This is post is an excerpt from a forthcoming post on Ariana Grande's relationship timelines.

May was a busy month for Ariana Grande. As well as continuing to promote her single "No Tears Left To Cry" and her forthcoming album Sweetener, she also ended her relationship of almost two years with rapper Mac Miller and started dating SNL actor and comedian Pete Davidson, who ended his own two-year relationship with Cazzie David. The pair followed up their eventful month by announcing their engagement on June 11. Right? Right?

Except some fans and celeb-watchers have noticed discrepancies in the public timeline of their whirlwind romance.

	2017
June 5	Ariana appears wearing a yellow diamond on her engagement finger at her One Love Manchester concert, prompting fan speculation that she and Mac Miller are engaged.
November 17	Pete Davidson's girlfriend Cazzie David wishes him a happy birthday on Instagram.
November 23	Mac and Ariana are papped driving together in Los Angeles. This is the last time they are seen publicly together in 2017.
	2018
January 29	Ariana makes a lowkey solo appearance at the 2018 Grammy Awards and skips the red carpet. A seating chart shows she was seated solo during the ceremony next to Mike Will Made-It. There is no seat labelled for Mac. She doesn't appear in the telecast, apart from briefly being spotted backstage by some fans on Twitter.
January 31	Pete posts a series of posts to his Instagram story. They include the statement, "I'm really sad and in insane pain", and a photo of himself with Cazzie, followed by the message "Idk what I did to make you hate me so much, but I'm sorry." He deletes the posts 20 minutes later.
March 5	In her (and their) first public appearance together in several months, Mac and Ariana attend an Oscars Party together.
March 13	In a since-deleted tweet, Mac tweets, "I only exist when you need something." (He scrubbed his social media last month).
April 16	Mac is one of several friends of Ariana's to appear in a "No Tears Left To Cry" sweatshirt on Ariana's Instagram to promote her forthcoming single.
April 20	"No Tears Left To Cry" is officially released.
April 21	Mac and Ariana make their last public appearance together at Coachella weekend two.
May 4	Cazzie David posts a photo with Pete on Instagram captioned "bffs".
May 7	Ariana attends the Met Gala solo, which isn't unusual, but some fans notice that Mac doesn't like any of the photos from the event she posts on Instagram, although they are still following each other at the time.
May 9	TMZ reports that Mac and Ariana have broken up.
	This is where things start to get fuzzy...
May 10	Fans speculate that a blind item about a recent celeb breakup involving cheating is about Mac and Ariana, and an Instagram commenter backs up the allegation.
May 13	Ariana and Pete are spotted arriving at a party together in New York. Ariana has a cloud-shaped phone case that matches one Pete was spotted with earlier.
May 17	Mac Miller is arrested for DUI and hit and run in the San Fernando Valley after blowing nearly twice the legal limit.
May 18	Pete's tattoo artist Jon Mesa posts photos to Instagram of the "crazy coverup" he did on Pete's right tattoo sleeve the previous night. The coverup covers the tattoo of Cazzie he's had since at least April 2016.
May 21	Pete and Ariana are "casually dating".
May 23	Ariana tweets her statementcalling her relationship with Mac "toxic" and "scary".
Last week of May	Cazzie goes to Botswana with her sister, evidenced by her Instagram story posts.
June 1	Ariana posts a photo with Pete on Instagram, apparently celebrating their relationship. However, the photo shows Pete without his new tattoo sleeve additions, meaning the photo had to be taken before May 17, when he covered up his tattoo of Cazzie.
June 2	Ariana is spotted wearing what appears to be her engagement ring from Pete at iHeartRadio and 102.7 KIISFM's Wango Tango concert in Los Angeles.
June 2	Cazzie posts to Instagram, "Been in Africa, what'd I miss?"
June 3	Tattoo artist London Reese posts a photo to Instagram of Pete's Dangerous Woman bunny mask tattoo.
June 11	Pete and Ariana "are engaged."
June 12	Pete's jeweller Greg Yuna reveals Pete ordered the ring "at the end of May" and that it took "two weeks" to make. Since Ariana was seen with the ring on June 2, this means the latest Pete could have made the call would have been around May 18, the same weekend he covered up his tattoo of Cazzie.
June 17	Sources say Pete and Cazzie were on "an indefinite break at the time he fell for" Ariana.
	Bonus Sleuthing!
	Podcast Come To Brazil points out a video Cazzie David made for Vogue in 2017 where she describes an 8-week breakup plan she formulated after a breakup three years earlier. In the video, she identifies week 6 as the perfect time to "post that calculated, attractive selfie". Six weeks before her "Been in Africa, what'd I miss?" Instagram post, Pete played a poorly-received show at an Ohio college where he reportedly talked about his girlfriend who he'd "probably marry". The podcast questions whether, given Pete and Cazzie's and Mac and Ariana's documented relationship turbulence as early as January and the non-specific "indefinite break" and "time [Pete] fell for" Ariana, it's possible that he and Ariana were dating as early as April. (Full credit to Come to Brazil for this theory that I discovered after I'd written this post)

This was looking like it was going to be way more exciting when I was halfway through writing it than it ended up being, but some humble opinions from OP:

• The public breakup of Mac and Ariana's relationship closely resembles that of her most recent previous public relationships (including Big Sean and dancer Ricky Alvarez)


• Ariana apparently prefers to have a new relationship ready to present to the public before announcing her breakups (more on this in my Ariana Relationship Timeline post, coming soon! And with infographics!!).


