ONTD Original: Underrated Comedic Performances

$

image host

Outside of movies that become financial and critical acclaim, most movies along with the performances do not receive the love they deserve. This list consists of some of my favorite comedic performances that most overlook or forget about. The list also consists of a few performances that were overlooked by performances in the same movie.

Lennie James (Sol), Gobbie Gee (Vinny) & Ade (Tyrone)

Snatch (2000)

Possibly the best Guy Ritchie film (come at me Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels fans) that involves I believe the best performances from the movie. The synopsis is:

"Set in the London criminal underworld, the film contains two intertwined plots: one dealing with the search for a stolen diamond, the other with a small-time boxing promoter who finds himself under the thumb of a ruthless gangster (Alan Ford) who is ready and willing to have his subordinates carry out severe and sadistic acts of violence."

With so many other more known actors like Brad Pitt, Jason Statham, Dennis Farina and Benicio del Toro taking majority of the attention. These three hold their own in every scene they are in.

Jada Pinkett (Peaches Jordan)

Low Down Dirty Shame (1994)

Many do not see her as comedic actress or even an actress now but in the 90s, Ms. Pinkett was everywhere in videos (“Keep Ya Head Up”), television (“A Different World”) and movies (“Jason’s Lyrics”, “Set it Off”, etc.). So, her performance in Low Down Dirty Shame as Keenan Ivory Wayans (Shame) friend/sidekick is ignored by most.

Vivica A. Fox (Lysterine) & Jamie Foxx (Bunz)

Booty Call (1997)

Honorable Mentions

Thomas Mikal Ford (Mink)

Class Act (1992)

DarlingssSs, the quarantine seems to be almost over, at least in some parts of the world unfortunatelly, so I decided that it is time to end this wee ONTD Original series with a bang. So today it is not just a tv rec, it is also a reminder to wear your masks and gloves when you go out because

Peep Show

Genre: Comedy

Lenght: 30 mins

Why Should I watch it?

Because of Super Hans! This show gave us Olivia Colman! This show gave us endless quotes!

You are probably asking yourself "why is this idiot with a dumb username telling me to watch a peep show?". Now, the show is called like that because it is supposed to be as if we were to peek in the lives of the main characters, it's like a sort of modern family type of show, but better. Two single men, who share a flat and countless disadventures, will entertain you like very few other shows can. You still don't believe me? Take a peep!

Where can I watch it?

  • All4

  • Youtube

  • Hulu (according to google)

  • Amazon Prime (according to google, I can't find it on mine)

  • Your usual places Ssnakey won't say

ONTD, I hope these posts managed to give you something nice to watch and pass a bit of time laughing despite the current situation. Remember to stay hydrated, get enough sleep and workout a little. You are strong, you are loved and you will get thru this pandemic!
..And if you do some soul searching, well maybe try not to do it Super Hans style

ONTD Indie Release Guide Graphic.png

As the weeks progress, it’s clear that studios are becoming more and more receptive to sending their new releases directly to digital release: this week’s post is entirely new releases, many of which are premiering in virtual cinemas. Some releases are streaming on popular services like Netflix and Hulu, some are rentals in cooperation with location theaters, and some are VOD - that is, available to rent or buy on digital services like Apple, Amazon and Google Play. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have already come to VOD: May 1st, April 24th, and April 17th.

ontd original: the best animal crossing villagers by species*

$
0
0

Take some time from hitting rocks to read this post!

*mostly

Some species aren't mentioned - Bulls, Ostriches, the sparrow-like birds, Kangaroos - Because there are no good ones. Sorry, I make the rules.

Drago the alligator is a little weird looking, I give you that. But he is based off of an Eastern Dragon.

Most frogs suck, but RIBBOT is a robot frog, and that's badass.

I'm just kidding I hate this fucker.

Coco is continually shocked at everything. Her expression doesn't change. She is based off of haniwa.

Maelle is apparently one of the villagers you could have found on the Island in the Gamecube game. She is by far the nicest duck. The rest look weird.

Mott just likes a nerd, but he's apparently a jock character. Probably says 'name every comic Deadpool was in' all day.

I was going to pick Tutu but Klaus is a damn GREECIAN DRESSED BEAR. HE IS GOING TO THE OLYMPICS!

Deli has a nice smile and matching colors!

Piper is...a dove? I don't know, but the aesthetic is great.

Love Agnes' frown. Same.

Shit I picked two bears...uh, this is Pekoe and I love her ears.

The koalas were hard. I was going to go with Canberra bc I love her giant eyes. But Yuka's color scheme is nice.

Dobie is clearly smart enough to know about the financial inequalites plaguing the younger villagers and doesn't bitch about bootstraps.

