ONTD Original: The Evolution of Ariana Grande's Updo + 'Raindrops' Preview

Hey, guess what, everybody! It's Ariana Grande's birthday today! She turns 25, so we're having a post.

If you don't know Ariana Grande, you probably at least know her ponytail. It's gone through tons of changes throughout her career and this post will dig into that.

First, though, we're going to touch up on The Origins of Ariana Grande's Ponytail, and it all starts under the cut.

- -

Aritail Origins, Part I

Ariana's breakthrough began in 2010 through Nickelodeon's teen sitcom Victorious. The show was set in a performing arts school and Ari played the adorably dimwitted character, Cat Valentine.

Turns out, all the main ladies that were cast were dark-haired and Nick's executives tackled that by adding in a bit of color. Victoria Justice and Daniella Monet got to keep their natural hair, while Liz Gillies and Ariana Grande (whose characters had stand-out personalities) had to adjust. Liz had some colored extensions put in, but Ariana had to literally sign away the rights to her hair and full-on dye it a very vibrant red. The upkeep continued on for Victorious' 4-season run.

How often did Ariana have to dye her hair?"Every other week."—Ari (2011)

But it didn't end there.

In 2012, Nickelodeon announced a spin-off series titled, Sam & Cat. Ari's team found a healthier way to dye her hair by ditching the bleach and opting for a low-peroxide dye. However, by this point, the damage was already very thoroughly done. Luckily, Sam & Cat would be the prelude to Ari's retirement of the 'Cat hair', since the show didn't make it passed its first season.

Aritail Origins, Part II

While Ariana agreed that the red hair suited Cat's taste and zany personality, Ariana herself did not love it, despite claiming/implying to in earlier interviews.

ClevverTV: "Do you like it? Do you feel like it's part of you now?"
Ariana Grande: "Um, I dunno, it took a second for me to, like, really, really, really get used to it, but I'm not opposed to it and I think it's fun.

Ariana Grande for Teen.com (2011): "You know, I like this color. I like it. But I like it more for my character than I do for me."

Some time before 2013, Ariana took to her Youtube channel to post a hair tutorial. In the video, she explains her early way of dealing with her damaged pieces/bangs "that don't really know what they are" and shows viewers how she pins them down. Throughout the tutorial, she refers to her way of doing her hair as "really weird", but admits to it being a "security blanket that I have to wear my hair the same way of, like, every second of my life."

0:42
"I put it in a half-up pony like this and I tie it every single day. I can't wear it any way else. I try to wear it down and it just makes me wanna... jump off a cliff. And there's, like, [makes a whooshing motion, referring to her damaged pieces], I can't wear it down. Ever. And then I put little pins in the shorter pieces."

ABOVE: Shorter pieces and damage in the first year

ABOVE: Ari's strategy

In 2015, she told Zach Sang that, during her first single 'Put Your Hearts Up' (2011), she didn't feel like herself with red hair, and couldn't feel like herself until she moved on from everything Cat Valentine.

Aftermath

As a woman, expectations to keep things interesting are high, so it didn't take long for Ariana Grande to be met with some flack about her unwavering hairstyle. On January 19, 2014, Ari wrote a Facebook post explaining her hair situation and the different things she's tried before finally finding a hairstyle she felt comfortable in. Later that week, she sat down with Mix 104.1 (Radio.com) where she stated that, "for four years, I had a character's hair, which was very uncomfortable, and I cried about it all the time because I didn't like it."

Even after dyeing her hair back to brown, Ari continued to talk down on the current (at the time) state of her natural hair, referring to it as "little pieces of hay" that made her look like a "scarecrow" whenever she wore it down.

A year later, Ariana posted a photo of her healthier hair and natural curls on Instagram with the caption, "long time no see."

During her Cat days, Ariana was all about that 50s housewife aesthetic. She loved florals and pastels and 50s silhouettes. She was usually seen with curly hair and often decorated it with bows, especially when her hair was red. After that, she grew to favor ribbons in her ponytail.

ABOVE: "Girly, throwback, retro 50s pin-up; floral, anything feminine." -Ari describing her style, 2013

Cat
...as in pussy, not Valentine.

"I feel like I'm not the only one who does the cat ear thing though?" - Ariana, 2014.

Ari frequently spoke about wanting to change up her look, but would stress the fact that it couldn't be done until it grew out into a healthy length that she'd be content with. She retired the hair ribbon and when Halloween of 2013 hit, she clung onto cat ears. She loved the look so much that she would continue to post photos of her sexy/cute cat costume even weeks after October ended. When she was in Tokyo in early 2014, she found a bunch of headbands and cat ears that she would wear frequently. The ears quickly became her "thing" that fans all over would copy.

ABOVE: Ariana embraced other types of animal ear headbands, such as antlers during Christmas performances and bunny ears for Dangerous Woman. All, of course, with variations of her ponytail.

During her 'Focus' promo, Ariana moved on from constant cat ears and began to "channel Carrie Fisher" with her double knots and buns. When asked about it, she referred to herself as a "big Star Wars fan" and simply "wanted to do something fun" with her updo.

Sisanie (On Air With Ryan Seacrest): "Is it 'cause you like wearing cat ears all the time?"
Ariana Grande: "I mean, I guess - that might be the similar vibe, but I don't really know."

ABOVE: It started with braided knots in Tokyo, Japan.

ABOVE: Evolving into what Ryan Seacrest describes as, "two top-knots that are sideways."

She would revisit the knots her 'Everyday' music video and Dangerous Woman tour.

Dangerous Nonna

https://instagram.com/p/BMu14spBnhQ

Speaking of 'Focus', Ariana wore a white wig for the music video, inspired by her grandmother's (called Nonna) hair. The wig brought back the original form of the Ariana Grande ponytail, but with the 'bangs' falling passed her face, rather than being pinned up.

ABOVE: White wigs. Not long after 'Focus', Ari sported a very light - almost white - blonde wig in Sing's music video for 'Faith', ft. Stevie Wonder.

KISS FM UK: "Is it coming back?"
Ariana Grande (2015): "Maybe! I think it was a really fun thing for the song, but I worked so hard to get my hair healthy after filming Victorious. Then they gave me a wig for a couple of years 'cause it had a lot of bleach to get that red colour, you know? Um, so yeah, I dunno! Maybe in the future."

Bang Bangs

https://instagram.com/p/BIOQkaJAf3a

She's rocked a bang before, but these ones were the real deal. In 2016, Ariana made her first big step into some form of hair change with a fringe bang. Ariana took selfie after selfie with her new hairstyle, but she wouldn't always fully commit to them in public appearances, which gave a lot of people a reason to believe they weren't real to begin with. Ariana Grande's bangs were real, she just became some kind of a pro at twisting up and hiding smaller pieces of her hair.

ABOVE: A 'big' hair change (in the context of Ariana Grande), but she still styled it the same. Every time.

ABOVE: Sometimes she'd get a little WILD and tackle that ponytail with a crimping iron.

Be All White

https://instagram.com/p/BkeVaF7Bizl

Celebrity hair stylist Chris Appleton gave many women grey locks, and Ariana was one of them. She kept the ponytail, but lowered it significantly and left it incredibly long. This was a look she seemed to have the most fun with in terms of colour; she experimented with lavender, different shades of grey, dark roots, solid colour, etc.

ABOVE: Ariana Grande in the future (see: Dangerous Nonna section).

ABOVE: History of a long ponytail.

Presently, though, she is back to brunette and high ponytails. Chris Appleton tends to accessorize her hair with rings, pearls, braids, and all sorts of other shenanigans, at least.

Either way, that ponytail is going nowhere. Ariana loves the way she looks and feels with a ponytail, and it becoming her signature only fuels that, naturally.

ABOVE: She's been a fan of the hair rings for quite some time, but has recently clung onto them in similar ways she seems to cling on to SNL scraps.

ONTD Original: Happy Birthday, ONTD! Today is ONTD's 14th birthday

This day in 2004, ONTD was created! Just a little celebrity gossip community on LiveJournal, who would have guessed that we'd still be here 14 years later, with over 380,000 entries made, and over 66 million comments posted?

Sorry that my birthday graphic is a measly screenshot

I decided to do a little look-back at the first posts made on June 26, 2004, but it seems that the community wasn't active until July 8, 2004. With no headlines, photos, sources, tags, or formatting.... I present to you some riveting first few posts:

The first ever ONTD post:
Britney Spears buys her own engagement ring for her upcoming marriage to Kevin Federline

-A post notifying the community that Hilary Duff will be on the Jay Leno show that night. (Lots of H.Duff hate in the comments!)

