Many people are familiar with VH1’s classic trashy reality shows of the 2000’s. But there is one reality show that some people have never heard of, because it was derailed by a terrible murder: 2009’s Megan Wants A Millionaire.

One of the show’s contestants murdered his girlfriend, traumatized the show’s star, and derailed a golden era of reality television.

How The Show Started
Megan Hauserman graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a degree in accounting, and won season 3 of the reality show Beauty and the Geek. But her true dream was to be a “top of the line trophy wife.”

In 2008, she appeared on Rock of Love with Bret Michaels. She then went on Rock of Love: Charm School and I Love Money and became reality TV gold. VH1 decided to give her own show in which she is wooed by several rich guys. It was blatant golddigging starring Megan, and it was sure to be a hit.

The Casting Process
VH1 began casting single men who had net worths over $1,000,000. Megan said that she wanted "a mature guy that can handle me and doesn't cry" and said, "He doesn't have to be rich; he has to be stable."(Um…)

Taping begins in February 2009. One of the contestants was Ryan Alexander Jenkins, a real estate developer. His net worth was $2.5 million. Megan nicknamed him “Smooth Operator.”

March 16, 2009
After Megan eliminated him from the show, Ryan met and fell in love with
a woman named Jasmine Fiore.

Jasmine Fiore was born in Santa Cruz, California. She moved to Las Vegas and became a swimsuit model. She had also acquired her real estate license and dreamed of opening her own gym.

March 16, 2009
48 hours after they meet, Ryan and Jasmine get married at The Little White Wedding Chapel. Jamine’s mother later claimed that her daughter annulled the marriage in May 2009, but there is no record of this.

 photo jenkinsJasmine_1467636c_zps1wqlhbxb.jpg

In June 2009, Ryan was charged with battery constituting domestic violence for hitting Fiore and knocking her into a swimming pool. He and Fiore reconciled shortly after.

August 2, 2009
The first episode of Megan Wants A Millionaire debuts. Here is a rare trailer:

August 13, 2009
Jenkins and Fiore check into a hotel in San Diego for a poker tournament. The pair left for a nightclub around 2:30 a.m., but Ryan returned to the hotel alone and Jasmine was never again seen alive.

August 15, 2009
Around 7 a.m., someone discovered a naked, beaten, and dismembered female body inside a suitcase in a dumpster in an alley. The fingers and teeth had been removed.

Around 9 P.M., Ryan reports Jasmine missing. He said that she had left to run errands and never returned.

August 16, 2009
The third —- and ultimately final-— episode of Megan Wants A Millionaire airs.

August 18, 2009
The body was beaten so badly that police had to identify it through the serial numbers on the breast implants. It is Jasmine Fiore.

August 19-22, 2009
Ryan Jenkins is charged with Jasmine’s murder. He evades police and attempts to flee to Canada by speedboat.

Out of respect for Jasmine’s family, VH1 pulls Megan Wants A Millionaire from the air indefinitely. Megan Hauserman says that she was so terrified that Ryan would come to find her and kill her that she could not leave her apartment building.

Despite popular belief, Ryan Jenkins did not win MWAM. A contestant revealed on Twitter that Ryan placed third. The runner-up was Sharay Hayes, worth $3.1 million, and the winner was TJ Diab, worth $6/5 million.

However, Ryan Jenkins did apparently win Season 3 of I Love Money, which VH1 also cancelled.

Winner TJ Diab

August 23, 2009
Ryan Jenkins checks into a motel in British Columbia and hangs himself with a belt. VH1 permanently cancels the show.

It turns out that VH1 producers had run a background check on Jenkins, but the firm that performed the background check only looked at his American criminal record. Jenkins had assaulted a woman in Calgary, Alberta, in 2007. VH1 producers sued the firm for failing to find and disclose this, saying that they never would have cast him had they known.

The Fallout
The media scandal has overshadowed the biggest tragedy: Jasmine’s death. Jasmine’s and Ryan’s families were both devastated by the violent crime.
 photo jasmine ontd_zpsodvvetvc.jpg

Megan sat down for an in-depth interview with Aphrodite Jones. She says that Ryan was obsessed with her and her friends warned her that he was lying. His stories changed depending on who he was talking to. He lied about how much money he had. She was horrified about the crime and feared for her life.

Megan has pretty much disappeared from reality TV, and the only social media I could find was a private Facebook. In 2010, she was arrested for DUI.

But despite the tragedy, her life turned out happily: She got married to Derren Garber, a professional golfer and business owner, and gave birth to their son Derren Jr. in 2014.

ONTD Original: Memorable Movie Bikinis

$

In July 1946 Parisian automotive engineer and designer Louis Réard introduced the bikini. The skimpy design was very risqué at the time because it exposed the wearer's navel and much of her butt. No runway model would wear it, so he hired a stripper to model it at a review of swimsuit fashions. The swimsuit was named after the Bikini Atoll, where the first public test of a nuclear bomb had taken place only days before.

Due to the controversy over its design, the bikini was accepted very slowly by the public. It gained increased acceptance as women like Brigitte Bardot, Raquel Welch, and Ursula Andress wore them in movies and were photographed while wearing them on public beaches.

Ursula Andress wore a bikini for this iconic scene in the 1962 film Dr. No. The scene was later recreated 40 years later by Halle Berry in Die Another Day

Carrie Fisher’s metal bikini in Return of the Jedi spawned countless coseplays at hundreds of SciFi conventions ever since the movie debuted in 1983.

Phoebe Cates in her red bikini might be the best known thing from the 1982 film Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Note; clip is a little bit NSFW.

Demi Moore was 41 in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle proving that if you have enough confidence you can wear a bikini at any age.

ONTD, do you wear a bikini at the beach or pool?

ONTD Original: Emmy Nominations 2018 Snubs and Surprises

$

0

The Emmy nominations were announced earlier today and with them came some glaring snubs and some surprise nominations.

SNUBS

Mandy Moore (This is Us)
Mandy Moore was ignored again this year by the Emmy voters for her performance in NBC drama "This is Us". While Moore was heavily praised for her heartbreaking performance in the Superbowl episode, Emmy voters showed her no love for the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category, the show got plenty of love overall; her fellow co-stars Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown did get nominated in the lead actor category, Gerald McRaney and Ron Cephas Jones got nominations in the guest actor category, and the show also got a nomination in the Outstanding Drama category.

Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor)
Ignored for his brilliant performance in Bates Motel for 5 years in a row, Freddie Highmore was snubbed once again for his portrayal of autistic Dr. Shaun Murphy in the ABC drama.
Whose slot did he deserve: Jason Bateman (Ozark)

Rita Moreno (One Day at a Time)
The EGOT winner's hilarious portrayal of flamboyant and larger than life cuban mother and grandmother Lydia Margarita del Carmen Inclán Maribona Leyte-Vidal de Riera was criminally ignored by the Emmy voters for a 2nd time in a row in the supporting actress in a Comedy series and so was the critically acclaimed reboot of the original "One Day at a Time".
Whose slot did she deserve: Any of the SNL performers (those shouldn't even be in that category!)

