ONTD Original: #FantasiaFest Edition. 10 films ranked & reviewed; "Cam" gets picked up by @Netflix!

sILfjv.png
Fantasia International Festival, now in its 22nd year, is the largest genre film festival in North America. Fantasia has been credited with launching the J-horror craze in the West and the careers of filmmakers such as Adam Wingard. Filmmakers whose work screened at this year's festival and who appeared as guests include: Yoko Yamanaka (Amiko), Tilman Singer (Luz), Shinsuke Sato (Bleach), Joseph Kahn (Bodied), Mike Wiluan (Buffalo Boys), Rusty Cundieff (Tales From the Hood 2), Robert Krzykowski (The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot), Gigi Saul Guerrero (La Quinceanera), & Park Hoon-jung (VIP; The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion).

I devoured ten screenings while attending Fantasia. Here's a ranking of the films that I watched, along with some reviews and other social media goodies. I have also included the festival's award winners. One of the films on my list, Cam, has been acquired by Netflix - more on that below!

I have used spoiler cuts throughout the post to save space.

10. Born of Woman 2018
Okay, one of my ten "movies" was a collection of 9 short films from 7 different countries. So to be fair, I will start off my ranking with this since it's not technically a feature. All of the short films in the collection were good, but a few stuck out. My absolute favorite was the Irish short Catcalls, directed by Kate Dolan. Here's a peek:

My other two favorite shorts were Jiwon Moon's Nose Nose Nose EYES!, which was a creepy, fucked up and superbly acted horror short from South Korea, and the Norwegian sci-fi Voyager by Kjersti Helen Rasmussen, which was quietly unsettling and featured bearded aliens.

Reviews:

Full list of the directors & their shorts:

  • Hanna Bergholm, Puppet Master (Finland)

  • Jiwon Moon, NOSE NOSE NOSE EYES! (South Korea)

  • Kate Dolan, Catcalls (Ireland) "This is another short film that should be made into a feature ASAP, because damnit, we need more women getting revenge on scumbags."

  • Kjersti Helen Rasmussen, Voyager (Norway)

  • Manon Alirol & Léo Hardt, Petite Avarie (France)

  • Marie Dvorakova, Who's Who in Mycology (Czech Republic)

  • Faye Jackson, The Old Woman Who Buried Her Fear Under the Stairs (England)

  • Ida Joglar, The Gaze (US)

  • Chelsea Lupkin, Lucy's Tale (US)

9. Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich
uZ6WfW.jpg
The latest Puppet Master film is going to be hated by many and that's totally fine. It's gross-out, obscene, and completely offensive gore. It expands the Puppet Master mythology, taking place in the current day; our main character, Edgar, returns to live with his parents and discovers his late brother's Blade doll in the closet. A puppet auction and convention is to take place on the anniversary of the Toulon murders, so Edgar decides to make a little money off the doll. It turns out that Toulon had a huge catalog of puppets, so an entire hotel is filled with people attending the auction. This means not only do characters exist solely to be killed off, but I lost count of how many people die in this film. The special effects were excellent, and two particularly gory sequences won't be forgotten any time soon. While I had fun watching this in a packed theater - everyone was yelling and cheering - it'll be a while before I'll want to watch it again. I wasn't too keen on the main actor's mumbling and dead pan style, and I thought his sidekick friend, Merkowitz, stole the show. Charlene Yi was underused in my opinion. There are a fuckton of puppets in the film, probably more than in other Puppet Master entries, but I wish we had seen more of the puppets' personalities.

If you enjoyed the other entries in the Puppet Master series, you already know what to expect so why not give it a watch. If shock gore isn't your thing, however, then stay the hell away.
Reviews:

"Horror has always had a tradition of flexing boundaries, even if all they’re testing is the edges of good taste, but this isn’t that. It feels less like expert provocation and more like your iffy uncle trying to get away with a racist story by passing it off as something they heard on the news."

Social media goodies:

I'm somewhere in that crowd, LOL.

8. Laplace's Witch
IBFU1w.jpg
Shô Sakurai stars as Aoe Shusuke, an environmental scientist/professor who is investigating two mysterious deaths caused by hydrogen sulfide poisoning. At the site of one of the deaths, he meets an intriguing young woman (Suzu Hirose) who calls herself "Laplace's Witch" and who seems to possess mysterious powers. Shusuke is determined to find a scientific explanation for the deaths, but there's clearly something else going on.

Takashi Miike is one of my favorite filmmakers, and I kicked off my festival experience with this screening. This was one of my most anticipated films of the festival, but honestly I was a bit disappointed. I love Miike when his movies are fucking crazy and violent, not gonna lie, and this is NOT that. This is a fairly straight forward supernatural mystery that I did enjoy, but something about it was a bit lacking. The villain's arc was fun to watch, as he became more OTT as the film progressed. There were moments of genuine humor, but there was also a portion of cheese. The supernatural aspect of the plot was pretty cool; however, when reflecting back on the Miike films that I've seen, this one may be the most forgettable.

Reviews:

"In the end, the film is a regular, run of the mill Japanese drama with a splash of the fantastic when it comes to incorporating the concept of Laplace's Demon."

7. Lôi Báo
8wDLhb.jpg

Cuong Seven stars as Tam, a comic book artist who imagines himself as the superhero he's penning, Lôi Báo. He has a beautiful wife and child, and things are going good - until he receives the devastating news that he's terminally ill. There is little hope of survival, and his happy home becomes fractured as the illness affects Tam's personality and outlook. In a ridiculous plot point that I won't reveal here, Tam is able to undergo an incredibly risky head transplant surgery in which his head is transplated onto the body of a deceased man. Shortly after the surgery's success, Tam realizes he has newfound abilities in strength. Which is good for him, because the body he used for the transplant was a member of the mafia, and the mafia is now after Tam.

The action scenes are solid, particularly a sequence at the beginning of the film when Tam is imagining himself as a superhero. My main criticism of the film is that one has to suspend a LOT of disbelief for this film to work. I rarely watch anything superhero related, so maybe they're all similar in the sense that the twists and turns of Lôi Báo's plot veer on the ridiculous and corny; but that said, the film is enjoyable.

Reviews:

"Lôi Báo is good fun and hopefully a harbinger of a new Vietnamese action renaissance that will bring back the spirit of the films from a decade ago."

"Lôi Báo isn’t a film I’d suggest people actively avoid. It IS slick on occasion, and many will find its “off the rails” nature charming."

6. A Rough Draft
ROYiih.jpg

A Rough Draft is based on Sergei Lukianenko's novel of the same name. Kirill, played by Nikita Volkov, is a video game designer whose life is about to change. On the same night he is celebrated at work, he loses his girlfriend. But that's not all he's going to lose: Slowly at first, and then practically within a blink of an eye, Kirill's possessions, apartment, friends, and family are no longer his. It is as if Kirill has never existed at all. He's now afunctional, and brought to a tower in the middle of Moscow where he is tasked to work as a "customs officer," which is essentially a gatekeeper. The tower serves as a point between multiple versions of Moscow, and in these parallel universes Kirill meets other functionals. But he's determined to get his regular life back - and his love.

The film had some fantastic special effects, the most noteworthy being the matryoshka dolls who can fly through the air and go on the attack. There are many well-filmed action scenes, although some of them were a bit too Matrix-y. The world building of the film was excellent, but there are many characters to keep track of throughout. I felt a little unsatisfied at the conclusion although I look forward to an inevitable sequel.

Reviews:

"A Rough Draft takes a big budget and top notch special effects and turns it into one of the most entertaining films at this year's Fantasia."

5. The Travelling Cat Chronicles
4r1dER.jpg

Kôichirô Miki directs this adaptation of Hiro Arikawa's novel. Sôta Fukushi stars as Satoru, who must find a new home for his beloved cat, Nana. He seeks out his friends from childhood and high school to see if Nana would be a good fit in one of their homes. Along the way we learn about Satoru's life, his family, and how important Nana is to him.