-A mish-mash of celebrity news that really encapulated 2004: JT/Cameron Diaz, Britney prenup speculation, Hilary Duff and Joel Madden stuff, and "Does Kristen hate Tobey more than I do?"

ONTD, how long have you been here? Favourite memories?

ONTD ORIGINAL: 4 Times Nicki Minaj was OTT on Social Media in 2018

With the release of her highly anticipated fourth studio album that is sure to flopQueen being just around the corner, Nicki Minaj has become more active on social media this year in order to promote her music. However, with this promotion just came embarrassing stunts and clapbacks, so OP has compiled the four times Nicki was the most embarrassing this year. Nicki is horrible for more serious reasons, but this post is meant to showcase her more surface-level social media misdeeds.

1. June 19: Clapping Back at Hater on Instagram

In response to someone commenting that she has a “numb booty,” Nicki Minaj goes in, saying that the commenter looked like a raccoon with a receding hairline, before suggesting cosmetic procedures.
2. June 15: Clapping Back at Man Calling Her a Hypocrite

Nicki Minaj got in some hot water over an interview where she seemingly slut shamed sex workers while being known for having a pretty sexual image herself. In response to a person calling her a “hypocrite” she told a person on Twitter to “suck my dick.” She then went on to brag about her new single Bed’s relatively weak chart performance.

She then told her 80 million followers to “beat dat nigga like he stole smthn” in a now-deleted tweet
3. May 24: Clapping Back at a Commenter Who Calls her Fans “12 to 15 Year Olds

In response to a commenter that appeared to call the Barbz immature, Nicki Minaj made the fully mature decision to clap back and call the commenter "pathetic", saying that the commenter only showed her pussy on her page
4. April 25: Claps Back at a Fan Who Says Nicki Needs a “Top 5”

We all know that Nicki Minaj doesn’t care about the charts even though she posts about all of her chart achievements on Instagram so she took it to heart when a fan told her to step her promo game up in order to get a top 5 single. Nicki Minaj corrected her, saying that “Queens don’t panic” and that people who complain about what she posts will catch that block.

ONTD Original: Hits That Were Reworked and Re-Recorded

𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐃 𝐎𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥:
𝐇𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞-𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐝

Artists like to revisit and record their hits for different reasons - like to either celebrate how far they've come, to get the proper licensing after their contract with their label is up, or because they find another opportunity to get a good coin. For whatever reason, most fans can agree that it's unnecessary to do so because the final product never matches up to the original. If you're generous enough, maybe you can still enjoy the revamped songs on its own.

Here are 10 hits that were recorded a decade+ since its original recording, and see if they are worth the listen

10. Mariah Carey - "All I Want For Christmas Is You (Extra Festive Version)" (2010)

Re-recording of: "All I Want for Christmas Is You" (1994)
For: Merry Christmas II You
Notable differences: Orchestral intro, different ad-libs here and there
Justice to the original? Meh - Mariah is the queen of re-recording songs to fit remixes and such. There was another questionable re-work of this song featuring a cult-member singer, but this version does not necessarily add anything nor ruin the og.

9. Third Eye Blind - "Semi-Charmed Life" (2009)

Re-recording of: "Semi-Charmed Life" (1997)
For: Rock Band
Notable differences: instrumentation, reverb on the vocals
Justice to the original? No - this sounds like it was recorded by the legendary Smash Mouth or something, but it's a downgrade.

8. Donna Lewis - "I Love You Always Forever (2008 Version)"

Re-recording of: "I Love You Always Forever" (1996)
For: In the Pink bonus tracks.
Notable differences: Percussion, some piano bits replaced with synths
Justice to the original? Sure - If this were to pop up in a store somewhere, it's almost indistinguishable to the original.

7. Soft Cell- "Tainted Love (Re-Recorded / Remastered)" (2009)

Re-recording of: "Tainted Love" (1981)
Notable differences: Vocals, mastering
Justice to the original? Meh - you can tell the aging in the singer's voice.

6. Kim Carnes - "Bette Davis Eyes" (2007)

Re-recording of: "Bette Davis Eyes" (1981)
Notable differences: Vocals, mastering
Justice to the original? Sure - it just sounds like a clearer version of the original.

5. Taylor Dayne "Tell It To My Heart" (2016)

Re-recording of: "Tell It to My Heart" (1988)
Notable differences: Vocals
Justice to the original? Yes - this does not have the same comically dramatic singing like the og, but considering the 20+ years difference, she pulled it off.

4. S.E.S - "Love [Story]" (2017)

Re-recording of: "Love" (1999)
For: Remember anniversary album.
Notable differences: Production, added rap verse and interpolation of another song
Justice to the original? Yes - this recording is more upbeat and added a new fresh vibe to it, so it's an improvement.

3. INOJ - "L Y D (Love You Down)" (2017)

Re-recording of: "Love You Down" (1997)
Notable differences: Vocals, production
Justice to the original? No - the vocal recording sounds amateur and weak. The instrumentation sounds a little cheap, a downgrade.

2. Christina Aguilera - "Genie 2.0" (2008)

Re-recording of: "Genie in a Bottle" (1999)
For: Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade of Hits
Notable differences: Everything
Justice to the original? Meh - it's very different to the original so there's not much of a comparison, however it's great on its own.

1. TLC - "No Scrubs (20th Anniversary Version)" (2013)

Re-recording of: "No Scrubs" (1999)
For: 20th Anniversary Japanese Album
Notable differences: Slight differences in vocals and production
Justice to the original? Sure - it's pretty damn close to the original.

Any other examples of this?

ONTD Original™: A Retrospective of "Dead Like Me" On the 15th Anniversary of Its Premiere Date

$
0
0
On June 27th of 2003, Bryan Fuller's soon to be short-lived series Dead Like Me (a first of many) premiered on Showtime. Starring Ellen Muth as Georgia "George" Lass, a young aimeless woman who finds herself killed in a freak accident and recruited to be a Grim Reaper, the series also starred Jasmine Guy, Mandy Patinkin, Callum Blue, Laura Harris, and Christine Willes, among others.

A uniquely comedic take on the afterlife, George was assigned to assist people by removing their souls just before they died, leading her and her Reaper friends into all sorts of ridiculous and dark situations, all the while still having to work a full time job to pay for "living". In the meantime, Georgia's family and her younger sister Reggie struggle with grieving her loss and trying to move on and have a normal life. One of Fuller's early shows, he left at the end of the first season because of behind the scenes debacles, and continued to make the also short-lived Wondefalls starring Caroline Dhavernas and ONTD's fave Pushing Daisies of a similar vein.

There was also the Dead Like Me: Life After Death movie, but lets keep this post positive. Below I've listed the top 10 rated episodes on IMDB (in order of release) as well as some clips from the show!

1.

Georgia 'George' Lass is an emotionally lost, 18-year-old slacker whose life changes (or ends) when she is killed by a toilet seat that falls from the sky after being separated from the orbiting Mir space station which hurtles to Earth.

Immediately, she discovers that the afterlife does indeed exist, where she has been assigned a job as a 'Grim Reaper.' It's her job to reap the souls from the living and guide them to their eternal reward. Besides coping with her new job, she must learn to deal with being young and starting out and of course, being dead...

2.

George takes Delores and her cat to the vet, where they encounter a young pet Reaper. Rube reaps a yoga instructor, and George's family prepares for a ceremony dedicating her gravestone.

3.

George experiments with being a mean girl at work, while Mason has a reap who wants to attend his own funeral. Daisy takes her reap to church, and Reggie goes clothes shopping.

4.

George must deal with an efficiency expert at Happy Time. Rube hangs out at the Post Office all day, Daisy does some speed dating, Roxy works the airport and Mason chases after a bike messenger that owes him money. Meanwhile, Joy and Clancy work on finishing their divorce while making Reggie join the band.

5.

The other reapers are jealous when George draws a VIPR - Very Important Person Reap. Daisy restores a cynical priest's faith and Reggie visits the scene of her sister's death.

6.

Mason and Roxy fly the friendly skies on T&A Airlines. Rube teaches grade school. George phones home and Joy resists buying in to her mom's philosophy.

7.

Ray and Mason fight for Daisy's affection, and their game turns into something worse when Daisy wants to breakup with Ray. In a hospital, George must convince an elderly woman of her death. Joy is looking for a job at Happy Time, where she finds out more information about the time George worked there. Rube seeks help from Penny, a another reaper, to find his daughter.

8.