Killing Eve
The thrilling and addictive drama from Phoebe Waller-Bridge's mind quickly became favorite among critics and fans alike and deserved a nomination in OP's opinion. At least Sandra Oh, who plays the titular character got a nomination in the lead actress category, becoming the first actress of Asian descent to do so, tho fellow lead actress Jodie Comer fell through the cracks due to the category being to stacked
Whose slot did it deserve: Stranger Things

Will and Grace
The critically acclaimed revival, which has already been renewed for 2 more seasons, didn't get much love from the Emmy voters, being snubbed in the outstanding comedy category, with the voters choosing to side with "Curb Your Enthusiasm" revival instead. Eric McCormick and Debra Messing were similarly ignored in the lead actor/actress categories, and so was Sean Hayes for a supporting role, despite being the top pick to be nominated and WIN by GoldDerby users. Megan Mullally did continue her streak of getting nominated in the supporting actress category, which she has done 7 times before and winning twice.

Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat)
I know it's never gonna happen but it doesn't make me any less mad how the voters avoid her year after year after year. She's long overdue a nomination in the lead actress in a comedy series category.

Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington (Game of Thrones)
For the first time, Emilia Clarke and Kit Harrington decided to compete in the lead actor/actress in a drama series categories, after being nominated for their performance in Game of Thrones where they both had been nominated in the supporting category. This didn't turn out to be a good idea, tho. Their co-stars Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage (record 7th nomination) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau did get nominated in the supporting categories, tho, with the show also expectedly getting a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series.

Twin Peaks
The revival, 25 years in the making, was considered a shoo-in for nominations in the limited series categories but was completely shutout. David Lynch did 2 nominations for writing and directing, though.

SURPRISES

Ted Danson (The Good Place) for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Issa Rae (Insecure) for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Matt Smith (The Crown) for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Zazie Beets (Atlanta) for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Kenan Thomas (Saturday Night Live) for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Ed Harris (Westworld) for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
The Alienist for Outstanding Limited Series
Maya Rudoplph (The Good Place) for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

𝙾𝙽𝚃𝙳 𝙾𝚛𝚒𝚐𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚕:
𝙵𝚊𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚊𝚋𝚕𝚎 𝙶𝚒𝚛𝚕 𝙶𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚜 𝚘𝚏 𝙰𝚗𝚒𝚖𝚊𝚝𝚎𝚍 𝚃𝚅

With purported rumors of an animated Spice Girls movie circling around, I wanted to make a post of animated girl gangs we already know because some of them are actually interesting character design-wise. And as a gay, it's a thing to be fascinated by female design in general. Maybe this could also be a post for Halloween cosplay ideas too? #letsgetspoopy#pumpkinspiceseasoniscoming. This list of 8 is limited down to groups with at least three or more members who are regularly seen together. And we'll see if they are part of the limited wardrobe trope.

𝟾. 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙰𝚜𝚑𝚕𝚎𝚢'𝚜 (𝚁𝚎𝚌𝚎𝚜𝚜)

Who: Mean girls of Third Street School comprising of Ashleys A., B., Q., and T. They have a color associated with them - pink, yellow, blue, and green respectively.
Style: Wear similar outfits consisting of knee high socks, a skirt, and a button down/cardigan/sweater/blazer variation (very Clueless).
Limited wardrobe Yes, for the most part

𝟽. 𝙲𝚊𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚎 𝙵𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚜𝚔𝚢'𝚜 𝙵𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚜 (𝙰𝚛𝚝𝚑𝚞𝚛)

Who: Muffy thought she was mature enough to hang out with Catherine's friends only to find out otherwise.
Style: Miss Catherine came stuntin in a new look styled by Muffy wearing a floral crop top and a matching belt, red bell bottoms, and teal shoes. Debi has a preppy school girl look, while Angi and Tami are more casual - Tami in an a sea-foam green outfit and Angi rocking a simple camisole with a skirt.
Limited wardrobe? Yes

𝟼. 𝙷𝚎𝚡 𝙶𝚒𝚛𝚕𝚜 (𝚂𝚌𝚘𝚘𝚋𝚢 𝙳𝚘𝚘)

Who: Wiccans of a goth rock band with Thorn as lead singer and guitarist, Dusk on drums, and Luna as keyboardist.
Style: All wear dark themed clothing which looks like would be made out of velvet. I'd describe them to be as if you'd mash up the Sanderson Sisters of Hocus Pocus with 80's goth and punk.
Limited wardrobe? Yes, for the most part

Let's not forget mother Daphne who snatched us in this rock goddess momenT, Shirley Manson is quaking:

𝟻. 𝙿𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚌𝚎𝚜𝚜 𝙰𝚣𝚞𝚕𝚊, 𝙼𝚊𝚒, 𝚃𝚢 𝙻𝚎𝚎 (𝙰𝚟𝚊𝚝𝚊𝚛 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝙻𝚊𝚜𝚝 𝙰𝚒𝚛𝚋𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚎𝚛)

Who: Azula's Team consisting of fire nation's Princess Azula and her best friends Ty Lee and Mai.
Style: Take notes from Ancient Chinese royalty and warrior clothing with an Avatar world twist. They changed up their outfits once in a while for rare filler leisure episodes.
Limited wardrobe? Yes, for the most part.

𝟺. 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙵𝚊𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝙲𝚕𝚞𝚋 (𝙳𝚊𝚛𝚒𝚊)

Who: Lawndale High's popular and superficial fashion club with Sandi as president, Quinn as vice president, Tiffany as treasury, and Stacy as secretary.
Style: Anything midriff baring/popular teen fashion at the turn of the millennium.
Limited wardrobe? Mostly, but they do dress up to the occasion.

𝟹. 𝙹𝚎𝚖 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝙷𝚘𝚕𝚘𝚐𝚛𝚊𝚖𝚜 (𝙹𝚎𝚖)

Who: Rock band fronted by Jerrica Benton aka Jem, Aja and Shana on guitar, Raya as drummer, and Kimber as keyboardist.
Style: Wild, colorful, bright, flamboyant, glam, #trulyoutrageous. Big hair and dramatic eye makeup - the female version of Kiss/Twisted Sister.
Limited wardrobe? No

𝟸. 𝙰𝚕𝚎𝚡, 𝚂𝚊𝚖, 𝙲𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚛 (𝚃𝚘𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚂𝚙𝚒𝚎𝚜)

Who: Teen spies Alex, Sam, and Clover are undercover agents a la Charlie's Angels.
Style: Colorful early 2000's clothing. Although Clover is supposed to be the most 'fashion conscious' character, the group's style in clothing could be interchangeable to one another.
Limited wardrobe? No

𝟷. 𝚂𝚊𝚒𝚕𝚘𝚛 𝚂𝚌𝚘𝚞𝚝𝚜 (𝚂𝚊𝚒𝚕𝚘𝚛 𝙼𝚘𝚘𝚗)

Who: Princesses of the solar system.
Style: Sailor Moon characters covered a lot of fashion ground from school uniforms to more fantasy/couture type of attire, especially with their villains. The og artist even took looks directly off irl runways and ads for various artwork, and there are countless depictions of the Sailor Scouts in high fashion. However, the casual 90's outfits from the original cartoon has gained appreciation in recent times. Since some things are coming back in style, maybe they can update to present-day hypebeast trends?
Limited wardrobe? No.

