ONTD ORIGINAL: Actors who look good dressed in drag

$
0
0
Yesterday I saw kinky boots and I really liked that movie, it's so much fun and also I noticed how hot Chiwetel looked in thigh high boots and makeup, he is one of the most gorgeous men in my opinion but still it surprised me how attracted I am to him in drag so I started to search about more actors who look good in drag and here are the results (have in mind I haven't seen most of these movies , I barely know what they are about so this is purely about looks and based on my taste):

1. Chiwetel Ejiofor - Kinky Boots

Like I described, those red thigh high boots really suit him because he has AMAZING legs (and arms and butt and everything) , also the makeup, he looks pretty good in a dress and how he portrayed Lola, with so much charisma and charm, I was (more) in love, and I like how he sings, I think he had a lot of fun with that role, and let's be real he deserves and Oscar fo 12 years a Slave and this:

Also according to an interview he made some straight male jornalists question their sexuality ,he did THAT (and seriosly watch the movie, it's worth it)

2. Gael García Bernal- La mala Educación

I've never seen an Almodovar movie, they seem too pretentious for me, I HATE spanish accents and if i'm honest I don't like movies that much, but I remember being impressed about how good, hot and pretty Gael looks in drag, the dresses he got to wear were beautiful too, Gael has a pretty face and the makeup and wig just make him more alluring.

3. Cillian Murphy- Breakfast on Pluto

A lot of women already describe Cillian as one of the most beautiful men in the world and even if I find him attractive i don't think he is that hot, but we can't deny how beautiful he looks in drag:

Look those curls, the eyes, the hat, everything to be honest.

4. Harold Perrineau- Romeo and Juliet

I first saw Harold on LOST and all the "WAAAAAAAAAAAAALT" memes were funny but honestly I didn't think much about him as an actor (I blame the writers, they fucked everything up) but when I saw some parts of this weird ass movie I realized 2 things, one the guy is pretty talented and two the guy is pretty, period, not many men can rock that wig and that lingerie like he did and he knows how to dance, also look at that body, damn.

5. Patrick Swayze- To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar

Patrick Swayze played against type on this movie, he portrayed a drag queen who won the award as best NY drag queen, Patrick looks so attractive with that wig, those smizes who would make Tyra proud, the stylish dresses, he didn't come to play, he knew he was beautiful and wanted to show that to the world.

6. Jude Law- Rage

Like with Cillian i find him attractive but meh nomally but I like him on drag , the dark wig makes him look sexy and alluring, the strappless dress, the goth makeup, everything screams sex, he looks HOT.

Honorable mentions:

John Leguizamo and Wesley Snipes - To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar
Liev Schreiber - Mixed Nuts and Taking Woodstock
Miguel Bosé - Tacones Lejanos
Roger Taylor - I want to break free MV ( he isn't an actor but w/e)

______

These are the examples I could think about, I know there are more so tell me about them in the comments and let's discuss about attractive actors in drag !!!

ONTD Original - which 'popular films' of 2018 could be nominated for next year's Oscars?

$
0
0

So now that the above got announced this morning, much to the dismay of non-Marvel stans (you know, regular movie fans), the next question is - which movies are going to fall under the 'popular' films category come Oscars time in January?

The most obvious indicator is box office. So, assuming this category has five nominees like all but two categories (best picture and best makeup), the 'popular film' nominees will be from this set of movies already released in 2018 (only listing those that made over $200M domestically):

1. Black Panther (Disney) - $700,017,849
2. Avengers: Infinity War (Disney) - $678,107,861
3. Incredibles 2 (Disney) - $583,908,997
4. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Universal) $406,146,080
5. Deadpool 2 (Fox) $318,053,195

You can obviously see who has the monopoly here (and maybe Deadpool might be a Disney feature once the merger is set). 'Solo' also made over $200M but let's be real, that's not getting shit.

Other movies considered for the stupid as fuck category are those that were hugely popular and had amazing word of mouth and/or insane critical acclaim, including 'A Quiet Place' and maybe the newest 'Mission: Impossible'.

Beyond this is the future, and fall releases. One can assume that the following are probably going to fall into the 'popular'/successful category as well, and eligible for this useless Oscar.

-- Venon (Sony), October 5
-- The Grinch (Universal), November 9
-- Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (WB), November 16
-- Ralph Breaks the Internet (Disney), November 21
-- Aquaman (WB), December 21
-- Bumblebee (Paramount), December 21
-- Mary Poppins Returns (Disney), December 25

At the end of the day, this award was clearly bought by Disney so 'Black Panther' could win so meh.

ONTD Original: Old Hollywood Liberals

$

1. Lauren Bacall (1924-2014)

• Bacall was a staunch liberal Democrat throughout her life
Was one of about 80 Hollywood celebrities to send a telegram protesting the House Un-American Activities Committee's (HUAC) investigations of Americans suspected of Communism, with the telegram stating that investigating individuals' political beliefs violated the basic principles of American democracy
• Campaigned for Harry Truman in the 1948 presidential election, Adlai Stevenson in the 1952 presidential election, and Robert Kennedy in his 1964 run for the US Senate
Bacall has described herself as "anti-Republican" and said, "being a liberal is the best thing on earth you can be. You are welcoming to everyone when you're a liberal. You do not have a small mind"
• Stayed gorgeous her whole life

2. Humphrey Bogart (1899-1957)

During the 1944 presidential election, Bogart endorsed Franklin Roosevelt, and because his activities were unpopular with the general public the studio told him to stop antagonizing fans who didn't share his political views
• In 1952, after initially supporting the Republican candidate Dwight Eisenhower, Bogart campaigned for the Democratic presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson
Organized a delegation to Washington, DC, called the Committee for the First Amendment, in retaliation to what he believed was the harassment of Hollywood screenwriters and actors by the HUAC
• To counter the negative publicity received from protesting HUAC, Bogart wrote an article called "I'm No Communist" to help distance himself and wife Lauren Bacall from the Hollywood Ten, writing, "The ten men cited for contempt by the House Un-American Activities Committee were not defended by us"

3. Marlon Brando (1924-2004)

• Brando was arrested in a 1964 "fish-in" held to protest a broken treaty that had promised Native Americans fishing rights in Puget Sound
Brando refused to accept his Oscar for his performance in The Godfather at the 1973 Academy Awards; instead, Sacheen Littlefeather stood for him in full Apache attire and stated that Brando would not accept the award due to the "poor treatment of Native Americans in the film industry"
Brando was against the apartheid: in 1964, to prevent his films from being shown to a segregated audience, he favored a boycott of his filmography, and in 1975 he took part in a protest rally against American investments in South Africa and for the release of Nelson Mandela
• Apparently once refused a role in the early 1960s, saying, "How can I act when people are starving in India?"
• In a 1996 interview with Larry King, Brando said, "Hollywood is run by Jews; it is owned by Jews, and they should have a greater sensitivity about the issue of—of people who are suffering. Because they've exploited—we have seen the—we have seen the n*gger and greaseball, we've seen the chink, we've seen the slit-eyed dangerous Jap, we have seen the wily Filipino, we've seen everything, but we never saw the k*ke" but also "Thank God for the Jews" when pressed about being anti-Semitic; King later claimed that Brando's comments were blown out of proportion and taken out of context
• Performed in the Zionist play A Flag is Born in 1946
• When his third wife Tarita Teriipia was asked about making more films, she replied that she would like to but Brando wanted her to "stay home and raise the children"; Brando's daughter with Tarita, Cheyenne, alleges that he wasn't a good father during her childhood and accused him of molesting her
• Aged poorly

4. Henry Fonda (1905-1982)

Although he was once a registered Republican, Fonda was a liberal Democrat for most of his life, and one of the more active Democrats in Hollywood
• Was a founding member of the Hollywood Democratic Committee during the 1930s
• Fonda admired Franklin Roosevelt, and his daughter Jane claims the only time she ever saw her father cry was when Roosevelt died
• Appeared in a campaign commercial for presidential candidate John F. Kennedy in 1960
Fonda once said Ronald Reagan made him "physically ill" and he "couldn't stomach any of the Republicans, most of all Richard Nixon"
• Despite being against the Vietnam War, Fonda was persuaded to go on a 23 day tour, where he took and autographed polaroids with servicemen
Fonda's son Peter wrote in his autobiography that he believes his father's liberalism caused his father to be gray-listed during the early 1950s, when he experienced a 6-year layoff from films
• Although he was very liberal, Fonda still maintained friendships with conservatives like James Stewart and John Wayne (they never talked about politics with each other)
• Despite popular belief, Fonda supported his daughter Jane's left-wing and anti-war activism during the Vietnam War and told critics to "shut up" because "she's perfect" at the AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Henry Fonda in 1978

5. Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003)

Hepburn was the daughter of a doctor and suffragette who encouraged her to speak her mind, develop it fully, and exercise her body to its full potential
• Described herself as a "dedicated Democrat"
• Hepburn did not believe in religion or the afterlife
In the 1940s Hepburn was prompted into political activity after her name was mentioned at the HUAC's hearings as a Communist sympathizer (which she denied), and she joined the Committee for the First Amendment
• Hepburn promoted birth control and supported the right to abortion in her later life

6. Marsha Hunt (1917-)

At age 100, Hunt still considers herself a liberal Democrat and is very concerned with numerous progressive causes, such as supporting same-sex marriage, ending global poverty, and raising awareness for climate change
• Was a very active member of the Hollywood Democratic Committee and The Hollywood Anti-Nazi League
• Hunt and her husband became members of the Committee for the First Amendment in 1947 after becoming disturbed by the actions of the HUAC
Hunt flew to Washington, DC, along with other Hollywood actors, directors, writers, and filmmakers, to protest HUAC's actions, and when she flew back a few days later she was asked to denounce her activities if she wanted to continue working Hunt refused, and in 1950, Hunt was blacklisted after being named a potential Communist or Communist sympathizer in the Red Channels
• Hunt was a founder of the San Fernando Valley Mayor's Fund for the Homeless and raised funds to help create a day care shelter for homeless children called the Rose Cottage
• In 2013, Hunt debuted a clip of a song about love and same-sex marriage called "Here's to All Who Love" that she wrote 40 years prior; the song was sung by Glee star Bill A. Jones and went viral