Mason receives a purple post-it, possibly his final reap before moving on. Roxy investigates Ray's disappearance, questioning Daisy. George attends another going-away party at Happy Time. Reggie accidentally lets J.D. out, and searches for the dog.

9.

George finds out that her mother was in Happy Time looking for her file. Rube goes to see his daughter after receiving upsetting news from Penny. Ray continues to cause problems even after his death and Mason runs into a bit of trouble with Kiffany.

10.

It's Halloween and reaper legend has it that the reapers can be seen as they were when alive; a serial killer stalks a neighbourhood, the reapers collecting his victims as he goes, George getting the bad guy; Joy and Reggie pay a late night visit to George's grave.

ONTD Original™: Who Would Win? - 'Sailor Moon' Edition

Fighting games were the rage in the 1990s. One of the most popular anime/manga franchises ever, Sailor Moon, even partook in the trend. But what if our favorite sailor-suited warriors really were pitted against each other? Who would win? Well, here's a rather involved, detailed, and possibly unnecessary analysis that may answer that very question.

Two of the most powerful forces in the ten Sailor Soldiers are Sailor Moon and Sailor Saturn. If the two fought, someone would quickly say Saturn would be the obvious victor. But is this true? Sailor Saturn, the Soldier of Ruin, has the ability to destroy worlds with her Silence Glaive. Her appearance is usually an omen for something bad about to occur. Saturn is not the one to call for the small stuff. She is designated for doomsdays and the apocalypse. Sometimes the only way to defeat a seemingly indestructible, all-powerful evil is to obliterate the world for which it resides in. In the manga, Saturn was revealed to be the one who destroyed the Silver Millennium once it was ravaged by the Dark Kingdom. In order for rebirth to take place, the old must be removed. Of course with Saturn's "gift" of destruction comes a price - she, too, must die. And Saturn accepts that and has no qualms as she is fully aware of her duty as the Soldier of Ruin.

If Saturn has one weakness, it would be her dependence on the Silence Glaive. As far as fans know, all of her power lies inside of it. In Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (ep. 172), Queen Nehelenia knocked the Glaive out of Saturn's hands, rendering her powerless. That same season (ep. 198) , Galaxia destroyed the Silence Glaive (as well as Sailor Pluto's Garnet Rod). Some fans think Galaxia did this deliberately because she realized Saturn could not kill her without her Glaive.

Then we have the titular hero of the franchise - Sailor Moon. She's described as a clumsy crybaby by most outlets, which undermines her ability as a Sailor Soldier and as the heir of the Silver Millennium. Moon is not a born fighter. She relies on her surprising agility and quick reactions to evade danger in the average skirmish. When the battle becomes a life or death situation, though, Sailor Moon is always ready to step up and do whatever it takes. Armed with her Legendary Silver Crystal, Moon has access to awesome power. With it, she can purge enemies of evil, or she can counter and neutralize negative and destructive energy. The history of the Silver Crystal was never exactly stated in the series. Who created it and where did Sailor Moon's past-life mother, Queen Serenity, get it from? In the manga and in both anime series, it was an heirloom passed down to Moon/Princess Serenity. Yet in the live-action adaptation of the manga, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, the Silver Crystal appeared to belong to Princess Serenity from the start. How she obtained it, though, was not explained. Since Sailor Venus was more privy to memories of the past than her comrades, she was aware of how powerful Sailor Moon is. In fact, it was Princess Serenity that destroyed the Moon Kingdom in the past. Her heartache over Prince Endymion's death caused her to unleash the power of the Silver Crystal, which consumed the planet (ep. 38). So not only did the Sailor Soldiers in the live-action drama have to fight the Dark Kingdom, they had to make sure history did not repeat itself for the sake of humanity. As Princess Sailor Moon, Serenity's sorrow -- fueled by Mamoru's death -- spurred the end of existence once again in the present (ep. 49).

Sailor Moon's reliance on tools, wands, and the Legendary Silver Crystal puts her in a similar position as Saturn. The aforementioned Sailor Soldier is likely able to exhibit innate power without weapons, but it still is not clear if Saturn can reap any damage without her Silence Glaive. So if it came down to a match between Moon and Saturn, the truth is this: either could win. Saturn could dissolve the planet with a drop of her Glaive; Moon could possibly do the same with her Silver Crystal. But only Moon can restore and heal, which some argue is a more powerful gift than ruination.

Some fans have wondered which of the two water-based Sailor Soldiers is the most powerful: Sailor Mercury or Sailor Neptune? Why do two Soldiers share the same element? Well, they actually do not. Mercury controls water while Neptune is the Soldier of the Sea.

Sailor Mercury's intial ability was to generate mist or fog. In the classic anime, Mercury disarmed explosives in mid-air with her bubbles (ep. 24) and quelled feral animals under a Youma's thrall (ep. 15). She also amplified the voltage of Sailor Jupiter's "Supreme Thunder" (ep. 41, 53) on two occasions. Water is not a great conductor of electricity, but the minerals within water are. In the face of an onslaught of lava (ep.45), Mercury sealed herself inside a giant bubble. This offered her some protection amid the searing heat. In Sailor Moon Crystal, Mercury transformed droplets into a barrage of raging water, thus catching Zoisite completely off-guard (ep. 6). She did this again when Cyprine turned the Sailor Soldiers against each other (ep. 33): Mercury changed her mist into a stream, which she used against Uranus and Neptune. Basically, Mercury knows how to work her attacks. The other Soldiers are not as proficient with theirs.

Furthermore, Mercury has sway over temperature of water. Neptune does not. Even when her powers were new to her, Sailor Mercury could simply alter the coldness of her mist as a way to confuse the enemy. She advanced to a level where she could then create ice (and snow in Crystal).

Sailor Neptune's totem deity is the Roman god of the sea, but her powers are not really watery. That is not to say there is no trait of water to her "Deep Submerge" technique. In the classic anime, Neptune hit a Daimon (ep. 113) with said maneuver, and as a result, the monster was sprayed by a blast of water. Could Mercury manipulate Neptune's attacks then?

Neptune has good control over her powers, and she exhibits quiet strength as well as confidence in battle. Neptune wields the Deep Aqua Mirror, but she is not reliant on it during combat.

So if the two Sailor Soldiers that govern water were put against each other, who would win? Mercury is resourceful and also a literal genius. So she could possibly figure out a way to defeat Neptune sooner or later. Or turn Neptune's attacks into ice. On the other hand, Neptune's powers are considered to be stronger because she and her Outer peers were blessed with greater abilities so that they could protect the Moon and Earth from invaders. And as already evident in her history as a Sailor Soldier, Neptune has no qualms with sacrifice for the greater good. Mercury, much like Moon, is not as readily able to do the same. At least not without good logical reasoning. Sailor Neptune may be the better-trained warrior, but Sailor Mercury is ingenious.

Here are two Sailor Soldiers that rarely interact with one another - Sailor Mars and Sailor Pluto. So who would win - the Soldier of Flame or the Soldier of Time?

Sailor Mars is known to be passionate as well as aggressive, even more so depending on the adaptation. She has limited clairvoyance and is also a trained miko (Shinto priestess) with some skill in archery. She is capable of hand-to-hand combat, but not like Jupiter or Uranus are.

Sailor Pluto is the keeper of the Space-Time Door. As such, Pluto can manipulate time and control mystical doorways. As seen in both anime, Sailor Pluto will not shy away from physical fights. Her Garnet Rod doubles as a staff that she can use to block attacks or strike down opponents. It is also the source of her power as she uses it in every one her techniques. Since the Rod is adorned by her sacred Talisman, the Garnet Orb, Pluto is imbued with even more power.

Rei's live-action persona, which is arguably the most perfect on-screen adaptation of Rei/SailorMars to date, was a good interpretation of manga Rei - minus the boring parts. She and Usagi did not always get along, but it was not a constant bickering feud between them either like in the classic anime. Live-action Sailor Mars often reined in her emotions, much to the detriment of her potential strength. Once she tapped into those emotions, she fully awakened as a Sailor Soldier, and she was able to defeat Nephrite singlehandedly (ep.23). The death of a fellow Sailor Soldier also gave her a power boost (ep. 47).

Now, Sailor Pluto is an enigmatic person in many regards. Very little is known about her in comparison to her peers. Unlike the rest of the Sailor Soldiers, she was likely not born into a modern-age family, and she was not shown going to grade school or hanging out with her friends. As far as fans know, Pluto was always a lonely Sailor Soldier (though it is speculated that she is the daughter of Chronos). She stood at the Space-Time Door for a number of years, preventing anyone from exiting or entering. So Pluto has way more experience than Mars.