My own two cats are my world, so I felt an automatic connection to the film. I knew I was going to cry while watching and I was fully prepared to embarrass myself in the theater. I quickly realized I wasn't alone; all throughout the film many people around me were loudly blowing their noses, sniffling, and even full-out sobbing hysterically. If you're a cat lover, or had a cat in your family, I pretty much guarantee that if you see this movie you WILL cry. The Travelling Cat Chronicles is not totally depressing - thankfully, Nana is given a voice and has adorable and sweet commentary throughout the film - but it is emotional and knows exactly how to pull at cat lovers' heartstrings.

Fun Fact: Sota Fukushi stars in this film, as well as other Fantasia Festival entries: The Bleach adaptation, Laughing Under the Clouds, and the previously discussed Laplace's Witch.

Reviews:

"There are terrible melodramas, and there are fantastic ones that our society needs more of in especially dark timelines, such as the one we're living in now; I daresay that even with the sadness and death on display (more passing on, really), The Travelling Cat Chronicles is one of those rare films that reaffirms a broken faith in humanity and the ways that we are all connected."

4. Parallel
Z8l0tL.jpg
This film needs a poster! So here's a still of the cast.

Four friends who live and work together developing apps happen to discover a portal to parallel universes in their own house. Faced with an impossible time crunch to develop a parking app, they use the portal to get the job done. Of course, it doesn't stop there, as each of them use the portal for their own individual advantages. This comes with some serious consequences that play out in a suspenseful and entertaining style. A killer concept and a top-notch cast, particularly in the character of Devin, played by Aml Ameen. I loved this movie, and determining its ranking in my list was incredibly difficult. I'm so excited for everyone else to see this! If you love character driven, fantastical and dark movies then I highly recommend it.

Parallel is filmmaker Isaac Ezban's third feature and his first in English; the script was written by Scott Blaszak.

Reviews:

"[Ezban's] obsession with identity and ethics in worlds devoid of the usual social contract is on full display here. Ezban likes toying with the what-if's of science fiction in a much more esoteric way than your typical director, and that makes his work interesting, even when - like Parallel - it's a bit dodgy in the execution."

3. The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot
50VADm.jpg

The second I learned that The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot would have its world premiere at Fantasia, I resolved to somehow be there for it. By stroke of luck, the premiere was to take place during the days that I booked my accomodation!

Sam Elliott and Aidan Turner star as Calvin - Elliot as Calvin in the present day, Turner as a young Calvin. Both actors killed it in the role. I wasn't quite sure Turner could be a convincing young Sam Elliott, but I had no problem accepting this was the younger version of him. The plot is self-explanatory from the title - both of those things take place in the film. But The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot is more than that: The film is a study on Calvin's life - his actions, his regrets, his love, and his relationship with his brother (played by Larry Miller). I was definitely crying by the end because stories about getting old and reflecting on what we've done in our lives have been hitting me hard lately. Although the title may seem silly, this film is anything but.

Reviews:

Simply too many to embed. Everyone is loving this film!

Nightmare on Film St: "Director/writer Robert Krzykowski has gifted us a one-of-a-kind experience that is both exhilarating and bittersweet. Sam Elliott is enough reason to see the film. He will warm your heart and bring you to the edge of tears."
Dim The House Lights: "...Krzykowski and crew made a thoughtful, meditative piece of work that deserves genuine consideration and not the knee-jerk derision its title will probably doom it to."
RogerEbert.com:"'The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot' is a movie of an old soul, one that’s wise beyond its decades just like Andrew Haigh’s '45 Years.' The film is more powerful than viewers of either high or lowbrow desires could desire, and it fashions a haunting tone out of its premise."

2. Cam
Fantasia Awards
BEST SCREENPLAY: Isa Mazzei
BEST FIRST FEATURE:CAM (d. Daniel Goldhaber)

llDgL2.jpg

Madeline Brewer is captivitating in the lead role as Alice, who performs as a cam girl under the name Lola. Her viewers love her and are devoted (their adoration and obsession is merely one way the story freaked me out), especially one fan in particular named Tinker. Soon after moving up in the site ranks, Lola finds herself locked out of her cam account... because another Lola is streaming live. For me, I was unsettled right away by the opening scene, where we see the real Lola performing and we witness her desperation to move up in the ranks. That unsettled feeling didn't let up as the story went on. Once Lola found herself kicked out of her account, the nightmare truly begins. She's lost control over her fans, her income, and most importantly, her identity. And does Tinker have anything to do with what's going on? Can she trust her cam girl friends? The film is a surreal experience, filmed colorfully with a splash of gore, and a standout performance from Brewer.

Reviews:

“'Cam' is far more compelling when tracing Alice’s dilemma than when actually drawing it out — aside from a scene where two cops disregard the safety of a sex worker, it’s much scarier before its heroine begins to recognize what’s at stake — but Goldhaber’s steady hand ensures that things are rivetingly queasy from start to finish, and Brewer’s performance is powerful enough to flip the script on the entire cam experience."

NEWS:

  • Netflix has acquired Cam, which was co-financed by Blumhouse Productions and Gunpowder & Sky and produced by Divide/Conquer.

  • Cast includes Madeline Brewer, Patch Darragh, Melora Walters, and Devin Druid.

1. The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion
Fantasia Award
BEST ACTRESS:
Kim Da-mi
l9KqxT.jpg
At the time of writing this, I'm still reeling from the ultraviolent and bloody climax - one of the most satisfying final acts in a film I've seen all year - in this superhero thriller. Kim Da-mi plays Ja-yoon, an 18 year old girl who decides to enter a TV talent show because she needs the prize money to help her struggling family. Her appearance on the show wows viewers - not only can she sing, but she also reveals a very special trick that she can do. There is just one problem: Evil people from Ja-yoon's past were watching too, and they've been waiting a long time to find her. You see, ten years earlier, Ja-yoon escaped a massacre at the facility where she was raised and genetically engineered to have super abilities.

The performances in the film were striking, particularly Kim, who has to display a range of emotions throughout - The Witch: Part 1 is astonishgly her first leading role - and Choi Woo-shik, who plays a scene-stealing villainous character. When the two were together, they were electrifying to watch.

Reviews:

"It takes its sweet time getting in motion, but when it does, The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion - a bit of an unwieldy title, if you ask me - is a hell of a lot of fun and will both satisfy Korean action fans looking for something different, and leave them desperate for more."

MOVIES

Ghostbusters (1984)

As if the librarian in this 80s classic doesn't have enough to worry about (scarce funding, sleeping patrons, out of touch board members), she now has to contend with a ghost?? Give this woman a pay raise.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Former banker turned convicted murderer Andy Dufresne is sent to work in the prison library not because of his affinity for books, though he does have that, but as a front so he can help prison officials with their financial situations. But Andy thrives in his new role as prison librarian and even scores enough funding from the state for new books and renovations. He helps transform the once dingy store room into a cozy library and helps many a fellow prisoner get their GEDs.

Party Girl (1995)

After she is arrested for throwing an illegal party, Mary asks her godmother for bail money. To pay the money back, Mary begins working as a library clerk. She hates it at first but slowly starts to take pride in her work and herself.*

*Full disclosure: I have not seen this movie but just discovered it is available on Youtube so I'm excited to watch it!

Desk Set (1957)

Bunny Watson is the head librarian of the research department of a television network. Everything is business as usual until Richard Sumner is sent to outfit the department with a brand new computer to take over the research load. (Even all the way back in 1957 they had to deal with this shit!) But Richard underestimates the librarians' knowledge and moxie.

TELEVISION

Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1996-2003)

What librarian list would be complete without Rupert Giles? More than just a mentor for Buffy, Giles guided her through her most difficult tribulations and became a father figure to her.