• During World War II, Kelly enlisted in the Navy and was a sailor
In 1947, he joined the Committee for the First Amendment and flew to Washington, DC, to protest the first official hearings by the HUAC
When Betsy Blair, Kelly's first wife, was suspected of being a Communist sympathizer and the studio United Artists was considering dropping her under pressure from the American Legion, Kelly successfully threatened MGM's influence on United Artists with a pullout from the 1955 film It's Always Fair Weather unless his wife was restored to the part
• Kelly often used his position on the board of directors of the Writers Guild of America to mediate disputes between unions and Hollywood film studios
• Despite being raised Roman Catholic, Kelly severed his ties with the church in 1939 and became an agnostic

8. Burt Lancaster (1913-1994)

• Lancaster was a dedicated supporter of the Democratic Party and he campaigned for several Democratic politicians; Lancaster's films often reflect his liberal political beliefs
Frequently spoke out in support of racial minorities, including at the March on Washington (which he flew home from a movie set in Europe to attend), and was a financial supporter of Martin Luther King, Jr.
• Was a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War
• After George Bush referred to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) as "un-American" during the 1988 presidential election, Lancaster appeared in a television advertisement where he said, "My name is Burt Lancaster and I've a confession to make. I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU"
• Lancaster supported the fight against AIDS in 1985 after Rock Hudson, his close friend, admitted he had AIDS
• Due to his political affiliation, Lancaster lost 2 roles in Cecil B. DeMille's films (DeMille was a conservative Republican)
Lancaster was also nearly blacklisted in the late 1940s due to his liberalism, and the FBI kept a file on his activities
Was one of the 575 people named on Richard Nixon's Enemies List

• Franklin Roosevelt was a big fan of Loy before she became an active Democrat, and she became a personal friend of Eleanor Roosevelt

12. Paul Newman (1925-2008)

• Newman was a lifelong liberal Democrat who supported several Democratic politicians; many of Newman's films reflect his political views
• In 1968, Newman supported anti-war Senator Eugene McCarthy's bid to win the Democratic nomination from incumbent President Lyndon Johnson, and even helped raise McCarthy's campaign $125,000 during his first telethon
Richard Nixon placed Newman on his Enemies List due to his support of McCarthy and his opposition to the Vietnam war; Newman claimed this was his greatest accomplishment
During the 1968 presidential election, Newman found out that a Jaguar he rented on the weekends was being rented to Richard Nixon (also known as "Tricky Dick") so he left a note in it saying, "This clutch is tricky, so you won't have any trouble with it"

Due to his liberal activism, Richard Nixon placed him on his Enemies List
• Peck was an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War, though he remained supportive of his son who fought there
• Called the men who wished to avoid the draft due to their moral convictions against the war "patriots" and "heroes" during the Vietnam War
In 1987, Peck did voice-overs for television commercials opposing Ronald Reagan's Supreme Court nomination Robert Bork, whose nomination ended up being defeated
Was a vocal supporter of a worldwide ban of nuclear weapons and a lifelong gun control advocate; in 1999, Peck publicly criticized Congress for failing to pass gun control legislation following Columbine

• Was active with the Hollywood Democratic Committee and served on its executive board in 1944
• Donated over $250,000 to more than 850 political and charitable organizations involved in war relief, as well as cultural, educational and religious groups; Robinson later found out that 11 of the groups were listed by the FBI as Communist front organizations
Robinson was unable to join the military during World War II due to his age, though he became a Special Representative based in London where he took advantage of his multilingual skills to deliver radio addresses in over six languages to Nazi-occupied countries
• Less than a month after the Invasion of Normandy, Robinson traveled to Normandy to entertain the troops, and in doing so became the first movie star to go there for the USO; after returning to the US, he visited shipyards and defense plants to keep up worker morale, and appeared at rallies to help sell war bonds
Although not a supporter of Communism, Robinson did not criticize the Soviet Union during the War because he saw them as an ally against Hitler, and he appeared at their war relief rallies after the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union to give moral aid to America's new ally, saying they could join "together in their hatred of Hitlerism"
In 1950 and 1952, Robinson was called to testify in front of the HUAC and, although he was cleared of any Communist involvement, his career suffered after he was blacklisted
After World War II ended, Robinson publicly supported the democratic rights for every American and endorsed the Fair Employment Practices Commission's call to end workplace discrimination

15. Gale Sondergaard (1899-1985)

Sondergaard was married to Herbert Biberman who was one of the Hollywood Ten
• Biberman was accused of being a communist by the HUAC; Sondergaard and her husband were effectively blacklisted in 1947

Considered running for the US Senate in 1946, representing his home state of Wisconsin; the seat was won by Joseph McCarthy, who introduced McCarthyism to the US
Welles' political activities were reported in Red Channels, the anti-Communist publication that helped fuel the Hollywood blacklist, and Welles was in Europe during the height of the Red Scare which increased rumors of his alleged Communist sympathies and ties
• Welles narrated a satirical political record on Richard Nixon's administration in The Begatting of the President in 1970
• Criticized racism in the US and the practice of segregation

Honorable Mentions
Unfortunately, I couldn't fit everyone on the list. Some honorable mentions include: Tony Curtis, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Kirk Douglas, Joan Fontaine, Ava Gardner, James Garner, Danny Kaye, Louis Jourdan, Angela Lansbury, Janet Leigh, Ida Lupino, Robert Ryan, Lana Turner, and Shelley Winters.

• Although she mostly answered questions about him civilly, Bette Davis sometimes openly mocked ex-costar Ronald Reagan in several interviews

• While filming The War Wagon (1967), Kirk Douglas recorded a TV spot endorsing the Democratic Governor of California Edmund G. Brown, which enraged costar John Wayne who had recorded an advertisement for Ronald Reagan, the Republican challenger
• During a time when homosexuality was rarely discussed, Judy Garland constantly acknowledged her gay fan base
• James Garner married his wife Lois Clarke 2 weeks after they met at a political rally for 1956 Democratic presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson; the couple remained married until his death in 2014
• John Huston was invited to a White House lunch because First Lady Nancy Reagan's father was Huston's doctor, and after she asked if he thought her husband turned out to be an even better president than everyone had expected, Huston replied, "Worse my dear—far, FAR worse!" Huston was not invited back to the White House during the Reagan administration
• After his father was arrested by the Gestapo during World War II, Louis Jourdan and his brothers joined the French Resistance, where he "worked on illegal leaflets, helping to print and distribute them"
• Some sources allege that Spencer Tracy was an arch-conservative during the 1930s but his views changed after he met Katharine Hepburn while others claim he was always a moderate Democrat; regardless, Tracy believed actors had no place in politics
• Shelley Winters briefly addressed the Selma marchers outside Montgomery on the night before they marched into the state capitol in 1965

ONTD, who is your favorite old Hollywood liberal?

ONTD Original: Tom Holland and the Quackson

$

Have you wondered where the meme came from as it tends to follow tholland? What is a quackson? Is it an onomatopoeia? Is it a sound of a duck? If you thought so, you'd be wrong!

- In one of the most earliest instances, tholland relates a story in an interview about a "croissant"
- According to the meme his fans, the pastry in question sounds like "quackson"

- At the infamous ace con (where notorious tholland fans were rude to mackie and sebstan), a fan asked tholland to say quackson
- Mackie is all of us as he states, "What was the joke?"
- Kevin proceeds to explain the joke is that tholland's accent and pronunciation of "croissant" sounds like "quackson" (to americans lbr)
- Mackie then asks tholland, "Can you say croi-sandwich?"

- In another interview (the video above at 4:50), tholland reveals that he's well aware of the meme
- He recounts that his fans ask him to say the name of the pastry
- Tholland encouraged his fans to leave quackson behind and move on to another meme, which as you can imagine has only added fuel to fire

- Though tholland appears to have embraced the quackson meme, which would add onto previously embraced memes such as the frog meme
- OP wants the breakfast

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The shocking love affair between Indian actors Priyanka Chopra and Shahrukh Khan is an open secret in Bollywood much like the Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha fiasco. No one knows the exact timeline of when the affair started and ended, but people have speculated that it began in 2006 when Khan and Chopra starred in their film "Don" together, and ended in 2012. Before I begin, let me explain why their affair is considered scandalous:

Primer:

Shahrukh Khan is one of the most popular actors in India, and has been frequently referred to as the Baadshah (King) of Bollywood. He has also been married to his wife Gauri since 1991, and they have three children together; Aryan (born in 1997), Suhana (born in 2000), and AbRam (born in 2013). Shahrukh and Gauri, who is an interior designer and producer, are a power couple and were seen as two people who were in a perfect marriage. They projected the image of a devoted and happy family together, and there weren't any credible cheating rumors about him prior to this. Priyanka Chopra was seen as the sexy "it girl" in Bollywood and also had a sultry femme fatale image similar to that of Angelina Jolie. This all contributed to making the affair salacious in the media.

(Shahrukh, Gauri, and their children)

1. Shahrukh flirts with Priyanka at an event for Miss World 2000

This occurred in 2000 and long before their affair began, but one can see Khan's attraction to Chopra as he hypothetically proposed to her.

2. Shahrukh Khan sings "Marry Me" to Priyanka in public

Now, this happened during the affair. Khan sings "Marry Me" to Chopra at an awards show, and you can see how awkward everyone in the audience feels.

3. Priyanka giggles and plays with her hair when an interviewer mentions Shahrukh's name

(Starts at 1:18)

Priyanka sits down for an interview with director Karan Johar on his show "Koffee With Karan", and is joined by her then boyfriend Shahid Kapoor (who she cheated on with Shahrukh). Johar talks about how Priyanka's demeanor changes whenever she hears Shahrukh Khan's name, while Chopra bashfully laughs and starts playing with her hair.

4. Jacketgate

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Priyanka dropped a bombshell last year in an interview on a show called "Dirty Laundry". Chopra talked about keeping a jacket belonging to one of her exes, and guess who was caught once wearing the same clothing? This was seen as a confirmation of the affair.

