic Eye for the Sloppy Guy, Raven gets inspired by a makeover show, so she makeovers an artsy classmate Tyler who apparently has a crush on her. She found out she was being crushed on through a vision, but they never confronted each other about it. Raven made sure they stayed friends because she was prejudgemental. The gag was that he cleaned up GOOD.

Not only that, he was really nice and also a talented illustrator. IMO Raven could have had a long lasting relationship with a creative counterpart like herself, unlike being divorced now (jk we love Devon).

Did he leave for the right reason? The blame is on Raven's part. That flip book vision that was revealed true at the very end of the episode broke our hearts. It's all in the timing.

💔 Josh from Bob's Burgers

Josh (Ben Schwartz) sparked chemistry with Tina when they met in the milk aisle at a grocery store non-face-to-face, and grew fond for each other exclusively through conversation. They met again before their upcoming school dances where Josh invites Tina for his dance, but earlier before that Tina asked Jimmy Jr., only to get an indefinite answer. Jimmy Jr. was pressed that Tina had another option and only wanted to take her out once he found out about Josh.

Did he leave for the right reason? I never understood why Tina liked Jimmy Jr. so much when he's always disinterested. Then you give a romantic, nice, and talented dancer like Josh who actually likes Tina... and she's conflicted? This is self-hate.

💔 Grant from Happy Endings

Everybody loves Grant, who was played by James Wolk. Grant was smart, stylish, handy, environmental friendly, charming... everything Max probably needed but did not deserve. His only issue was that he 'cared too much of what people thought of him' but that worked out for the most part.

Did he leave for the right reason? WELL they broke up because Grant was for sure he didn't want kids in the future, while Max did not want to rule out that possibility. YES they broke it off for the right reasons because kids are a big decision factor for couples, but we'll miss Grant... and Happy Endings... and also #JusticeForPete who wanted to elope.
I guess Happy Endings were mature in dealing with their characters' wants and needs, unlike in Friends where Mike had to cough up that proposal to Phoebe last minute.

ONTD are you still unsettled and shipping any tv relationships that SHOULD'VE worked out?

I've decided to start a series of original posts where I include some of the more underrated content creators on Youtube. And what better way to start than with one of the largest groups on the platform: beauty influencers! Below I've selected a handful of my favorite influencers, so please be sure to check them out.

JKissa

JKissa is a beauty influencer from Los Angeles, CA. She's an animal lover who's outspoken about the mistreatment of animals by cosmetic labs and only uses items that are cruelty-free. She possesses a charming personality and I enjoy watching many of her videos because they're very relaxing.

Laurasia Andrea

Laurasia is from Detroit, Michigan. Most of her videos consist of her dying a brand new wig that she also happened to sew herself and then putting together a whole look to suit it.

Thomas Halbert

Thomas Halbert is a beauty influencer known for giving his brutally honest opinions (don't sue me Jordan Byers) about products and is known for posting controversial videos that cause him to end up in hot water. He's known for being removed from several brands' PR lists.

Ivan Lam

Most of Ivan's videos focus heavily on asian beauty products and skincare. He's relaxing to watch and knows a lot about skincare. If you're currently looking for new skincare products to check out, be sure to check him out.

An Knook

If I'm looking for a super glam look, I always find myself watching videos from An. From the Netherlands, she's another talented beauty influencer who posts GORGEOUS looks.

John MacLean

John MacLean is a working makeup artist from the United Kingdom who portrays himself a 20,000 year old immortal being and finds himself drawn to seamlessness. He's a charming person with an interesting way of speaking.

Male model Jordan Torres body shames fellow gym-goer on Instagram, gets rightfully called out

$

Jordan Torres, 27, has been an object of Internet thirst since beginning his modeling career in 2011. In the ensuing seven years, the 6'2" Puerto Rican has grown from a lean rugger to a musclebound "gorilla" (his preferred noun, but the 🦍 emoji will do) before the cameras of such renowned photographers as Brian Jamie and Greg Vaughan, garnering a social media following of 204,000 and counting.

Now, Torres can add 'body shamer' to his growing list of descriptors. Earlier this month, the self-proclaimed "Bronx bully" lived up to his nickname when he posted a photo of himself at the gym with a younger, considerably less jacked patron with the caption "lil homie ain't gonna get big if he keep textin 🐒 > 🦍." And while many of his followers commented their assent, others were not having it.

"You don't need to talk bad about someone to make yourself feel better," wrote one disappointed fan. "That kid could be starting at the gym. Pretty sure you didn't come out of your momma all buff and shit." Another asked why Torres didn't offer the boy encouragement instead of ridiculing him online.

In response, Torres changed the caption multiple times before landing on "everybody hates the big ape 🦍," simultaneously offering no apology and victimizing himself in typical male fashion. He then returned to his regularly scheduled thirst trapping.

ETA: Since the publication of this post, Torres has deleted the post in question. Still no sign of an apology though.

Harry Styles is a Thief Part II: An ONTD Original on how Gonzo was imitated for years

$

It’s been just a little over a year since I first exposed occasional singer and retired actor Harry Edward Styles, 24 [citation needed], for the fashion thief that he is. I am stunned he continues to take from others unscathed. In all my years in journalism nothing could quite prepare me for this next theftvestigation.

It’s one thing to copy a person, but to copy a poor muppet? That’s right, Styles isn’t all that stylish and has resorted to taking fashion cues from Gonzo of Sesame Street and The Muppet Show. Chicken and all, and for a Gucci campaign and you can’t even give him credit or a shout out? Something. For shame. Thanks to users on Twitter, this was brought to my attention. You already know the drill.

Theft Rating
High and snatched in plain Caucasian daylight straight off Gonzo’s back.

Theft Rating
Sky High Superman himself is shook.

Theft Rating
High, a timed electronic device with a new single by Louis Tomlinson was left behind that a bomb squad was called to disarm it.

Theft Rating
Low, but we see you like we see that receding hairline Harold.

Theft Rating
High and snatched off the hangers at the Haus of Sesame.

Theft Rating
High even Hamburglar is disgusted.

But what does fashion victim Gonzo think of all of this?

There you have it, words from yet another victim who will surely get ridiculed on social media by stans.

Read my previous theftvestigations with your morning coffee ☕️ if you’d like.