With all of that in mind, it probably will not be surprising to say that Sailor Pluto would beat Sailor Mars in a 1-on-1 duel. Pluto has more powers at her disposal, some of which include time manipulation. In theory, Pluto could temporally stop Mars in her tracks before she ever makes a move. This is if fans are ignoring the fact that Sailor Pluto's "Time Stop" technique is taboo and not meant for trivial matters. Now, if Mars knocked the Garnet Rod away from Pluto, the fight would be more fair; Pluto could not use any of her offensive attacks ("Dead Scream," "Chronos Typhoon"). With the exception of using her ofuda with "Evil Spirits - Begone," Mars needs no items to project fire. So as long as Mars can get Pluto's Garnet Rod away from her, she might stand a chance against the formiddable Solder of Time. Especially if she lives up to her alias of "Soldier of Passion" and just lays into Pluto.

This is a match that every fan would want to see - the two physically strongest Sailor Soldiers going toe to toe. In one corner, you have Sailor Moon's loyal and brawny best friend with a penchant for cooking - Sailor Jupiter. And in the other corner is the alluring and mighty leader of the Outers - Sailor Uranus. These two have long since made peace over their differences, but forget about that momentarily. Who would win if Jupiter and Uranus finally threw down?

Before Uranus showed up, Jupiter was considered the powerhouse of the core five. When the D.D. Girls were sent to kill the Sailor Soldiers in the classic anime (ep. 45), they knew to take out Jupiter first. And when it came to protecting her princess from one of Queen Nehelenia's minions (ep. 171), Jupiter proved to be very resilient. Makoto does not have the judo training that Haruka does, but she can fight when the need calls for it. She is too stubborn to back down if challenged.

Sailor Uranus is considerably the fastest of the ten Soldiers. It would make sense since her element is technically air. She can move faster than Sailor Jupiter can probably throw a punch. When the two clashed in Sailor Moon S (ep. 96), Uranus won the spar, but she did not leave unscathed. And in Sailor Moon Crystal, Jupiter held her own against Uranus, even when the latter was wielding her Space Sword (ep.33).

When it comes to offensive attacks, Sailor Uranus has an advantage because she and her Outer comrades were given stronger attacks to begin with. Sailor Jupiter can still do some damage. She took down a dragon with one shot of "Sparkling Wide Pressure" in Sailor Moon R (ep. 84), and she destroyed a Daimon all by herself in Sailor Moon S (ep. 105). It goes to show that a guardian Sailor Soldier can defeat a bad guy by herself as long as she aims to do it. Would that determination be enough to overpower Uranus? Maybe not since Uranus has taken out enemies with little effort on her part.

Sailor Jupiter probably will not be beating Sailor Uranus any time soon, but she would definitely make Uranus work for her win.

Fans may already know the answer to this query: could Sailor Chibimoon, daughter of Sailor Moon, defeat the Soldier of Love, Sailor Venus? Well, humor the idea that the petite, pink menace could be a challenge of some kind for Venus.

Despite popular belief, Sailor Moon is not the leader of the Inner Sailor Team - Sailor Venus is. Venus has the most experience of the main five Sailor Soldiers in the series, seeing as she "awoke" first. And in most continuities, she has the most knowledge of their past lives.

In the manga and in every other adaptation of it (excluding the classic anime), Sailor Venus wears a chain around her waist. She skillfully uses this in most of her attacks. Additionally, Venus is agile from a combination of volleyball and fighting as a Sailor Soldier.

Chibiusa did not become a Sailor Soldier until later in the series. She was also considerably younger than when Usagi and the others became Soldiers. Sailor Chibimoon had to catch up quickly. In the '90s anime, Chibimoon only ever had one offensive active attack ("Pink Sugar Heart Attack"). She rarely performed it well either, possibly because it was new or experimental magic. Chibimoon did not exist in the original Silver Millennium after all so her newfound powers had to come from somehwere else. As for her portrayal in Crystal, Chibimoon was more capable as a Sailor Soldier. She was able to knock Mistress 9's true form down when the other Soldiers failed to (ep. 37). As Super Sailor Chibimoon, she and Super Sailor Moon combined their wands to perform "Double Rainbow Moon Heart Ache" together (ep. 38). They did something similar in the Sailor Moon SuperS movie, too. It should also be noted that Sailor Chibimoon possesses the future's Silver Crystal in the manga and in Crystal. She does not have the same control over it like her mother (past or future), but with practice, she could.

In her current state, Sailor Chibimoon probably would not be much of a challenge for Sailor Venus. She has never even defeated an enemy by herself. Everything considered, a few more years of experience would do Chibimoon some good.

The title Sister Outsider finds its source in her poetry collection The Black Unicorn (1978). These poems and the essays in Sister Outsider stress Lorde's oft-stated theme of continuity, particularly of the geographical and intellectual link between Dahomey, Africa, and her emerging self.

13 Horror Movies to Watch This Summer [ONTD Original]

It's officially summertime for some of us in the world, and currently heating up where I'm at in New York City. Sounds to me like it's time to crank up the A/C, grab a cold drink and put on a horror movie!

These are likely - and hopefully - films you haven't seen before, but they're all available on Prime (at least, while I was making this post). Why choose Prime over Netflix? While Netflix may be more popular than Prime, the selection for horror is not as large or varied. Prime has a shit ton of old movies, indie movies, and classics. To narrow down their insane collection, for the purposes of this post I focused on films that were good for a ~summer vibe. I interpreted this liberally and not always in an obvious way - these films fit my list because they either take place at a body of water or in the outdoors, or while the characters are on vacation.

Fair warning, I enjoy quite a bit of the "so bad it's good" kind of horror movie. Prime has many, many bad horror movies. Bad horror can be good! Not saying these are all "bad", but there is a nice helping of the ridiculous here. Hopefully there is something for everyone on this list!

tN2sMw.jpgThe Sand
Director: Isaac Gabaeff
Stars: Brooke Butler, Meagan Holder, Cleo Berry, Dean Guyer, Cynthia Murrell, and Mitchell Musso

It feels appropriate to kick off this list with a ridiculous, but actually kind of good, horror movie about hungover and unlucky beach goers fighting against a carnivorous sand monster who's on the attack. While partying, the group of friends discover some sort of gigantic egg on the beach - but are too busy getting wasted to really think about it. The next morning, a small group wakes and realizes something's wrong when one of them steps onto the sand, only to meet her death. Oh, this must be why everyone else from the party is gone - presumably, the sand monsters ate them during the night! The survivors must figure out not only how to stay alive, but also how to get off the beach. A few are trapped in their car, two are in a lifeguard house, and one wakes up in a trash can. Can they do it? As far as b-movie creature features go, this actually had some decent acting. Of course, most of the special effects were laughably bad, but no one watches these kinds of movies and expects to be blown away by that sort of thing. Personally, I enjoyed it because it delivered exactly what I wanted in a beach horror.

55coD0.jpgFirst House on the Hill
Director: Matteo Saradini
Stars: Christine Scherer, Chloe Farnworth, Kristian Messere, Umberto Celisano

Let's switch it up and go from sunburned beach horror to horror confined indoors. For Valerie and her three friends, their weekend in Malibu has just become hell. After a night of partying at their house rental, the friends discover a dead housemaid's murdered body. Trapped inside the house, they do what anyone else would do in the situation - turn to a tarot card deck for help, and that's when things get spooky. Fans of artsy horror like Dario Argento's Suspiria will enjoy the film's dreamy cinematography, colorful lighting and synth soundtrack - as long as they can set aside the irrational behavior of the protagonists that gets the plot moving.