(In general) Do you have an animated character whose style you stan?

FILM

News on upcoming “feminist” horror film, Run Sweetheart Run. Atlanta director Hiro Murai is in talks to direct the upcoming alien thriller Man Alive. Tik Tik Tik is the latest in Indian science fiction films, and we have an article to share which provides an overview of the “small but significant canon” of Indian sci-fi cinema. For horror fans, Netflix released the trailer for the upcoming Indian horror series Ghoul. In other foreign horror news we have the upcoming South African film The Tokoloshe and the Portuguese horror The Forest of Lost Souls. Finally, a unique archival documentary film about the Slenderman, A Self-Induced Hallucination, is available to watch online.

* Hiro Murai has directed episodes of Atlanta, Barry, and FX's Legion; he also directed the music video for Childish Gambino's “This Is America”
* According to Deadline, Murai may be directing his first feature film with Fox's Man Alive.
* Man Alive, a sci-fi thriller, “covers the events following the invasion of earth by an alien species, when a man faced with isolation and loneliness in order to survive realizes he might not be alone after all.”
* David Robert Mitchell, who directed It Follows, rewrote the spec script for the film.

* Filmmaker Shana Feste's latest film, Boundaries, recently premiered last March at SXSW.
* Feste's new project will be directing the feminist horror thriller, Run Sweetheart Run, from a script that she wrote.
* "In Run Sweetheart Run, a blind date turns violent and the woman has to get home on foot through Los Angeles as she’s pursued by her date."
* No casting news yet.

For the creepypasta fans: A new Slenderman documentary is now online!

* A Self-Induced Hallucination is a documentary film by Dan Schoenbrun, made up of entirely of YouTube footage that was uploaded between 2009 - 2018. The film dissects the Slenderman mythos, and also “confronts” the infamous stabbing in which two 12 year old girls stabbed their friend to prove their loyalty to the Slender Man, who they were convinced was real.
* From the article: “Using clips culled from the depths of YouTube, Hallucination dissects a collective consciousness born from primitive internet use that warped — with the help of a modern horror icon — into something akin to religion.”
* A Self-Induced Hallucination is available on Vimeo; linked at the source.
* Schoenbrun also wrote a director’s statement for Filmmaker magazine about why he made the documentary
* From his statement: ”My Slenderman fixation only heightened after the 2016 election. ‘Donald Trump is a Tulpa,’ one blog surmised, referencing a popular theory that explains the Slenderman’s origin in Buddhist terms. ‘He exists because you thought of him. Now try and not think of him,’ one user wrote in the message board thread that originally birthed the Slenderman character.”
* Schoenbrun’s director’s statement is a good read; if you’re at all into documentary filmmaking, the Slenderman attempted murder, and/or creepypasta, check it out.

* Tik Tik Tik is a newly released, Tamil-language popular science fiction film which is being called India’s first space film.
* Tik Tik Tik stars Jayam Ravi, Aaron Aziz, and Nivetha Pethuraj and is achieving box office success.
* The article gives an overview of Indian science fiction films, such as Time Machine, PK, and Koi... Mil Gaya, the latter which spawned two sequels.
* The author writes that, “Popular Indian cinema is all about escapism, so bleak dystopian futures have no place.” However, there is the film Matrubhoomi: A Nation Without Women, which “looked at a grim future as a result of female foeticide and infanticide.”
* There are some rom-coms set in space; the author highlights Baar Baar Dekho, which "stars Sidharth Malhotra as a maths professor who realises the value of relationships only by travelling through time."
* Upcoming science fiction films include Mangal Ho, Saaho, and Kee.

Netflix has released the trailer for its first Indian horror series, Ghoul, produced in part by Blumhouse and starring Radhika Apte.

Actress Lebohang Mthunzi and star of the South African horror film The Tokoloshe shared the news that the film will be premiering around the world at various horror festivals, including August’s Fright Fest in London. The tokoloshe is an evil spirit in Zulu mythology.
Watch the teaser trailer here!

The character Sam Sylvia in the Netflix series "GLOW" is loosely inspired by Italian-American filmmaker, Matt Cimber, who directed a horror movie in 1976 called The Witch Who Came From The Sea.

* The film was one of 72 genre-films that the UK's Department of Public Prosecutions dubbed a "Video Nasty".
* The poster art for the movie is highly deceptive, as there are no actual witches or scythes in the film. It's also hardly a gory flick so much as it is a psychological thriller.
* Read more about the movie here!

* Independent distributor Wild Eye Releasing will be releasing The Forest of Lost Souls in the company's first theatrical release.
* The Forest of Lost Souls is written and directed by directed by José Pedro Lopes; the film "follows complete strangers Ricardo and Carolina, who meet seemingly by chance in the 'Forest of the Lost Souls', a place where many people go to commit suicide.
* The cast includes Daniela Love, Jorge Mota, Mafalda Banquart, Ligia Roque and Lilia Lopes.
* The Forest of Lost Souls will be released on August 3.

Who Says Celebrity Relationships Don't Last? Celeb Unions of 30-Years-and-Counting (ONTD Original)

Happy 30th Wedding Anniversary to Michael J. Fox and Tracey Pollan!

The couple met when she was cast as his girlfriend on Family Ties back in the '80s and wed on July 16, 1988. They weathered the blow of Michael's diagnosis with Parkinson's Disease only three years into their marriage and have raised four children together.

In their honor, let's take a look at 30 more celeb unions that have made it past the three-decade mark and are still going strong, ending with the three couples who have already been married more than twice as long as Fox and Pollan:

Note: For the sake of simplicity, I used wedding dates to calculate the length of the relationships but in cases where the couples either never married or were together for decades before marrying, I used the year they began dating.

(Almost) 30 Years: Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick (September 4, 1988)
Okay, they won't technically celebrate their 30th anniversary for another two months, but close enough. On the secret to their longevity, Sedgwick says: "Sex is really important. That desire is there. When he walks into a room, I'm still…I mean, my heart gets a little fluttery and I think, 'Oh! He's so cute. He's so hot.' That's literally the first thing I think."