• It's pretty safe to assume this, along with Mac's role in her single promotion, is PR strategy.


• It's also pretty obvious that Mac and Ariana were on the outs well before their official "breakup" date of May 9 and before Ariana confirmed the breakup on Instagram, as early as April but possibly even earlier.


• Exactly when Pete and Cazzie split is less clear, but it's possible that her "bffs" post on May 4 could have similar intent to Ariana calling Mac her "best friend" in the Instagram story post where she confirmed their breakup.


• Given the timing of Pete's tattoos and their photos together, it's obvious he and Ariana have been extremely close since mid-May at the very latest, before it was publicised that they were ever "dating casually"


• The "official" date of the engagement also doesn't make much sense based on the jeweller's comments.


• In this instance there's no smoking gun that either of them were cheating, but I think we can pretty safely say this is not a new couple alert.

VH1's classic television series The Flavor of Love and its subsequent hits, including Rock of Love, I Love New York, and Charm School, are under-appreciated culinary gems for elites with the most sophisticated palates. Here, we have collected some of the finest recipes for foodie connoisseurs to enjoy.





Remove whole (3 lb.) chicken from packaging. Do not rinse. Dress with raw vegetables, marshmallows, jam, and leftover lo mein noodles. Microwave on the "chicken" setting for several minutes.





Season steak liberally. Heat olive oil in pan; sear steak on both sides for 3-5 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes. Eat dramatically with a very sharp knife.





Prepare biscuit dough on floured surface. Bake at 450 degrees F until golden, about 10 minutes. Put one single biscuit on a plate and look at it while ignoring your guest.





After imbibing several alcoholic beverages, prepare chocolate pudding mix according to directions on package. Dump on the floor.





Shuck fresh oysters. Use knife to detach oyster from shell. Spritz with human vomit and serve on the half-shell on a bed of ice.





Remove tray from box. Cut film. Do not season with basil. People who eat basil are lame.





Combine Nacho Cheese Doritos and a tequila of your liking by ingesting them together. Vomit into toilet.





Uncap jar of premade salsa and pour over suitcase full of clothes. Serve in open suitcase.





Store several ketchup packets in a pillowcase with stolen, dirty socks for several days. Suck ketchup out of packets.

🍎 Released on June 19 2012, 7 years after Extraordinary Machine, The Idler Wheel... is Fiona's boldest, and barest album to date. "This is the stuff that I really needed to get out, this is the excrement of my life, the excrement I was trying to exorcise out of me." Fiona (listed as "Feedy" in the credits) produced the album under the radar along with her touring drummer Charley Drayton ("Seedy"). Her record company found out she had an album done when she handed it to them. This freedom is manifested in her uninhibited approach to its creation. "I just like that feeling of: 'I'm in charge, I can do whatever I want."

"I really let everything just get spit out. I would not second guess anything."

🍎 Piano-driven arrangements and intricate melodies are still at the core, they are however decked with unorthodox percussion and homespun sounds that articulate the tension, and illustrate Fiona's psyche. In addition to creating loops, playing percussion, piano, and keyboards, Fiona's production credits include "field recordist", "truck stomper", "dance partner", and "Daredevil thighs".

"I wanted to make everything as stark as possible, so you could hear everything".

The Idler Wheel... is a journey inside Fiona's mind as she makes sense of her inner-workings, waxes poetically about exorcising her pain, sees herself through others, then reconciles everything with her brain. This post is a content heavy revisit of the record, mostly written in Fiona's own words, featuring her drawings and writings.


🍎 Genesis:


"It must have started in 2008. Or 2009. I don't know! I have no idea. It's weird to think that there was 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011. Where've I been? What was I doing? What was that year about? ... It was very casual, and I wasn't fully admitting that I was making an album, I got to use the time in the studio to inspire me to finish other things rather than feel like I was finishing homework to hand in. It wasn't a lot of pressure. And the record company didn't know I was doing it, so nobody was looking over my shoulder". I think the first phrase that I wrote off of for this album was at the beginning of the song "Left Alone". I wanted to use the phrase "moribund slut," which led me to use the phrase "orotund mutt."

"On the first night of recording Charley, we walked by this bottle-making factory. The door was open and you could hear a machine running. We both had our recorders with us and we agreed that the sound would be good for the song "Jonathan". Juan, the guy working the night shift at the factory, let us walk through and record the sound of the machine.That was the moment where I said, "Oh, we're not making demos-- this is going to be it. Me and Charley are going to make a record right now." And then it just got fun.

"On these songs, I really let everything just get spit out. I would not second guess anything. There were songs I would write about breaking up with somebody before I broke up with them, months and months before I broke up with them. And I'd go back to that song, and now it makes sense why I wrote that."

The album was finished in 2011, but Fiona delayed the release until her label found a new president in 2012, because she "didn't want her work to be mishandled amid corporate disarray." When she finally surprised Epic executives with it, they asked if she thought the record was really finished; if there wasn't another song, a hit perhaps, still forthcoming. She told them it was finished.

Apple's camp didn't want bells and whistles for her return.
A small tour was announced in Spring 2012.


Ahead of her first performance, the album and its title were uploaded on her Facebook page on March 8th.


Footage of Fiona performing live from her first tour in 5 years intensified the anticipation.
She premiered "Every Single Night", "Anything We Want", and "Valentine" at SXSW on March 15th.


"Every Single Night" was posted on her Soundcloud page on April 23rd.