ONTD ORIGINAL: The Accuracy of Films Adapted from Books PART 2

$
0
0
So I made this and have been considering what to put into a sequel post and now I have.
Again, be mindful of spoilers, especially in the second entry.

The Hunger Games (Specifically, Catching Fire) by Suzanne Collins
Accuracy: Another 80%. A few small things were ignored;
Bonnie and Twill; Two runaways from District 8 who Katniss finds in the woods, were omitted. These characters do drop hints at the growing rebellion. Haymitch’s games weren’t shown, while the Quarter Quell games in this were extended far more than in the book.

And of course, Katniss shouldn't be played by a 100% white actress, but Suzanne Collins didn't care, and the films have been made. Moving on.
📚
The House With a Clock In Its Wallsby John Bellairs

The book was written in 1973 - I'm surprised it took this long for a film adaptation. Seems like it would have been ripe for around the early 00's.
Spoilers; As the movie just recently came out!

Accuracy: 95% (? I saw the movie and skimmed the Wiki page)
In the book, Lewis is an overweight kid, while in the movie, he’s not.

In the movie,Lewis raises the evil magician Isaac Izard, on a non-specified evening in the film, while in the book he raises Selenna, his wife, on Halloween night.

It's a really entertaining little movie. And apparently, there were another ELEVEN books in the series after this! Plenty of sequel fodder.

📚

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Accuracy: Your Mileage May Vary.

The books were funny. This was not.
Book Annabeth was blonde, and here, Alexandria Daddario is not.
Book Grover was a white guy, and Brandon Jackson is not.

But the biggest crime is, again, this movie wasn't funny. The story beats are fairly accurate, but who cares if the movie doesn't have the spirit of the book?

Surprisingly, this got a sequel three years later in 2013 based upon the second book. Which is amazing considering how much Riordan hated the first one. I wouldn't bet on us seeing The Titan's Curse any time soon.

📚
Cirque Du Freak [A Living Nightmare] by Darren Shan
(Also titled "The Vampire's Assistant" Depending on Global Location)

Accuracy: What Accuracy?

Ooh, I hate this movie.

Bad book adaptations are nothing new. I don't expect perfect translations, but the incompetency of the script and writing here? Far, far too much.

Because it shoved together three books, It's hard to pin down exactly how poorly it was adapted.

This movie encompasses books 1,3, and 11. And even then, it's book 3 in name only, as they've eschewed Darren going to school and meeting Debbie Hemlock, a black girl who loves reading, and replaced her with a white girl with a monkey tail. So it's not really book 3, I guess?

The first book is adapted accurately enough. The eleventh was just a horrendously bad choice for this conclusion. Not only does this mean that 90% of the vampire shenanigans are completely ignored, but the 11th books is almost the culmination of two warring factions of Vampires, reduced to.... that.

The good points were the production design and value and the talented cast of veterans and semi-newcomers - All except the actual lead himself.

Fun fact; It was also adapted into a manga series - all twelve books. I never did find #12...

📚
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Accuracy: 20%
Another 'In Name Only' entry - but one wholly to the film's benefit. Instead of a bunch of word-vomit masturbation over obscure 70's and 80's games - Also, roleplaying Wargames - the challenges are completely reworked for the film, making them visually interesting  and not so much of a slog to get through.
Also, Wade was an incel-y Nice Guy in the book - basically a creep. The movie slightly improves that by having everyone tell him to wake up and get real, that this is all fake, you don't know us (There's a stronger teamwork aspect in the film), and you need to unplug.

I liked it better than the book, but that bar was six feet underground to overcome.

ONTD Reading Challenge (October): The Darkest Timeline

$
0
0

It's time for the October reading challenge! This month, read a dystopian or (post) apocalyptic book!

Here are 10 suggestions of books for this month. As always, these are just suggestions, and you're welcome to find a different title that better suits your taste. Don't forget to tell us all about it in the Goodreads group!

1. The Stand (Stephen King)

This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death.

And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides or are chosen. A world in which good rides on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abigail and the worst nightmares of evil are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.

2. The Rising (Brian Keene)

Nothing stays dead for long. The dead are returning to life, intelligent, determined…and very hungry. Escape seems impossible for Jim Thurmond, one of the few left alive in this nightmare world. But Jim’s young son is also alive and in grave danger hundreds of miles away. Despite astronomical odds, Jim vows to find him—or die trying.

Joined by an elderly preacher, a guilt-ridden scientist and an ex-prostitute, Jim sets out on a cross-country rescue mission. Together they must battle both the living and the living dead…and the even greater evil that awaits them at the end of their journey.

3. The Passage (Justin Cronin)

An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy—abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape—but he can’t stop society’s collapse. And as Amy walks alone, across miles and decades, into a future dark with violence and despair, she is filled with the mysterious and terrifying knowledge that only she has the power to save the ruined world.

4. Battle Royale (Koushun Takami)

A class of 42 junior high school students are taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided with weapons and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing.

5. Roadside Picnic (Arkady & Boris Strugatsky)

Red Schuhart is a stalker, one of those young rebels who are compelled, in spite of extreme danger, to venture illegally into the Zone to collect the mysterious artifacts that the alien visitors left scattered around. His life is dominated by the place and the thriving black market in the alien products. But when he and his friend Kirill go into the Zone together to pick up a “full empty,” something goes wrong. And the news he gets from his girlfriend upon his return makes it inevitable that he’ll keep going back to the Zone, again and again, until he finds the answer to all his problems.

6. A Canticle for Leibowitz (Walter Miller Jr)

In a nightmarish ruined world slowly awakening to the light after sleeping in darkness, the infant rediscoveries of science are secretly nourished by cloistered monks dedicated to the study and preservation of the relics and writings of the blessed Saint Isaac Leibowitz. From here the story spans centuries of ignorance, violence, and barbarism, viewing through a sharp, satirical eye the relentless progression of a human race damned by its inherent humanness to recelebrate its grand foibles and repeat its grievous mistakes.

7. Parable of the Sower (Octavia Butler)

When unattended environmental and economic crises lead to social breakdown, no one is safe.

In a night of fire and death, Lauren Olamina, the young daughter of a minister, loses her family and home and ventures out from their ravaged gated community into the unprotected American landscape.