Y87SlP.jpg Le Périple
Director: Vincent Orst
Stars: Olivier Martial, Tony Zarouel, Tella Kpomahou, Lola S. Frey

Contaminated tap water creates an infected population in this French zombie film. Le Périple (The Trip) wastes almost no time getting into the action: We see our first zombie almost exactly at the ten minute mark, when our main character, Salah (played by the sexy Tony Zarouel), is on foot and in a deserted town. Saved by a good Samaritan, Salah joins a small group of survivors in a chalet. However, it doesn't remain a safe space for long, and Salah and the remaining members of the group take their fight for survival into the mountains. Not only do they have zombies to worry about, but there's also the non-infected who are armed and ready to kill anyone. If you've been wanting a new survival movie to watch, this well-done indie film may be your thing.

ojqdjn.jpgMega-Shark vs. Crocosaurs
Director: Christopher Rey
Stars: Jaleel White, Gary Stretch, Sarah Lieving

To go from the well-made Le Périple to this nonsense seems almost criminal, but we gotta vary it up a bit. Yes, the graphics are bad, and yes, the plot is totally implausible, BUT THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT FUN. If you disagree, then clearly this is not the kind of movie for you so just skip to the next one in the list. Anyway, we had our adventure with sand monsters in The Sand, but it's not summer without a movie where gigantic animals wreak havoc on both land and water. Crocosaurus emerges from an illegal diamond mine in the Republic of the Congo while the Megalodon destroys its way through the Atlantic, starting with a US Navy Worship where Lt. Terry McCormick (Jaleel White - yes, that's Steve Urkel!) is working. Mega-Shark meets his match with Crocosaurus in this battle to the death, which is actually - of course - a sequel to Mega Shark versus Giant Octopus. If you're looking for something to get you in the mood for the upcoming summer release Meg (also about the megalodon shark), then this Asylum classic could be just your thing.

pyT8Ro.jpgSolo
Director: Isaac Cravit
Stars: Annie Clark, Daniel Kash, Richard Clarkin

No, this isn't thatSolo. This Canadian horror film is about a young woman, Gillian, who becomes a camp counselor for the summer. The thing is, to prove herself as a counselor, she has to camp solo on a small island for two nights. The other camp counselors believe the island to be haunted. Soon after her arrival, things get creepy and tense, and Gillian discovers she's not alone.

For a horror debut, the film is quite good with solid acting from Annie Clark as Gillian and well-composed shots. While I don't think seasoned horror fans would be surprised at the plot points, watch this one if you're up for a flick with a small cast confined to one location.

6w2Mez.jpgAcross the River
Director: Lorenzo Bianchini
Stars: Renzo Gariup, Marco Marchese, Lidia Zabrieszach

Let's get seriously spooky with this Italian-Slovenian artsy, psychological horror. Ethologist Marco Contrada is performing his wildlife census operations in the remote wilderness on the Slovenian border when he spots a white dress floating down a stream - extremely odd, considering he's totally isolated in the forest. After trapping a fox and mounting a camera on the animal, he goes to his RV to watch the live footage. Contrada sees the fox enter an abandoned village, and the next day, decides to seek out the strange (and, unbeknownst to him, cursed) place, which lies across a flooding river. Ironically, it is now him who becomes trapped, and the audience is helplessly watching things go from creepy to what the hell just happened.

If you need constant gore and/or jump-scares then this isn't for you, but if you are intrigued by what I could call "Atmospheric Italian folk horror meets David Lynch" then turn up the sound, shut off the lights and prepare to be fucked with. This may be my favorite from the list...

EOMAZE.jpgLake Nowhere
Director: Christopher Phelps and Maxim Van Scoy
Stars: Wray Villanova, Laura Hajek, Charles Gaskins.

Retro horror fans rejoice, this throwback to 70s and 80s slasher horror is maybe just what you need to get your summer started. Bonnie and her group of friends head to a cabin in the woods to party, but of course they're not alone: A masked killer is stalking them. Horror fans who are old enough to recall the days of bootleg, scratchy VHS tapes will enjoy the film's opening of fake commercials and trailers leading into the feature. The filmmakers didn't simply slap on a vintage filter using iMovie;Lake Nowhere truly feels like you're watching something that was recorded off the TV in all of its grainy, vertical tape rolls glory. But aside from the nostalgia factor, the movie itself is a fun, cheesy, and gory ride. If you're a fan of slashers you know exactly what to expect, and it's delivered - and with a pretty good ending. Plus, it's only 50 minutes long, so you can pair with another movie on this list for a double feature!

4Qp3om.jpgStomping Ground
Director: Dan Riesser
Stars: John Bobeck, Tarah DeSpain, Jeramy Blackford, Justin Giddings

If you hate summer and can't wait for fall, here's a film to put you in that autumnal mood. Annie and Ben, a couple from Chicago, visit Annie's home of North Carolina for the Thanksgiving holiday. While there, Annie's childhood obsession with hunting Bigfoot is revealed to Ben. Annie's ex, Paul (who is clearly still into her), and their friend Jed decide to take Ben out Bigfoot - or, Boojum as they call him - hunting.

It's almost a little bit of cheating to include this on this list, as this is not so much horror as it is about two people whose relationship may or may not last the film. I thought the acting was realistic and the characters felt authentic, so much so that I absolutely loathed Paul. If you want to watch a fun relationship drama that just happens to have a cryptozooligical bent and a touch of gore to it, this is your movie.

VxyUeo.jpgCrocodile
Director: Tobe Hooper
Stars: Mark McLachlan, Caitlin Martin, Chris Solari

Brady and his annoying group of friends - and one adorable dog named Princess - are partying at Lake Sobek in southern California. Brady's friends are jerks who don't respect his relationship with Claire, but Brady is also a jerk who doesn't respect his own relationship with Claire - he cheated on her with Sunny. I guess this romantic nonsense is there to help us care about the characters, but if you're like me, you'll be rooting for the crocodile the entire time. After all, the humans were the ones fucking with her eggs, and it's payback time.

The crocodile herself is shown in just the right amounts and her attacks are hilariously gory. It's no Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but it IS Tobe Hooper. There are some nice touches that recall his most famous film. Crocodile is stupid good fun. (Also: And after I watched this, I had a bad dream about a big crocodile trying to kill me in the desert - so it's pretty funny that this is the only movie on this list to give me nightmares!)

sdWkIV.jpgWither
Director: Sonny Laguna, Tommy Wiklund
Stars: Patrik Berg-Almkvisth, Lisa Henni, Patrick Saxe

Imagine Tyra Banks saying "The Evil Dead... but make it Swedish." That's what this movie is, although it's not a remake. More like a homage: A group of friends travel to a cabin for a weekend and unfortunately for them, there's evil lurking in the basement.

This is for the horror fans who want gore! You want gore? This movie has it. While there's not much in terms of substance, Witherhas some pretty good special effects. Don't get too attached to any of the characters... this is definitely a bleak film.

4sSkV0.jpgUninvited
Director: Greydon Clark
Stars: George Kennedy, Alex Cord, Toni Hudson, Clare Carey

From demonic house guests to demonic house cats...

The orange tabby may look innocent, but she's got the devil inside her! Kitty cat escaped from an evil lab to end up on some rich asshole's yacht. Ordinarily I don't like seeing animals in film, but the cat is fat, fluffy, and just about the cutest villain of all time. All these corrupt men in the movie have GOT to go and this cat is taking em down one by one.

me when the cat is killing all the men

Uninvited has the absolute worst special effects out of any movie in this post, but it also gives us this iconic shot of the demon rising up in between bottles of alcohol as it's getting shot at, so... Also, every time the cat was seen and heard crying, but never moving its mouth, I died laughing. And did I mention how FLUFFY this damn cat is?! WATCH THE MOVIE FOR THE CAT!!!

4H9gA7.jpgAfflicted
Director: Derek Lee and Clif Prowse
Stars: Derek Lee, Clif Prowse

Derek Lee and Clif Prowse both wrote, directed and starred in this Canadian found-footage gem. The two friends are about to embark on a crazy year-long trip around the world, video blogging the entire adventure. Of course, this is a horror movie so their trip doesn't go as planned. :)

Personally, I'm a fan of the found-footage subgenre, and Afflicted is one of the better ones I've seen. The story moves at a great pace and the horror kicks in quickly, giving the audience just enough time to get to know and care about the characters. Thanks to the excellent special effects, many moments in the film had me gasping. The acting was excellent as well. If you're not a fan of the shaky cam motif in found footage, know that this movie has some fairly stable photography throughout. I'm honestly so pleased by this film, but also a bit annoyed that like none of my horror friends told me about it before?! WTF???

6bedGV.jpgStar Leaf
Director: Richard Cranor
Stars: Julian Gavilanes, Tyler Trerise, Shelby Truax

And finally, we have come to the end. Did I save the best for last?

James, just back from Afghanistan and suffering from PTSD, is visiting his stoner best friend Tim, and Tim's girlfriend Martha. They take James on a trip to find the star leaf - a pot plant that's "not of this world... It is not of this earth!" DUDE MEANS THAT LITERALLY: Star Leaf was in fact brought to earth by aliens. James, Tim, and Martha head into the pot forest to camp and smoke, and while there must not disrespect the aliens by breaking any of the rules. But because this is a movie, the characters do something to get the aliens mad...