The music video was directed by Joseph Cahill in Paris, France and premiered on June 10th.


Fiona appeared on Late Night on June 18th, her first TV appearance since 2006!
She was interviewed by some guy, before performing "Anything We Want" and a cover of "Let Me Roll It" with The Roots.


The album came out the next day and she was off on her 27-city second leg of the tour!

🍎 Meaning of tidal title:


"I came up with it in a total rush. After having stayed up all night on deadline, it just came to me right after the sun rose. I didn't realize people would be like, "Oh shit, another poem." It just came out to be what it was-- sorry."

"Of course you're going to say ridiculous. Because that's what you do with me, right? I put out another long title because that's what the title's supposed to be."

The Idler Wheel is wiser

"For years now, in many of my notebooks, there would always be something about an idler wheel. I like the idea of the idler wheel—it just sits in between things, but it makes such a big difference in the way that the machine is working.
The middle, medium-sized gear is an idler gear. That concept has always been something that has interested me, but I didn’t really know why. Now I feel like it connects with feeling everything because I’ve gone through a lot of attacking things in my life—like, “There’s a problem here, I have to do something about this,” or “I’m not useful unless I’m doing some kind of job.” It’s to the point where I feel like I’m not really a full human. I used to feel like, “I’m not a functional person because I don’t go on lunch dates with friends. I hear about people having dinner parties but I never do that. I’m not really human.” But if I were to imagine myself as an idler wheel inside some big mix of gears, then I would be connected to everything. It’s not like there’s just me and then nothing. This is going to make me sound kind of flaky, but I’m like “Hands Across America” with the moon right now. I feel like I am connected to even the farthest-reaching part of the universe—as is everybody."

than the Driver of the Screw

"If you think about it, the driver of the screw has one job and he is always trying to change things. But the idler wheel is there and has this great effect on what the gears do; the idler wheel knows the machine much better than just this one thing that's performing this one task."

And Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do

"This relates to me having a problem with the whole "do unto others" thing, and also to the "ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" concept. I don't plan on having kids, but I somehow tend to read a lot about parenting and think a lot about parenting. For some reason it’s very interesting to me-I think because I’m just big on self-parenting. But I had read about whipping cords in a nautical book that when ropes get frayed at sea, you can repair the ends with whipping cords that are very strong. This goes right back to parenting- if I had a kid, and I had a choice between teaching somebody how to avoid trouble, or teaching them how to get out of it, I'd teach them how to get out of it. Because no matter how well prepared you are in life, you’re gonna fall down a hole, and if you can fix the frayed ends of things, then you’re better off. What’s valuable is to know how to make something out of that.”

The Idler Wheel... was critically acclaimed, and debuted at number 3 (her highest debut yet), selling 72,000 copies in its first week. It received a 2013 Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album (not that she cares).

"Hot Knife" was the second and final visual released in July 2013. It was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson who was also responsible for "Paper Bag", "Limp", "Fast As You Can", and "Across The Universe".

Jonathan


"Jonathan" was named after Jonathan Ames whom she was dating at the time.

"I named it that because-- and I'm saying this in the most affectionate way-- he loves attention. I felt like he deserves to have a song with his name in it. I was staying in an apartment in New York and he was just starting up his show [the HBO series Bored to Death]. I was writing this instrumental thing that I'd started after he had taken me to Coney Island, he takes all of his girlfriends to Coney Island. I was bitchy about it later on, but at the time he gave me this really wonderful day of simple joy and kindness. I was at the piano and I started writing a musical piece that reminded me of Jonathan because he is so extreme in some ways. So I was like, "Hey, I'm writing this music and the music switching between doomy and happy reminded me of you" and he was like, "Does it have my name in it?" I thought, "I'll do that for him." But then we broke up. I was like, "Am I gonna put this song on the album?" You know, this is going to sound awful, but it's also about practicality. If I ever get a boyfriend again, do I really need to be explaining for the rest of my life why they don't have a song but Jonathan does? I honestly felt like it’s just going to be the fight that breaks up my next relationship, and it’s not worth it. But then I was like, "Ah, fuck it."



Anything We Want


"I've been playing this stupid pipe thing live, but that sound was actually me at my desk with a pair of scissors, a tin full of burnt-cedar sashays, and a plastic cup. I was hitting everything with scissors and the cedar was flying all over the place. I've been in the business for so long, and my favorite thing is drums. I have a very, very big memory-- and I don't have many big memories-- of going to see the movie Tap, with Gregory Hines. During one scene, he's in jail, and there's some water dripping down, and he starts tap dancing. I just like that feeling of: "I'm in charge, I can do whatever I want."

Valentine


Fiona first played this song at Largo on Valentine's Day, 2007. She said at the time that the song was about a woman she admired and would like to be more like. In her Vulture profile, the lady is mentioned among some of Fiona's relationships: "There was a younger girl a few months ago, a beautiful dancer with whom she climbed onto her roof to watch the sky at various times of day and night."

"While you were watching someone else / I stared at you and cut myself."