The Twilight Zone: The Obsolete Man (1961)

In a future dystopia society, those who are no longer considered useful are declared "obsolete" and executed. As books are certainly of no use to the state, Mr. Wordsworth, a librarian, is sentenced to die.

(don't read the yt comments, my god)

Parks and Recreation (2009-2015)

Oh, the hated library. That's right - everyone in the Pawnee Parks department hates the fucking library and all the punk ass book jockeys whom it employs. But is there a more hated librarian than crazy she-demon Tammy Swanson?

Bob's Burgers (2011-)

School librarian Mr. Ambrose is a disillusioned weirdo who also happens to be a witch.

TELEVISION

Saturday Night Live: Margot Robbie (2016)

We all know about the over played Sexy Librarian trope. SNL plays with that and adds a twist. I think of this video whenever someone gets creepy at the library so issa a real mood.

All That (1994-2005)

THE LOUD LIBRARIAN WILL NOT TOLERATE ANY NOISE IN HER LIBRARY. SO DEAL WITH IT OR GET OUT.

The Magicians (2015 - )

The Library of the Neitherlands contains all the knowledge in the universe. Protecting that knowledge is the Order of the Librarians.

Stranger Things (2016 - )

It's shitty to ghost anyone but ghosting a librarian? Hello, death wish. Unfortunately, that is exactly what Chief Hopper did to Hawkins librarian Marissa resulting in an awkward encounter in the public library. Ever the professional, she cuts him down to size but quickly helps him with his research.

MOVIES

The Mummy (1999)

Evie is a hard working albeit clumsy librarian who doesn't get the respect she deserves. Her natural curiosity leads her on an adventure of a lifetime with sexy 1999 Brendan Fraser.

An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000)

Miss Marpole (Miss Marple heh), knowledgeable librarian and 1970s memorabilia fan, hits it off immediately with Goofy.

Foul Play (1978)

Like so many cozy mysteries before and after, Gloria is a librarian who finds herself embroiled in a murder mystery!

The Music Man (1962)

Conman Harold bursts into River City with the hopes of swindling the whole dang town. Fearful that the town librarian will find him out, he sets out to seduce her.

BONUS

Night Vale (2012 - )

The Night Vale Public Library is a dangerous place where for a long time there wasn't even an entrance. Patrons would just wake up there in a haze, wander around, then wake up in their bed with a stack of new books on their nightstand. The Librarians are malevolent and deeply feared to the point where librarian repellent dispensers are readily available throughout the library. Please check out your books with caution.

This week's creepy post explores what's new in paranormal pop culture and more! Curated by hjalmartazar and yours truly!

BOOKS & COMICS

Marjorie Liu just became the first woman to win the comic book industry’s top prize for writers - the Eisner Award for Best Writer for her work, Monstress. Also, author Varla Ventura discusses her new book, Paranormal Parlor: Ghosts, Séances, and Tales of True Hauntings.

  • The Eisner award winners were recently announced at Comic Con in San Diego.

  • Marjorie Liu became the first woman to take home the prize for Best Writer, winning for for Monstress.

  • Synopsis: Set in an alternate matriarchal 1900's Asia, in a richly imagined world of art deco-inflected steampunk, MONSTRESS tells the story of a teenage girl who is struggling to survive the trauma of war, and who shares a mysterious psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, a connection that will transform them both and make them the target of both human and otherworldly powers.

  • Add the book to your Goodreads!

  • In this interview, author Varla Ventura talks ghosts, her favorite part of the haunting phenomenon, the paranormal book industry, what we learn from sharing ghost experiences with each other, and how technology is changing the ghost experience and how we share it.

  • Ventura also shares a supernatural experience of her own: “In the book, I talk about a Ouija experience I had, I was about 7 years old. My sister (aged 8) and I made contact via the Ouija board with the spirit of a little pioneer girl whose loan grave was discovered alone in the woods, not far from my family’s house. My mom had given my sister and I the board for Christmas, and I think she underestimated the likelihood of us making ‘contact.’ The look on my sister’s face when ‘correspondence’ really began…it told me she was too freaked out to be the one moving the planchette. And I knew I wasn’t moving it. But it was definitely moving.”

  • Varla Ventura's Paranormal Parlor: Ghosts, Seances, and Tales of True Hauntings was published on June 1, 2018; check it out on Goodreads.

SERIES & SHORTS

DID YOU KNOW? Sterling K. Brown appeared in the pilot episode of the alien invasion series, The Abandon. Also, we have some news on Fierce Girls, which is the first Indigenous superhero series created for Indigenous girls.

  • Sterling K. Brown stars alongside Jordan Mahome, Morocco Omari, Jaime Lincoln Smith, and Billy Eugene Jones in the pilot for The Abandon.

  • The Abandon is about five friends “who embark on a hiking trip in the summer of 2012 only to find themselves caught in the midst of an alien invasion.”
  • Keith Josef Adkins wrote and directed the pilot.

  • Unfortunately, a full series was never able to get made, but you can watch the pilot episode at the source!

  • Fierce Girls’ goal is to “spark change and empower young Indigenous women in Canada, New Zealand and around the world.”

  • Loretta Todd created, executive produced and directed the series.

  • Todd didn’t like a lot of what was being produced and aimed at young girls between the ages of 8-12, saying that a lot of what she saw was “conflict heavy, with a lot of sarcasm and all the girls being very catty.”

  • The series focuses on the characters of Kisik (Jenine Yuksel) and Anika (Vancouver-based Maori actor Kaea Taurere), who “are two Indigenous teens with newly acquired, superpowered warrior spirits.”

  • Find out more at fiercegirls.tv.

TELEVISION

The History Channel is bringing the real life Project Blue Book to the small screen with an upcoming series!

Filmmaker Jenn Wexler discusses The Ranger that’s currently premiering at film festivals. She answers 10 questions about her horror-punk film for an exclusive interview for Fright Fest.

Some of the points discussed in the interview:

  • Wexler discusses how she was drawn to the punk movement and how it informed the film.

  • Before making a feature, she wanted to learn as much as possible about filmmaking so she worked in marketing and producing while making short films.

  • Her goal of The Ranger was to “combine the outrageous, absurd humor of 80s punk movies with the thrill of the slasher, all circling around a girl who’s trying to figure herself out in the face of others telling her who she should be.”

  • The Ranger opens up Arrow Video FrightFest on Thurs 23rd August.

  • He and co-star Trevante Rhodes recently watched a rough cut of the film together.

  • On previous Predator films: “’It’s really cool to revisit and be part of something that was part of your life and part of pop culture for you as a person when you were a child.”

  • He says the movie has more comedy than you might expect, and that women are going to like the film.

  • He also says this new Predator is “ridiculous” and a “giant”, and will beat all other previous Predators.

  • Photos of the cast at the source!

More news for #SciFiSunday, Afrofuturism edition!

  • Actor, poet, rapper, writer, etc. Saul Williams has spent the past 5 years developing his multimedia project MartyrLoserKing. The feature film part of the project, Neptune Frost, has been raising funds via Kickstarter. With the money raised, Williams hopes to begin production in 2019.

  • Neptune Frost is a science fiction film, “set in a Burundian village made of recycled computer parts. This village is also home to what the synopsis calls, ‘the world's most subversive hacking collective.’ The sci-fi film tells the love story between an intersex runaway and a coltan miner.”

  • A trailer for the film is available at the source.

In the interview, Williams discusses:

  • Why he chose to set the film in Burundi: “I chose Burundi because I know that it's relatively unknown for Western students, let's say. Americans are famous for not having a great sense of geography.” and that “[I]f I say Burundi, your imagination is free because you don't really have too much associated with that place.”

  • Filming in Rwanda and casting for the film: “I get so mad when I step into a sci-fi film and the first face is see is fucking Matt Damon. How am I supposed to release my imagination if it's this motherfucker I see every fucking day?”