This movie actually isn't as terrible as you may expect, despite the ridiculous as hell premise. Why watch it? Fuck it, it's summer 2018, we're in the darkest timeline, and this movie is... something. Is it good, though? Hmm, good enough. It's definitely hilarious at times - it's meant to be funny - and although has some serious themes doesn't really take itself TOO seriously. Is it horror? Nah, not really. It's a sci-fi "thriller" (although very light on the "thrills") but I'm putting it on this list anyway. I welcome our alien overlords TBH!

Special thanks to zyuranger for letting me know about some of these movies on prime!

ONTD Original:
Homoerotic Moments by Hetero Actors

🌈 warning: nsfw post ✨

Pride month may be over but you know what? It's still a year-round thing for some of us. Let's unearth the first possible times we saw homoerotic moments in mainstream media via famous actors, and when we were curious using the internet to search up gay things on Youtube as a youngin (don't @ me).

And to reiterate what we already know:
Is it tacky when hets get booked and receive the credit and praise for gay roles

But in the meantime, are we gonna make it worthwhile as it is entertainment

Is this post remotely diverse

Sadly, no. But we need ONTDers to educate a sis when gay poc pop culture was in art now, suddenly the koons is OP.

This post was inspired by deformschool and some DELECTABLE Christopher Meloni gifs.
Whether it's an actual gay scene, provocative interactions, or just a clip of the male physique, here's 7 homoerotic moments by hets.

7. Ashton Kutcher (Dude, Where's My Car?)
Premise: Guys wake up after a drunk night of partying and have to find their car.
Scene: Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott run at a stop light with a couple (cameo by Fabio) in the other lane and, by male nature, the drivers try to one-up another.

Looking back this was kinda tame, but a trigger nonethelessT.

6. William Fichtner (Go)
Premise: Journey of a drug deal from the perspective of three characters.
Scene: William Fichtner is a police detective working to lure in the drug dealer. In the meantime, he pitches the idea of a Amway-type business to actors in the suggestive manner above.

I caught this movie on tv once and was just confused about the whole thing. That's a million dollar ass shot though 👀.

5. Bill Paxton (Weird Science)
Premise: One genius teen and his friend build the perfect woman via #weird#science.
Scene: Again, another curious scene where Bill Paxton takes off his towel when he finds Wyatt in Kelly LeBrock's underwear.

This scene was a little random, but hey it's another million dollar ass shot. RIP Bill Paxton.

4. Ian Somerhalder (The Rules of Attraction)
Premise: A love triangle between college students.
Scene: Ian Somerhalder has a crush on James van der Beek's character and imagines himself making a move on him.

Okay... I didn't know how pretty Ian was back in the day.

**Also interesting notes in the description of the source from the director.

3. Jude Law (Wilde)
Premise: Tells the autobiography of Oscar Wilde and his imprisonment for 'gross indecency' (homosexuality).
Scene: Jude Law's character (and irl Wilde love interest) Bosie teases Stephen Fry (Wilde) in a get together of fellow rentboys.

Good godT
Also, RIP Jude's hairline.

2. Charlie Hunnam (Queer As Folk UK)
Premise: The change and growth between two 29 year old gay friends and a 15 year old gay student.
Scene: Charlie Hunnam gets into the bathroom for a quickie which happens a little too quick.

Waiting on that possible reunion project.
Also wanna mention that Vince is precious and wholesome.

bless

1. Christopher Meloni (Oz)
Premise: Cliques of inmates of a correctional facility try to survive prison life.
Scene: D*ddy Christopher Meloni falls in love with one of the inmates.

I think I need to get into this show

ummmmmmm... a MAN

Bonus: Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them)
Premise: Newt Scamander has to find magical creatures that escaped from his suitcase, while there's tension between wizard and muggle relations.
Scene: "Percival Graves (Gellert Grindelwald in disguise) gives Credence Barebone a Deathly Hallows symbol necklace - his symbol."

This isn't even supposed to be sexual tbh I don't know what to really think of this scene but it did #trigger somethin strange, and I think other people experienced the same

Gay ONTD, what were gaykening (gay awakening) moments for you?

The world knows him as Domenico Moretti, the ruthless, cunning, and aloof CEO of Moretti, Inc, a.k.a. her boss. Gifts of (mis)fortune come in threes, they say, and it’s certainly the case with Misty, whose life is turned upside-down by Domenico Moretti’s three shocking revelations. One, he’s a werewolf (who’s also a prince). Two, he wants her in his bed—him, the guy who actually had to file a TRO against an obsessive supermodel. And three, he has a proposition she never—and she means never—ever sees coming.”

Summer of ‘84 trailer

Blood Fest trailer

Critters is an 80s cult-classic in the horror genre featuring small, violent creatures from outer space. The source article details the real-life UFO encounter called the Kelly-Hopkinsville Encounter as the inspiration behind the film. Kelly and Hopkinsville are two towns in Kentucky, and the incident occurred at a family’s farm house, where many witnesses claim to have been attacked by extraterrestrials over the coures of one evening. The Kelly-Hopkinsville Encounter is so famous that even Spielberg was inspired, and he of course went on to make the classic film “E.T.”

ONTD Original: The Golden Age of VH1 Reality Shows, aka the "Of Love" Universe

It has come to my attention that there are some people who do not know about VH1's classic reality series Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, I Love New York, Daisy of Love, Charm School, Real Chance at Love, and I Love Money. This ignorance is shameful and #sad.

I have taken it upon myself to educate the world about these gone, but never forgotten, gems.* (You can thank me later.)

 photo ontd 4 flav tuxedo_zpsuzyneclj.jpg

In 2003, Vh1 debuted The Surreal Life, a celebrity version of MTV's The Real Life. A bunch of B-list celebrities lived in Glenn Campbell's former mansion in L.A. It is there, on Season 3, where Danish model Brigitte Nielsen and Flavor Flav, of rap group Public Enemy, met.

 photo the surreal life_zpsib5bpewa.jpg

They fell in love and their relationship was documented on VH1's spinoff series Strange Love. But their love was doomed, and Brigitte eventually left Flav alone on the tarmac of her private jet.

 photo ONTD STRANGE LOVE_zpsor9kuztk.jpg

VH1 gave Flav his own dating show in 2006. Flavor of Love, which ran until 2008, gathered a bunch of classy women to compete for Flav's money heart.

 photo ONTD 1 FOL_zpsjpmdj2zf.jpg

Tiffany Pollard was so popular that she couldn't be contained by merely one show, and she soon had her own VH1 shows: 2007's I Love New York, 2008's New York Goes To Hollywood, and 2009's New York Goes To Work.

VH1 made another entertaining piece of shit classic with Rock of Love and Rock of Love Bus (2007-2009).

 photo ONTD ROL_zpswatwaeqi.jpg

The network also aired two seasons of Real Chance of Love in 2008-2009, starring two brothers who competed for Queen New York's heart on her dating show.

 photo 600x600bb-85_zpsgezls2bj.jpg

Daisy of Love (2009) was another dating show featuring Daisy de la Hoya, whom Bret Michaels rejected on Season 2 of his show.

 photo vwz5n5_zpserlnmj0b.png

This brings us to Flavor of Love: Charm School, Rock of Love: Charm School, and Charm School with Ricki Lake, three gloriously trashy educational seasons that ran from 2007 to 2009, in which castoffs from the previous shows were put into finishing school to become proper ladies.

Finally, VH1 took even more rejects from its shows and pit them against each other on I Love Money, a game show in which the contestants did ridiculously stupid challenges for cash.

 photo i-love-money_zpsp80nv2rb.jpg

Alas, this golden era was not to last. VH1 was filming a show called Megan Wants A Millionaire, in which golddigger Megan Hauserman of Rock of Love is wooed by several rich guys. However, after one of these men was convicted of murdering his ex girlfriend, the network pulled the plug on the show after only three episodes.

The fourth and final season of I Love Money aired in 2010, ending the golden age of VH1 reality shows.

*I am not counting For the Love of Ray J or Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It, because they are boring and they suck.

What is your favorite VH1 reality show?

R.I.P. the post that I accidentally deleted two times, I give up.

ONTD BOOK POST: Children In Peril

$
0
0
Our childhood is generally the most vulnerable and shaping time of our lives. Horror and thriller works often shy away from harming those most vulnerable because the implication is too much. And often rightfully so, with the number of tales of terror that inevitably lead to sexual abuse for shock factor.

But what of those few authors who understand the line? This post contains some of the scariest and yet (hopefully) untriggering works. The ones who got it right.