"I was a little afraid of putting that line in because I didn't want to make it sound cool, because I don't cut myself. I used to be somebody that would cut themselves, and it is about wanting to feel something. But something that I do. I mean, this is totally from an actual situation of me watching someone watching someone else being really alive-not quite in the way it seems in the song-but after a while I realize that I've dug holes in my palm with my fingernails. I just tend to do things to myself that I don't realize I'm doing. Sometimes I bite my lip so that it splits and hurts, and yet I can't stop. And sometimes I'd play shows on the last run, I'd scratch my neck while I was singing, and I'd horrified to see these red streaks of blood after. I'd go back after meet-and-greets, and I would look in the mirror and be horrified because there would be, like, just streaks, like I'd gone like this. [mimes scratching her neck] There was a lot of pain going on there, so I think I was really abusing myself. I didn't realize that I was doing it, but I think it was coming from a painful place, and it was very embarrassing when I would go backstage after a meet-and-greet and realize that no one told me that I had, like, these red stripes down my neck. It was like, [in jokey voice] "I wonder why they all think I'm so sad?" [laughs]

Werewolf


I wrote that song while staying at my mother's apartment up in Harlem. Whenever there's a TV, I put on [Turner Classic Movies]-- I always have it on, while I sleep, whatever. I was recording myself doing the song for the first time, and a battle broke out in the movie that was playing. People were shooting and screaming. I liked it, but I couldn't use it from the movie, so I spent literally the next year trying to recreate that sound. I went to San Francisco for Halloween and I was hanging out in trollies recording people screaming. I would walk past a bunch of drunk people and be like: "Hey, scream!" But it would always sound wrong and stupid. But on the first morning we were planning to record, I had just gotten out of the shower and I heard all these kids screaming-- there's an elementary school across from my house in L.A. I was like, "Oh shit, that's it." I threw on whatever was right there-- which I didn't realize at the time was a pair of pants that I was going to throw away because the ass was split-- and I ran out, half-clothed, carrying my recording thing. I was standing there looking like a crazy person, watching these kids. They were jumping with balloons between their legs, trying to make them pop. In the actual song, we had to take out all the balloon pops because they sounded like gunshots. But it was so perfect.

"I realized I was trying to be friends with somebody who I used to be with but who I didn't get along with. I'm really big on that. I need to be friends with everyone that I've ever had a relationship with. A lot of my earlier songs are blaming other people and never thinking that I ever did anything wrong, because I was always trying to be completely loyal and honest and pure. It's so nice to come to a place where you can see how you absolutely enabled all these things to happen. It makes you stop being angry at people. It makes you start being more empathetic. At least now they know I'm not just completely blaming the other person. "Werewolf" was really an important song for me because it was admitting, "Yeah, all the anger that I had toward you was justified, and you are an asshole, but I was a great dance partner, and I brought a lot of that out of you."



Hot Knife


The text below is lifted from the writer who hung out and got high with her in her Vulture profile.
Its roots were probably in a Bach concert she’d seen in New York, and the Supremes song “Where Did Our Love Go?,” the place where two lines of music “crack together,” which had always given her “huge satisfaction.” Charley — whose genius as a producer, it seemed, was to fade away — had given her the mallets to softly strike the rhythm on the timpani. He’d said, “You need to say something on the piano,” so she made a waving, malevolent line in the background. And then there were the voices: hers and, later, in an incredible melodic round, her sister Maude’s. There was no looping or Auto-Tune; for hours they’d stood at the same microphone, weaving their voices in what she called “the most intimate moment of our lives together.”

I noticed an odd piece of paper. There was an insignia at the top, and it began “On January 28, 2009, Americans of all backgrounds will join together in unity and shared …”—it was part of an invitation to Barack Obama’s inauguration. On it Fiona had scrawled many words, including the name “Attenborough,” and what appeared to be notes from a nature documentary. There was writing on both sides, including, on a back corner: If I’m butter then he’s a hot knife. He makes my life a CinemaScope screen showing a dancing bird of paradise … The documentary was apparently discussing natural life, in high and low altitudes. She noted:
High: male looks alike; no need for plumes; has to gather food = only one wife
Low: more food; females raise young alone; males concentrate on—
I could not make out the last word. I asked her if she could come help. She looked for a long time. It was, she agreed, tough to figure out. Then she smiled. I could hear the word ever so slightly crackling in her dry, dry mouth. It said dancing.



"I was told so many times when I was a kid, 'I can't be friends with you, you're too intense, you're too sad all the time.' I really thought that when I made the first album that everyone would understand me, all the people who weren't my friends would become my friends. It didn't turn out that way then, but now I do feel like those people [at my shows] are my friends. And so when they say, 'I love you,' I don't care who they are. I love them back." If I have one success in my relationship history it's with the people who listen to my music. I think that they'll be there with me forever, and I'll be there with them forever. And I'm totally satisfied with that"

Royal Ascot takes place this week and we've already seen some interesting toppers. Here's a look at some of the most memorable.

One thing that has shocked us is the new and super quick engagement between Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson. How could this be? We didn't take them for this? Did we? Their sun signs, Cancer (A) and Scorpio (P) always tend to get swept up together in a water-sign disaster… and Ariana's moon in Libra is a total hopeless romantic; it's Pete's moon in Capricorn that is supposed to be logical and standoffish! Somehow though, this funny guy got his dangerous woman, a hot new pad, and now we'll see if the stars say they can make it down the aisle!



Since his Sun, Mercury, and Venus are all in her tenth house of public life, that contributes a lot as to why it's getting so much limelight. I could see him being a big influence on her career- between the cunning business savvy of his Scorpio planets in her 10th house of career and his moon in Capricorn aligning with her Capricorn rising; she's definitely going to be feeling his instincts even when they aren't necessarily the right choice for her. The hard part of their relationship is that because his Scorpio planets are in her 10th house of public life, it's where everyone can "see" it the best. There will be a general "open-secret" about when he's calling the shots, and it might be seen negatively, because Scorpio tends to carry a mysterious and suspicious vibe. However, if Ariana is trying to get #Greedy, this could be her her ride or die that will be a really solid partner and strategist in helping her achieve global domination.