But what begins as a fight for survival soon leads to something much more: a startling vision of human destiny ... and the birth of a new faith.

8. The Children of Men (PD James)

The human race has become infertile, and the last generation to be born is now adult. Civilization itself is crumbling as suicide and despair become commonplace. Oxford historian Theodore Faron, apathetic toward a future without a future, spends most of his time reminiscing. Then he is approached by Julian, a bright, attractive woman who wants him to help get her an audience with his cousin, the powerful Warden of England. She and her band of unlikely revolutionaries may just awaken his desire to live . . . and they may also hold the key to survival for the human race.

9. Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel)

One snowy night a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies onstage during a production of King Lear. Hours later, the world as we know it begins to dissolve. Moving back and forth in time—from the actor's early days as a film star to fifteen years in the future, when a theater troupe known as the Traveling Symphony roams the wasteland of what remains—this suspenseful, elegiac, spellbinding novel charts the strange twists of fate that connect five people: the actor, the man who tried to save him, the actor's first wife, his oldest friend, and a young actress with the Traveling Symphony, caught in the crosshairs of a dangerous self-proclaimed prophet.

10. Severance (Ling Ma)

Candace Chen, a millennial drone self-sequestered in a Manhattan office tower, is devoted to routine: her work, watching movies with her boyfriend, avoiding thoughts of her recently deceased Chinese immigrant parents. So she barely notices when a plague of biblical proportions sweeps the world.

Candace joins a small group of survivors, led by the power-hungry Bob, on their way to the Facility, where, Bob promises, they will have everything they need to start society anew. But Candace is carrying a secret she knows Bob will exploit. Should she escape from her rescuers?

Other titles that fit this month's challenge: 1984 (George Orwell), Brave New World (Aldous Huxley), Blindness (José Saramago), Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury), The Road (Cormac McCarthy), The Handmaid's Tale (Margaret Atwood), Never Let Me Go (Kazuo Ishiguro), The Girl With All the Gifts (MR Carey), Dread Nation (Justina Ireland), The Knife of Never Letting Go (Patrick Ness), The Wolf Road (Beth Lewis), The First Days (Rhiannon Frater), The Immortal Rules (Julie Kagawa), The Dog Stars (Peter Heller), Bird Box (Josh Malerman), I Am Legend (Richard Matheson)

15 Songs to Get You Into the Halloween Spirit

October begins tomorrow and some of us are already listening to Christmas music, BUT we can't forget about Halloween. Although some of these do not actually have explicit themes to Halloween or dark subjects, the tones in the music can be fitting to the overall vibe.

Here are 15 songs by women to boot "Monster Mash" out of your old playlist.

15. "Bloody Mary" - Lady Gaga

The screams, distorted vocal effects, and monk chants in the bridge makes "Bloody Mary" Gaga's creepiest song to date.
Any other contenders from her? She had a whole ep/mini album/album called The Fame Monster. A TFM track for Halloween? Groundbreaking.

14. "Same Ol' Mistakes" - Rihanna

Any other contenders from her?"Disturbia" (WRITTEN by a noted abuser) and some tracks off Rated R would be TOO pon de nose. "Same Ol' Mistakes" always sounded like it could be played in a 70's slasher film to me.

13. "Scary" - Britney Spears

This is one of her lesser known Japanese bonus track'd songs but nonetheless a very club-friendly Halloween song.

12. "Seven Devils" - Florence and the Machine

I have to admit I was introduced to this song by the show Revenge, but this could also be used in a horror movie.

11. "Sweet Dreams" - Beyonce

Okay maybe nothing about this song necessarily screams 'Halloween' aside from the intro of this music video. But we SHAN'T forget the iconic 'MY GUILTY PLEASURE I AIN'T GOIN NOWHERE' krump move.
Any other contenders from her? People might cite "Haunted" off self titled as a fitting song, but it's a little too ethereal for the occasion imo.

10. "Lolita" - Lana Del Rey

Sad pop queen Lana has a whole bunch of dark songs throughout her catalog, but "Lolita" always gave me dramatic witchy vibes to it. Am I the only one?

9. "Zombie" - Natalia Kills

I was gonna go with another unconventional choice because Perfectionist is full of relevant songs, but you can't go wrong with "Zombie".
Long live Natalia Kills.

8. "Walking On Air" - Kerli

A name you probably haven't heard in almost 10 years, Kerli served us illuminati & voodoo doll visuals wrapped up in a gothic lolita aesthetic for "Walking On Air". Does the ending of the video still creep me out? Maybe. A little.

7. "Heads Will Roll" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The opening chords of "Heads Will Roll" make the song for me. Some flops out there associate the song with a certain remix, but the original will always be better.

6. "Velvet Rope" - Janet Jackson

From an experimental masterpiece of an album, The Velvet Rope's title track samples Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells", which is also the theme of The Exorcist.
Any other contenders from her? To go in a tongue in cheek route you might also wanna play "Black Cat".

5. "Secret (Shh)" - Charli XCX

Charli doesn't mention what's the #secret she's going to share, but the drawn out bass and bells makes the entire song feel like a suspense sequence of a movie.

4. "Many Moons" - Janelle Monae

This song is tailored to the fictional character Cindi Mayweather and the dystopian world of Metropolis that Janelle Monae introduced us to. Nothin scarier than realizing we actually live in a world of political turmoil Janelle tells us about through a sci-fi lens.

3. "Birds of Prey (Reuben Wu Ladytron Remix)" - Christina Aguilera

Ladytron member Reuben Wu remixed "Birds of Prey" and amped up the tempo of the original track. The chimey bells that were added can also depict a Christmas gone wrong type of scenario.

2. "Simon Says" - Allie X

Allie X turned the childhood game of Simon says into a creepy song about being possessed and dependent in an imaginary being.
Any other contenders from her?"Bitch" is her next closest dark synth pop anthem.

1. "Lost in the Girl" - Kwamie Liv

From my research, Kwamie Liv is a Scandinavian artist, but this song has a direct French influence that sounds like it could have been produced by Stromae. The intro with Kwamie's low husky voice switches up to a bang of electronic synths and samples.

What festive songs are you playing for this month?