From children born evil to those desperately running away from danger and perhaps even triumphing over it, there are novels out there to make us shiver and think back on the old days with horror, without trying to traumatise us (looking at you, Stephen King's It and whatever that sewer scene was).

SECOND CHILD by JOHN SAUL

DISCLAIMER: John Saul is the overlord of all things awful happening to children. The man has written over 30 books intended for adult audiences, but guaranteed to scare underage horror fans to death. I named my cut for his best-known work, but decided to go with a slightly lesser-known one for your pleasure.

Meet Melissa. She's a sweet, quiet young girl accustomed to the finer things in life but has no need for them. She's shy, chubby and not materialistic and while her father dotes on her, her mother could not be more different. Same goes for the local rich kids who mock her relentlessly. Then comes Teri, the half-sister from the father's first marriage. Her house has burnt down and so a young girl who was poor to begin with is left with nothing. Her father welcomes her with open arms and Melissa is beside herself with the news that she's got a sister. But Teri seems to enjoy her cosy new lifestyle a lot, to the point where Melissa is beginning to see enemies everywhere...

DECEMBER PARK by RONALD MALFI

Think Stephen King's 'It', by a novelist who doesn't resort to unnecessary shock tactics to enthral his audience. A slow-burn tale of 5 kids whose farming town has been rocked a serial child killer living amidst them. The main character's dad is on the police force, giving the kid ample opportunity to sneak into his files or overhear things he's not supposed to. Being a group of bold, outcast children with that familiar youthful arrogance, they decide it's up to them to hunt the mysterious "Piper" down. This has devastating consequences.

SOUR CANDY by KEALAN PATRICK BURKE

This is a novella, counting only 67 pages. But it's a nailbiter by a gem of a horror writer. We've all been that person in the supermarket, watching an exhausted-looking parent try futilely to control their raving, excitable, candy-enthusiast child. Phil is no different, watching a little boy demanding his dead-eyed, wild-haired mother give him more sour candies. But after the tumultuous mother and child duo happen to crash their car straight into his, Phil wakes up to a son he's never known. A son he never conceived. A son with an endless hunger for sour candy.

PRODIGAL BLUES by GARY A. BRAUNBECK

TRIGGER WARNING: contains severe child abuse, though handled respectfully and through the eyes of one particular traumatised, vengeance-insistent teenager

A man experiences some car trouble and as he's waiting for help, a van drives by with a very familiar-looking girl in the backseat. As he later recognises her face on Missing Persons posters, he's confronted by none less than the girl herself in a diner. He returns to his hotel to place the necessary phonecalls, only to be caught by surprise and kidnapped by a gang of adolescents, including the young girl he'd been trying to save. Turns out they all need his help, but for a purpose much greater, something that may very well be his final move.

FANTASTICLAND by MIKE BOCKOVEN

I debated whether or not to include this one because it's not all teenagers, but I think it counts. A terrible hurricane wreaks havoc on a Floridian theme park, and the aftermath is something that needs to be read to be believed. Written as a journalistic effort, this book tells the tale of staff members young and old, trapped inside a theme park for weeks. Though many are hoping to simply stay put and survive, some of the younger staffers are growing increasingly restless and it doesn't take long for a violent hierarchy to establish itself. Think 'Lord of the Flies' with adolescents in a modern day setting.

Male Crushes of Disneychannel

I thought I checked out of Disneychannel several years ago, but since I'm still watching Raven Symone in Raven's Home, that counts as still being tuned in I think? Golden era DC (2000s) was everything, and it managed to bring us some appearances of cute guys and #snacks for the youngins. Do you remember any of them?

Erik von Dettin (Brink!)

Erik has iconic movies to his credit like being the #backstreetboyclone in Princess Diaries and voicing Sid in Toy Story, but also the DCOM classic Brink! where OP just learned that the title was the nickname of his character. The blonde and sun-kissed tan look was very of its time which fits cause he's remembered more as a relic. Who knows, maybe the upcoming Toy Story sequel will call him up again for a voice acting opportunity.

Michael Trevino (Cow Belles)

Michael Trevino's TRUE big break before the Vampire Diaries was playing Jackson in Cow Belles. This was one of the floppier DCOMS, but what stood out was that handsome farm boy we'd all #hoe around for. And let's talk about them sleeveless tops he wore in every scene.

Idk who i'd rather be in this gif

Gary Cole (Cadet Kelly)

If you forgot, he was the military step-dad in the classic Cadet Kelly starring walking candids queen Hilary Duff and Christy Carlson Romano. There was something about the 70's porn stache the sternness in his character that made him extra charming when he was attempting to become a fatherly figure.
*In tune of Fall_In_Line.mp3*
One, two, three
Right, two, three
Shut your mouth, stick your ass out for me

Yes S*r!

James Possible (Kim Possible)

Voiced by Gary Cole, Dr. James Possible is a scientist who can also lay it down as a husband and father. Super smart and caring... what more could you want? He just has that look that says he'd treat you right.

Call me
Beep me
If you wanna [redacted] me

David Henrie (Wizards of Waverly Place)

Larry from That's So Raven turned into a MAN right before out eyes since his starring role in Wizards of Waverly Place as Justin Russo. I don't know which season it was when we got to see more of that #physique being sculpted, but [insert slutacious pun related to magic and wizardry].

Wingardium leviosa this ****.

Jean-Luc Bilodeau (16 Wishes)

Being part of the tired trope of the under-appreciated bestfriend being the love interest all along in 16 Wishes made Baby DaddyJean-Luc win us over since being the annoying brother in Kyle XY. 16 Wishes felt dated upon arrival, but Jay's hopeless romantic dorkiness and loyalty was lovable.

Drew Roy (Hannah Montana)

Drew Roy as fellow musician Jesse in Hannah Montana has to be the top male love interest feature of Disneychannel TBH. The chemistry was real, f*ck that cheatin Jake Ryan ho. Congrats to miss Stewart for moving onto bigger and better things. Last time I checked he was Miley's final bf. And don't second guess your memory, cause he also played the bad boy in iCarly. Still DELECTABLE in both roles.

Raviv (Ricky) Ullman (Phil of the Future)

Adorbz, presh, etc. I don't think Raviv has enough appreciation for his time on DC in Phil of the Future and Pixel Perfect. Apparently the tea on him is that he [allegedly] has nudes, and based on his social media accounts, he's still doing some acting and some activism.

Mark Taylor (Seventeen Again)

[the superior] Seventeen Again was a straight to vhs film but most of us know it from playing on Disneychannel. We all were shook to see the young-grandpa Mark Taylor after the magic youth soap revealing a foineT man. *Countess voice* This boy got a jawline for daays.

Who was your Disneychannel crush?

BOOKS & COMICS
This week we have Sherrilyn Kenyon discussing her cursed attempts at getting to Salem, Massachusetts; author Justina Ireland talks subverting the white gaze in her writing; a new supernatural series is launching at Dark Horse Comics; and filmmaker Haifaa Al-Monsour discusses her film Mary Shelley about the famous author.

Have you ever been to Salem, ONTD? Author Sherrilyn Kenyon almost didn’t make it there, and in the article she mentions all the bad things that got in the way of her visiting Salem. When she was finally able to visit, her and her son went to the Witch Museum and the memorials to the Witch Trials. Kenyon claims she’s traced family back to Salem: “We had family who accused family,” calling that “tragic.”

  • On being called “the most controversial figure in young adult literature" by Vulture magazine: “It’s pretty funny that in the age of male YA authors being accused of sexual assault that I would be considered controversial. I mean, my big claim to fame is criticizing a few books.”

  • Ireland is scared of horror and doesn’t consider Dread Nation to be horror.

  • Explaining what she means by “subvert[ing] the “white gaze” in publishing”:When we talk about publishing, we have to consider the gatekeepers, the folks who decide what makes it to the shelf at the front of the store, or who gets in the store in the first place. [...] They don’t necessarily have to write to center white identity, but there has to be a level of the narrative that white readers can connect with otherwise it will be very difficult to even get to the table.”

  • On taboos in writing:“[W]hile I would write an Asian or Latinx character, I would never write a story that deals with issues of identity. Those stories are better coming from authors with that lived experience.”

  • Ireland’s next book is Star Wars: Lando’s Luck, which will be the first book in the Flight of the Falcon series from LucasFilm Publishing.

  • Saudi Arabian filmmaker Haifaa Al-Mansour discusses her film, Mary Shelley, which tells the story of the author. Elle Fanning stars as the title character.