Scorpio (PSun) and Capricorn (PMoon) can be rather controlling & opportunistic signs, especially in love. Hence the need to lock that shit down with a ring. One thing about Cancer (A) is that they do like possessive relationships. Nothing makes them feel better in life than someone who will always be there to have their back, deal with their mood swings, and help them with their hustle. Ari's moon is in Libra right on top of Jupiter, the planet of expansion, which exacerbates lunar-Libran's already natural need for partnership; her Taurean Venus wants stability, a rock, someone to depend on, who is L O Y A L as fuck; she's a relationship person through and through. The question is really on Pete and if he can meet her demands...

The simple truth is that both of them are serious relationship people; the only personal planet either of them have that I wouldn't interpret as such is Pete's Mars in Sagittarius. Overall, I predict that he's incredibly devoted (for now), they're going to be super strong for one another (for now), and the sex is probably bomb… just sayin, Mars in Sag and Scorpio everything else? Yeah, that boy's got it. #StarCertifiedSex.

Despite being a solar Cancer, I do think Ariana is an even keeled person, and that will probably seriously be a huge influence on Pete. Mars, our usual instigator, is very docile in Virgo (A) and, even though Sagittarius (P) is a fire sign, it's not an aggressive placement for Mars; unless of course you're questioning their convictions. As long as he feels like he's with someone who is always being open and honest with him, Scorpio won't really have any reason to pull out the stingers. Emotional betrayal is their real trigger and I do predict that Ari has grown out of some of the shit that creates that. To keep Ari, Pete is going to have to remain genuine, not be accusatory or hurt her feelings with "jokes" too much (Scorpio and their sense of humor, what can we say?), and keep the ego in check friend; don't stop forgetting that you're a lucky little dude.

Will they make it down the aisle?

I would actually predict yes! And I can actually see them being quite the power couple before having an explosive break-up that'll get ONTD posts to hit 1000+ comments again. I am highly skeptical that they're making it to the death-do-us-part part, but a solid five years and maybe a kid wouldn't surprise me at all. I don't see Ari wanting to have kids if her career stays hot for a while; she's a "collect my coins while I can" type and her soon-to-be-Hubs will probably get more popular; from this, and in addition to most guys like him peaking in their later years, and unless we suddenly stop living in a misogynistic land of pigs, she'll fizzle out around 30 and be down to settle and start living off those award show appearances.

I'm predicting the break-up would be about two things: 1) Money. Ari-girl's got Venus in Taurus and Sun in Cancer, which are hot placements for money management, highly aided by Mars in Virgo (practical) and a Capricorn rising. Pete's MUCH more a spendthrift; most Scorpio's love living lavish and Ari's moon in Libra will go along for a while, but when it comes to money, she's gonna come to her senses real quick and the pursestrings become an issue. 2) Emotional Intensity. We all know those relationships where you have fights just to have make-up sex and feel like you're #strongertogether because you survived drama together that you created for yourselves-- I can so easily predict them becoming this couple. And once you start down that path, it starts to spill over into every.part.of.your.life-- rumors get out, paranoia sets in, martyrism takes over, and then there will most likely be cheating.

Overall, I think this could be a really good match for her. Hopefully, Pete can stay grounded and they will both "grow up" together and deal with, what could be a super public relationship, in a well-mannered way. Water signs 100% get better with age. If they were both mid-40 divorcee's, I would say that this is everlasting love.

Alternate predictions:

It was all a joke and they're just best friends who wanted to see if they could get everyone to believe they're married.

Pete is actually a greedy POS who is totally using her, ends up completely isolating her, taking her coins, and she pops up in 3 years hocking a tell-all to pay him alimony.

Get those library holds ready! Here are 15 upcoming July book releases. All books were chosen from the Top 200 Most Popular Books for July 2018 on Goodreads. I narrowed them down to contemporary, mystery/thriller, romance, sci-fi, and nonfiction. I excluded any books from a series, unless it was the first book. I also focused on books that have a current high rating (I believe every book listed is rated over 3.5). All of the authors are women.

ONTD Original: Inconsistencies on The Office (US)

The Office frequently appears on lists of the most binge-worthy or rewatchable shows, despite its weaker last seasons. It's a familiar presence in many of our lives, with a big cast of characters whose combination of exaggerated flaws and realistic heart make them easy to root for.

Though the show nails its tone and comedic timing episode after episode, watching back-to-back reveals some inconsistencies that become hard to overlook once you've noticed them. We have to ask:



Pam's mom: Two actresses, two personalities?
We first meet Pam's mom Helene in S02E02-Sexual Harrassment, where she's played by Shannon Cochran.



We don't get to know Cochran's Helene too well, but she does seem dramatically different than the future iteration (played by Linda Purl) who spends much of Pam's wedding day in S06E04-Niagra: Part 1 and S06E05-Niagra: Part 2 complaining about her ex-husband's new girlfriend and hooking up with the boss Pam has been complaining about for years. She goes on to date him for a while despite her daughter's protests (S06E7-The Lover and S06E09-Double Date).



The Bernards
Andrew and Ellen Bernard make their first appearance in S04E14-Goodbye, Toby, where they are supportive and warm with their firstborn son.