Cigarettes After Sex

My Favorite Song: Each Time You Fall In Love

Latest Album: Cigarettes After Sex (2017)

"Cigarettes After Sex is an American ambient pop band formed in 2008, from El Paso, Texas, founded by Greg Gonzalez. The band is known for their ethereal and often dream-like musical style, lyrics often based on the themes of romance and love, as well as Gonzalez's ethereal and "androgynous" voice. While marketed as an ambient pop band, Cigarettes After Sex are also considered to be shoegaze, dream pop and slowcore.

The band's debut extended play (EP), I., was released in 2012, with the song "Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby" eventually becoming a sleeper hit through commercial licensing. After the release of the standalone single "Affection" in 2015, the band released their self-titled debut studio album on June 2017 to positive reviews."

Molly Burch

My Favorite Song: To The Boys

Latest Album: Please be Mine (2017)

"Molly Burch is an Austin-based singer-songwriter whose music reflects heartbreak and loss. She is the lead vocalist and writer, backed by four musicians, and she and her band have toured with Sallie Ford. Burch studied jazz vocal performance in college and gravitated towards vocalists such as Nina Simone and Billie Holiday. A reviewer described her music as an "intoxicating ode to an unrequited love" as from a "smoky club chanteuse". Her vocal style has been compared to that of Angel Olsen."

Ten Sleep

My Favorite Song: Moving Lights

Latest Album: Suburban Lore (2017)

"I couldn't really find any information about this band, but this is the tiny info from their website: Ontario, independent. indie something alternative whatever. So yeah that all the info I have on them lol"

Lonely Benson

My Favorite Song: Peculiar Paradise

Latest Album: Lonely Benson (2018)

"Once again couldn't really find any info, sorry"

Noire

My Favorite Song: Baby Blue

Latest Album: Some Kind of Blue (2017)

"Sigh...sorry could find that much info about them either aside this from their Facebook. From: Sidney. Genre: Reverb heavy blues. Influencer: Mazzy Star, Neil Young, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, AIR, Beach House, Wim Wenders, Ry Cooder, Jeff Buckley, Sophia Coppola, David Lynch"

No Vacation

My Favorite Song: Mind Fields

Latest Album: Intermission (2017)

"No Vacation began in early 2015, and quickly received attention for the nostalgic bedroom-pop sounds off of their debut mixtape, Amo XO, and surf-rock single, Dræm Girl. A few months following the release of their second mixtape, Summer Break Mixtape, No Vacation went on an indefinite hiatus. Sabrina Mai, Marisa Saunders, Nat Lee, and Harrison Spencer officially reassembled in 2017 after playing shows under various names and a few line-up changes.

Since their reunion, No Vacation has released two singles, "Mind Fields" and "Yam Yam", off of their new EP, Intermission, which was released by Topshelf Records in November 2017. As they transition out of San Francisco, No Vacation will bring the novice “wavy-gravy dream-pop” sounds of Intermission to Brooklyn."

A town's teenagers are being stalked in their dreams by someone named Freddy Krueger. Yet when they die in their dreams, they die in real life. So now Nancy and her friends must find a way to stop Freddy whille staying awake. Or else the nightmares will become reality.

When you think slashers, you might think of A Nightmare on Elm Street. You recall Freddy Krueger's disfigured face and those signature bladed gloves, which Wes Craven created after being inspired by his cat. The basic plot of the original Elm Street movie was loosely based on news stories of Khmer refugees who were reported as being too scared to sleep. A few even died, which led to doctors calling the phenomenon "Asian Death Syndrome." The remainder of the Elm franchise kept the dream motif in tact, especially in the earlier entries. The Elm Street mythology ties into the idea that if we die in our dreams, we will die in reality. As many of us already know based on experience, that isn't true. If anything, most of us are jolted awake once we die in our dreams.

BAD DREAMS
1988
Directed by Andrew Fleming

After the lone survivor of a suicide cult wakes up thirteen years later in a hospital's psychiatric ward, the other patients begin to mysteriously die. Has the ghost of the cult leader returned to make sure his former follower joins him in the afterlife?

This obscure quasi-slasher is similar to A Nightmare on Elm Street. Yet it's more ambiguous and is not catered toward the teen demo as the aforementioned movie. There is a twist at the end that you'll either like or not. At the time of Bad Dreams' original release, critics -- including Roger Ebert -- trashed the movie, but in following years, it has developed a small cult following (pun intended).

HORSEHEAD
2014
Directed by Romain Basset

A young woman named Jessica tries to uncover the truth behind the nightmares she's had since she was a child. After her maternal grandmother passes away, the nightmares become worse. So now Jessica must use her knowledge of dream psychology as well as lucid dreaming if she wants to uncover the origin of her nightmares.

Depite the title, this English language French film has no horse monster picking off people in the movie. Instead it is a surreal flick with some good visuals but not much substance.

BEFORE I WAKE
2016
Directed by Can Evrenol

A couple adopts a boy whose bad dreams are manifesting into something horrific.

This Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Hush) project had trouble finding distribution in the U.S. for a while. So the director's fans had to find other means of watching this movie before it was made available on Netflix. Was the wait worth it? Well, Before I Wake has an intriguing concept and some strong performances. On the downside, the special effects were not top-notch. The movie also adds to the belief that foster children are inherently troubled or damaged.

PAPERHOUSE
1988
Directed by Bernard Rose

A lonely child finds solace by befriending an ill boy living in the dream world she's created.

Bernard Rose's Paperhouse is often lumped in with the horror genre, but it's more of a fantasy drama. It's a breath of fresh air for those wanting something different if they've seen too many cheesy '80s horror movies. But remember, it's also quite sad.

THE CELL
2000
Directed by Tarsem Singh

A capable social worker is persuaded to use a new technology so she can enter a comatose serial killer's mind and then learn the whereabouts of his latest abducted victim.

Jennifer Lopez starred in this popular thriller that boasts a nightmarish aesthetic. The costumes and visuals are the biggest draws here, and it's no surprise the movie is remembered for those things. Critics were divided on The Cell itself, though, complaining of the emphasis on the aspects of the movie that fans enjoyed.

THE SLAYER
1982
Directed by J.S. Cardone

An artist named Kay, her brother, and their siblings all end up on a small island off the coast of U.S. Georgia. Kay has been plagued by reoccuring and disturbing dreams for as long as she remembers. In them, she witnesses her loved ones' deaths at the hands of something evil. Now on the isle, Kay's dreams are starting to come true.