  • The term “Afrofuturism”: ”I've been waiting for this public interest to arise in what we're now terming ‘Afrofuturism.’ I don't give a fuck what you call it. I think there's an American tent to that term. I think it comes from a Western gaze, where the idea of what others might called ‘magical realism’ or what have you has existed in other cultures and in African cultures in particular for eons.”

  • And lots more, it’s a great interview.

  • Variety exclusively reports that Yellow Veil Pictures has just bought the new German horror film, Luz.

  • Luz was written and directed by Tilman Singer and premiered at Berlin Film Festival. The film just had its North American debut at Fantasia International Film Festival. At Fantaspoa festival, star of Luz Luana Velis won best actress.

  • Synopsis from IMDB: Luz, a young cab driver, drags herself into the brightly lit entrance of a run-down police station. A demonic entity follows her, determined to finally be close to the woman it loves.

Finally, the Curse of La Llorona teaser was just released! James Wan is producing through his company, Atomic Monster Productions.

The Curse of La Llorona stars Linda Cardellini, Patricia Velasquez, Sean Patrick Thomas and Raymond Cruz.

Kqc7M8.jpgKing of Bollywood: Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema
by Anupama Chopra

Here is the astonishing true story of Bollywood, a sweeping portrait about a country finding its identity, a movie industry that changed the face of India, and one man's struggle to become a star. Shah Rukh Khan's larger than life tale takes us through the colorful and idiosyncratic Bollywood movie industry, where fantastic dreams and outrageous obsessions share the spotlight with extortion, murder, and corruption. Shah Rukh Khan broke into this $1.5 billion business despite the fact that it has always been controlled by a handful of legendary film families and sometimes funded by black market money. As a Muslim in a Hindu majority nation, exulting in classic Indian cultural values, Shah Rukh Khan has come to embody the aspirations and contradictions of a complicated culture tumbling headlong into American style capitalism. His story is the mirror to view the greater Indian story and the underbelly of the culture of Bollywood.

jr3Gog.jpgThe Fixers: Eddie Mannix, Howard Strickling and the MGM Publicity Machine
by E.J. Fleming

Eddie Mannix and Howard Strickling are virtually unknown outside of Hollywood and little-remembered even there, but as General Manager and Head of Publicity for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, they lorded over all the stars in Hollywood's golden age from the 1920s through the 1940s--including legends like Garbo, Dietrich, Gable and Garland. When MGM stars found themselves in trouble, it was Eddie and Howard who took care of them--solved their problems, hid their crimes, and kept their secrets. They were "the Fixers."

At a time when image meant everything and the stars were worth millions to the studios that owned them, Mannix and Strickling were the most important men at MGM. Through a complex web of contacts in every arena, from reporters and doctors to corrupt police and district attorneys, they covered up some of the most notorious crimes and scandals in Hollywood history, keeping stars out of jail and, more importantly, their names out of the papers.

Clara is a handful. The “It” Girl of the Jazz Age personifies the new woman of the 1920s onscreen, smoking, drinking bootleg hooch, and bursting with sex appeal. But her conduct off the set is even more scandalous. Hoping to impose a little order on Clara’s chaotic life, Paramount persuades Daisy to sign on as Clara’s personal secretary.

The trouble begins when Clara’s newest fiancé, cowboy star Rex Bell, wants to take over, and he and Daisy battle for control. Torn between her loyalty to Clara and her love for her family, Daisy has to make a difficult choice when she ends up in the county jail.

Here, Daisy sets the record straight, from her poverty-stricken childhood to her failed marriage; from a father in San Quentin to her rollercoaster time with Clara, leaving out none of the juicy details.

Pg0wrv.jpgDay of the Locust
by Nathanael West

Nathanael West's Hollywood is not the glamorous "home of the stars" but a seedy world of little people, some hopeful, some despairing, all twisted by their by their own desires -- from the ironically romantic artist narrator to a macho movie cowboy, a middle-aged innocent from America's heartland, and the hard-as-nails call girl would-be-star whom they all lust after. An unforgettable portrayal of a world that mocks the real and rewards the sham, turns its back on love to plunge into empty sex, and breeds a savage violence that is its own undoing, this novel stands as a classic indictment of all that is most extravagant and uncontrolled in American life.

ufJYV0.jpgScandals of Classic Hollywood: Sex, Deviance, and Drama from the Golden Age of American Cinema
by Anne Helen Petersen

Believe it or not, America's fascination with celebrity culture was thriving well before the days of TMZ, Perez Hilton, Charlie Sheen's breakdown and allegations against Woody Allen. And the stars of yesteryear? They weren’t always the saints that we make them out to be. BuzzFeed columnist Anne Helen Petersen is here to set the record straight with Scandals of Classic Hollywood. Pulling little-known gems from the archives of film history, Petersen reveals eyebrow-raising information.

Part biography, part cultural history, these stories cover the stuff that films are made of: love, sex, drugs, illegitimate children, illicit affairs, and botched cover-ups. But it's not all just tawdry gossip in the pages of this book. The stories are all contextualized within the boundaries of film, cultural, political, and gender history, making for a read that will inform as it entertains. Based on Petersen's popular column on the Hairpin, but featuring 100% new content, Scandals of Classic Hollywood is sensationalism made smart.

ONTD Original: The Dating Game - Who Should Ariana (Hypothetically) Rebound With?

$
0
0

Amid swirling rumours that ONTD faves Ariana Grande and Gummy Jon Cryer are either getting married on Saturday or are on the rocks, OP couldn't help but cast her mind back to that other famous Latina serial monogamist songstress, Jennifer Lopez, who called off her own wedding with #DearBen a mere 24 hours before the planned ceremony in 2003 before marrying longtime friend Marc Anthony five months after the breakup.

With the future of #Grandson unclear, let's look into ONTD's crystal ball and examine some of Ariana's possible future prospects, just in case.

MACHINE GUN KELLY
Seems like the obvious frontrunner given they were recently spotted grocery shopping in Syracuse.

PROS:
White rapper. Dirty looking. Tall (6’4”). Not averse to platinum-blonde hair. Demonstrates poor judgment in tattoos. Already friendly.
CONS:Clearly knows Pete. Although she appears to draw on a shallow dating pool, none of Ariana’s previous boyfriends are known to have been friendly with each other. Has recently also been spotted with Halsey, which brings me to...

G-(R)EAZY
ONTD boyfriend and alleged rapper Gerald Earl Gillum emerged as another likely candidate in our recent discussion.

PROS: White rapper. Dirty looking. Tall (6’4”). Not averse to platinum-blonde hair. Minimally tattooed, but already shares a couple tattoo with former girlfriend Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, so would likely be open to another. Has also already demonstrated poor judgment in public displays of affection (“Him and I”).
CONS: They don’t appear to know each other, although he does follow her on Instagram (she does not reciprocate). Is at least passingly friendly with Ariana’s ex Nathan Sykes (they put out a song together in 2016).

A MEMBER OF BROCKHAMPTON
Okay, hear me out. Back circa Yours Truly era, Ariana built up a weirdly dedicated following in various internet teen boy hangouts, probably mostly because of this gif but also because she was friendly with various members of Odd Future. Since OF proper don’t exist anymore, BROCKHAMPTON seem like a logical way for her to regain some internet credibility with a demographic that still actually buys (vinyl) records (from Urban Outfitters).

PROS: Various options. Rappers. Indie credibility. Cementing her status as Queen of the Gays.
CONS: Maybe skew a bit young for her? I don’t actually know their median age. Doesn’t appear that any of them know each other (yet).

MAC MILLER
In 2016, Mac’s ex-longterm girlfriend Nomi Leasure alleged that Mac and Ariana’s entire relationship was supposed to be a label-advised promo run for his album The Divine Feminine that went awry. Now they’ve been through a high-profile breakup, and she’s pushed back her album date so they release within a fortnight of each other. OP smells a rat.