5. Shahrukh's response to Priyanka and Nick Jonas' engagement

This is what Khan reportedly had to say when asked about Priyanka's engagement to Nick-

"Even I am getting married. I will send you an invite. My card will come to the reception and also, do come for the Mehendi."

He seems to be suggesting that he doesn't believe that they will actually get married.

ONTD Original: 10 Memorable Sexy Moments In Film

$
0
0

Here are ten formative movie moments that still get us hot and bothered (and one dishonorable mention).

THE MOMENT – Michelle Rodriguez and that tank top in The Fast and the Furious
WHY IT STUCK – Not only is this specific scene sexy, but Michelle Rodriguez throughout the whole movie... in a tank top... all grungy and shit... is just... sladksfja. MRod might be is messy as hell, but fuck if Letty doesn't still do it for us. In Furious 7, she actually gets decked out in a dress for once, but who needs that?

THE MOMENT – Sonya Blade (Bridgette Wilson) snapping Kano's neck in Mortal Kombat
WHY IT STUCK – Sonya Blade (with help from Veronica Vaughn) was responsible for our '90s era obsession with Bridgette Wilson. In this scene, she shows fake Australian Kano who's boss, and it's enough to make misandrists everywhere orgasm. Flawless victory.

THE MOMENT – Catherine Zeta-Jones cucking John Cusack in High Fidelity
WHY IT STUCK – We can trace our mean girl kinks all the way back to Charlie emotionally destroying Rob in High Fidelity. Something about an intelligent, gorgeous woman not giving a single fuck about a man’s feelings set us on fire. Please step on our necks, Catherine Zeta-Jones.

THE MOMENT– Every second of Corey (Liv Tyler) in Empire Records
WHY IT STUCK – ‘90s babes are in a class of their own and Liv Tyler is their queen. In Empire Records, she was the prototype: midriff-baring sweater, plaid skirt, black combat boots, and angst that could only be sated by destroying everything in its path. She was a crush for the ages.

THE MOMENT – Cleo (Queen Latifah) kissing and caressing her girlfriend’s legs in Set It Off
WHY IT STUCK The image of Cleo luxuriating on the hood of a car with her sexy girlfriend has been seared into our brains for years. When we first snuck into our living rooms late at night to watch HBO, we didn’t expect to stumble upon the single most aspirational moment in cinematic history: fishnets, cigarettes, cars, money, lesbian intimacy. Set It Off delivered big time; we haven’t been the same since.

THE MOMENT – Haley's (Missy Peregrym) ice bath in Stick It
WHY IT STUCK – Okay, now when someone says “gay awakening” this is the exact scene and movie that pop into our heads. The movie started out with us saying “wow, I want to be just like her” and then this scene happened and we said, “wow I want to marry her.” So yeah, this scene has stuck with us. Are you really a lesbian if you don’t love this movie?

THE MOMENT – Needy (Amanda Seyfried) and Jennifer (Megan Fox) making out in Jennifer's Body
WHY IT STUCK– If Stick It was our gay awakening, then Jennifer's Body was our "Yep, not a fluke" moment. It had the benefit of introducing us to Amanda Seyfried's glow up and turning us into Megan Fox's biggest stans. Jennifer's Body was a love story between Jennifer and Needy, and don't try to tell us otherwise.

THE MOMENT Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace) getting some in The Girl Who Played With Fire
WHY IT STUCK – Lisbeth Salander is unquestionably one of the most kickass characters ever. We don't know if we want to be her or fuck her, and that dilemma has never been as hard to decide as when she fucked an old flame on some hardwood floors. For a few of us, the spontaneous sex exposed a previously unknown desire. That's the definition of life-changing.

THE MOMENT– Anne Marie (Kate Bosworth) riding on Eden's (Michelle Rodriguez) jetski in Blue Crush
WHY IT STUCK Blue Crush is one hour and fifty minutes of concentrated badass. Eden towing Anne Marie out to monster waves as "Youth of the Nation" plays takes us back to the moment when we first saw these hardcore surfer babes ripping on the big screen. They stole our hearts then and we're still wetter than the ocean whenever we think of this early '00s classic.

THE MOMENT – Zoe Saldana (Kat) and Mila Kunis (Nikki) talking about the taste of pussy in After Sex
WHY IT STUCK – Do we really need to spell it out for you? Just watch the clip. Better yet, watch the whole thing.

THE MOMENT – Adele (Adèle Exarchopoulos) stuffing her beautiful face in Blue Is The Warmest Color
WHY IT STUCK (WITH ONE OF US) Blue Is The Warmest Color. You probably expected one of the gratuitous sex scenes when you saw the name. But nah, that’s not what sticks in our mind. What’s hotter than a sloppy babe slurping spaghetti and mussels into her always open mouth? Feast your eyes on that and try not to get too hot in public.

ONTD Original: Bollywood Scandal - Akshay Kumar And His Philandering Ways

This is a follow up to the Priyanka and Shahrukh affair post.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

(Akshay with Priyanka Chopra)

Indian actor Akshay Kumar is a well known cheating womanizer, the embodiment of "men are trash", and the provider of some of the messiest scandals in Bollywood. Khiladi (player) Kumar is one of those men who just can't seem to keep it in his pants, and here is a look at some of his relationships and affairs:

1. Akshay and Pooja Batra

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Akshay dated successful model Pooja Batra before he became an actor, which would put this relationship sometime before 1991. Some say that he took advantage of Batra for networking purposes to get into Bollywood. He would often accompany her to parties attended by people working in the industry and get connections to them in order to help him pursue a career in acting. Once Kumar was able to break into Bollywood in 1991, he dumped Batra.

2. Akshay and Ayesha Jhulka

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Akshay's next girlfriend was his Khiladi (1992) co-star Ayesha Jhulka. After Khiladi became a hit, Kumar and Jhulka's careers began to boom and their relationship was in every headline. Supposedly, the broke up after Jhulka wanted to get married and Kumar was not ready to settle down yet.

3. Akshay and Raveena Tandon

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Here is where things start getting more salacious and juicy, and this is one of Akshay's most high profile and serious relationships. Raveena Tandon was one of the leading ladies of the 90's, and Kumar began dating her during the filming of their film Mohra in 1994. Their chemistry in the film was tangible and the two of them gave one of the most memorable rain songs in Bollywood cinema; Tip Tip Barsa Pani:

Their pairing proved to be popular as they went on to star in nine more films together. In the span of all this, Tandon and Kumar's relationship was often gossiped about in the media. Tandon was madly in love with him, but it seemed that Akshay's eyes were wandering else where:

4. Akshay and Rekha

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

During the filming of Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi (1996), Kumar had allegedly cheated on Tandon with his co-star and veteran actress Rekha. The rumors were fueled even further with this sensuous song of the two of them from this film:

Raveena was angry, but believed that it was all just one sided on Rekha's part and that Kumar did not reciprocate her feelings. After Rekha would go to Kumar's home to get lunch dabbas, Tandon felt uncomfortable with their interactions and reportedly told Kumar to stop seeing her.

Now back to his relationship with Raveena Tandon

Raveena wanted to settle down with Akshay, and in an interview with Stardust magazine in 1999, she disclosed that Kumar promised to marry her after he finished shooting for one of his films. Tandon says that Kumar was hesitant to marry her in fear of alienating his female fan base, but she reveals that they did, however, get secretly engaged in a temple. She then dropped a bombshell when she divulged that Kumar was cheating on her, and was also simultaneously engaged to two other women at the time. It is speculated that the other two women were Shilpa Shetty and Twinkle Khanna.

5. Akshay and Shilpa Shetty

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Shilpa Shetty was also a leading lady in the 90's, and one of the two other women that Raveena says that Akshay was engaged to at the same time as her. Raveena allegedly ended her relationship with Akshay after she walked in on him having sex with Shilpa in a pool. Shetty and Kumar starred in a few films together, including Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994) and Dhadkan (2000).

In 2000, Shilpa criticized Kumar in an interview and accused him of using her and taking her for a ride. She also said that she has no malice towards Twinkle, and that Akshay was solely to blame for cheating on her.

6. Akshay and Twinkle Khanna

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Twinkle Khanna is the daughter of two famous Indian actors. Her father was the late Rajesh Khanna and her mother is Dimple Kapadia. Twinkle also had a brief stint as an actress in the late 90's and early 00's, and starred with Kumar in International Khiladi (1999) and Zulmi (1999). Khanna was one of the three women that Kumar was engaged to simultaneously, and his relationship with Shilpa Shetty ended after she found out about Twinkle.

Khanna ended her acting career in 2001, and married Kumar that same year. They have two children together; Aarav (born in 2002) and Nitara (born in 2012).

7. Akshay and Priyanka Chopra

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

In 2003, Akshay starred with Miss World 2000 Priyanka Chopra in a film called Andaaz. Many noted their sexual chemistry in the film, especially in this song:

Well, that ended up being no coincidence because Kumar was cheating on his wife Twinkle with Chopra during the filming of that movie. The two would star in more films together such as Aitraaz (2004), Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004), and Waqt: The Race Against Time (2005). Twinkle was well aware of the affair and told her husband to stop working with Priyanka. He obliged, stopped the affair at around 2005, and still has not to this day worked or spoken with Chopra again.

Akshay and Katrina Kaif

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Another woman that Akshay has cheated on his wife Twinkle with is actress Katrina Kaif. He stopped working with Kaif for in 2010 for seven years after rumors of their affair began circulating further and further. He did, however, reunite with Kaif in 2017 for a selfie.

He still cheats on Twinkle to this day and with multiple women throughout the years. Khanna is fully aware of all of Kumar's affairs, but looks the other way.

ONTD Original: Progressive Old Hollywood Movies

$
0
0
Inspired by the recent post about Old Hollywood liberals, I present to you a post about Old Hollywood movies that were actually progressive back in the day and are still shocking now, many decades later. It’s easy to think of old movies as racist and sexist because, well, many of them are, but as we’ve learned, quite a few people in Hollywood were liberals and progressives and sometimes this showed in their work.