This slower-paced slasher from the early 1980s really plays up the theme of dreams. Maybe a little too much. However, watch carefully as there's a surprising amount of nuance to The Slayer. Even the way the story is told allows some room for theories on the order of cause and effect. If you want a slasher that requires some critical thinking, check this one out. Just avoid looking at the Blu-ray art that spoils the ending's big reveal.

SLUMBER
2017
Directed by Jonathan Hopkins

A sleep doctor helps a family that's been affected by severe parasomnia.

Thanks to fairly good acting and set pieces, and ample amounts of tension instead of gore, Slumber coasts by as a spooky scientific ghost story. Between this and Dead Awake, another horror movie about sleep paralysis, Slumber is more compelling. For those who like trivia, the word "nightmare" or "night-mare" was originally used to describe the phenonemon of sleep paralysis (the feeling of a malevolent entity sitting on or near you as you are immobilized) before it evolved into its modern meaning.

SLAUGHTERHOUSE ROCK
1988
Directed by Dimitri Logothetis

After a man starts to experience the dreams of those that died at the prison on Alcatraz Island, he, his brother, and their friends all visit the island. There, they begin to fall victim to a wicked demon.

Does the plot sound silly? Yes. And that's basically all the movie is - silly. Its highlight is musician Toni Basil playing the ghostly rocker that comes to the characters' aid.

IN DREAMS
1999
Directed by Neil Jordan

A suburban mother has a psychic connection with a serial killer who targets childen - including her own.

This late '90s dreamy thriller has an intriguing plot, but the acting is all over the place, and the pacing doesn't help matters either.

ONTD Halloween Original™: 25 Movie Posters with Optical Illusions

The Mist© 2007 MGM

"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination."
- Jim Jarmusch, director of Broken Flowers and Only Lovers Left Alive

There is an art to making film posters. But that art is not always creative or even original. Action movie posters tend to be orange and blue, comedy posters may have two actors standing back-to-back, and movies about sex might feature a between-the-legs shot. So there are clichés to posters.

What about horror movies? One of the most common tropes is using environment or scenery to form a "hidden" face, skull, or something else entirely. Some viewers will catch this immediately, and then others will need a few seconds.

So here is a collection of posters from the horror and suspense genre that partook in the optical illusion trend. As you can see, not every graphic designer can pull it off.

CABIN FEVER
2002
Directed by Eli Roth

While vacationing at a cabin in the woods, a group of friends are driven to madness as they are infected with a flesh-eating virus.

Eli Roth's directorial debut is a memorable one because of the visceral imagery it contains. It may be responsible for the wave of gore and torture porn that inundated the horror genre in the 2000s. Cabin Fever was inspired by Roth's real-life experience of contracting a skin infection while vacationing overseas in Iceland. The poster has the modern staple of trees forming a skull's eyes and nose, and the house forming the mouth. The movie's sequel and prequel both have posters with similar yet less efffective designs.

SHROOMS
2007
Directed by Paddy Breathnach

Tourists and their guide searching for psilocybin mushrooms in the Irish woods find that they might not be as alone as they originally thought.

The designer of this silly slasher's poster didn't break any molds by using mushrooms and open space to form a skull-like visage, but they did it creatively at least. The movie itself is a trip yet not nearly psychedlic enough considering.

THE DESCENT
2005
Directed by Neil Marshall

A year after a tragic accident, a British woman joins her friends in a trip to North Carolina,USA. There, they enter an unexplored cave system. Quickly, though, they realize that something dangerous and hungry is lurking inside.

This beloved British horror boasts one poster design that plays homage to Salvador Dali's famous skull portrait. Most people didn't realize the connection, though.

HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK
1980
Directed by Ruggero Deodato

After the hosts of a posh party reject them, two men return to take the guests hostage as well as torture them.

This Italian exploitation flick was deemed a "video nasty" in the UK at one point for good reason. Content aside, this movie has one of the most stunning painted posters, which has paved the way for homogeneous designs today.

PREMONITION
2007
Directed by Mennan Yapo

A woman is informed that her husband has died the day before. The next day, her husband is well and alive as if nothing happened. Yet the following day, her husband is dead. She believes her days are happening out of order, but no one believes her. So now she has to find a way to save her husband.

Despite popular belief among cinephiles, this Sandra Bullock movie is not a remake of the Japanese movie Yogen, which translates to "premonition." The Bullock flick isn't horror by any means nor is it exactly thrilling. It's a fantasy drama that was panned by critics. The poster sports tree branches that eerily form Bullock's facial features.

DEATH SHIP
1980
Directed by Alvin Rakoff

A cruise ship sinks after being hit by a mysterious freighter. The survivors board the strange ship without knowing that it was once a WWII Nazi torture vessel.

This movie isn't exactly memorable, but the poster is. The 2002 movie poster for Ghost Ship ripped off Death Ship's poster. Or rather, it tried to.

GHOST SHIP
2002
Directed by Steve Beck

A salvage crew comes across a seemingly empty ship from the 1960s. Upon boarding, though, they experience paranormal activity.

And here is the poster that tried to copy Death Ship's, but there's nothing subtle about this at all. That being said, Ghost Ship is the better of the two movies, if not only for the amazing opening sequence.

THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN
2014
Directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon

Every Halloween, the small town of Texarkana hosts the annual drive-in showing of the 1976 movie -- 'The Town That Dreaded Sundown' -- based on the infamous 1946 "Moonlight Murders."  One year, a copycat Phantom Killer chooses his first victim in a series of grisly deaths to come.

This meta slasher about the original Town movie is well-made and full of some beautiful cinematography. It's rare to see a movie of this subgenre of horror to have such artful camera work and editing. The poster, on the other hand, is drab. The backdrop of the skull formed by trees was an odd touch.

THE WINDMILL
2016
Directed by Nick Jongerius

An Australian woman and other tourists in Amsterdam get stranded at an abandoned shed next to a notorious windmill. Soon, members of the group start to disappear one-by-one.