PROS: White rapper, dirty looking, tattoos, etc. #Maciana still has a lot of fans, and if #Petener turned out to be a PR stunt after all, the ONTD post would be legendary. Cute Halloween costumes. Divine Feminine, God Is A Woman....
CONS:Their relationship was described as “toxic and scary” and they both seem pretty over it. Also OP feels they could probably both do better. Surprisingly not as tall as I thought? (5’7”).

RICKY VELEZ
It would be a dick move for sure, but Pete’s best friend, comedian Ricky Velez, appears to already be on Ari’s Instagram radar.

PROS:A pretty bad comedian, which she seems into. Shares a general look and vibe with Pete, which she also seems into. Has an entirely monochromatic Instagram account.
CONS: Again, it would be a dick move. Shares a first name with Ricky Alvarez, which would be confusing for any #Rickiana shippers left in the fandom. Might have a girlfriend or whatever, OP doesn’t know.

CALVIN HARRIS
If there’s one thing we can glean from Scooter Braun this era, it’s that Ariana is thirsty for an iconic, star-making hit, a service Calvin has already provided (or attempted to provide) for previous girlfriends. They’ve worked together already, but maybe it could stick this time. He seems to have a nobody girlfriend at the moment, but that’s never stoppedanyonebefore.

PROS: Could provide the career boost she needs to finally #BreakFree from the mid-tier pop girl pack. Already friendly. Really tall (6’6”!!!). Scottish, which could give her a fun new culture to appropriate, and would probably play well to her UK following.
CONS:Bit of an age gap (9 years; sound off in the comments ONTD!). He’s taken, but technically so is she, and so is...

JUSTIN BIEBER
The other preeminent couple of the Summer of #LoveIsLit2k18, Ariana’s labelmate recently got into his own quickie engagement with Hailey Baldwin. It’s not a stretch to imagine the wheels coming off both of these couplings, and if Selena isn’t emotionally available that week, maybe they could fall into each other’s arms for consolation and support.

PROS: Obviously already know each other. Potential pop power couple, however messy. Dirty looking, tattoos, a history of #BadDecisions and poor impulse control.
CONS:Ariana renounced Christianity in 2013 over her strongly-held position on LGBT rights, and we all know that Justin’s first love right now is Jesus. This could also spell mutiny aboard ship Scooter if (when, lbr) it went off the rails. Also, they don’t actually seem to like each other at all.

A HERETOFORE UNIDENTIFIED BACKUP DANCER
Although she’s been down this road before, it can never be ruled out for a pop girl. In Ariana’s case, it often seems like her backup dancers are her only real friends, and touring commitments for ɹǝuǝʇǝǝʍS could throw her and any potential candidates into close confines.

PROS: The icky power imbalance factor makes backup dancers a super quick rebound turnaround prospect. Also, backup dancers are usually in pretty good shape, which would be a trade-up from Ariana’s most recent efforts. Plus, her album about dancer Ricky Alvarez produced her best bops to date.
CONS: Aforementioned icky power imbalance factor. Also, she might have learned her lesson last time.

JACK ANTONOFF
What’s on the cards for #AG5? With the success of ɹǝuǝʇǝǝʍS uncertain, Ariana might be looking for a shakeup in her musical AND private lives, and that seems to be Jack Antonoff’s current lane. Also, since he absolutely isn’t dating Lorde, he’s available right now.

PROS: New directions for Ariana. Also he’s definitely single, guys!
CONS: They don’t seem to know each other, and while he doesn’t follow Ariana or Pete on Instagram, he and Cazzie David do follow one another, and he Liked the iconic “Been in Africa...” post. Not that tall (5’8”).

PETE DAVIDSON
I mean, I guess there's an outside chance.

ONTD ORIGINAL: Slow-burn tv romances

tumblr_owe0boYT4u1ri4cgfo1_540

So, this week's episode of Younger where we finally got the payoff we were waiting for (After 5 fucking seasons), got me thinking about other tv couples that we had to wait quite some time to get together. Obviously, I haven't watched all tv shows ever, and also the ones I watched I sometimes can hardly remember lmao but I decided to make a post to spark up a discussion. These are some of the couples people wanted to get together but had to wait a few seasons (in no particular order):

1. Charles & Liza - "Younger"

tumblr_pcrkppLISo1qisc9uo5_250tumblr_pcrkppLISo1qisc9uo9_250

They had a few moments even in season 1 where it was clear they had some sort of feelings for each other, but Liza was still discovering who she was outside of her marriage and was dating Josh while also lying about her age and wanting to succeed in publishing, so it wasn't the right time for them. Charles finally put his feelings on display when he kissed Liza at the end of season 2. After that, he tried to get her to go out with him but she was still caught up with Josh drama so that didn't happen. She continued dating Josh throughout season 3 but at the end she kissed Charles right when Josh was about to propose and that was the end of Josh/Liza. In season 4, Liza realized she actually loved Charles but then his ex wife came into the picture and Liza tried to get them back together for the sake of their kids, but Charles wasn't having that shit, he knew he wanted Liza and at the beginning of season 5 he told his ex wife that he wasn't interested in getting back together. But then he found out that Liza was lying about her age so we got half a season of him being mad and bitchy only to realize he still loved her and understand why she lied which led to them finally getting together.

2. Maxwell & Fran - "The Nanny"

tumblr_paebjhEhYW1qhphz2o6_r2_250tumblr_paebjhEhYW1qhphz2o7_r1_250

This was one of the slowest burns possible. Since season 1 it was obvious both Fran and Maxwell liked each other but Maxwell couldn't make a move. Then later on they shared some kisses, Maxwell saying I love you and taking it back, Fran constantly reminding him of that fact, eeeveryone around them was rooting for Maxwell to finally make up his mind which he did after seasons and seasons of driving everyone crazy. The heads of the network even demanded for Max and Fran to get married during the show's run or they'd cancel the show lmao.

3. Niles & Cece- "The Nanny"

tumblr_pcpyb84SDG1qbrajro1_250tumblr_pcpyb84SDG1qbrajro2_250

It was obvious from the first time they insulted each other, these two trolls would end up together. They used their insults as flirtation and finally in the last season they got together.

4. Niles &  Daphne - "Fraiser"

tumblr_oexjauTVM71qg4yfgo7_r1_250tumblr_oexjauTVM71qg4yfgo8_r2_250

Niles was constantly pining for Daphne, ever since he saw her for the first time, while Daphne was completely oblivious to his thirst. It took her a bunch of seasons to realize that she also had feelings for Niles. Let me tell you, I watched this show for the first time last year and his pining got so fucking annoying because I knew they'd get together, I was only wondering when it would happen, and boy did I have to wait, jfc...The awkward but lovable creep got under Daphne's skin I guess.

5. Jake & Amy - "Brooklyn Nine Nine"

tumblr_pc848vg46r1r7xla0o4_250tumblr_pc848vg46r1r7xla0o7_250

I love it when tv writers know what their story is and where it will go and they don't let crazy fans dictate the way they write their show and their couples. Jake & Amy had a distracting childish rivalry that evolved into a distracting childish courtship and ended with a distracting childish marriage and it's so beautifully written which is rare these days.

6. Oliver & Felicity - "Arrow"

tumblr_pay67uVqFc1u016aeo4_400tumblr_pay67uVqFc1u016aeo5_400

I know people here genuinely hate this couple, and their fandom really ruins stuff for everybody, but if you look at this romance and forget about all the fandom drama and that one disastrous season, this story could have really worked. They began as friends, had great banter and chemistry (which is hard considering how wooden Oliver is), Felicity had a little crush on Oliver, but Oliver didn't want to be in a real relationship which could result in Felicity getting hurt, Felicity tried to get over her crush and date another hot dude, but then Oliver realized his feelings and they got together (the way they got together was cringe-worthy and not believable but the ending result was okay). I don't think the slow-burn in this case was intentional, i think they just got lucky and only realized later on that they basically wrote it as a slow burn of some sort and just ran with it and hoped for the best.