  • She read Frankenstein as a child in Arabic, and as an adult, when she read the script, began researching about Mary Shelley. She says it’s important to have female figures like Shelley, who did something different and succeeded.

  • The movie is not about the monster. She says Frankenstein is described as a “monster of piece of work”, but it’s actually about “a direct result of everything that happened to her life as a woman.” She says it was sad to know the monster and not Shelley, and criticizes the book considered “masculine.”

  • She discusses being ridiculed in Saudi Arabia as a woman trying to make films, and how that made her feel sympathetic to what Shelley went through.

  • The rest of the interview discusses other topics, including Shelley’s rebellious spirit and Al-Mansour says Shelley is not celebrated enough, working with a young cast and casting Percy.

  • The interview is less than 20 minutes long, definitely recommend listening to it.

  • A new supernatural horror series is being launched by Dark Horse Comics.

  • Christofer Emgård (Mirror’s Edge: Exordium) as writer; Tomás Aira (War Stories, Night of the Living Dead: Aftermath) is the artist.

  • Synopsis: Hannah Vance believed her faith in God could survive anything. But when her helicopter is shot down behind enemy lines, she will fight and kill on an ever more savage battlefield, desperate for a way home. On the horizon, an evil waits for her—and freedom, of a sort.

  • Issue #1 goes on sale on October 24.

SERIES & SHORTS
Happy #SciFiSunday! This week we have a short sci-fi film by Elan Dassani & Rajeev Dassani about synthetic humans and is available to watch online right now; and an interview with filmmaker Huriyyah Muhammad, who has created and directed the supernatural webseries Keloid.

  • Seam is a 20 minute short film, available to watch at the source, and is celebrated for its diverse, international cast.

  • Synopsis: After a sleeper agent explodes in Hong Kong, a synthetic woman named Ayana (Rakeen Saad) and her husband Yusef (Khaled Al Gwairi) are targeted by a human military commander (Oded Fehr). The desperate couple are pursued in a thrilling chase across the vast deserts of Jordan which culminates in a spectacular climax at the border of the synthetics' haven - a region known as the SEAM.

  • Seam is written and directed by Elan Dassani & Rajeev Dassani.

  • OP note:Seam is freaking awesome, if you are at all interested in sci-fi then you need to watch it. For a short film it was very impressive in terms of story, acting, cinematography and effects. The film is in 3 languages, but mostly Arabic, and has subtitles.

  • In the interview, Huriyyah Muhammad discusses how her love for writing brought her to filmmaking and ultimately to making Keloid, which is “a supernatural drama” web series about an atypical boy who has special powers such as telekinesis.

  • Keloid was created for the Black TV & Film Collective, a non-profit in NYC whose “mission is simply to increase opportunities for artists of color working in television, film and digital." It was produced “as a web-series because through web-series, producers have the ability to tell great stories with smaller budgets.” It cost 10K to produce the first season.

  • Muhammad also discusses casting the mother and son; how she wrote simply from experience; and more about the Black TV & Film Collective.

  • To watch the series please go to http://www.keloid.tv/.

GAMING
Survival horror is coming to your Xbox and PS4!

The survival horror game Monstrum, originally released for PC back in 2015, is now being brought to Xbox One and Playstation 4, both as a physical and digital release! No release date is set yet; game trailer at the source.

MUSIC
Do any songs come to mind when you think of iconic horror movie themes?

This article explains how and why iconic theme songs to horror films have become a thing of the past. Some notes:

  • The music industry itself has evolved.

  • It’s not as feasible to pull in well-known musicians to record theme songs as it once was.

  • There’s a cheesy level to spelling out the plot of a movie in a song, which is seen as nostalgic these days and wouldn’t hold up in serious movies.

Be sure to read the whole article at the source!! It also lists some of the best theme songs to 80s and 90s horror films with tidbits for each song!

TELEVISION
Swedish sci-fi actress Moa Gammel recently revealed that Netflix is interested in adapting her podcast, Ufopodden. More information under the cut!

  • Gammel is working on the pilot along with Inger Scharis, “using the UFO archive at Norrköping.” The show will be a supernatural drama.

  • On her interest in UFOs, she says. “I’m a UFO agnostic. These mysteries, these phenomena that defy any natural explanations, are extremely fascinating.”

  • If you are interested in her UFO podcast, the second season was just launched on July 3rd on Sveriges Radio P3.

Women of horror: Interview with Gigi Saul Guerrero

  • In this interview, Mexican-Canadian horror filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero discusses her nickname, “La Muneca del Terror” and the Luchagore Productions, of which she is co-founder and director.

  • She says that she has “stuck with Latin Horror over the years and it has really worked. It is not necessarily which target will get you most exposure, but instead which target understands you as an artist."

  • Her favorite film that she’s made is EL GIGANTE, which is also the goriest of all her films.

  • She also discusses the importance of festivals, saying that “EL GIGANTE is a prime example: A WB exec was watching at a festival, contacted us and suddenly, we made La Quinceañera for Warner Brothers. Filmmakers must go and/or submit to festivals as much as they can.”

  • She says if she has to die in a horror movie, she would pick dying like a “bruja”: “Burn at the stake and laugh at everybody!”

  • La Quinceañera is available to watch on the Studio Plus app, and is also being screened at the upcoming Fantasia Festival as a feature.

The Latest Steven Universe Bomb Shows off a Lesbian Proposal/Wedding, Returning Characters, & More!

$

This past week's episodes of Steven Universe labled as "The Heart of the Crystal Gems" were huge in terms of plot and character development following the aftermath of the Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond bombshell. Under the cut is a small breakdown of what happened in each episode.

Now We Are Only Falling Apart

  • Following the Rose Quartz revelation Garnet unfused with Sapphire running away feeling upset that the woman who told them that "they were the answer" was lying about her own identity.

  • Pearl and Steven find Sapphire with Pearl explaining the "origin" of Rose Quartz and why she started her revolution.

  • The three of them return back to the temple to discover that Ruby is now gone.

What's Your Problem

  • Amethyst and Steven decide to go around Beach City to look for Ruby while it seems like Amethyst is more concerned with goofing off.

  • Amethyst later says the only reason she is goofing off is for Steven's sake to make sure he is ok after the revelation with Steven proceeding to call Amethyst "the most mature Crystal Gem."

The Question

  • Steven and Amethyst find Ruby hanging out with Greg where she decides that she wants to live her own separate from everyone else and chooses to imitate a comic by acting like a cowboy from the wild west.

  • During Ruby's journey of self revelation she confesses to Steven that although she is having fun she really misses Sapphire and wants the next time she fuses with her to be something special so Steven gives her an idea from the cowboy comic she was reading.

  • Ruby returns to the temple to ask Sapphire "A question" (I'll let the video explain for itself).

Made of Honor

  • While making invitations for the upcoming wedding Sapphire is sad realizing that her old friends from the time of the war won't be there.

  • Steven decides to go and unbubble Bismuth in the temple. After a slight mishap where Bismuth believes that Rose also bubbled former crystal gems and discovers about corruption. Steven explains to her everything that has happened including the Rose Quartz revelation.

  • Bismuth still feels guilty for attacking Steven and is afraid to approach her old friends because of that but Steven tells Bismuth to meet with them saying that they all miss her a lot. Bismuth returns and gifts Ruby and Sapphire with wedding bands.

Reunited

  • THE DAY OF THE WEDDING! the episode begins with Steven singing about the wedding and meeting up with the other crystal gems about their repressed feelings of guilt from the Rose revelation.

  • Ruby and Sapphire are wed and fuses back to Garnet. During the reception though Yellow and Blue have returned to try and awaken the cluster but the cluster fights back fusing to a giant arm buying Steven and gang more time.

  • The crystal gems try to fight off Blue Diamond but are proven weak due to her power of making them feel the same sadness and grieving she has been enduring but Lapis returns and crashes the whole barn on her not being effected from Blue's power due to Lapis's own pain she has felt in the past.

  • Yellow finishes fighting of the cluster arm and lands as well poofing Peridot and crushing Steve in the ground.

  • Steven wakes up but as a ghost with the ability to enter to other people's mindscape giving all the other crystal gems encouraging thoughts. During this time Lapis is also poofed as well.

  • Steven is able to get to Yellow and Blue Diamond and is finally able to convince them that he is Pink Diamond.

  • Steven is awakened back to his own body seeing everyone including the Diamonds concerned over his well being.

And of course all we are left with is a small preview saying that "Steven Universe will continue on your Cartoon Network."