You might think this is going to be a run-of-the-mill (pun unintended) slasher. Wrong. There's much more going on in this Dutch movie. Maybe too much. But at least the filmmakers tried. The poster has a cloud resembling a skull in the background. Although really, it looks more like a panda.

IDENTITY
2003
Directed by James Mangold

Ten strangers stranded during a storm at a desolate hotel realize they're being systematically killed off.

The poster for this clever mystery has a hand composed of a face and several bodies posing as fingers.

MATI SURI
2009
Directed by Ab Ac

Having been confronted by a woman claiming she's pregnant with her fiancé's baby, a distraught bride attempts suicide. She instead survives and an evil presence is now stalking her. The only way to stop the entity may require another near death experience.

The doctors skillfully form the features of a skull on the poster of this obscure Indonesian horror movie.

TALES OF HALLOWEEN
2015
List of directors

Ten spooky, interwoven stories taking place on Halloween night in a suburb are told.

This horror anthology doesn't quite measure up thanks to inconsistency, but the poster is welcomingly festive.

THE FOG
2005
Directed by Rupert Wainwright

A coastal town is attacked by vengeful spirits brought in by the fog.

This movie is an example of a really poor remake that came out during the boom of horror reimaginings circa 2000s. Even if you don't like the original, don't subejct yourself to the 2005 version. However, the face formed in the fog on the poster is nicely done.

CHERNOBYL DIARIES
2012
Directed by Brad Parker

When a group of tourists pay to visit Pripyat, they learn during their exploration of the area that they are definitely not alone.

This lukewarm horror movie about the Chernobyl disaster has a lot of glaring problems. One of which is the poster. There's supposed to be a giant radiation hazard symbol formed by dark clouds in the sky, but it looks more like fan blades.

V/H/S
2012
List of directors

A group of people hired by a third party to steal a coveted VHS cassette from a house get more than they bargained for when they watch the footage on the other video tapes.

The first entry in this franchise of incoherent anthologies makes proper use of its concept by forming a Punisher-like skull on the poster with the VHS tape spines.

PATHOLOGY
2008
Directed by Marc Schölermann

A group of pathology interns play a game to see who can commit the perfect murder.

The busy poster for this thriller is understated at first, but once you see the skull design, you'l be in awe.

THE DINOSAUR PROJECT
2012
Directed by Sid Bennett

While searching for a cryptid in the Congo, a British expedition team is transported to another world where dinosaurs still exist.

This British sci-fi movie utilizes the found-footage filming style, which works for the most part. With good special effects and earnest acting, The Dinosaur Project is fun. And the artwork on one of the posters is downright gorgeous. There's a fanart poster for Jurassic World that poorly emulates it, too.

MURDER IN THE DARK
2013
Directed by Dagen Merrill

People camping in a Turkish ghost town play a game of "Murder in the Dark" that goes too far.

This movie was shot in an experimental, improvised fashion. That makes it worth one watch, even if there is no payoff in Murder in the Dark. The poster isn't too exciting, but at least they didn't use trees to make the skull, right?

LAKE PLACID: LEGACY
2018
Directed by Darrell Roodt

Young explorers foolish enough to enter an abandoned facility on an island in the center of a lake encounter an unstoppable predator.

This Syfy TV-movie will never come close to the underrated brilliance of the original Lake Placid, but the home video art is striking.

THE REMAINING
2014
Directed by Casey La Scala

As friends attend a wedding, the apocalypse happens. Now, everyone must examine their life and their choices during the end of days.

This religious horror movie is preachy and should be avoided, but the poster is pretty slick.

CHILL
2007
Directed by Serge Rodnunsky

A man suspects his new landlord, who keeps the building very cold, has been dead for ages and he is harvesting bodies to keep himself alive.

This low-budget horror movie looks unwatchable, but at least the poster is crafty.

TUSK
2014
Directed by Kevin Smith

A podcaster visits a reclusive and disturbed man with a penchant for walruses.

Kevin Smith's dive into body horror, Tusk, has a delightful poster that is so simple yet effective.

WISH UPON
2017
Directed by John R. Leonetti

A teenager finds a Chinese music box that grants wishes at a deadly price.

Wish Upon is more or less a combination of the "The Monkey Paw" story and Final Destination. The ending is also mean-spirited if you like tha. The poster takes the inner workings of the movie's music box and creates a skull.

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
1991
Directed by Jonathan Demme

To catch another serial killer still on the loose, an F.B.I. cadet enlists the help of an incarcerated serial killer.

The moth on the poster looks like a Death's-head hawkmoth, but if you look closely enough, you'll see how the graphic designer incorporated a prominent Dali inspired skull image.

CLOVERFIELD
2008
Directed by Matt Reeves

A group of friends film their escape as a mysterious monster attacks New York City.

The main poster for the hit 2008 sci-fi movie has a few Easter eggs. One: in the sky, a cloud looking like the head of the film's monster can be seen. Here is an edited image that highlights this better. And two: if one mirrors the smoke on the lower right side of the poster, you'll see the Cloverfield monster again. Here is the mirrored image to better illustrate this.

ONTD Investigates™: Does Tom Hardy Make Out With Venom In Sony's New Film?

$
0
0

ONTD, what was thought to be a weekend with one gay film at the theaters may have turned into a competition for homosexual rights. Lady Gaga's A Star Is Born opening this weekend has yanked her little monsters out of the cracks in the floor after they ran away from Joanne land as they started making up negative reviews for the film's competition, also opening this weekend: Sony's unnecessary disaster Venom.

But as it turns out, a couple of tweets from viewers who saw the film had the gays questioning: Does Venom feature a kiss between Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy without a muzzle) and Venom (the evil alien symbiote that wants to consume everything in its path #relatable)? Have we accidentally pitted two groundbreaking LGBTQ films against each other when we should be sharing all the coins with both of them?

My investigation led to an emotional rollercoaster... and a harrowing journey.

Phase 1: Denial

We begin with the influx of both the little monsters trashing the movie and the DCEU fans who want to revere everything that isn't Marvel. How else could anyone sit through"Why did you say that name????" and claim to be a Snyder fan? Bots and fans alike took to twitter to share the following message, "i am the biggest marvel fan but I just watched #Venom and I don't know what to say. Easily the worst movie this year. I expected so much better and now I'm just disappointed."