30 Years: Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson (April 30, 1988)
They first fell for each other on the set of 1985’s Volunteers and despite tabloid rumors of a separation two years ago, the pair are still together. In 2016, Hanks said "People say, 'Jeez, it must be hard to stay married in show business’. "I think it's hard to stay married anywhere, but if you marry the right person, it might work out.”

31 Years: Mark Harmon and Pam Dawber (March 21, 1987)
The NCIS actor and the Mork and Mindy actress renewed their vows in a backyard ceremony for their 30th anniversary last year. Dawber credits stepping away from her own career as an actress to be a stay-at-home mom with her marriage’s success: "I don't think two people can work all the time in show business and stay married.”

31 Years: Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall (June 25, 1987)
The Veep star and her writer-producer husband were college sweethearts at Northwestern University before going on to appear on Saturday Night Live together. “I married the right guy for me, and that was lucky...But I worked very, very hard to keep us intact. And it's been my pleasure, because it's the only way I could have survived in this business — with my family unit in place.”

32 Years: Tina Turner and Erwin Bach (Together since 1986, Married July 4, 2013)
Turner and music executive Bach spent more than a quarter-century together before he officially put a ring on it. When they first began dating, Bach was 30 to Turner’s 46 and routinely labeled her “boytoy” by the tabloids. At their Swiss wedding ceremony, Turner made headlines for eschewing the typical white wedding gown in favor of a black-and-green Armani ensemble.

32 Years: Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham (1986)
Winfrey and business CEO Graham met at a charity event and got engaged in 1992, but later decided not to get married and to have a “spiritual union” instead.

"I said to Stedman, ‘What would have happened if we had actually gotten married?’ And the answer is: ‘We wouldn’t be together.’ We would not have stayed together, because marriage requires a different way of being in this world. His interpretation of what it means to be a husband and what it would mean for me to be a wife would have been pretty traditional, and I would not have been able to fit into that.”

33 Years: Mike Farrell and Shelley Fabares (December 31, 1984)
TV stars Farrell (M*A*S*H) and Fabares (The Donna Reed Show, Coach) share a passion for social activism, with Farrell having spent decades campaigning for global human rights and the abolition of the death penalty and Fabares fighting for a cure for Alzheimers, from which her mother suffered. The pink hair is something she adopted on a whim while waiting for a liver transplant, which she received in 2000.

33 Years: Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest (December 18, 1984)
When she was 25 years old, Curtis was flipping through an issue of Rolling Stone and saw a photo of Christopher Guest, who was starring in the cult classic mockumentary This is Spinal Tap. She joked to her friend “I’m going to marry that man”, and as it happened, her friend knew Guest’s agent and got his phone number for Curtis. He proposed two months later, and they married only six months after Curtis first saw his photo in that magazine.

Asked the secret to a long marriage in 2015, Curtis replied "Don't get divorced. I could write a book on marriage called 'Don't Leave.'"

34 Years: Keith Richards and Patti Hansen (December 18, 1983)
The first time model Hansen took her rock-god boyfriend to meet her parents, he showed up wasted and smashed his guitar on their dining-room table while she crouched in tears at the top of the stairs (he was mad because her family continued talking while he was playing and failed to applaud). But he won her over with love notes written in his own blood – a practice she says he still continues today.

35 Years: Denzel Washington and Pauletta Pearson (June 25, 1983)
They met on the set of the TV film Wilma in 1977 and quickly became a couple. But Pearson turned down two marriage proposals from Washington before finally agreeing to become his wife. Although they have been dogged by rumors of Washington’s infidelity – including tabloid stories of an affair with Sanaa Lathan, which both he and Lathan denied – he maintains that his marriage will last: “Everybody has their ups and downs; we've had ours. It's hard work, you know. But we made a commitment."

35 Years: Jackie Chan and Joan Lin (December 1, 1982)
Chan openly states that he only married actress Lin because she was pregnant with their son Jaycee: "It was an accident which conceived Jaycee. I had never thought of getting married, but I felt it was akin to being forced to get married.” He also admits that he continued seeing other women after the wedding in an effort to find his perfect match, and that’s how he came to father a daughter with Hong Kong beauty queen Elaine Ng in 1999, which he calls “an error that every man in the world could make”.

Although he expected Lin to divorce him, she instead forgave him, and Chan now calls his wife “the only love of my life”.

35 Years: Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn (February 14, 1983)
They first met on the set of a 1966 film (when Russell was 14 and Hawn 20), but it was when they reconnected to film Swing Shift 17 years later that they had their first date, on Valentine’s Day. With an accumulated three failed marriages behind them, Russell and Hawn have chosen not to marry again but have remained committed to each other.

Hawn: “[We] would have been long divorced if [we’d] been married. For me, I chose to stay, Kurt chose to stay. And we liked the choice…A lasting relationship isn’t about marriage. It’s about compatibility and communication.”

36 Years: Bono and Alison Hewson (August 21, 1982)
Alison met Paul Hewson at school when she was 12 and he was 13. They began dating about three years later and married when they were 21 and 22, but Alison had trouble fitting in when Paul, now known as Bono, found huge success with U2 (a journalist once observed her with the group at a Hollywood hot spot and described her as looking as "out of place as a dairy maid in a brothel").

Nonetheless, Alison says "Our marriage has worked because we like each other, because we talk to each other, and we are passionate about what we do. We allow each other to pursue our goals."

36 Years: Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne (July 4, 1982)
Sharon revealed last year that Ozzy has cheated on her with six different women over the course of their marriage: “Some Russian teenager, then a masseuse in England, our masseuse [in the U.S.], and then our cook...Basically, if you’re a women giving Ozzy either a back rub or a trolley of food, God help you.”

She left him in 2016 after discovering his affair with a hairstylist when he accidentally sent her an email meant for his mistress, but they reconciled after he went to rehab for sex addiction. Says Ozzy: “I made a huge mistake. Without Sharon, I am nothing. I love her. I can honestly say that I have never loved anybody other than my wife.”

37 Years: Ringo Starr and Barbara Bach (April 27, 1981)
They met while filming the movie Caveman in 1980, and the Beatles drummer and the Bond Girl (The Spy Who Loved Me) claim to be as much in love as ever: Says Ringo "I'm beyond blessed that she loves me and we're still together." Barbara: "I love the man and that's it."

37 Years: Ron Perlman and Opal Stone (February 14, 1981)
The Hellboy star met his jewelry-designer wife (how much do we love that her name is Opal Stone and she designs jewelry?) when he was a struggling actor working in a friend's boutique for extra cash and she walked in to buy a pair of earrings. Perlman on what he learned from marriage: "I learned it isn't all about me; how to meet someone half way. I learned how to compromise when I could, and how not to when I couldn't."

38 Years: Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson (January 14, 1980)
Jackson was a student at Morehouse College and Richardson at nearby Spelman College when the two theater students met in 1974. When their daughter Zoe was eight years old, she and her mother found Jackson unconscious on the floor after a crack cocaine binge. He credits their response with saving him: "[They] put my ass in rehab the next day and supported me and pushed me and give me a reason to get up and go and chase it day after day."