In future episodes, we learn a lot about them that doesn't line up with this introduction. Andy reveals in S06E17-Delivery: Part 1 that he had been given his father's name (Walter) until his younger brother Walter Jr. was born, at which point his parents changed his name to Andrew.



In S06E22-Secretary's Day, he claims that Andrew/Walter Sr. married his secretary, despite only later leaving Andy's mom after they lose their fortune (S09E06-The Boat).




Walter Sr. is a total dick to Andy in S08E04-Garden Party. It's clear from their interactions that their relationship has always been strained and that Walter Sr. does not support Andy's pursuit of a career in paper.

Plus, his parents are played by different actors:



Bonus recastings: Both Pam and Jim's infant daughter Cece and Stanley's daughter Melissa are played by noticeably different actors in different episodes or seasons.

Jim started before Pam, but Pam was there on Jim's first day
In S02E13-The Secret, Jim says that he had a crush on Pam "when she first started" at Dunder Mifflin, which implies that he was employed there at the beginning of her tenure.




A couple of seasons later (S04E03-Launch Party), Jim and Pam are talking about when they knew they liked each other and he says that it was when Pam gave him some advice on his first day, meaning she must have been there when he started.




Meredith is an accountant and then she's not
In S01E04-The Alliance, Michael reads out what Jim's written on Meredith's birthday card: "Meredith, I heard you're turning 46. But come on, you're an accountant. Just fudge the numbers."



It later becomes clear that Meredith is not part of the accounting department, but is actually in supplier relations. It's first hinted at in S02E15-Boys and Girls where she and the other women of the office are asked to identify something they know they're good at.



It's further suggested in S05E3-Business Ethics, when she admits to sleeping with a supplier for discounts.

Finally, in S07E02-Counseling, Gabe instructs Pam to get "every department head's signature" to back her claim of being hired as Office Administrator; Meredith is included in this (with the voiceover that "there are a lot of one-person departments here, so there's a lot of department heads"); plus, we already know that Angela is the head of Accounting.



Oscar discovers hardwood floors twice
In S07E24-Dwight K. Schrute, (Acting) Manager, Dwight accidentally shoots the floor, leaving a hole that reveals hardwood underneath.



He seems pretty thrilled by it, so you'd think he would remember only a couple of years later, but in S09E11-Suit Warehouse, the staff tries to move the copier into the annex and accidentally tears up a section of the carpet again and Oscar exclaims: "Wait! Hardwood! I always knew it was down here."



Fire safety training
In S02E4-The Fire, the office staff (other than Dwight and Michael) seem calm and collected when the break room starts to smoke. With Dwight and Angela's fire safety guidance, they get out of the building in a timely manner and orderly fashion.



A few years later, in S05E14-Stress Relief: Part 1, some of the same people who knew the procedure before (including Angela) now default to panic mode when faced with a similar situation.




One actor, two parts
Nelson Franklin plays both the graphic design firm employee Pam talks to at the job fair in S04E13-Job Fair and Nick the IT Guy at Dunder Mifflin in later episodes (S06E16-Manager and the Salesman, S06E26-Whistleblower).



Blake Garrett Rosenthal is an extra in the crowd at Hay Place in S07E09-WUPHF.com, then in S9E17-The Farm plays Dwight's nephew whom it's implied he hasn't seen in many years (not even knowing that the kid had never met his father).

This is the second underwhelming week of indie movie releases in a row, which is a shame because I am really not here for Jurassic World: The Remix. Thankfully, I've still got a few indie releases from past weeks to catch up on, and I hope you do, too!

3. Watching the Detectives (2007)

To satisfy his nagging parents, a gay landlord (Winston Chao) and a female tenant (May Chin) agree to a marriage of convenience to avoid telling his parents that he's gay directed by the master Ang Lee.





7. My Sassy Girl (2001)
Based on a series of true stories posted by Ho-sik Kim on the Internet describing his relationship with his girlfriend (Ji Hyun Jun who is a Korean Icon/also starred in The Lake House which the Keanu/Sandra remade) which became a bestseller in Korea. This is the best one/not the US one!



8. The Lake House (2006)
A lonely doctor (Keanu Reeves), who once occupied an unusual lakeside house, begins exchanging love letters with its former resident (Sandra Bullock), a frustrated architect. They must try to unravel the mystery behind their extraordinary romance before it's too late. Yass, it is the OTP we deserve!



9. Chasing Amy (1997)
Holden (Ben Affleck) and Banky (Jason Lee) are comic book artists. Everything's going good for them until they meet Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), also a comic book artist. Holden falls for her, but his hopes are crushed when he finds out she's a lesbian. Why does Ben ew have a goatee in the film but in the poster he's clean shaven??



10. No Regret (2006)
Sumin is an orphan trying to balance work in a factory with study at an art college and an evening job. One night, a rich young businessman makes an advance on him during one of his driving. A really good debut film directed by famed Korean Gay director Leesong Hee-il.

Padmé Amidala Naberrie

"I was not elected to watch my people suffer and die while you discuss this invasion in a committee!"
- Queen Amidala, to the Galactic Senate

Padmé Naberrie was elected queen of Naboo when she was 14 and took on the name Amidala. If her rather fabulous costumes didn't make you fall in love, her refusal to submit to some smarmy alien invaders should. When the Galactic Republic turned out to be useless she saved her planet herself and brought peace between humans of Naboo and the native Gungans. Some Jedi helped but whatever.