7. Barry & Iris - "The Flash"
tumblr_p58ft1yI101qe4wcyo2_r1_250tumblr_p58ft1yI101qe4wcyo6_250

Now this was a super cute romance that was planned from the start. Barry had a huge crush on Iris while they were kids and his crush grew over the years but he was really awkward and couldn't admit it but eventually he did it and now they're married. (i stopped watching the show but I assume they're still together lmao)

8. Chidi & Eleanor - "The Good Place"

tumblr_pcnu1bzaKZ1rsc3z0o4_400tumblr_pcnu1bzaKZ1rsc3z0o8_400

Eleanor was annoyed by Chidi at first but then she grew to like him but there were always some obstacles that didn't let them be together. Season 2 ended with Chidi finally making up his mind and kissing Eleanor.

9. Luke & Lorelai- "The Gilmore Girls"

tumblr_pbu9y0E11s1qi8gkno1_400tumblr_pbu9y0E11s1qi8gkno7_400

It took them 5 seasons to finally turn the friendship into romance but they finally did it in the end. I cannot remember the details, I just remember it being exhausting as fuck.

10. Schmidt & Cece- "The New Girl"

tumblr_ovmkw6w5bL1qisc9uo1_400tumblr_ovmkw6w5bL1qisc9uo4_400

It was fun to watch them bicker and sneak around, but then Schmidt had to ruin it with dating Cece and his ex at the same time, but thankfully the show managed to turn it back around later and remind us why we liked the pairing in the first place.

11. Jane & Rafael - "Jane The Virgin"
tumblr_p9s7166NuG1wrnev5o5_400tumblr_p9s7166NuG1wrnev5o6_400

So Jane had a crush on Rafael but that crush wasn't returned, then she met Michael and they got engaged, but then she got accientally inseminated with Rafael's sperm and gave birth to a son, during that time she fell for Rafael because Michael was having a hard time accepting that Jane was having another guy's baby...But then she and Rafael ended things and she got back with Michael while Rafael was pining for her, and she and Michael got married but then he died, and she was grieving and thought she'd never find love again but then she developed a friendship with Rafael and started pining for him while he was with other women and after all of that shit, they finally rediscovered their love. That of course until Michael showed up in their bedroom.

These are some of the examples of the top of my head, tell me more in the comments and I'll add them to the post! Please don't be rude :)

ℙ𝕠𝕟𝕪𝕥𝕒𝕚𝕝 𝕄𝕠𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕥𝕤 𝕚𝕟 ℙ𝕠𝕡 (𝕆ℕ𝕋𝔻 𝕆𝕣𝕚𝕘𝕚𝕟𝕒𝕝)

You can whip it side to side
You can pull it real, real tight
You can take it down tonight
'Cause I know it's what you like

This post is dedicated to the hairstyle our pop faves can be seen with on or off stage (good luck with booking that stage u speak of). Since she has her own post, I won't mention the woman currently in critical dickmatized condition.

Here's a look at our fav female performers rocking that Ponytail.mp3

Paper Magazine - Rihanna

The only nonmusical-related moment here, but nonetheless a slay with beauty guru and fashion mogul Rihanna rocking this lavender hair for Paper Magazine.

'No Mythologies to Follow' Era - MØ

Indie pop turned semi mainstream pop singer donned the ponytail braid often during the first few years of her career - possibly an homage to her #1 inspo Sporty Spice?

"Honey" Mariah Carey

The elusive chanteuse and occasional minimal danseuse Mariah was partially emancipated for "Honey". This high pony look might have been accused of influencing certain up and coming artists who had Mariah's name in the blueprint early in the career.

"Scream and Shout" - Britney Spears

I don't know what iron they were striking when Will.I.Am and Britney decided to do this tragic remix of an already tragic song. The presence of Britney's ponytail almost made up for it.

"Not Such An Innocent Girl" - Victoria Beckham

The most important member of the best selling girl group of all time Victoria Beckham gave us this badass look with a spiked updo, representing yin.

And when she was not sporting her iconic bob during the Spice Girls, the ponytail was her next go-to hairstyle:

Mel B was having fun wit it too

"Born This Way" - Lady Gaga

Express Yourself 2.0 was a pivotal moment in Gaga's career, and she managed to whip her side ponytail at any chance she got during that #ambitious era. She cited Willow Smith as inspo for the stage performance and Whitney Houston for the song.

#Throwback

"Not Myself Tonight" - Christina Aguilera

The liberation icon of our generation Legend X delivered a lot of looks for the infamous lead of passion project Bionic, including this high pony look with antenna lashes, glitter lips, and a croissant bang.

"Free" - Natalia Kills

"Free" by most hated woman in pop Natalia Kills aka Teddy Sinclair had a second scrapped music video due to the complex editing, with the officially released one with the Will.I.Am remix.

Teddy served ponytails for the gods circa 2011-2013 before being renowned for her viral Lord Farquaad 'do.

HonTorable mentions:

State of the World Tour Era - Janet Jackson

Unbreakable legend Janet Jackson has been in this hairstyle since her divorce, and since found a new attitude. #MadeForNow featuring D*ddy Y*nkee is coming.

Blonde Ambition World Tour - Madonna

One of the most iconic moments and looks in pop from Madonna, the Blonde Ambition tour is one of few reasons why lip syncing is excusable due to the high energy and sharp choreo.

"Work" - Ciara

Before Fifth Harmony, Ciara'worked' this construction-themed music video and whipped that pony for her life with the best ballroom moves.

GIT SOM, GIT SOM

Tidal X 1015 - Beyonce

Beyonce performed at an event for small family-owned business venture Tidal with this epic braid that did choreo on its own.

Let's not forget when she felt haself a lil TOO much and literally had a few of her earrings ripped from her ear and bled.

-Ignored Halloween films 3-6 and saw the return of Jamie Lee Curtin who had been absent from the franchise since 1981.

-Jamie was the one who initiated her return and was a major driving factor in getting the film made.

-They hated the Michael mask they used to film with and ended up spending $3million in reshoots with a new mask that was more their liking.

-This film continuity continued Laurie/Michael being sister/brother and Laurie having a son compared to the new Halloween movie that will see only follow the first film and thus nixing the sibling connection and giving Laurie and daughter and granddaughter in place of a son.

-Made $55 million on a $17 million dollar budget.

-THe film itself was set 20years after the first film and helped celebrate the franchises 20th anniversary.

• Boone is a conservative Republican, and has campaigned and endorsed Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, and Mitt Romney
• Boone considered running for office on a pro-war platform in 1968
Was a vocal supporter of the Vietnam War and was very critical about Democrats who opposed the Iraq War, and suggested that opponents of the war and Bush (like the Dixie Chicks) were unpatriotic and did not "respect their elders"
Is homophobic and compared gay rights protests and demonstrations to terrorism, and claimed unless they were checked, "hedonistic, irresponsible, blindly selfish goals and tactics of homegrown sexual jihadists will escalate into acts vile, violent and destructive"
Compared liberalism to cancer
• Is pro-Israel and defended Mel Gibson after the actor was recorded going on a vicious anti-Semitic tirade after he was being arrested for drunk driving
Participated in the racist claims that Barack Obama was ineligible to serve as president because he was Muslim and didn't celebrate Christian holidays, despite the fact that Obama and his administration prepared and hosted Christmas events for military personnel and groups of children
• In 2011 Boone received a lifetime achievement award at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC)
• Devoutly religious and called the scientific theory of evolution "absurd" and "nonsensical"