39 Years: Mark Hamill and Marilou York (December 17, 1978)
Hamill was a patient of dental hygienist York in the mid-70s. They started dating but broke up when Star Wars came out in 1977 and success went to his head: “I had to taste groupies and fame. I went to Las Vegas to date 38-year-old showgirls. I wanted to scale all these women. That was exciting for about the first 10 minutes. Eventually, I wanted something to hold onto—and a family.” They got back together, married and raised three kids.

Asked in a Reddit AMA what the secret to a successful marriage is, Hamill replied “A really short manual would read ‘Don’t cheat,’ because that seems to be where people break up.”

40 Years: Meryl Streep and Don Gummer (September 30, 1978)
Even Streep's own mother didn't expect this one to last, since Streep married sculptor Gummer only 6 months after her fiancé, actor John Cazale, died of cancer; in fact, she first met Gummer when he accompanied her brother to help her pack up her belongings from Cazale's loft after his death.

While there have been rumors of extramarital relationships over the years (most infamously, Streep's alleged wild Winnebago sex with Jack Nicholson on the set of 1987's Ironweed) they are still together, having raised a son and three daughters to adulthood.

40 Years: Gloria and Emilio Estefan (September 2, 1978)
Gloria began dating the Miami Sound Machine's 24-year-old bandleader when she was 19 years old and has said "he was my first and only boyfriend." Just last week, Emilio joked that the secret to their union is "respect and love and, more than anything else, being Latino, you say, ‘Yes, baby. Whatever you want" - which Gloria promptly called "a crock, [but] he makes me laugh every single day of my life.”

41 Years: Jeff Bridges and Susan Geston (June 5, 1977)
24-year-old Jeff Bridges asked out his 20-year-old waitress - who happened to be sporting two black eyes and a broken nose from a recent car wreck - one night ("I knew I was madly in love with my wife the minute I saw her"), but she turned him down.

Luckily, he later convinced her to take a ride to Glacier National Park with him and a friend in a motor home, and their romance began. Now he says "What you don't know until you get married is that you think all the other doors close, which is true, but this doorway you open is a hallway lined with all these other brilliant doors—kids, deeper intimacy, adventures, and everything else."

43 Years: Ron Howard and Cheryl Alley (June 7, 1975)
Howard was 21 years old and still just the star of Happy Days when he married his high school sweetheart and fellow ginger Cheryl. It was that decade of fashion hell known as the 1970s, so perhaps we can forgive him the powder-blue tuxedo and ruffled shirt. But can Potsie (Anson Williams) and Ralph (Donnie Most), who served as groomsmen, forgive him for making them wear it, too?

44 Years: Sissy Spacek and Jack Fisk (April 12, 1974)
Fisk, now a film director, was the art director on Spacek's first film, 1973's Badlands, when they met. They wed wearing blue jeans and with their dog as their only guest. Spacek says "We never expected a lifelong relationship. In fact, we even opened a bank account and put $30 in it, because that's how much it cost to get divorced. Now I think it would take something dramatic like death to end it."

47 Years: Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner (Together since 1971, married December 31, 2013)
Although they had to wait more than four decades for the law to let them marry, the comedienne and her writer wife have been together since collaborating on Tomlin's comedy album And That's the Truth in 1971. They have continued working together through all of their years as a couple, creating such work as Tomlin's Tony Award-winning show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, the film The Incredible Shrinking Woman, and several more Grammy-nominated comedy albums.

49 Years: Christopher Walken and Georgianne Thon (January 1969)
The actor and the Emmy-winning Sopranos and Entourage casting director made the choice not to have children (so that they could focus on their careers and wouldn't feel pressured to take more dependable jobs in order to support a family), but today they are devoted "parents" to their rescue cat, Bowie.

52 Years: Dolly Parton and Carl Dean (May 30, 1966)
The reclusive Dean has been photographed with his country star wife only a handful of times over the past five decades. Parton calls their relationship "so totally open and free" and admits to having had affairs, including one (believed to be with her band leader Gregg Perry) in the '80s that led her to contemplate suicide when it ended. She says she would still be open to having an affair now but would not tell her husband about it because she'd "die" if he ever left her.

55 Years: Bob Newhart and Ginnie Quinn (January 12, 1963)
Comedian Buddy Hackett set Newhart up on a blind date with Quinn, his children’s babysitter, and they married less than a year later, eventually raising four children. Ginnie has said of their marriage: “Divorce was just not in our vocabulary. Like anybody we had fights, and we had some pretty good ones. But I was never happy being apart from him, and he was never happy being apart from me.”

61 Years: Alan Alda and Arlene Weiss (March 15, 1957)
M*A*S*H star (and male-feminist-way-before-it-was-cool) Alan Alda knew writer-photographer Arlene was the one for him because of a rum cake. They met at a party where the hostess' dessert fell and smashed on the floor. "Arlene and I were the only two people who went in with spoons and ate it off the floor. That's how you know. When two people eat a cake off the floor, that's it for life. All this matchmaking on the Internet, and they ask them questions — just toss a cake on the floor and see who goes for it."

64 Years: Kirk Douglas and Anne Buydens (May 29, 1954)
The secret to Kirk Douglas' six-decade-long marriage? His wife doesn't mind if he cheats, just as long as he tells her about it. Says the German-born Anne: "As a European, I understood it was unrealistic to expect total fidelity in a marriage. European women are less likely to run to the divorce court in righteous indignation than Americans are. I loved my husband and my life and our family, so why would I give all that up because of pride?"

70 Years: Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip (November 20, 1947)
13-year-old Princess Elizabeth began writing to her second-cousin-once-removed, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, after becoming smitten with the 18-year-old cadet during a tour of Dartmouth Naval College with her parents. Although their marriage has been plagued by tabloid rumors of Philip's alleged infidelities (with a Russian ballerina, an actress, and the Queen's own cousin Princess Alexandra, among others), there's never been any actual evidence and the women have always denied it.

More troublesome has been Philip's chronic foot-in-mouth disease, which has led to so many cringe-worthy moments over the years. Not surprisingly, on their 50th wedding anniversary, Philip said "I think the main lesson that we have learnt is that tolerance is the one essential ingredient of any happy marriage. You can take it from me that the Queen has the quality of tolerance in abundance."

ontdhorrorshorts.jpg

The horror short film can be a hit (really creepy, inspiring filmmakers to develop into a full feature film) or miss (low budget, low scares, and low entertainment factor). Because of the limited time, shorts can do really interesting things and without the weight of a three-act formula, it can be great to watch. Whether or not making them into a full film was a good decision or a choice is another post for another day...(looking at you Mama)

Before the web, the end of festivals would mean the end for these little films. Not so nowadays, so grab a cold drink, beat the heat and come with your sistren to take a look at (or share some of your own favs) some memorable horror shorts.