After two terms as queen (the people wanted to amend the constitution so she could stay but she said no), Padmé was asked to become a Senator. Padmé led the opposition again militarizing the Republic and war with the Separatists, which led to several assassination attempts. She fought along side Jedi against the droid army. Ultimately Padmé and a few others helped create what would turn into the Rebel Alliance when Emperor Palpatine took over the galaxy.


Strengths: Great gowns, beautiful gowns. Aggressive negotiations. Fiercely democratic af!

Weaknesses: Pouty Jedi who lost their mom.




General Leia Organa

"Governor Tarkin. I should have expected to find you holding Vader's leash.
I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board."

Like her mother Padmé and adoptive father Bail Organa, Leia was a senator in the Imperial Senate. Unhappy with the oppressive rule of Emperor Palpatine, Leia worked in secret with the rebels to undermine the Empire. She helped deliver blueprints of the Death Star to the Rebels, killed crime lord Jabba the Hutt, brought down the evil Empire, and establish the New Republic that her son helped destroy but we won't talk about that.


Strengths: Scathing insults. Mary Poppins like space flight. Leadership skills. Keeping a white dress relatively clean in a trash compactor, sis how?

Weaknesses: Scoundrels. Rian Johnson's writing.




Nakia

"I've seen too many in need just to turn a blind eye. I can't be happy here knowing that there's people out there who have nothing."

Nakia is a Wakandan spy who quite frankly is wiser than the Wakandan ruler T'Challa and, like, everyone else. She saved Shuri, Ramonda, and the last of the destroyed purple flowers to give T'Challa his Black Panther powers back idkw T'Challa still gets his ass kicked after drinking this stuff it must not be very good. Nakia believed that loyalty to what's right is more important than loyalty to a title, and was insistent that Wakanda should use it's resources to make the world a better place instead of hiding them.


Strengths: Having her sh*t together.

Weaknesses: T'challa. He ain't good enough for you sis, kick him to the curb.




Éowyn, Shieldmaiden of Rohan

"No living man am I! You look upon a woman!"
- Eowyn (book quote)

Niece to King Théoden, Éowyn was told to stay home while the men rode to Gondor to fight the forces of Mordor. Instead she disguised herself as a man and joined the army with hobbit Merry Brandybuck. During the Battle of the Pelennor Fields she defended her uncle against the Witch-King who was like "no man can kill me!" and Éowyn was like "challenge accepted!" and then she shoved her sword in his face! What's the Rohirian word for badass?

Strengths: All of them.

Weaknesses: Unwashed rangers (me too, girl!). Cooking.




Leeloo, the Fifth Element

"Humans act so strange. Everything you create is used to destroy."

Leeloominaï Lekatariba Lamina-Tchaï Ekbat De Sebat is a Supreme Being sent to Earth to defeat the Great Evil every 5,000 years. She is the Fifth Element, a great fighter, likes chicken, and she saved the galaxy.

Strengths: Enhanced strength, healing, learning,

Weaknesses: Takes 5,000 year long naps.




Brunnhilde the Valkyrie

"I don't plan to stop drinking. But... I don't wanna forget. I can't turn away anymore. So if I'm gonna die, well... it might as well be driving my sword through the heart of that murderous hag."

Brunnhilde is an Asgardian who was part of an elite group of warriors called the Valkyries. She and her sister warriors fought Hela, the Goddess of Death. She was the only survivor and out of shame and guilt exiled herself to Sakaar. She had some low moments, but when the time came she stepped up and helped Thor save the people of Asgard.

Strengths: Befriending the Hulk. Fighting. Looks fab in a cape.

Weaknesses: Alcohol.

Mass Effect definitely had a few issues with this (e.g. one issue: a male PC could not romance a man until Mass Effect 3) but this was one of the first few mainstream/popular games to even have it as an option, so... thanks Bioware.

For women: Liara, Samantha Traynor, Samara, and a couple other small, optional characters like Diana Allers and Kelly Chambers (which are....... lol).

Anyways, DA: Origins had two straight options and two bi options, with Dragon Age II making it so all the romance options are bisexual (sebastian doesn't count ok). Dragon Age: Inquisition went back to some exclusive romance options for male and female players.

Fallout 4 introduced a romance mechanic, but the previous game in the series (New Vegas) did originally have plans to implement one. New Vegas also had multiple openly lgbt companions and NPCs - Arcade, Veronica and Cass, however none are able to be romanced.

For women: Cait, Piper and Curie.
For men: Preston, MacCready, Hancock and Danse.
Elder Scrolls

I'm not gonna list them as there's a LOT but every romanceable companion in Skyrim is bi and you can also marry them. In Elder Scrolls: Online you can marry your fellow friends' PCs, no matter their gender. wow