But one tweet in particular caught my attention,"Lots of democrat nonsense, pushing LGBT agenda down throat too."Was there an LGBTQ agenda in Venom? Were there gays somewhere in the movie? Did they need the audience to buy the album?

Still, it sounded ridiculous. There was no way it was true. Little did I know, my investigation was only just beginning.

PHASE 2: Anger

As I took on my journalistic mantle into the unknown, I quickly discovered that the tweet going around talking about an LGBT agenda in Venom was a joke by a gay person.

I started to wonder, was my chain being yanked? Did I play myself, the same way Tom Hardy plays himself in every one of his movies as someone who can't enunciate? That couldn't be the only reason the gays on my timeline were so confused about this movie, right?

I knew I had to keep going. I had to know if I was being gay baited. And soon Verified Twitter offered me the hope I so desperately wanted, dangling on a string.

PHASE 3: Bargaining

Film twitter came through with the answers I was looking for... but were they playing me?"At one point Tom Hardy and Venom make out." wrote Mike Ryan, senior entertainment writer for Uproxx. In a follow up tweet with people asking if the scene he mentioned was real, Ryan wrote, "Yes it is. I’m just not about to spoil the entire scene on twitter. If you want to, have at it man"

This was it, right? This was the answer I was looking for. It had to be real. Someone wouldn't just go on the internet and make a homophobic joke, would they? Mekler's tweet was obviously not serious, but what if it was just a riff on something that really happened? Why would Ryan lie about the scene being real in a follow up tweet he didn't need to make? It was real. It was totally real.

The voice in the back of my head who knew better kept saying in a spooky voice, "Baiting... baiting... baiting..." and soon, I relented. Me was right. My hero's journey wasn't over yet. Even if it must be partially true, I had to know with absolute certainty. I had to see the unbalmed truth with my own eyes.

I had to go deeper.

PHASE 4: Depression

I realized I had to go straight to the source, where there could be no implied falsehoods or gays desperate to believe there really was a monster kiss: the straight bros on reddit. A spoiler summary of what happens in the movie had to give me the last piece of the puzzle I was looking for.

So I dove in, sifted through reddit posts until I found the right one, pressed command + f, typed in "kiss", and the answer was right in front of me. Beware: here there be dragons.

Eddie decided to remove Venom from his body, by activating the MRi scanner. Venom was distrubed by the high frequency wave and separated itself from Eddie. Then, escaped via the vent. Eddie barged out from the hospital and ambushed by Drake's henchmen. Eddie was sedated and being taken away. Venom saw Eddie being abducted by the henchmen from far, but unable to do anything because it didn't have a host. Venom found Anne and fused with her, then proceed to rescue Eddie. Drake met Eddie, again, and he sensed that Eddie lost his symbiote, he asked Eddie about the location of Venom. Drake was able to sense a symbiote because he fused with Riot (Riot flew all the way from Malaysia to United States, hopping from host to host, finally met Drake and decided to cooperate with him to launch a spaceship for his invasion plan). Drake asked his guys to kill Eddie, and he went off to his space station for his launch program. She-Venom arrived the scene and rescued Eddie, kissed him and transfered the symbiote back to Eddie.

Venom reached the space station and fought Riot (the camera work is terrible here, Venom vs. Riot, both dark characters fighting in the night, with shaky camera, imagine that). In the end, Riot was killed by Venom by exploding the spaceship. Venom was supposed to be dead (due to the burning and explosion), but later on we found out that he did not died. The movie ended with Eddie Brock getting along with Anne again, and they (Venom and Eddie) decided on hurting bad guys only, then the convenient store scene in the trailer happened. The End

PHASE 5: Acceptance

When I got what I was looking for, I had to ask myself: was it what I needed? Did I really need to see Tom Hardy make out with a black symbiote alien thing that ate a guy in a supermarket store, or whatever Venom's origin in this movie is supposed to be? Well, yes.

Hollywood and liberals love to make jokes about gay intimacy between two men. It must lustful and wrong, and it has to always end in tragedy. It must involve some evil conspiracy where the two of them plot suffering behind their backs. Look no further then the gay villains in Hitchcock's Rope, the homophobic Trump and Putin jokes, or Lefou and Gaston in Disney's live action cosplay Beauty and the Beast. If both of them aren't evil, then one of them must be brainwashed into the relationship –– like an unwitting civilian and an alien parasite.

There seems to be a misconception in fandom that gays being being played simply as monstrous villains is some kind of profound subverison of the horror of homophobia and experiencing attraction while being closeted. That's why stuff like Hannigram from NBC's Hannibal is so popular, despite it being heavily implied and never becoming text (since Bryan Fuller likes playing with straight guy homoeroticism), like how Hannibal was arguably queer-coded as a villain in the novels –– in theory, Will meets his seeming opposite who he ends up sharing a lot in common with, and the horrors he experiences is actually slowly awakening the love he feels for Hannibal, a gay love, before he finally gives into Hannibal's seductions and becomes a killer, and Will drags Hannibal and himself to fall over a cliff together to their deaths, as their story must end. At least, that's what their fans argue, and cite "moral purist" to dissidents.

But these fans, especially the younger ones, don't seem to understand the damage such a portrayal can do. In the end, it's a good thing that the kiss was a weird hetero thing with She-Venom and we can all forget this 12 hour fervor ever happened. Maybe it's weird on screen, but it could've been much worse.

The Venom kiss would have been bad. It probably would've been hot, but it would've been bad.

And myself and the world are better off without it.

ONTD, is the world ready for the love that Eddie Brock and Venom share?

6 songs about women talking about men

$

Carly Rae Jepsen - Boy Problems
Key advice:If you're gonna stay then stay - he's not gonna change anyway.
In this song Carly unloads her boy problems on her friends until they threaten to hang up on her. This supremely mid-2010s video (That font! That low lit neon aesthetic! Tavi Gevinson!) showcases Carly at her most mullety and in that era, the worse the hair was the better the music was.

Miya Folick - Stop Talking
Key advice:It’s clear to me he's not worth your energy, let's break it down - he’s just not very nice to you
Coming across like the person on the other end of the line in Carly's Boy Problems, Miya is exasperated. She's sick of hearing about this idiot, and worst of all, he's turning her interesting friend into a broken record who can only talk about one thing ("The way you think is so unique, but he's taking all the real estate!").