Disclaimer:
+ I’m not saying all of these movies are 100% woke. Just that they tackle at least one socially or politically progressive topic that wasn’t just controversial at the time but still is today.
+ Most of these movies were made while the Hays Code was in place which censored immoral~ content. If you need a quick historical primer, Vox has a good video on the topic. It just makes these movies all the more impressive for somehow making it past the censors.

| 1

dir. by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, starring Sidney Poitier (in his commercial film debut), Richard Widmark, Linda Darnell, Stephen McNally, Mildred Joanne Smith (in her film debut), Ossie Davis (in his film debut), Ruby Dee

Why it’s progressive: Because this was one of the first Hollywood movies to actually address and condemn racism. Like, this film was so groundbreaking and unrestrained that it was feared that it would incite race riots. It was never shown in the South.

Plot: Dr. Luther Brooks (Sidney Poitier) is a black doctor in a white hospital. When two criminal brothers who also happen to be racists get delivered to the prison station, he still has to treat them. One of them dies under his care and the surviving brother, Ray Biddle (Richard Widmark), blames Dr. Brooks for no reason other than dun dun dun he’s a racist. Dr. Brooks wants to prove his innocence but the hospital doesn’t take his concerns seriously, leading to an escalating chain of events.

“Ain't that asking a lot for us to be better than them when we get killed just trying to prove we're as good?”

Why it’s still relevant: The film doesn’t deal with institutional/systemic racism (although there are allusions to it) but it’s still relevant for its intersectional approach to racism and class. If this film were released today, you can just imagine how the NYT would write a think piece about the economic~ anxiety~ of the poor white folk at the center of it but the movie calls that out for the nonsense it is. It shows that there is a way out of learned prejudice but that there’s no way out of irrational hate.(I have to add one caveat about the movie though: The main villain uses every racist epithet in the book. While it does make the movie quite visceral and shocking, there’s a debate to be had about whether that sort of language is necessary to that degree and it was in fact something the NNPA objected to.)

| 2

dir. by Ernst Lubitsch, starring Gary Cooper, Miriam Hopkins, Fredric March, Edward Everett Horton

Why it’s progressive: Because it’s pro-polygamy. Forget the tragic negativity of basically every film made ever since that features a love triangle / ménage à trois / whatever you want to call it.

Plot: It’s about three Americans in Paris. Gilda (Miriam Hopkins) meets best friends Tom (Fredric March), a playwright, and George (Gary Cooper), a painter. She falls in love with both of them. They make a “gentlemen’s agreement” where she can be in a relationship with both of them so long as sex is off the table. (And yes, they actually say this point-blank in the movie.) Naturally, jealousy ensues but they’re determined to make it work.

"It's hard to believe I– I loved you both."

Why it’s still relevant: The film was pre-code but it was made on the brink of the enforcement of the code and had some problems getting cleared for release. Just one year later, under the new strict rules, it couldn’t get a certificate for re-release. While the positive outlook this film has on a bohemian~ life style may come across as naïve, it was pretty daring at the time. Actually, the fact that it’s so judgement-free makes it still progressive today. And while the bisexuality of Tom and George that was implied in the play by Noël Coward that the film is (very loosely) based on isn’t hinted at in the movie, it doesn’t seem completely straightwashed either. Case in point: The above quote that’s said by George to Gilda and Tom. Even though it’s meant to come across as platonic, the domestic friendship of George and Tom is definitely pretty unusual as far as on-screen male friendships are concerned and it takes little imagination to supply the erased subtext. The portrayal of Gilda is also progressive and par for the course where pre-code films and their portrayal of liberated women are concerned.

| 3

dir. by Rouben Mamoulian, starring Fredric March, Anna Sten... also, Preston Sturges is one of the credited writers (?!)

Why it’s progressive: Because it’s socialist af. I can’t stress enough how completely unusual this is for a major Hollywood production, let alone one made in the 1930s. Sure, this was made after the First Red Scare and before the Second Red Scare, so there seems to have been a tiny window of opportunity for a film like this, but it’s not like Hollywood ever embraced socialist politics, like, ever. And yet this film somehow exists and while it’s obscure today, it was made by the best crew money could buy at the time (especially noteworthy is the cinematography by the legendary Gregg Toland who’s known for his work on Citizen Kane).

Plot: This film is an adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s last novel Resurrection (1899). It’s about the young nobleman Prince Dmitri Ivanovich Nekhlyudov (Fredric March) who initially champions socialist ideals but gets corrupted during his time in the military. While he’s home on leave, he sleeps with the servant girl Katusha (Anna Sten) who’s been in love with him since forever. He immediately abandons her afterwards, unaware that he has gotten her pregnant. Years later, he meets her again while he’s on jury duty and she is accused of murdering one of her clients, having become destitute and forced into prostitution. Dmitri has to come to terms with the fact that he’s a terrible person and has ruined her life. He must also try to redeem himself by doing everything he can to save her.She calls him out on the selfishness of his attempts to help her because they’re more about his conscience than about her. It’s great. And it gets better. Due to a legal error, the jury actually accidentally sentences Katusha to years of prison labor in Siberia. When Dmitri realizes that he can’t do anything to stop it, he breaks off his engagement to the rich daughter of the judge who presided over the case, gives away all of his lands to his peasants, and joins Katusha for years of prison labor in Siberia. When will your faves? Apparently Hollywood changed the ending from the book but if that’s Hollywood’s idea of a happy ending then idek. They clearly wanted to make it more romantic but it’s not a love story and the film doesn’t even play it as one which just gives more weight to the socialist motivations of Dmitri’s actions of atonement.

"We’re all shells. We’re mannequins. We’re destined for a short life and a bad end. We’re gluttonous and surfeited while all about us millions go hungry."

Why it’s still relevant: In a time where shows like Downton Abbey romanticize the idea of master-servant relationships, this film is the perfect antidote. The moral message of the movie seems to lie somewhere between men are the worst and capitalism is the worst. There’s also some the justice system is the worst and the military is the worst thrown in for good measure. This film is not a socialist film in the vein of Salt of the Earth (which was made by blacklisted members of Hollywood in 1954 and depicted a union strike in New Mexico in a neorealist (and feminist!) way) but unlike Salt of the Earth, this film was actually made by and endorsed by Hollywood. Samuel Goldwyn had intended the film as a star vehicle for the Russian actress Anna Sten who he hoped would be the next Greta Garbo. The film was a flop and some scenes seem to have landed on the cutting room floor but it’s better than the pallid adaptation of Anna Karenina that was made one year later and actually starred Greta Garbo. Also, hilariously enough, Joseph Breen from the Hays office actually loved this film because I guess he was excited by seeing people suffer for having illicit~ sex~ and missed that it was all about issues of class struggle and toxic masculinity.

| 4

dir. by Gregory La Cava, starring Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Andrea Leeds, Eve Arden, Lucille Ball, Ann Miller

Why it’s progressive: Because it’s about female friendship and female solidarity. It’s about women who want successful careers instead of obligatory marriages. It also subtly calls out the sexist nature of showbusiness and critically alludes to the “casting couch” phenomenon and how women are subjected to predatory men in Hollywood. (There’s a great Jezebel article that goes into detail about this.)

Plot: The film is about the “Footlight’s Club” – a fictional version of clubs that were common at the time in Hollywood and provided boarding houses for young single women looking to make a living as actresses or dancers; and, as the movie shows, these women were often very vulnerable and exploitable but at the same time witty and assertive (much of the dialogue was ad-libbed). It would be impossible to try and detangle the plot lines of all these women here but let’s just say that the movie starts out with newcomer Terry Randall (Katharine Hepburn) moving in and becoming the roommate of Jean Maitland (Ginger Rogers). At first they clash, not least of all because Terry comes from money and is awfully naïve about what it means to be a struggling actress. But in between courting and/or fending off a predatory producer (Adolphe Menjou) and dealing with the ups and downs of trying to kickstart a career, they start to become friends.

"I don't want to be molded. I believe in acting with my brain."

Why it’s still relevant: What’s the last Hollywood movie you can remember that features an almost all-female cast? ... one that was not a blatant mediocre cash grab? That was actually interested in all of its distinct female characters who were allowed to be both sympathetic and unsympathetic? Where even the thought of applying the Bechdel test is laughable because women talking to each other about all kinds of stuff is all that the movie is about? Add to that that the movie quite clearly navigates #metootype of sexual harassment stories, even if it has to do so in a somewhat roundabout way due to the Production Code, and this film just leaps across the decades. (Old Hollywood actually did a bunch of almost all-female movies, e.g. The Women (1939) and Caged (1950) and I’ve heard lots of good things about them but I haven’t seen them personally yet.)

| 5

dir. by Stanley Kramer, starring Spencer Tracy, Fredric March, Gene Kelly

Why it’s progressive: Because it champions the ideals of enlightenment and is not afraid to speak out against bigotry and anti-intellectualism. Also, Stanley Kramer put his money where his mouth was and, in this case (as well as for The Defiant Ones), hired a blacklisted writer to work on the script.

Plot: It’s a fictionalized account of the Scopes Monkey Trial from the 1920s. Essentially, it’s a courtroom drama about a school teacher (Dick York) who wants to teach the theory of evolution alongside creationism and is taken to task for it by Christian zealots. The publicity of the case gains him a prominent defense lawyer (Spencer Tracy) but also a prominent prosecutor (Fredric March) and soon the courtroom becomes a battleground for larger issues of faith, reason and narrowmindedness.

"Soon, your Honour, with banners flying and with drums beating, we’ll be marching backward. Backward!"

Why it’s still relevant: Okay, first of all you need to see this movie to see Gene Kelly sass everyone around him as he plays an H. L. Mencken-type of irreverent reporter. Second of all, everything this movie says about religion, fanaticism, atheism, the press and the process of democracy is as timely as ever. In fact, I doubt that a movie addressing these questions as frankly as this movie does could even get made today. This film is the epitome of no fucks given.