musicnkisses is back with another webtoon post. This time it focuses on lesbian/wlw centric comics. Not everything on here is a webtoon, with some being manga or manhua (Chinese comics). I tried to filter out porny trash, but let me know if I didn’t. Tamen De Gushi/Their Story (Genre: Slice of Life, Comedy) ONGOING This is a manhua about a schoolgirl who falls in love with a girl from a different school. It’s slice of life format so it also focuses on the day to day activities on the girls and other characters. It’s cute and really funny. A ton of people recommended this in the last webtoon post so I thought I’d start this post out with it. Read It Here It Would Be Great If You Didn’t Exist (Genre: Drama, Comedy) COMPLETE Idk why this is called this? Both ladies are happy the other exists. This webtoon is about a woman who finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her with another woman… and proceeds to date that woman. It has more depth than what the plot describes and there’s no poly; the dude is dropped fairly quickly. The art is really pretty, I love how the eyes are drawn. Read It Here Always Human (Genre: Sci-fi, Fantasy) COMPLETE This can be found on Webtoon.com. Set in the near future where people can change their appearance via modifications they can get at the hospital. A modded up girl spots another girl without mods and finds her interesting. Their relationship begins from there. I didn’t finish reading this so idk what the plot brings later but the premise isn’t nearly as creepy as it sounds. Read It Here What Does The Fox Say? (Genre: Drama, Melodrama, Workplace) COMPLETE This is about a woman who joins a mobile gaming company and falls in love with her boss who has a lot of baggage when it comes to relationships. Other coworkers include men who can’t take no for an answer and the boss’s best friend/ex-girlfriend. Read It Here The Third Party (Genre: Comedy, Drama, Workplace, Melodrama) COMPLETE A young woman interns at a broadcast station where her “husband” works. She falls in love with a producer there and begins to question her political marriage to the country’s most popular news anchor. Read It Here Sweet Lovin’ Baby (Genre: Anthology) COMPLETE This manga is a brief anthology series about four different women who come to the conclusion that they are lesbians. I liked the artstyle, it was different for a manga. The creator of Sweet Lovin’ Baby has created other lesbian centric manga, Indigo Blue and Love My Life. Read It Here Find the Author’s Other Works Here My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness (Genre: Autobiography) COMPLETE This manga blew up on Pixiv in Japan, which is a site similar to Deviantart. Based on the author’s life, the manga deals with her battle with mental illness, eating disorders, and realizing she’s a lesbian. This manga is being published in the US right now so unlike the other comics on this list 'My Lesbian Experience' is availiable for purchase. Incidentally there’s a sequel that came out a couple of days ago, but you should probably buy that too. Read It Herenote: it’s best to read this on a phone. Fluttering Feelings (Genre: Comedy, Drama) COMPLETE A webtoon about two girls who are in the same major in college, and live in the same neighborhood. Will a relationship bloom between these girls? BOOKS

This week, we feature a recent Graveyard Shift Sisters interview with indigenous author Rebecca Roanhouse, whose new novel Trail of Lightning is released on June 26. You may recall that the novel was featured in the June 2018 speculative fiction books post. We also have casting news on the upcoming Lovecraft Country adaptation, and we're acknowledging the author Octavia E. Butler.

Trail of Lightning is a supernatural fantasy about a Native woman who hunts monsters, and is the first book in The Sixth World Series.

Roanhorse discusses her award-winning short story, Welcome To Your Authentic Indian Experience, which is available to read at Apex Magazine. On Welcome being translated into multiple languages and gaining recognition, she says, “My story speaks to the specificity of the Native experience, but it is an experience marginalized communities all share in various ways.”

Roanhorse talks about how important it was for the cover of Trail of Lightning to depict the Native American characters: “Writing this book and being very aware of how little representation Natives get in SFF (or any popular culture), I really pressed to have input on the cover. My agent agreed and we pushed for that in the contract.”

Her next book is Race To The Sun, which will be published by the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. Race to the Sun will be about “Navajo mythology starring a seventh grade Navajo girl, her little brother, and her best friend (who will be Native and Black) battling monsters to save the world.”

After his father goes missing, Black joins up with his friend Letitia “Leti” Dandridge (Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America to find him. This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the malevolent spirits that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback. The goal is an anthological horror series that reclaims genre storytelling from the African-American perspective.

Gags is directed by Adam Krause, and the film is premiering in a couple of days at Chicago's Cinepocalypse, the Midwest’s largest genre film festival. The article/iterview with Krause is quite long, and details the history of Gags the clown from its inception in 2015 through its viral marketing campaign, and all the work that goes into making an independent horror film.

Allkpop.com is reporting that Eunji is reviewing a horror script for the upcoming film, 0.0MHz, which is apparently based on the webtoon of the same name. According to the source, “members of a group who have various supernatural experiences such as seeing ghosts” and “they meet together at an abandoned house.”

Justin Simien, who created the hit Dear White People, will be making the upcoming horror film, Bad Hair. In the interview, he says: “[‘Bad Hair’] follows a girl from Compton who doesn’t have the right look. She doesn’t have the right hair, she doesn’t have the right face, she doesn’t have the right skin color. She wants to be a VJ in the late ’80s, early ’90s and she makes a bit of a Faustian bargain with this woman who takes over the network where she’s at and she ends up with this hair, this weave in her head, that may or may not have a mind of its own.”

For decades, the Chucky films have included characters who are LGBTQ. Mancini, who is gay, wrote, produced and/or directed the films in the franchise. With The Bride of Chucky, the author of the article writes that the film “bring[s] a certain queer sensibility to the franchise” including “one of the first positive portrayals of a young gay man I’d seen in a horror film.” The rest of the article breaks down the Chucky films and praises them for their inclusivity, even if imperfect.

Before Trisha Paytas was crying on her kitchen floor, Nelson Sullivan was documenting his life at 5 Ninth Avenue with a camcorder in the 1980s. These prototypical vlogs have gained a cult following for giving a rare glimpse into LGBT life in NYC during the Reagan era. They're especially significant for their early-days footage of now iconic entertainers including RuPaul, Lady Bunny, and the Club Kids.

RuPaul and the gang drive around the city on their way to a Kevin Larmee gallery show. Some kids pop in and throw around slurs and basically get ignored by everyone.