4. Gary Cooper (1901-1961)

• Was a conservative Republican like his father, and voted for Calvin Coolidge in 1924 and Herbert Hoover in 1928 and 1932
• During the 1944 presidential election, Cooper heavily campaigned for Thomas Dewey, and because his activities were unpopular with the general public the studio later told him to stop antagonizing fans who didn't share his political views
• Cooper was a founding member of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals (MPA), which was a very conservative and traditional organization
Appeared as a "friendly witness" before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) in 1947, though he avoided naming anyone he suspected of having communist sympathies or ties in Hollywood and later said he regretted having been a witness
• Was the last American movie star to visit Nazi Germany before the outbreak of World War II; he also stated that MGM's Three Comrades (1938), a cautiously anti-Nazi film, should not have been made
Cooper said it was "very un-American" to suggest that the Constitution was out of date and that Congress was unnecessary
• Had an audience with Pope Pius XII in Rome, became more serious about faith and began attending church regularly; he was baptized as a Roman Catholic in 1959 How typical of an aging/dying man, who allegedly hit a woman and had numerous affairs with actresses like Ingrid Bergman, Clara Bow, Marlene Dietrich, Carole Lombard, and Lupe Velez, to seek religion while facing his own mortality but I digress
• Tragic hairline

5. Walt Disney (1901-1966)

• Disney was a supporter of the Democratic Party (likely influenced by his father who was quite liberal) until the 1940 presidential election
• Disney was a founding member of the anti-Semitic and anti-Communist MPA
• In 1947, Disney served as a "friendly witness" before the HUAC

6. Clark Gable (1901-1960)

• Disliked Gone with the Wind (1939), where he played Rhett Butler because he said it was "a woman's picture"
• Following the death of Lombard in 1942, Gable enlisted in the army to honor her, as she had been killed in a plane crash while on tour selling war bonds
Gable had a gun collection valued at $500,000 that was kept in a special gun room in his house
Gable managed to vote for Richard Nixon by mail in 1960 a few days before his death from a severe coronary thrombosis (blood clot inside a blood vessel of the heart)

7. Charlton Heston (1923-2008)

• Despite being a supporter of Democratic politicians (Adlai Stevenson, John F. Kennedy) and civil rights in the 1960s, Heston became a conservative Republican as he aged (campaigned for Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and George W. Bush, and supported Richard Nixon in 1972)
• Was pro-life and gave the introduction to Eclipse of Reason (1987), an anti-abortion documentary
Although he discussed gun control in 1968, he later became the president and spokesman of the National Rifle Association of America (NRA) from 1998 until 2003; in Michael Moore's 2002 film Bowling for Columbine, Moore criticized an 1999 NRA meeting that took place in Denver, Colorado shortly after the Columbine high school massacre as thoughtless and after being questioned as to why he thought gun-related violence was much higher in the US, Heston replied: "we have probably more mixed ethnicity"
Believed in reverse-racism: complained that the Actors' Equity Association's refusal to allow a white actor to play a Eurasian role in Miss Saigon was "obscenely racist"
Believed in Rachel Dolezal's delusionaltheory of transracial identity: after being initiated by blood into the Miniconjou Lakota Nation while filming The Savage (1952), he said that although he had no American Indian heritage, he believed he was "Native American" because he didn't want the term to be referred exclusively to American Indians

8. Hedda Hopper (1885-1966)

• Hopper was a fervent Republican and was a guest to numerous conservative rallies
Hopper was a driving force behind the Hollywood blacklist and was a leading member of the MPA
After her career as an actress failed dwindled, Hopper became a columnist and would spread vitriol to people she believed were uncouth and un-American
• Hopper successfully spearheaded the blacklist of Ingrid Bergman, who became pregnant by a married man out of wedlock, and cooperated with the FBI to destabilize Charlie Chaplin's career due to his Communist sympathies and because he remained a British citizen and did not try to become a US citizen

• Due to her extreme conservatism, many people in Hollywood privately called her a Nazi, and when this was brought up to her she cried and said, "All I've ever tried to be is a good American"

9. Ronald Reagan (1911-2004)

• Reagan was actually a liberal Democrat in the 1940s but by the time John F. Kennedy became the president in 1960, Reagan was already turning into a right-wing Republican
• Reagan's first wife from 1940 to 1949, Jane Wyman, was a conservative Republican and she claimed that their political differences were a reason for their divorce
• Served as Governor of California from 1967 to 1975 and US President from 1981 to 1989
During his presidency, Reagan spurred the War on Drugs, increased military spending, repeatedly supplied weapons to US enemies (Iraq, Iran, Nicaraguan rebels, etc.), mostly ignored the HIV/AIDS crisis, and more
Literally said: "Trees cause more pollution than automobiles"
• Helped pave the way for other celebrities to go into politics regardless of political experience
• Mediocre actor

10. Jane Russell (1921-2011)

• Russell was a prominent supporter of the Republican Party and even attended Dwight Eisenhower's inauguration
• Sided publicly with an industry panel that wanted to remove "provocative" scenes in one of her movies
Was pro-life and opposed abortion in any circumstance, including rape and incest
• Was a supporter of Iraq War
• Became a born-again Christian before the term was even coined, Russell regularly hosted Bible study at her home
Literally said, "I always say I'm a mean-spirited, narrow-minded, right-wing, conservative Christian . . . I am not politically correct" but also "not a racist"

11. Frank Sinatra (1915-1998)

A liberal Democrat who was concerned about "poor people" and outspoken about racism, Sinatra grew conservative with age
• Admired John F. Kennedy and would party and womanize with him when Kennedy visited Hollywood and Las Vegas but was snubbed after Kennedy decided not to stay with Sinatra while visiting California due to the revelations of Sinatra's ties to organized crime with the mafia
Sinatra became less vocal about racial issues after changing his political affiliation in 1970
• Sinatra endorsed Ronald Reagan (donating $4 million to his campaign) and Richard Nixon
• Was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985 by Reagan

12. Barbara Stanwyck (1907-1990)

• Was a staunch conservative Republican
Opposed Franklin D. Roosevelt's presidency because she believed that since she managed to become a success despite her disadvantaged background, others should be able to do so without government assistance or intervention
• Became an early member of the MPA in 1944
• Publicly supported HUAC's investigations
• Fan of Ayn Rand and persuaded Warner Bros. to purchase the rights to The Fountainhead before it became a best-seller

13. James Stewart (1908-1997)

• Was a loyal conservative Republican, and supported and campaigned for Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan
• Stewart was the first movie star to enter the service for World War II, though he did not discuss his time in the military due to his traumatic experiences he had in killing other people and watching friends die
Supported the Vietnam War and after his adopted stepson was killed in action in Vietnam, Stewart maintained that he did not die in vain
• Despised Vietnam War draft dodgers and called them "cowards"
• In 1985, Stewart was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by his friend Ronald Reagan
• Along with actors Charlton Heston, Kirk Douglas, and Gregory Peck, Stewart issued a statement calling for support of President Lyndon Johnson's Gun Control Act of 1968 after US Senator Robert F. Kennedy's assassination
Although they had different political views, Stewart was close friends with actor Henry Fonda, and after a fistfight during a political argument they never discussed politics again to maintain their friendship
• Tragic hairline, later wore toupees by the early 1950s

14. Shirley Temple (1928-2014)

Was a conservative Republican and a vocal supporter of the Vietnam War, and during her failed run for Congress she argued that the US needed to send more troops to Southeast Asia
• Temple became involved in foreign affairs after her run for Congress, and was appointed as a delegate to the 24th United Nations General Assembly (1969) by President Richard Nixon, the US Ambassador to Ghana (1974-1976) by President Gerald Ford, the first female Chief of Protocol of the US (1976-1977) by President Jimmy Carter, and the US Ambassador to Czechoslovakia (1989-1992) by George H. W. Bush
• While serving as the US Ambassador to Czechoslovakia, Temple witnessed important moments in the country's fight against Communism: she was in Prague in August 1968 the day Soviet-backed forces invaded, and while stranded on a hotel roof she witnessed an unarmed woman gunned down on the streets by Soviet forces

15. Gene Tierney (1920-1991)

• Tierney was a lifelong conservative Republican and was a supporter of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan in particular
Had a love affair in the 1940s with future president John F. Kennedy, who broke it off because of his political ambitions
Despite voting for Richard Nixon, Tierney did send a congratulatory note to Kennedy for his victory in the 1960 presidential race