Dog Food (2014)

Starring bigger names (Amanda Seyfried and Cory Michael Smith), a butcher named Declan loses his dog and has dinner with a girl, Eva, who he met when she makes an order at his business. Maybe not totally a horror short, but suspenseful and cringey with some gore.

Don't Look Away

When a teenage girl tells her dad about a mysterious figure staring at her, all her father can say is: "DON'T LOOK AWAY". An intriguing premise that actually piques ones interest in a full feature.

ONTD Original: Books to Look Forward to in the Second Half of 2018

$
0
0

Every year is packed with new book releases and it's hard to keep track of everything. But OP is here to help. Here are some of the most anticipated books coming out in the second half of 2018: a mix of thrillers, literary fiction, historical romance, non-fiction, fantasy and more. There's (hopefully) something for everyone.

JULY

Spinning Silver (Naomi Novik) - Fantasy - This has actually been out for a few days so lucky for you, you don't have to wait any more to read it!! A fantastic retelling of the Rumpelstilstkin fairy-tale, mixed in with Novik's own wonderful imagination.

Give Me Your Hand (Megan Abbott) - Mystery, thriller - Two former friends find themselves locked in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse that threatens to destroy them both.

The Incendiaries (R.O. Kwon) - Contemporary fiction / literary fiction - A shocking novel of violence, love, faith, and loss, as a young woman at an elite American university is drawn into acts of domestic terrorism by a cult tied to North Korea.

AUGUST

The Colour of Time: A New History of the World, 1850-1960 (Dan Jones, Marina Amaral) - History / Non-fiction - Brazilian artist Marina Amaral brings colour to iconic photographs of the most celebrated moments and personalities in modern history. Each image is accompanied by a text by historian Dan Jones, telling the stories behind them.

The Winter of the Witch (Katherine Arden) - YA Fantasy - The very anticipated 3rd (and last) book in the captivating Winternight series.

Washington Black (Esi Edugyan) - Historical fiction - Washington Black is an eleven-year-old field slave who knows no other life than the Barbados sugar plantation where he was born. When his master's eccentric brother chooses him to be his manservant, Wash is terrified of the cruelties he is certain await him. But Christopher Wilde, or "Titch," is a naturalist, explorer, scientist, inventor, and abolitionist. He initiates Wash into a world where a flying machine can carry a man across the sky; where two people, separated by an impossible divide, might begin to see each other as human; and where a boy born in chains can embrace a life of dignity and meaning. But when a man is killed and a bounty is placed on Wash's head, Titch abandons everything to save him. What follows is their flight along the eastern coast of America, and, finally, to a remote outpost in the Arctic, where Wash, left on his own, must invent another new life, one which will propel him further across the globe.

Flights (Olga Tokarczuk) - literary fiction - Winner of the Man Booker International Prize 2018. Through brilliantly imagined characters and stories, interwoven with haunting, playful, and revelatory meditations, Flights explores what it means to be a traveler, a wanderer, a body in motion not only through space but through time.

The Silence of the Girls (Pat Barker) - Literary fiction / retelling - From the Booker Prize-winning author of the Regeneration trilogy comes a monumental new masterpiece, set in the midst of literature's most famous war. Pat Barker turns her attention to the timeless legend of The Iliad, as experienced by the captured women living in the Greek camp in the final weeks of the Trojan War.

The Governess Game (Tessa Dare) - Historical romance - Tessa's books are always a lovely treat. In this installment of the Girl Meets Duke series (which you don't have to read in order), a governess attempts to mend the ways of the libertine Duke who is the guardian of the two wild orphan girls who are her charges.

Foundryside (Robert Jackson Bennett) - Fantasy - In a city that runs on industrialized magic, a secret war will be fought to overwrite reality itself-the first in a dazzling new fantasy series.

SEPTEMBER

Transcription (Kate Atkinson) - Historical fiction - From the Costa Award winning author of Life After Life and A God in Ruins. Juliet Armstrong is recruited as a young woman by an obscure wartime department of the Secret Service. In the aftermath of war she joins the BBC, where her life begins to unravel, and she finally has to come to terms with the consequences.

The Real Lolita: The Kidnapping of Sally Horner and the Novel That Scandalized the World (Sarah Weinman) - true crime - Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita is one of the most beloved and notorious novels of all time. And yet, very few of its readers know that the subject of the novel was inspired by a real-life case: the 1948 abduction of eleven-year-old Sally Horner.

The Spy and the Traitor: The Greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War (Ben Macintyre) - non-fiction - The celebrated author of A Spy Among Friends and Rogue Heroes returns with his greatest spy story yet, a thrilling Cold War-era tale of Oleg Gordievsky, the Russian whose secret work helped hasten the collapse of the Soviet Union.

OCTOBER

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (Mackenzi Lee) - YA Romance - Sequel to The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. Felicity Montague just wants to be a doctor - instead, she finds herself on an adventure with the daughter of a notorious pirate queen that will lead her from the German countryside to the promenades of Zurich to secrets lurking beneath the Atlantic.

The Witch Elm (Tana French) - Thriller - Tana French steps away from the Dublin Murder Squad with this standalone thriller. Toby is a happy-go-lucky charmer who’s dodged a scrape at work and is celebrating with friends when the night takes a turn that will change his life – he surprises two burglars who beat him and leave him for dead. Struggling to recover from his injuries, beginning to understand that he might never be the same man again, he takes refuge at his family’s ancestral home to care for his dying uncle Hugo. Then a skull is found in the trunk of an elm tree in the garden – and as detectives close in, Toby is forced to face the possibility that his past may not be what he has always believed.

I Am Behind You (John Ajvide Lindqvist) - Horror - From the author of Let the Right One In. Molly wakes her mother to go to the toilet. The campsite is strangely blank. The toilet block has gone. Everything else has gone too. This is a place with no sun. No god. Just four families remain. Each has done something to bring them here - each denies they deserve it. Until they see what's coming over the horizon, moving irrevocably towards them. Their worst mistake. Their darkest fear. And for just one of them, their homecoming.

Melmoth (Sarah Perry) - Literary fiction - From the author of The Essex Serpent. Helen Franklin, working as a translator in Prague, she has found a home of sorts—or, at least, refuge. That changes when her friend Karel discovers a mysterious letter in the library, a strange confession and a curious warning that speaks of Melmoth the Witness, a dark legend found in obscure fairy tales and antique village lore. As such superstition has it, Melmoth travels through the ages, dooming those she persuades to join her to a damnation of timeless, itinerant solitude. To Helen it all seems the stuff of unenlightened fantasy. But, unaware, as she wanders the cobblestone streets Helen is being watched. And then Karel disappears.

Priest of Bones (Peter McLean) - Fantasy - The first in a brand new dark and gritty epic fantasy series, where a crime boss comes home from the war only to find that his businesses have been stolen from him.