Honorable mentions: The Defiant Ones; The Best Years of Our Lives; The Hunchback of Notre Dame; Salt of the Earth; Dance, Girl, Dance; Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

(+ some directors to check out: Otto Preminger, Stanley Kramer, Frank Capra, Ernst Lubitsch, Dorothy Arzner)

We are almost at the end of the year, but we have already enjoyed and/or hated lots and lots of comebacks. A few surprises, disappointments, iconic releases, record-breaking songs and videos and some nice bops to add to your workout playlist. This is an incredibly biased, incomplete and tbh i'm only doing it because i'm waiting for exo to comeback and save kpop MY list of the best releases so far.

*list sorted by release date ;)*

1. MOMOLAND - 'BBoom BBoom' - GREAT!

Momoland's third EP "GREAT!", with title bop "BBoom BBoom", gave the girls their first win at a music show, which caused accusations of sajaegi (chart manipulation) to arise from knetz. Momoland was cleared and the success continued when the video reached over 100 million views on Youtube (quite impressive milestone for a non-Big 3 group). They tried to recreate the success with "Baam" but failed :(
The mini is quite meh, but "BBoom BBoom" is worthy enough.

Release date: January 3.
Other bops worth mentioning: "Same Same" and "BBoom BBoom - Instrumental Version" lmao.

2. JONGHYUN - '빛이 나 (Shinin’)' - Poet | Artist.

Jonghyun's second album "Poet | Artist" truly showed what an incredible and versatile artist we lost. An amazing album from the first to last track. His gift for his fans. It debuted at No. 177 on Billboard 200. All profits were donated to charity and to his family. You did well, Jjong.

Release date: January 22.
Other bops worth mentioning: "Take the Dive" and '우린 봄이 오기 전에 (Before Our Spring)'.

3. iKON - ‘사랑을 했다(LOVE SCENARIO)’ - Return.

After flopping with "Bling Bling" and "B-day", iKON came back with the song of the year and a quite solid album. The song was a hit in Korea, to the point were it was banned in junior schools because the kids would not stop singing it. Now, let's pretend they didn't release anything else this year!

Release date: January 25.
Other bops worth mentioning: "Sinosijak" and "Just go".

4. Red Velvet - 'Bad Boy' - The Perfect Red Velvet.

Great aesthetics. Great songs. Red Velvet delivered quality once again with this "velvet" release. They even got to sing "Bad Boy" in North Korea in a clearly non-staged, not awkward event between the two nations. The version in English is out now in Red Velvet's latest release "Summer Magic".

Release date: January 29.
Other bops worth mentioning: "Look", "Kingdom Come" and "Perfect 10".

5. PENTAGON - 'Shine(빛나리)' - Positive.

Cube's boygroup finally found some success with their sixth EP "Positive" and title song "Shine". It's the group's first song to enter Melon's Top 100 Real-Time Chart and the popularity abroad increased due to the catchy lyrics and dance moves. Pentagon's future seems unclear at the moment (due to E'dawn's "scandal" -> ONTD post here), but at least they reached some kind of recognition before posssibly being ruined by Cube's poor management.

Release date: April 2.
Other bops worth mentioning: "Do it for fun" and "Let's go together".

6. EXO-CBX - '花요일 (Blooming Day)' - Blooming Days.

This is probably the best album released this year, it's a masterpiece, i love it.
EXO's first sub-unit is back! Despite coming back around the same time as digimonsters TWICE, they did quite well on the charts debuting at number 5 on Melon and even receiving a Planitium Certification from Gaon (only subunit to achieve this so far). Then they released their first full Japanese Album "Magic!" and went on to have a very succesful arena tour in Japan.

Release date: April 10.
Other bops worth mentioning: the whole mini don't lie to yourself"Vroom Vroom" and "휴일 (Lazy)".

7. VIXX - '향 (Scentist)' - Eau de VIXX.

Kings of concepts came back with their third album "Eau de VIXX" and proved to be one of the most versatile boy groups still out there. Also here's the video of them performing "Havana" at Music Bank in Chile. Enjoy.

Release date: April 17.
Other bops worth mentioning: "Silence", "Escape" and "Trigger.

8. BOL4 (볼빨간사춘기) - 'Travel(여행)' - Red Diary Page 2.

These girls could make a song out of the phone book and it would be the cutest, sweetest song ever written. Ji young's voice is just so beautiful. I love everything. Aesthetics on point.

Release date: May 24.
Other bops worth mentioning: "Wind" and "Starlight".

9. SHINee - 'I Want You' - The Story of Light.

SHINee's first release after Jonghyun's death is a combination of various sounds and different vibes, but still remains on brand with the boygroup's sound and aesthetics. The members participated in the writing of "Our Page" as a message for Jonghyun and the fans. The three EPs topped iTunes charts all over the world.

Release date: From May 28 to June 25.
Other bops worth mentioning: All the other title tracks + "All Day All Night", "안녕 You & I", "Chemistry" and "Tonight".

10. SEVENTEEN - '어쩌나 (Oh My!)' - You Make My Day

Seventeen's latest mini album leaves behind the EDM and angst from the previous releases and goes back to the fun and catchy SVT we all love and enjoy. Kings of synchronization deliver a solid album right before their new world tour "Ideal Cut" (which apparently is an "Asia Only World Tour" smh).

Release date: July 16.
Other bops worth mentioning:"Holiday", "What's Good" and "MOONWALKER".

BONUS! - The ones that didn't make it to the list:

> Suzy - "Faces of Love" : cute, but forgettable.
> GOT7 - "Eyes on You": a step in the right direction, still not quite convinced.
> WINNER - "Everyday": no comment.
> Monsta X - "Jealousy": The previous mini was better tbh.
> Twice - "What is Love?": cute, but not their best (which is "Likey" or "TT" lbr).
> BTS - "Fake Love": broke a bunch of records, mediocre at best :/
> Super Junior - "Replay": "Lo Siento" deserved a mention. Thank you, Leslie!
> BLACKPINK - "Square Up": Finally they get a mini and it's not good, sounds dated. "DDU-DU DDU-DU" is catchy enough.

> Red Velvet - "Summer Magic": "Red Flavor"> "Power Up". "Mosquito" is good tho.

ONTD Original: Group members who quit and left their band

$

Tale as old as time, true as it can be, barely even friends, then somebody quits - unexpectedly.♪ Every group eventually disbands and more often than not one member just seems to leave early on in the groups career that simply ruins it for the rest of them and causes heartbreak amongst the fanbase. Now you remember exactly where you were when you heard the news, ripping posters off the wall in your room and sobbing uncontrollably that someone has left your favorite group - uncertain of the groups future. “How could they!?” you shout, sobbing into your favorite group's pillow and merch. Nothing can console you, in some extreme cases you stay in from school or call into work to take a personal day off to mourn. I'm aware there are several groups that could and should be mentioned but I don't have the time to list every single group so feel free to share yours that are missing! A post that for some is still too soon, so let's begin...

Zayn's Official Statement:“My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I'd like to apologize to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world.”

One Direction's Official Statement: “We're really sad to see Zayn go, but we totally
respect his decision and send him all our love for the future. The past five years have been beyond amazing, we've gone through so much together, so we will always be friends. The four of us will now continue. We're looking forward to recording the new album and seeing all the fans on the next stage of the world tour.”

Apologizing to their fans “for having to go through all of this,'' they said: ''The Spice Girls are here to stay. See you at the stadiums!”

“There will be another album and everything else,” Mr. Edwards said.

ONTD's Hysterical rating:😭 😭 😭

Groups Official Statement:“Earlier this year, after much soul searching, Kevin Richardson came to us and told us that he had decided to leave the group and pursue other interests. He gave his blessing to continue the music without him. We have no intention of replacing Kevin, and the door will always be open for him to return to the Backstreet Boys. We wish him the all the best in his future endeavors. This weekend we are returning to the studio to begin the follow-up to Never Gone, and will see you later this year with a new album. -Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and AJ McLean”

Kevin's Official MySpace Statement:“Hey everybody, sorry it has been so long since I've updated you. I've been very busy. I know there are a lot of rumors floating around about my status with BSB. After thirteen years of what can only be described as a dream come true, I have decided to leave the Backstreet Boys. It was a very tough decision for me but one that was necessary in order for me to move on with the next chapter of my life. Howard, Brian, Alex, and Nick will always be my little brothers and will continue to have my utmost love and support. I want to thank you all for the beautiful memories we have shared together and look forward to including you in the next phase of my life. I wish my brothers continued success and look forward to their new album. Peace and love, Kevin Richardson”

Kevin would later officially rejoin the group on April 29th 2012.

Groups Somewhat Official Statement in 2018
Joey Fatone:
“We thought we were getting back together. It was, 'OK, after [Justin] does his thing, blah, blah, blah, we’ll get back together and move forward and do what we got to do. And then it was like, nope. The record company wanted to push Justin, I guess, is what it was. He got bigger and bigger, which is honestly great for him and I’m totally happy for him in that sense, but it was more or less weird that there wasn’t an explanation to say we’re not going to do it, period. I was a little bit on hold for a moment and it was like, ‘OK, we got to shit or get off the pot.’”

Lance Bass:“It took us a while to naturally say, 'You know what? I think ... we might be done. And that’s how it was. It wasn’t anything crazy - no big, crazy fight to break us up. We’re all still close and we talk daily, but I guess it just had run its time, which was sad because I was really excited for the next album.”

Justin Timberlake's Statement in 2017:“We were on a stadium tour, and I just felt like the whole thing was too big. It started as a fun snowball fight that was becoming an avalanche. And, also, I was growing out of it. I felt like I cared more about the music than some of the other people in the group. And I felt like I had other music I wanted to make and that I needed to follow my heart.”

ONTD Original: A sneak peek into MCU's Phase 4!

$
0
0

So, we don't know shit about Phase 4, but we kinda know what's gonna happen and what won't...

CONFIRMED:

- "Spiderman: Far From Home": We know a sequel to homecoming is filming right now in London and it has Mysterio as one of the big baddies. Also, Nick Fury and Maria Hill will also reprise their roles.
- "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3": It was in pre-production but it could be delayed since James Gunn was fired from the project, and Dave Bautista could be on his way out of the MCU as well.