Destiny's Child - Girl
Key advice:Girl, you don't have to be hiding, don't you be ashamed to say he hurt you
The video remakes Sex and the City to play up the girl talk vibe (recreating the brunch gossip scenes) and lets both viewpoints come to the fore - the well-meaning advice and the girl defending her guy ("It ain't really him, it's stress from the job").

Dua Lipa - New Rules
Key advice:If you're under him, you're not getting over him.
While the song is phrased as the narrator strengthening her resolve not to answer those late night fuckboy texts, the instantly iconique video gives the song a great female friendship vibe.

The Long Blondes - Once and Never Again
Key advice:You're only 19 for god's sake, you don't need a boyfriend.
In the much-missed (by the OP) Sheffield band's jauntiest single the narrator tries to get a younger friend to dump the jerk she's dating, but a double entendre at the end hints she may have a hidden motive ("I know how it feels to be your age... oh how I'd love to feel a girl your age").

Lauryn Hill - Doo Wop (That Thing)
Key advice:Baby girl, respect is just a minimum.
This huge hit had a radiant, pregnant Lauryn Hill dishing out advice to men and women alike, with acid lines like "and you wonder why women hate men?" sweetened by a gorgeous retro-current video and insanely catchy tune.

"Always focus on the front windshield and not the rearview mirror."
- Colin Powell

This year alone, there have been more than 45 million cars produced. It is estimated that there are one billion cars in use in the world today. Cars get us from point A to point B. Most of the time. So what of those instances where people don't reach their destinations? Or when they get there, they now have to burden some kind of secret they picked up along the way.

Here are ten suspenseful films involving car accidents and mishaps. Drive safely.

I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER
1997
Directed by Jim Gillespie

On the cusp of finally leaving their coastal community after high school graduation, four teenagers accidentally run over a man on July 4th. They then make a pact to dispose of the body and never tell the authorities. One year later, someone who knows their secret is out to both expose them and take revenge.

The characters in this somber teen slasher from 1997 made a bad decision. Although they were not punished by the law, they dealt with some heavy consequences. Their dreams of escaping their stagnant hometown were dashed by constant guilt and paranoia. And there was also the matter of a killer wearing a slicker coming after them while brandishing a fisherman's hook.

THE MONSTER
2016
Directed by Bryan Bertino

While delivering their daughter to her father, a mother's car breaks down on a desserted road. As they wait for help, a terrifying creature lurks outside.

If you are a fan of The Babadook, The Monster has some similarities. For one, the relationship between the mother and child is strained at best. The mother is obviously a mess, and it's for the best that her daughter not be under her care anymore. And secondly, there's a supernatural element at play that is raising the drama level. Unfortunately, Monster shares something else with The Babadook: the characters are grating and really off-putting. Even more so. The mother here is in fact written to be so unpleasant that viewers may find it hard to muster sympathy for her or the situation at hand. This creature feature is better made than others and the practical effects make the movie worth at least one watch.

PENNY DREADFUL
2006
Directed by Neil Marshall

To help a patient with a phobia of cars, a therapist drives her to a retreat. Along the way, they have a flat tire after picking up a strange hitcher. The therapist goes for help, leaving the patient alone. Or so she thinks.

The premise and setting for this obscure thriller are both creative, but the execution is admittedly flawed.

DEAD END
2003
Directed by Jean-Baptiste Andrea, Fabrice Canepa

A family's car gets a flat tire on a desserted back road while driving to see relatives on Christmas Eve. As they try to get back on the road, the family experiences a serie of bizarre events.

Ray Wise and Lin Shaye lead the cast in this fun indie horror comedy about a father who breaks a twenty-year routine to take a shortcut. The biggest problem would be the uninspired twist ending.

WRONG TURN
2003
Directed by Mennan Yapo

A man taking a shortcut through the West Virginia woods crashes into the car belonging to a group of stranded people. Together, they look for help, but end up being hunted by cannibals living in the forest.

This slasher doesn't paint West Virginians in a flattering light, but Wrong Turn is a good, bloody time if you're in the mood for some backwoods terror.

DUEL
1971
Directed by Steven Spielberg

A businessman traveling across a California desert is pursued by a malicious driver in a rusty tanker.

There is no accident here that kicks off the story, but road rage is a serious problem nonetheless. Steven Spielberg's debut film was originally a television-made movie, but due to its popularity, more scenes were filmed for a theatrical release. Even today, few if any other car-based thrillers have come close to the quality of Duel.

FENDER BENDER
2016
Directed by Mark Pavia

After having a minor car accident with a stranger, a teenager exchanges insurance information with the other party. At home, she is punished by her parents and left home alone. This is when the other driver from the accident decides to pay her a visit.

Before Chiller went belly up, they aired an original movie that was surprisingly chilling and grim. Fender Bender is part home invasion and part slasher. The ending is bleak.

REEKER
2005
Directed by Dave Payne

A group of friends driving to a desert rave get stranded at a seedy motel after having some car trouble. There, they begin to die as a foul-smelling killer hunts them down one by one.

Reeker stands out among other modern slashers because of its twist ending, which may be excessive for this type of movie.

HIT AND RUN
2009
Directed by Enda McCallion

After a night of drinking, Mary drives home. She hits something, presumably an animal, and continues driving. The next morning, she awakens to find that she did hit something - a man. And now he's impaled on her bumper. Rather than reporting her crime to the cops, Mary buries the body. But her paranoia won't go away - and the victim may not be dead after all.

This torture flick is loosely based on the 2001 murder of Gregory Glen Biggs. There is a slightly better movie, Stuck, inspired by the same case. But that film, starring Mena Suvari, is more of a drama. There is also an Indian movie from 2010 called Accident on Hill Road that is more or less a remake of Stuck. Hit and Run is a trashy splatter film that may satisfy anyone who wants to see some bad people get what they deserve.

THE HILLS HAVE EYES
1977
Directed by Wes Craven

On the way to California, a family's car breaks down in a remote part of the desert. Unfortunately for them, a group of dangerous locals are watching them, waiting to attack.

The popular 2006 movie of the same name is a remake of Wes Craven's 1977 cult classic. While the modern adaptation fits perfectly in the 2000s, the original feels more guerilla.