NOVEMBER

My Sister, the Serial Killer (Oyinkan Braithwaite) - Thriller - Satire meets slasher in this short, darkly funny hand grenade of a novel about a Nigerian woman whose younger sister has a very inconvenient habit of killing her boyfriends.

Nine Perfect Strangers (Liane Moriarty) - Contemporary fiction - Could ten days at a health resort really change you forever? These nine perfect strangers are about to find out...

The Other Miss Bridgerton (Julia Quinn) - Historical fiction - If you read historical fiction, you know who Julia Quinn is. This is the third in the Rokesbys series, which is really a prequel to the Bridgerton series, but don't worry, you don't have to read them in order. - Adventurous Poppy Bridgerton stumbles into a smuggler's cave while holidaying on the Dorset coast, and ends up kidnapped by pirates. The captain - actually the son of an Earl - didn't ask for this, but now they seem to be stuck together on a voyage to Portugal.

Skyward (Brandon Sanderson) - Sci-fi, YA - Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters. Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible—assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her. Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul.

Fire and Blood: A History of the Targaryen Kings from Aegon the Conqueror to Aegon III as scribed by Archmaester Gyldayn (George RR Martin) - Fantasy - Did you want The Winds of Winter? Hahahaha! Have another history of the Targaryens instead.

The fashion on VH1's "Of Love" shows was truly iconic. It captured its generation yet was ahead of its time.

Last time I shared the most iconique recipes from these shows. This time, we will revel in the beeyooteefull fashuns.

(click the videos for a clip, they will jump to the right spot.)

WARNING: Image-heavy and lots of 2000s fashion. You have been warned.

Flavor Flav is the man who kicked off this whole series on Flavor of Love. He would often make solemn, heartbreaking decisions of great importance while wearing pimp tuxedos, viking horns, crowns, and, of course, huge clocks.

On the season finale of Flavor of Love, Hoopz and New York showed up to the final ceremony in the same damn dress. Maybe they were more alike than they thought?

 photo ontd ny hoopz_zpsyfhrdjc5.png

On Rock of Love Season 1, Lacey was a militant vegan and Dallas loved eating meat and wearing animal products. They clashed immediately. Dallas decided to antagonize Lacey by wearing all animal products, including leather, snakeskin, and fur. Lacey put on all her PETA gear and nearly got Dallas to lose her temper and attack her.

Megan Hauserman became reality gold, partially because she refused to wear any clothes except her bikinis. She could always be found carrying around her Chihuahua, Lily, and wearing a skimpy bikini that showed her buttcrack and long torso.

VH1 gave Bret Michaels his own show to romance some rocker girls. When he named Daisy the MVP of his Mud Bowl-- a contest where the women wear booty shorts and play football in the mud-- he took her on a romantic date shopping at a high-fashion boutique a stripper store.

On Flavor of Love: Charm School, the girls were divided into two teams and had to put on a fashion show.

One team's theme was a generic and problematic "Asian" theme that starred Leilene, a former model and stripper. The other team's theme was "Walking on Air." They used the curtains to make a dress and glued feathers on the toes and eyelashes of Darra, a plus-sized non-model.

The winners:

The losers:

On Rock of Love Charm School, the girls had to donate their clothes to raise money for charity.

Schatar, aka Hottie, claimed that she only wore couture gowns and name-brand designers. But at the thrift store, the clerk refused almost all of her clothes because they were so cheap, stained, and smelled bad.

The coat that she said was Isaac Mizrahi was actually Isaac Mizrahi... for Target. The cashier said that her dress had a "strange smell" and several stains.

Anyways, Hottie's "couture" isn't exactly the style she'll be remembered for...

The Rock of Love: Charm School girls had to make over their skanky classmates Heather, Megan, and Brandi C. into classy ladies.

Heather arrived at Charm school dressed, in the words of Megan, as:

Megan is best known for wearing bikinis 24/7 and carrying her tiny dog around as a fashion accessory:

And Brandi C. dresses like this:

Rock of Love Charm School finalists Destiny, Brandi M., Lacey, and Heather created tee shirts for one of the greatest fashion designers of all time: Ed Hardy. They were joined by one of the (for real) greatest musicians of all time: French icon Johnny Hallyday, who judged their Ed Hardy shirts.

While some men might not feel comfortable eating a banana in public, I thought we could take a look at some male celebs who were comfortable enough to do it in public.

Singer Shawn Mendes loves bananas so much he posted himself enjoying it online. Shawn clearly understands that bananas are a great tool in his physical routine as they may help relieve muscle cramps caused by exercise. They also provide excellent fuel for a variety of endurance exercises.

Shawn

Former Lena Dunham paramour Jack Antonoff casually ate a banana at the 2017 MTV awards. Bananas were probably great after his break up with Lena because they are known to help alleviate depression!

JackBanana

Actor Shia Labeouf was spotted eating a banana on set. The eccentric actor should probably eat more of these delicious fruits because they can help prevent heart attacks.

fa8cc66534e83485_Funny_Pictures_of_Shia_LaBeouf_Eating_a_Banana_on_Set_Of_Transformers_3

He's not alone. Zac Efron also enjoys a banana between takes on set to get that potassium fill.

Zac

Even athletes understand the importance of bananas. They are naturally light and easy to carry around for sporting events to get that much needed energy!

077653eb515b4183c1efc6190fa314f8

Singer Harry Styles has been known to enjoy the banana from time to time. Harry probably realizes that bananas have no fat, no sodium, and no cholesterol making it a great snack for concerts. He's not shy when it comes to bananas having being photographed many times enjoying the fruit.

thW8NDLKXT

As you can see from these Celebs, there is no shame in enjoying all the benefits of bananas.

Like the lover of carpetsJessica Simpson once sung in the 2001 classic, "a little bit goes a long way." We know Xtina's signature belts and runs earned her to be one of the greatest vocalists of our generation (or at least most distinctive), but even her softer tones she 'experiments' with blows these whisper pop singers of today out of the water. If she #stripped it back and #piped down more often, it would have been OVER for these ho's but she's generous and giving them breathing space. Plus, know we the radio likes simpler vocal takes in pop music - queen of sacrificing airplay.

Here's 9 Xtina moments where she did not need to be a vocal acrobat, and let her lush resonance speak for itself (aside from a belt or two). The simplistic BEAUTY of it all.