ALMOST A DONE DEAL:

- "Black Widow": We know they're writing a script and they're already looking for female directors.
- "Doctor Strange 2": It was a success and Batidora Cocainomana sells, so we're pretty sure he'll be back. Also, we've been told Doctor Strange plays a major role in future Marvel films, probably introducing the Illuminati into the MCU.
- "Black Panther 2": It was a massive hit. It's pretty much granted he'll be back and so will Ryan Coogler.
- "Deadpool & The X-Force": Disney deal is upon us and if there's one property they won't reboot is character-driven Deadpool. Also, Ryan Reynolds has said that he won't do a Deadpool 3, but a Deadpool & X-Force kind of thing. Deadpool 2 already gave us a first look before they all died. Expect Domino, Cable, Colossus, Dopinder and Negasonic TW to come back.
- "The Mighty Thor": Unlike RDJ and Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth is quite excited about how Ragnarok revitalized Thor as a character and with the impending abscence of the founding members of the MCU, Hemsworth could be looking at this like a chance to lead The Avengers during Phase 4.
- "The Fantastic Four": The whole reason the FOX merger happened was because Marvel has been quite vocal about them wanting to bring Silver Surfer and Galactus into the MCU. Since the 2015 reboot was shit, we can expect a whole new reboot.
- "The Uncanny Xmen": Since Inhumans flopped and the Xmen are such an integral part of the Marvel Universe, is not a matter of if, but when will they reboot the Xmen. Also, bye New Mutants and Dark Phoenix.

RUMOURED:

- "Warlock": Since we saw him in an after credit scene of GOTG vol. 2, we know Warlock's gonna appear in the MCU. Marvel has also said, they won't include him in a Guardians movie, but a solo one.
- "Nova": Since the introduction of the Nova Corps, people have been waiting for Nova to appear and Phase 4 might be when.
- "Spiderman Dimensions": Sony has been trying to build their extended Spidey universe, and while they're taking a chance with Venom, they could use another Spiderman movie to introduce all kind of spideys to spin-off later.
- "The Eternals": To keep their cosmic universe going, The Eternals will play a big role into the MCU expansion. And reports came not that long ago about an Eternals movie seeking for writers.
- "Blade": Kevin Feige has also teased that they could be doing something with Blade in the future. CAST JOHN BOYEGA PLS THNX.
- "Namor, The Submariner": Idk, Marvel's answer to Aquaman?
- "Moon Knight": It's all been rumours, Netflix mentioned having plans for more characters if the Defenders worked out, but it flopped...
- "She-Hulk": It's been rumoured but a long shot since Universal has the rights, they could still fit her in other MCU movies, same as Ruffalo's Hulk.
- "Avengers: Secret Invasion": We know the Skrulls are gonna play a big part in future movies, and that only means one thing... SECRET INVASION (in which half the MCU was actually replaced by Skrulls, so popular heroes we may have grown to love could actually be Skrulls.)

A LONG SHOT:

- "Ant-Man 3/ Wasp 2": While great characters, they haven't been that financially successful. Don't expect any more movies from them, but do expect to see them be part of other Marvel movies, just not leading solo ones.
- "Ms. Marvel": With the inclusion of Captain Marvel, seems like a long shot that we'll get a Ms. Marvel film, if anything she could be appearing in Captain Marvel 2.
- "Inhumans": LMAO. This shit is dead and noone is touching it. #JusticeForLockjaw

- "Captain America: Reborn": Much has been said about Bucky or Sam taking over as Cap, but Marvel has many characters to play now so they won't risk the backlash.
- "IronMan 4": RDJ is done. If anything, he'll do more cameos in movies, but that's about it.
- "Howard the Duck": Why?
- "Avengers v.s. Justice League": Since JL flopped there have been rumours about WB pulling a Sony and lending the rights for DC characters for a Marvel v.s. DC movie, since that crossover did happened in the comics. LBR tho, WB is not that desperate.

ONTD Original: Casting Disney's live action adaptation of 'The Little Mermaid'

$

Disney is currently working on adapting their beloved 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid. With Lin Manuel Miranda on board (my guess is he voices Sebastian) and working on new music with Alan Menken, the adaptation is well underway on the creative end. Additionally, Disney was looking to hire Rob Marshall to direct the adaptation. With music, lyrics, and (probably) directing already lined up, all that's left is casting. Since Lindsay Lohan reminded everyone that this was even happening, I offer some believable casting choices based on the following criteria:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Ariel, the Little Mermaid in question, is most famous for:
• signature bright red hair
• Jodi Benson-appointed singing voice

Ariel is also a self-proclaimed "sixteen years old and not a child" (even though she is most definitely a child).

*In general with casting adaptations I don't believe hair color is that big a deal, but in this case it's an almost essential part of the character. So whoever is cast, if not already a redhead, will certainly have to dye her hair or wear a wig that is hopefully convincing.

This list is presented in age-order.

Age-Appropriate and Already a Redhead

Sadie Sink, 16
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Hair? Yes. Ms. Sink is a natural redhead and has blue eyes, just like Ariel.

Can she sing? Yes. Ms. Sink starred as the titular character in Annie on Broadway in 2013. There aren't any very clear recent examples of her singing solo, but here she is dueting with Stranger Things co-star Millie Bobby Brown:

Just because she's 16, should Ariel also be that young in the movie? Honestly, no. If Disney keeps Ariel as 16, then the three days rule and subsequent marriage remains nagl. I think Disney will age her just a bit, but still keep her "little," i.e. young.

Sophia Lillis, 16
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Hair? Yes. Even though Ms. Lillis is surprisingly not a natural redhead, literally no one would guess she wasn't. Like Ms. Sink, she also has blue eyes, so matches up with the cartoon-Ariel perfectly.

Can she sing? No idea. But she's a talented kid, so maybe!

Just because she's 16, should Ariel also be that young in the movie? See above. But no, she shouldn't.

Age-Appropriate, but Red Hair Needed
Auli'i Cravalho, 17
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Hair? Red hair needed, but honestly she's so fabulous that they should leave her hair alone. She's Moana of fucking Motunui. She doesn't need the red hair because she's already an icon.

Can she sing? YES, A THOUSAND TIMES YES! The very best Disney Princess™ of the new millennium, I am sure you've already heard her sing. But in case you want to jam out to some Moana, here you go:

But she was already a Disney Princess™! So? Queen Lea Salonga provided the singing voices for both Princess Jasmine and Mulan. A beautiful voice is a beautiful voice, and one head can hold multiple crowns.

Yara Shahidi, 18
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Hair? Red hair needed.

Can she sing? No idea.

Why would Disney cast her? Ms. Shahidi is already on Disney's radar what with them entrusting her to successfully launch a spin-off of Black-ish (which she did), so I wouldn't be surprised if they're looking to launch her film career in a big way.

Slightly Older, But Age-wise Makes More Sense

Zendaya, 21

Hair? Red hair needed, but she can evidently rock any hair color, including pink.

Can she sing? Yes. I think she has a very pleasant voice, and she's already been in a movie-musical, so she's all good:

Why would Disney cast her? She's certainly a familiar face and has worked with Disney in the past (and I believe is still attached to Marvel's Spider-Man franchise). Unlike Yara Shahidi, who also works for Disney, she wouldn't be as much of a risk because audiences are already familiar with her in a musical capacity.

Hailee Steinfeld, 21
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Hair? Red hair needed.

Can she sing? Yes. She has provided the world with this self-love classic:

Why would Disney cast her? With Bumblebee as a pretty high-profile release, Ms. Steinfeld may be on Disney's radar. I'll be honest though, of everyone on this list, she's the one I'm least convinced about.

Saoirse Ronan, 24
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Hair? A natural blonde, but she recently dyed her hair/is wearing a wig to play Mary, Queen of Scots. It looks fine.

Can she sing? Kinda? This clip isn't the best, but I think she's ok? But is "ok" enough for Ariel? Hmmmmmm....

She seems random? Yes, she is. But she's also probably on every casting shortlist regardless of whether or not she's right for the part. Then again, what part is Saoirse like Inertia not right for, y'know?

ONTD Original: Pansexual Women in Music

We know ONTD loves to be accepting and open of what people identify as, and it can be beneficial to learn from one another. Google defines "pansexuality" as:

"Not limited in sexual choice with regard to biological sex, gender, or gender identity."

Not to be confused with bisexuality, which is the attraction to exclusively men and woman. Now that we got a solid definition, here are 5 women in music who self-identify as pansexual and exercising their free thinking!

5. Janelle Monae

2018 is the year where Monae really made a statement about personal life with Dirty Computer. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Janelle Monae proudly discovered pansexuality as it helped her learn about who she was: "Being a black queer woman in America … someone who has been in relationships with both men and women — I consider myself to be a free-** motherf**ker... Later I read about pansexuality and I was like, ‘Oh, these are things that I identify with too.’ I’m open to learning more about myself.

Her coming out was ONTD and Mara Wilson approved!:

4. Rina Sawayama

Rising star Rina Sawayama expressed in her new released single that she identifies as queer and pansexual. She told Broadly of her realization for her song "Cherry": “It’s the truth for a lot of bi and pan people—they don’t feel authentically queer when they’re in heterosexual relationships, and that is what the song is about."

The ONTD reaction has been mixed.

3. Sia

In 2009, singer and songwriter Sia told news outlet Same Same that her attraction to people went beyond male and female, saying "before I was actually successful I'd always said I've always dated boys and girls and anything in between."

2. Kehlani

R&B songstress Kehlani took it to Twitter to share what she learned about herself and her sexuality: "cuz i keep geddin asked.. i’m queer. not bi, not straight. i’m attracted to women, men, REALLY attracted to queer men, non binary people, intersex people, trans people. lil poly pansexual papi hello good morning. does that answer your questions?"

There was a mixed reaction via ONTD.

1. Miley Cyrus

Miley confessed to her mother that she was pansexual at an early age of 14. In 2016 with an interview with Variety, she felt pansexuality was the most fitting to what she felt when she found attraction for a gender-neutral person: "I saw one human in particular who didn’t identify as male or female... Looking at them, they were both: beautiful and sexy and tough but vulnerable and feminine but masculine. And I related to that person more than I related to anyone in my life… I think that was the first gender-neutral person I’d ever met.