16. John Wayne (1907-1979)

• Was a vocal and prominent conservative Republican for the majority of his life, though he claims he considered himself to be a socialist in his first year of college, described himself as liberal during his younger years in Hollywood, voted for Franklin Roosevelt in the 1936 presidential election, and differed with Republican Party over the Panama Canal issue
• Took part in creating the conservative MPA in 1944, and was elected as the organization's president in 1949
Was asked to run for national office in 1968 by wealthy Texas Republican Party backers despite having no previous political experience but declined because he believed the public would never seriously consider an actor in the White House
• Actively supported Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan
• Spoke on opening day at the 1968 Republican National Convention
Was racist, classist, and homophobic, and literally said: "I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility" and "I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from [the Native Americans] . . . There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves."
• Aged poorly

Honorable Mentions
Although there was a fair share of conservative ladies in old Hollywood, it probably comes to absolutely no one's surprise that it was much easier to find male conservatives. So in an effort to keep the list relatively even, I narrowed it down to some of the more vocally conservative stars. Some honorable mentions: June Allyson, James Cagney, Claudette Colbert, Bing Crosby, Alain Delon, Betty Grable, Cary Grant, Tippi Hedren, Steve McQueen, Ethel Merman, Robert Mitchum, Laurence Olivier, Ginger Rogers, Cesar Romero, Mickey Rooney, and Jane Wyman.

• June Allyson and her husband Dick Powell successfully persuaded Ronald Reagan to switch political parties in 1962
• James Cagney, who became more conservative as he aged, once said he regarded his move away from liberal politics as "a totally natural reaction once I began to see undisciplined elements in our country stimulating a breakdown of our system . . . Those functionless creatures, the hippies . . . just didn't appear out of a vacuum"
• In her 2016 memoir, Tippi Hedren wrote that Donald Trump is a celebrity friend
• Ethel Merman was a frequent guest at the Eisenhower White House and has also said, "Eisenhower was my war hero and the President I admire and respect the most"
• Mickey Rooney was a staunch conservative Republican but later in life he claimed he supported the man and not the party; he said he was proud of Barack Obama and his policies

• Despite their divorce, Jane Wyman voted for her ex-husband Ronald Reagan in the 1980 and 1984 presidential elections

This week’s creepy post explores what’s new in paranormal pop culture and more! Curated by myself and loglady!

BOOKS & COMICS
New Beasts of Burdenminiseries; Navajo artist Shaun Beyale discusses his comic, Ayla, The Monster Slayer; and Sharlene Teo talks her debut novel, Ponti, which was inspired by Malaysian mythology.
COMICS

  • Beasts of Burden is back with a new miniseries, which will go on sale on August 22nd.

  • Synopsis from the source:

  • A heroic pack of canines known as the Wise Dogs set off on a mission to clean up a Pennsylvania corridor plagued by seemingly unrelated occult disturbances that include a fire salamander and a horde of mutant lurkers. A link is found among the various disturbances, leading our heroes to a mountain village inhabited by a survivalist witch-cult who have discovered the existence of a ”Blood Lure” attracting occult forces, creatures, and many more terrors to Burden Hill!

  • Writer: Evan Dorkin

  • Artist: Benjamin Dewey

  • Cover Artist: Benjamin Dewey; Rafael Albuquerque

  • Upcoming comic book Ayla, The Monster Slayer by Navajo artist Shaun Beyale is about Native people living in a post-apocalyptic world.

  • Beyale wanted to create contemporary characters; he says we don’t see many Native characters in post-apocalyptic media, and that “[a]s indigenous people, we’re living in a post-apocalyptic world right now.”

  • On his characters and Native stereotypes: “Indigenous women are always portrayed in a more derogatory way, they’re not really shown to have value. But traditional Navajo society was a matrilineal society, the women were the strongest and they had a lot of the power. For me, I wanted to make my main character be a strong, indigenous female.”

  • The comic takes place in New Mexico, where Beyale is from, and will feature traditional Navajo monsters as well as cryptids like Bigfoot.

  • Singaporean author Sharlene Teo's debut novel, Ponti, explores the Malaysian myth of pontianak, which is a "woman who dies in childbirth, and comes back to haunt neighbourhoods."

  • Teo explains: “I was very interested in how this ghost enters the domestic space. Young girls are scared of her, men are scared of her. But she’s basically a young woman who’s a predator. I thought that was an interesting subversion.”

  • On the horror genre, Teo says: "I think horror is the genre that is most reflective of ‘contemporary now’, because we live in a strange horror show now." However, Ponti is not horror, and instead focuses on the "female experience in an Asian setting", exploring loneliness and tragedy.

  • Ponti was released on April 19th, check it out on Goodreads!

SERIES & SHORTS

"A Harlem 9-year-old takes on racism and gentrification in the trailer for sci-fi/drama series" in the upcoming Little Apple, and Apple casts its sci-fi drama series, See.

  • Official synopsis:Little Apple is a contemporary coming of age story about a young Harlem girl finding her voice in a society that often silences women and people of color. The first season features 6 episodes exploring themes of: gentrification, the erasure of Native Peoples, Black feminism, microaggressions, Black Girl Magic and more."

  • Little Apple is played by Milan Williams.

  • The show was filmed in Harlem and its executive producers, Riley S. Wilson and Lisa Cortés, are both Harlem residents. Wilson was interviewed for the website Shadow and Act., discussing, among other things:

  • Why they chose to set the series in Harlem: “What's been happening in Harlem is somewhat of a microcosm of what's been happening all over the country. Cities, neighborhoods, communities, people are debating their identity. Harlem is encountering the same debate; the community is in flux and so is Little Apple”;

  • What he hopes viewers will gain from the series:“I hope viewers are empowered to speak truth to power, to move against complicity and to understand that it is possible (and somewhat imperative) to engage with youth about what's happening around the country.”

  • See will be an “eight-episode, sci-fi series takes place in a future where humanity has lost the ability to perceive the world with sight”

  • Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) is writing; Francis Lawrence is directing

  • The cast now includes Yadira Guevara-Prip, Nesta Cooper, Jason Momoa and Alfre Woodard

TELEVISION
AMC is developing a series based on the short stories of Ken Liu.

  • Looks like author and translator Ken Liu’s vast short story collection - he’s written over 100 since 2002 - will be the inspiration behind a possible upcoming series at AMC called Pantheon.

  • Craig Silverstein (Turn) will serve as showrunner, producer, and writer.

  • “If it’s produced, Pantheon will be an animated show ‘based on a series of short stories by [Liu] about uploaded intelligence.’”

  • On September 4th, a special-edition 25th anniversary Blu-Ray will be released.

  • Best Buy will also be releasing an exclusive Steelbook, based on the spell book from the film.

True crime time...

  • Check out this throwback to the news coverage after Ron DeFeo, Jr, killed his parents in the now infamous Amityville house.

  • The murders happened in 1974, and the Lutz family moved in 13 months later, after the house sat on the market. After moving in, the Lutz family claimed to experience paranormal activity.

  • Their experiences lead to the 1977 controversial nonfiction book, The Amityville Horror by Jay Anson, which became the basis for the (many) Amityville Horror films.

Thinkpiece...

  • The author of the article talks about growing up with mental illness (depression and OCD) and how horror helped him escape from the real horrors of his life, but how the genre misrepresents mental illness as well as perpetuate stigma around it.

  • Usually mental illness is depicted in horror as a plot device to provide context to a villainous character.

  • One prominent example being Psycho, using Dissociative Personality Disorder to depict a violent antagonist, despite there being no major evidence of the disorder leading to violent behavior.

  • ”It’s only in recent years that horror films have begun to handle the subject with more thoughtfulness, using well-crafted stories and character representation.”

  • The author lists Meloncholia, The Babadook, and Hereditary as examples of films moving in the right direction in terms of mental illness representation.

  • Please read the entire article at the source!!