Save Me From Myself (2006)

When I'm about to fall
Somehow you're always waitin'
With your open arms to catch me
You're gonna save me from myself
From myself
You're gonna save me from myself

So Emotional (1999)

It's either black or white that's right
We're making love or in a fight
Sometimes you make me so blue

But then it feels so good I knew it would
You know the way to make me crazy
I want to give it to you

Loving Me 4 Me (2002)

People ask if I'm in love with you
Because I'm sitting here with your picture
And smiling to myself

I'm kinda lost in my own thoughts of you
My heart speaks before my mind thinks through
And I blush as I say yes

Without You (2006)

What kind of world
Would it be without you
I couldn't breathe without you here
What kind of world
Would I see without you
I can't dream without you here

I Am (2010)

Love me or leave me just take it or leave it
It's not that I'm needy just need you to see me
Take me, free me, see through to the core of me
Take me, free me, there will be no more pretending

All I Need (2010)

You bring me hope when I can't breathe
You give me love, you're all I need

Slowly I'm holding you
Closely you're wrapped in my arms
And you're inside me

Birds of Prey (2010)

Suddenly lost inside a fantasy
Everything not quite what it seems to be
Slipping and falling through the looking glass
Catching a glimpse at all that lies behind the masks

You disappear with the dawn
You only see what you want
When you're out with the birds of prey

Say Something (2013)

Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
And anywhere, I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

Pipe (2018)

Don't you know, don't you know
That I got that rah-rah-rah rocky boat
Bet I'll make you splash like Geronimo
If you don't like it fast, I could take it slow
Wanna show you how much I missed ya
My schedule flexible so I switched up
Permanent vacation, we should go away
Way too much for me to wanna throw away

ONTD Original: Remembering Amy Winehouse 7 years after her death

$
0
0

Amy Jade Winehouse (1983 - 2011) died of alcohol poisoning 7 years ago today (a death that was exacerbated by a heart condition resulting from years of addiction and bulimia), making her another name on the list of the "27 Club" (I didn't want to write she was a 'member' of the club, it just sounded bad and weirdly encouraging of this sad phenomenon).

In 2003 Winehouse released her debut album, "Frank". It was a critical success, being praised for being different from popular music at the time. She co-wrote every song on the album, working closely with producer Salaam Remi. "Frank" was a jazzy, insightful and critical exploration of life.

Remi and Winehouse won an Ivor Novello (English/Irish award voted solely by the writing community with no input from publishers or record companies allowed) in the Best Contemporary Song category for "Stronger Than Me"

OP wants to note that she also released this tune and that they jam to on the regular:

At a time when it was all about the WAG lifestyle....this song was just the perfect antidote!

For her second album Winehouse moved away from jazz and focused on 1950s-60s girl groups, using their doo wop infused pop as inspiration. Back to Black (October 2006) received near universal acclaim (looking at you Pitchfork with a 6.4/10!), with Winehouse winning 5 Grammys. The most any British female has won in a single night (until Adele)

Winehouse worked mostly with Mark Ronson as producer and recruited the horns from Sharon Jones [rip] and the Dap Kings. The songs chronicle her early breakups with future husband Blake Fielder-Civil (aka the man who admits to introducing her to heroin, crack cocaine and self harm). Back to Black's lyricism was repeatedly praised by everyone, the combination of old school sounds with brutally honest lyrics about addiction, infidelity and toxic relationships made Back to Black an unforgettable accomplishment.

(op wants to note that they heard this album for the first time while walking around Limehouse on a rainy day (aged 22) and it changed their life)

She appeared on NMTB (Never Mind the Buzzcocks) in November 2006 to promote Back to Black. At the time most of us thought this was a hilarious series of interactions with the panel (and host Simon Amstell (<3)), unaware that Winehouse was using hard drugs and that she would end up dead 5 years later. For years we watched Amy Winehouse fall down, pick herself up...only to fall down again.

ONTD Original - 10 Rock Songs to Keep You Pumped During a Workout

$
0
0

We all know that a hot music playlist can make or break a good workout but sometimes it can be a hassle to find a good tune that has a perfect tempo and a high beats-per-minute to match what you're doing, whether it be cardio or strength building.

So here is a selection of my go-to high energy songs with killer lyrics for workouts. I've fine-tuned my playlist over the years but these songs have remained on my spotify list of the things I listen to when I need that musical boost. Enjoy!

Don't Mess With Me by Brody Dalle

Let's kick things off strong with this powerful anthem by Brody Dalle, of The Distillers and Spinnerette fame. Dalle's voice, notorious for its rough edge, will keep you pumped with her unfettering lyrics and with heavy drums.

Get Higher by Palace Royale

If you haven't heard of them, Palace Royale is the latest band being pushed by all the alt rock news outlets but I really dig their stuff. This upbeat and bouncy song sounds like it could be in the trailer for a cheesy teen or kids movie (not unlike this one), doesn't it? It would certainly do the its job of helping you get your heartrate higher. *ba dum tsss*

On My Way by Billy Boy on Poison

This good time tune will distract you from your hardcore workouts with its funky guitar and heavy drums. It's technically about a booty call, but hey, whatever gets your booty slamming right? Plus, soon you'll be on your way to being over with your workout!

Hot by The Regrettes

This high energy ditty is about not being into a dude who believes himself god's gift to women. I've found it gets me very pumped during workouts, I mean, check out that guitar riff from 1:35 to 1:45. This song will get you hot in no time. ;)

Fun fact: I have been in a mosh pit to this song and it was amazing.

Wolf Like Me by TV on the Radio

Another great song with a high BPM for your cardio days. Honestly, I prefer the live version as lead singer Tunde Adebimpe's voice has this great rawness that doesn't get translated in the studio version but one thing's for sure: this song will get you feeling the wolf you really are.

Turn Your Back by Billy Talent feat. Anti-Flag

This jamming melody is almost an adventure with how much it'll drive you. I dare you not to sing along. And how can you not, with lyrics like: "You run, run, away, but there's no place to hide, mate! / When the days turn into night, you don't got no chance to fight, / 'Cause you're too late, so kiss your ass goodbye, mate!"

Another Way Out by Hollywood Undead

A gift from the gods of spotify's daily mix playlist. This jazzy tune with a high BPM will keep you motivated on your long running treks with creepy lyrics like: "You better run, better run, better run, yeah I’m coming after you / When you’re sleeping at night, yeah there’s nothing you can do." Whatever gets you moving, right?

Tomorrow's Money by My Chemical Romance

Listen, I will be an MCR stan til the day I die ok. My workout playlists have featured many an MCR song over the years, especially with their songs off their nearly-completed but scrapped album Conventional Weapons (scrapped because the band didn't really feel any thematic theme with the songs they completed so they started over by working on new songs that would end up on their fourth album Danger Days). The songs from Conventional Weapons were finally released online a few months before the band's eventual split.

Invincible by OK Go

Yes, that same OK Go that's behind the many a music video that get more intricate and insane and they go on. Most people are dazzled by their hijinks but I find it overshadows their music. They've released a couple consistently good albums that are really great to keep you hyped while running but most people sleep on them still because of that one video with the treadmills.

Heads Will Roll by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are clinically underrated ok. A majority of Karen O's stuff is great to work out to (I mean, have you tried it to her cover Immigrant Song? Killer, man.) since it's mostly all high energy stuff. So just let the heads roll with how hard you're going in your workout. :)