Twerking legend said of the epiphany: "Once I understood my gender more, which was unassigned, then I understood my sexuality more. I was like, ’Oh — that’s why I don’t feel straight and I don’t feel gay. It’s because I’m not.'”

ONTD felt some type of way about this too.

The Bloody Attempt to Steal a Princess: Historical ONTD Original

$
0
0
Today is the 68th birthday of Princess Anne, the Princess Royal. I thought it might be an apt time to look back on one of the most harrowing (but often forgotten) chapters in the history of the current royal family.

Long before Diana, Kate and Meghan, Princess Anne was considered the star of the British royal family. In March of 1974, the Queen's twenty-three-year-old only daughter was a newlywed, having married handsome army captain Mark Phillips just four months earlier, and her popularity was at an all-time high. She had even appeared on the cover of British Vogue three times.

So when petty burglar Ian Ball decided that he wanted to kidnap a public figure to hold for ransom, Anne was his first choice. Under an assumed name, he rented a secluded house in the countryside and a car. He equipped himself with handguns, tranquilizers, handcuffs, and a ransom note addressed to the Queen demanding two million pounds "or Anne will be shot dead".

On the first night of spring, he set out to make his plan a reality. He was ready for the men who would try to stop him: by the time the night was over, four of them would be lying in their own blood.

But there were two things he didn’t count on: a guy called 'The Geezer', and the princess’s own formidable personality.

Knowing the princess and her husband would be returning home from a publicized appearance, Ian Ball waited along the Mall that leads to Buckingham Palace until the Rolls Royce with the royal insignia approached, then overtook it and blocked it with his own car.

The crime scene, with Ball's white car blocking Princess Anne's Rolls Royce

Princess Anne was accompanied by her husband, her lady-in-waiting and her bodyguard, Scotland Yard Inspector James Beaton. Beaton, assuming the man was a disgruntled driver, got out to speak to him. Ball, with a gun in each hand, shot him in the shoulder.

Inspector Beaton holding the car door for Anne earlier in the evening

Beaton tried to return fire, but he'd been hit in his firing arm and his aim was off. After one shot, his gun jammed. When Anne's lady-in-waiting crawled out of the passenger-side door and fled in a panic, Beaton jumped back in the car and put himself between Ball and the royal couple (he would later say the princess remained "cool, calm and collected"), but Ball fired through the car window, shattering it and hitting Beaton twice more. Ball then got the door open again, and Beaton fell out of the car and onto the ground.

The chauffeur, Alexander Callender, started to step out of the car to confront the gunman, and Ball shot him in the chest. He slumped, bleeding, back into the car.

Ball reached into the car, grabbed Princess Anne by the arm and began pulling her out of the vehicle. Her husband, Captain Phillips, held her around the waist and a furious tug-of-war began, splitting open the back of Anne's evening gown"from top to bottom".

PRINCESS ANNE and CAPT. MARK PHILLIPS

Anne would later recall a male passerby who walked over to see what the fuss was about, peered placidly into the car as they struggled, and then calmly strolled off again down the Mall.

Anne remembers that she then had a "very tedious conversation" with her assailant: "I was scrupulously polite. I thought it was silly to be too rude at that stage...It was all so infuriating. I kept saying I didn’t want to get out of the car, and I was not going to get out of the car. I nearly lost my temper with him, but I knew that if I did, I should hit him and he would shoot me".

"Please come out, you've got to come", an increasingly frustrated Ball told her as he tried to drag her from her husband's grasp. "I want you to come with me for a day or two, because I want two million pounds. Will you get out of the car?"

"BLOODY LIKELY!" retorted the princess. "And I haven't got two million pounds!”

A tabloid reporter, Brian McConnell, arrived on the scene. He recognized the insignia on the car and knew a member of the royal family was under attack. "Don't be silly, old boy", he said, ever-so-Britishly. "Put the gun down."Ball shot him.

BRIAN MCCONNELL (left) and CONSTABLE HILLS

A young policeman, Constable Michael Hills, on patrol nearby heard the commotion and approached. Ball shot him in the stomach. But before passing out, Hills managed to radio his station for help.

A second chauffeur named Glanmore Martin at this point maneuvered his own car to pin in Ball’s, in order to prevent Ball from driving off with the princess.

And this is where The Geezer enters the story: 6'4" former boxer Ronald Russell (who had been known as ‘The Geezer’ during his fighting days) happened to be driving by:“I pulled over and heard a lot of banging and smashing which I thought was the general rumpus. But then Ball shot a policeman, and I thought ‘That’s a liberty, he needs sorting.” He punched Ball in the back of the head, but the gunman didn't go down.

RONALD ‘The Geezer’ RUSSELL

Still, the punch made Ball let go of the princess for a moment and provided enough of a distraction for her to finally make her move. As Ball turned to fire his gun at Russell (he missed by millimeters), Anne reached for the door handle behind her head and opened it, then flung her feet over her head and did a "backward somersault" out of the car. She waited for Ball to start running around the car to reach her again, and when he did, she sprang back into the car and slammed the door shut again.

Ball pointed his guns at the princess's head. At that, The Geezer punched him again, this time in the face. He went down this time, but got back up. Police were beginning to arrive in response to the radio call, although they were afraid to get too close to a man with two guns now trained on a member of the royal family.

Anne could see that Ball was becoming nervous. She began talking to him again, telling him that more police would be coming and he was losing his opportunity to get away. "Go on!" she told him. "Now's your chance!" He ran.

Remarkably, all four of the men shot by Ball recovered; the princess visited them all in the hospital.

Anne visiting Inspector Beaton (left) and Constable Hills in the hospital

Ball himself was captured only minutes after he ran from the princess's car, by Detective Constable Peter Edmonds, who chased him down in St. James Park and threw a coat over his head before tackling him. He pleaded guilty to kidnapping and attempted murder and was sentenced to life in a mental health facility, due to his history of mental illness.

IAN BALL

Nearly 45 years later, he remains there (although he has petitioned Parliament to free him as a "political prisoner"; he claims he was only trying to bring awareness to the lack of funding for mental health care in Britain and that he would have donated the entire ransom to the National Health Service for the benefit of the mentally ill).

CONSTABLE HILLS, DET. CONSTABLE EDMONDS, and INSPECTOR BEATON

The Queen awarded the George Cross for courage to Inspector Beaton and the George Medal to Ronald Russell and Constable Hills. Queen's Gallantry Medals went to Alexander Callendar, Brian McConnell and Peter Edmonds, and a commendation for brave conduct to Glanmore Martin. As the Queen presented The Geezer with his Medal, she thanked him and said “The medal is from the Queen of England. The thank you is from Anne’s mother.”

The medal ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Left to right behind the Queen and Princess Anne are Anne’s chauffeur Alexander Callender, her bodyguard Inspector James Beaton, Glanmore Martin (2nd chauffeur), Constable James Hills, Detective Constable Peter Edmonds, reporter Brian McConnell and ‘Ronald ‘The Geezer’ Russell

As for Princess Anne, she went back to riding her horses and performing public engagements. She excels at both: she competed as a member of Britain's equestrian team at the Olympics two years after the kidnapping attempt and is today at age 68 admired as the hardest-working royal, by a long shot: she routinely does more than twice as many official engagements every year as royals half her age do (last year, Anne completed 540 official engagements, compared to 209 for Prince Harry and just 171 for Prince William).

She and Captain Phillips went on to have two children, but after finding out that he had fathered another daughter as the result of a one-night stand with a schoolteacher in 1985, she began her own affair with her mother’s equerry, Timothy Laurence. Anne and Phillips divorced in 1992 and Anne promptly remarried to Laurence. They celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2017.

With her tours that in total have grossed $1.31 billion, over 300 million albums sold Madonna remains undisputed Queen Of Pop, one of the most famous woman ever to have lived - Madonna turns 60 tomorrow.
OP won't ignore the fact that Madonna these days is much more likely to be attacked than appreciated: for years she's been told to dress more appropriate (for her age, for occasion, because she's a mother etc), for dating younger men, for speaking up her mind, and that one time she fell over the stage.
It is easy to forget how influential she's been over the years. Music, fashion and just whole concept of being a celebrity, she helped to shape today's pop culture landscape.
As she's turning 60, OP would like to go through just a few ways Madonna has changed the world (facts are facts)

Madonna's influence reigns supreme on today's female artists

Way long before Beyonce and Taylor Swift, Madonna really was the first female pop star that created image of an independence, control and drive. Nowadays Madonna often shows her soft side and vulnerability (2016 Billboard speech), but back in the day you wouldn't see that side of Madonna, despite all her personal suffering (she lost her mother when she was only 5) she has rarely let the world see any emotional fragility. Instead, she'd wear costumes that rather looked like an armor, her famous cone bra corset designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier, or wear a man’s suit, in 1985 Playboy and Penthouse published a number of nude photos of Madonna taken in 1978, the publication of the photos caused a media uproar, but Madonna remained unapologetic and defiant. "I’m tough, I’m ambitious and I know exactly what I want," she once said. "If that makes me a bitch, OK."

Revolutionized music videos

Madonna's music videos have depicted controversial subjects such as teen pregnancy, racism, religion, sex, and violence. Along with Michael Jackson, Madonna had used MTV and music videos to establish her popularity and to enhance her recorded work. Since the 80's no other pop star embraced the concept of the music video like Madonna has. Her "Justify My Love", "Erotica" and "What It Feels Like For A Girl" videos were banned from TV due to controversy (first two for being way too sexually explicit and the last one for violence and abuse) Madonna has 69 official music videos.

She brought female sexuality front and center

Madonna is cited as an icon of sexual freedom and expression. Since her first outrages performance at the VMA in '84 she fought the double standards that it was okay for men to exploit their sexuality, but if you're a woman then you should just suppress yours. Madonna easily transmogrified from virgin to dominatrix each time achieving iconic status. She was never afraid to show it to the whole world, she owned her sexuality and marketed it in the way that could benefit her and her career. Madonna became one of the world's first performers to manipulate the juxtaposition of sexual and religious themes. By releasing her coffee book "Sex" in 1992, all mainstream media pretty much slut-shamed her (before that term had even been invented)

Madonna is a pop's fashion provocateur

In 1985 when Like A Virgin went nuclear, a spate of teenage girls began dressing and acting like Madonna, copying her revealing clothes, mesh gloves, sunglasses and streaked, tousled hair. They were the Madonna wannabes. Through their numbers and fervor have diminished through the years along with Madonna's growing movement toward adult themes, wannabes persist to this day.The first known use of this word was in 1981, so it's association with Madonna occurred very shortly after it came to be. In 1990, the word was added to Webster's Dictionary. Through the years Madonna has served many Iconic fashion moments. Who can forget her whole 80's look, or cone bra, or her disco persona or perhaps her dominatrix fashion choices. Noone's saying she invented those looks, but she served them like no other.

Her documentary was pretty much a precursor to reality TV that we know it now

In a lot of ways Madonna's 1991 tour documentary "Truth Or Dare" can be seen as the precursor to the reality TV that we know it now. Black and white footage showed us what Madonna's like behind the stage, home and on the road. Little did people know most of the scenes were staged for the cameras. It wasn't your regular "fly on the wall" tour documentary that existed before, it was built around a plot that was constructed – a combination of reality and invention. It's also a relic of a time before grueling media training, when pop stars didn't hang on the approval of their publicists before talking. Also it's very quotable.

Madonna's tours set the extravaganza example for many others

Before Madonna, visually most tours were just a dull affair. But in 1990 Madonna changed that. Blond Ambition's Tour unique structure instantly became a blueprint for all other pop concerts tours to follow. There were 1.500 spotlights and four sets that completely covered the stage, all of which were transported from town to town in 18 trucks. Over 100 crew members spent two full days assembling a monstrous stage at each new venue, generating catering bills of $15.000+ per gig. Blond Ambition Tour was a sensation and ambitious dance routines made possible by a specially designed microphone worn like a headset (most people know it as "Madonna mic" now) This tour also solidified Madonna’s status as a cultural tour-de-force and groundbreaking pop artist. Rolling Stone called Blond Ambition the best tour of the ’90s. Since then all Madonna tours were separated into 4-6 different sections, often causing a controversy. She is the highest grossing solo touring artist in history. In 2009 she broke her own record when Sticky & Sweet Tour became the highest grossing tour by a solo artist (previously it was her Confessions Tour from 2006)

First female pop star who popularized reinvention

David Bowie perhaps was the very first artist who originated the art of pop reinvention, but it was Madonna who took it to a completely different level. Madonna has changed her hair, makeup, style - even her face and body. She didn't wake up like this. Ever. She built her image with her bare hands, out of cone bras and wigs and lipstick. Nowadays you see other pop girls changing their style left and right and there's nothing wrong with that, but Madonna was the first female artist to play with her image so widely.

Madonna is one of the biggest gay Icons out there

The Advocate named Madonna the greatest gay icon of all times for a reason. Madonna stuck her neck out and always stood up for LGBT community before it was cool to do so. Now of course we see pretty much every other pop girl out there speaking about gay rights and how they support gay people, while in reality they don't really care about it and just use it to gain more fans and coins. Madonna from day one of her career surrounded herself with openly gay men, most of her best friends were gay guys (Christopher Flynn - her ballet teacher and mentor, Keith Haring, Martin Burgoyne). Numerous times Madonna insisted that all gay people should be treated equally, and there's nothing wrong with being gay. She never backed down on supporting LGBT people and spoke about it in the 80's when gay people were marginalized. In 2016 Madonna spent Thanksgiving with homeless LGBT kids in Brooklyn. So there's no surprise she's widely celebrated in gay community, rightfully so.

Madonna's humanitarian/philnatrophic work is often overlooked

In the 80's Madonna was fearless when it came to doing the right thing regarding AIDS. During her Blond Ambition tour in New jersey Madonna raised $300.000+ for amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS research, in the name of Keith Haring. She has made several PSAs on the topic and was the most famous person to attend the fund raising AIDS Dance-A-Thones. In 1990 Madonna has received a Commitment to Life Award Award from AIDS Project Los Angeles, then in 1991 was honored with an Award of Courage from amfAR. Her commitment and support to a cause started rumors that Madonna herself was HIV positive. In 2017 Madonna with her Raising Malawi foundation build a a hospital in Malawi named after Madonna's daughter - The Mercy James Institute of Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care in one year only has done 1,639 surgeries on children, including successful separation of conjoined twins at the liver. In 2006 during her Confessions Tour in Russia Madonna visited orphans living in Children’s Home No.30. she brought over 20 cakes, winter coats and promised to donate a certain amount of funds to charitable foundations Pomogi.Org and Naked Hearts. It is impossible to cover every charitable thing Madonna has done, from visiting terminally ill children in 1985 several times, to contributing funds to three organizations attempting to improve conditions in Detroit in 2014. These things often don't get a lot of attention from press, as it's more entertaining to slam Madonna for something silly like her age and what she wears and how she acts. Which brings us to my very last paragraph.

Madonna is turning 60, how dare she!

Madonna has done many things well worth criticizing, but it is an embarrassing reflection of the culture when some of the harshest criticism she receives is so frequently intertwined with apologetically ageist commentary. She's the #1 touring solo act on the planet, every move she makes still sparks debate in the media and she is years from the age at which workers typically consider retiring, yet a common thread in the public complaints she's received for the past let's say 10-15 years has been the suggestion - that she is too old to be doing, well anything. Maybe people aren't used to seeing older people do the things Madonna is doing and behave in the way Madonna is behaving because society largely removes opportunities from us as we age, but all of Madonna's banked power from her youth is allowing her to override that barrier. And as for those who criticize Madonna's age not in relation to her work but just because she is, no shit, older than Nefertiti, Madonna guaranteed the last laugh, if they're lucky, they'll get to be her age one day too, at which time they will have some serious self-loathing to sort out.

Not So Bad In LA: Sardonic Pop Anthems (ONTD Original)

Sardonic Pop Anthems

Pop singers live to create a life that will stroke their ego with fame and success - but it always comes with a cost. These are songs that convey a perverse reckoning between being cynical of society's superficiality, but also succumbing to its obsessive nature. You can take these as either cautionary tales, or accounts of those who sold their soul only to find out it's Not So Bad In LA(out on iTunes).

11. What You Waiting For - Gwen Stefani

Born to blossom, bloom to perish / You know you're only known
'Cause of your sex chromosome / I know it's so messed up how our society all thinks
Life is short, you're capable
Look at your watch now / You're still a super hot female
You got your million dollar contract / And they're all waiting for your hot track

In wonderland fashion, Gwen battles pressures of time and taking chances while she still has superficial and extrinsic advantages (a record deal, female youth, and potential to be huge as a solo act).

10. Not So Bad In L.A - Allie X

In a city that lives while its bright stars die / And you start to get old when you turn 25
Where else can you go when you got that drive? / And everybody says when they arrive

It's not so bad in L.A / The parking's cheap and valet
Those blue skies day after day / It's not so bad in L.A

Allie writes about her experience in LA and sarcastically agrees with its decadence.

9. Los Ageless - St. Vincent

The last days of the sunset superstars / Girls in cages playing their guitars
But how can I leave? / I just follow the hood of my car
In Los Ageless, the waves they never break / They build and build until you don't have no escape
But how can I leave? / I just follow my hood to the sea, go to sleep

St. Vincent talks about pursuit of stardom and riding through its culture.

8. Gods and Monsters - Lana Del Rey

You got that medicine I need / Fame, liquor, love, give it to me slowly
Put your hands on my waist, do it softly / Me and God, we don’t get along, so now I sing

Lana is chasing her fame through doing deeds that lose her innocence and falling into indulgence, while insisting she's not losing her soul.

7. Don't Let Me Get Me - Pink

LA told me, "You'll be a pop star / All you have to change is everything you are."
Tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears / She's so pretty, that just ain't me

Referencing L.A. Reid who gave her first record deal, Pink talks about breaking free from masquerading an image she gave into due to low self esteem.

6. Controversy - Natalia Kills

Bath salts, authority / Online's the the new reality
The Internet is reality / Technology killed reality

The internet becomes superfluous with information where it becomes distorted and hard to tell what's real. Natalia is numb by things typically regarded controversial due to constant exposure. #innovatedglitchartsince2010

5. Teen Idle - Marina and the Diamonds

I wanna be a virgin pure / A 21st century whore
I want back my virginity / So I can feel infinity
I wanna drink until I ache / I wanna make a big mistake
I want blood, guts and angel cake / I’m gonna puke it anyway

Granted anything off Family Jewels would be more fitting for the list, Marina reflects on her 'wasted youth' in "Teen Idle" where she starkly wished she lived them out more, even in a way young troubled celebrities have.

4. Welcome - Christina Aguilera

Is it all blue skies / Fun and games until you fall
Then you're left without anyone at all
You're riding on a shooting star / With a smile upon your face
But soon the shine fades

And you're left out all alone / Wondering where did they all go?

Xtina sings about the deceptions and fleeting benefits of fame/show business as if it's all a circus that eventually ends. #Happy12thBirthdayBacktoBasics

3. Intuition - Jewel

You got something that you want me to sell / Sell your sin, just cash in
You got something that you want me to tell / You'll love me, wait and see

If you want me, don't play games / I promise it won't be in vain

Jewel says that the only way to get through a rapidly changing world of fads is by following your heart, even if 'selling out' is an option.

2. Hollywood - Madonna

I lost my memory in Hollywood / I've had a million visions, bad and good
There's something in the air in Hollywood / I tried to leave it, but I never could

Madonna thoroughly lived through Hollywood and continues to fall into the allure of it even when she lost her memory, reputation, and moral compass. 'How can it hurt you when it looks so good' suggests a naive attraction.

1. The Fear - Lily Allen

I'll look at the sun and I'll look in the mirror / I'm on the right track, yeah I'm on to a winner

I don't know what's right and what's real anymore / And I don't know how I'm meant to feel anymore
And when do you think it will all become clear? / Cause I'm being taking over by the fear

Lily Allen falls victim to overpowering societal pressures and what media programmed into her: intrusive ideas of longing for wealth, being thin, consumerism, and nudity for attention.