I was torn between like 3 squirrels (Hazel and Tasha and) but I'm biased bc Static is my favorite villager period.

Frown Queen Ankha. I consider her a matching set with Lucky the dog.

Becky with the good color scheme.

He is based off of Dogū, and looks like a friendly fellow.

Greta looks like your grandmother with plastic on all of the furniture who listens to music a grammophone.

Hopper is based off of a rockhopper penguin. Surf's Up!

It's a fucking unicorn. Julian is cool. He was either the first or second most Popular Villager in New Leaf, I believe, second only to Marshall the squirrel.

Marina the octopus. How does she live out of water. I wonder if her New Horizons chatter references Splatoon.

Goth Queen Muffy.

If Animal Crossing existed in the 60s, Naomi would be the mascot.

Olaf's catchphrase is 'Wiffa' and that's awesome.

I was going to pick Bones but A) Marcel is a mime dog, and B) Birthday Twins!

Bonus: Serena, the Spirit of the Fountain in City Folk. You paid money and threw your axe in.

There are a lot of characters with darker fur with pops of turquoise. I love it. This is Pashmina. She's the only goat outside of Shep who doesn't look horrendous.

I was going to pick Merengue but this is Rhonda and she is not here for your shit.

Yes another historical animal in Sterling the Eagle.

I was going to pick Opal the elephant but come on. Tia is a teapot elephant.

Zelle's funky face pattern and horns make him cool. His eyes, not so much.

Who is in your town?

ONTD Original: Top 10 Best crossovers seen on TV. (And 5 worst)

$
0
0
So, who doesn't love a Crossover? Different universes and characters meeting each other. It's great! So, let's take a look at the best crossovers seen on TV.

10. Power Rangers in Space / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Boom, directly on your 90´s kid nostalgia and Saban Entertainment's attempt to take your money. It was still fun to see both words collide.

9. Friends / Mad About You
Lisa Kudrow had a recurring job in Mad About You, so when she was cast on Friends, they decided to give Ursula a twin sister, and that's how the crossover happened. The Mad About You appeared on Central Perk one day.

8. Scandal / How To Get Away With Murder
Annalise teamed up with Olivia to work up a class action regarding the mass incarceration of black people in the United States, and take's Nate's dad case to the Supreme Court.

7. Jimmy Neutron / The Fairly Odd Parents
They've actually cross over many times but the first time we saw the Jimmy Timmy Power Hour was because Timmy wished that he could be sent to the best laboratory in any universe so Cosmo and Wanda send him to Jimmy Neutron's lab.

6. Family Guy / The Simpsons
Every college dude nearly had an orgasm when Family Guy cross over to The Simpsons. When Peter gets annoyed by an unfunny comic strip, he decides to draw his own. His art is a hit at first, but when he offends women with his strip and the Internet turns against him, he flees to Springfield.

5. The Flintstones / The Jetsons
Elroy buildt a Time Machine and that's how they went to the past and met the Simpsons, it's an importante milestone since the concept of crossover existed before, but no primetime network tv show had attempted it before this one in the 80s.

4. Doctor Who / Torchwood / The Sarah Jane Adventures
To close his fourth regular season and the last one on his show, David Tennant and Russell T. Davies plotted a Crossover that featured the return of all the New Who companions and a crossover with it's spin-off shows.

3. Archer / Bob's Burgers
Several connections exist between Archer and Bob's Burgers, the most obvious of which being the Archer Season 4 premiere. In it, the restaurant itself is featured along with the primary members of the Belcher family as more realistically stylized "Archer versions" with an amnesic Sterling Archer as Bob Belcher. Both Archer and Bob are voiced by H. Jon Benjamin.

Bonus: The Archer/Kingsman crossover. Too bad they couldn't get Taron Egerton.

2. Supernatural / Scooby Doo
Ok, listen to me first. They both hunt monsters, they both have monster of the week thing, they're both super campy and hilarious as fuck. And ScoobyNatural ended up being a super entertaining hour, and one of the best episodes of Supernatural.

1. Arrow / Supergirl / The Flash / DC's Legends of Tomorrow / Batwoman / Black Lightning / Smallville / Batman The Animated Series / Birds of Prey / Lucifer / Batman (1966) / Titans / The Flash (1990) / Superman Returns / Stargirl / Doom Patrol / Swamp Thing / Green Lantern / Justice League (film)
After many years The CW managed to pull it's biggest crossover connecting almost every single DC show and movie in existence, and killing his lead character in the way. Even managing to include the Cinematic DCU and have known fan-beater Ezra Miller, which is a major thing for the 5th broadcast network.

------

Two and a Half Men / Dharma & Greg.
The first episode of TAAHM without Charlie Sheen had a lot of guest stars, one of them were Dharma & Greg, but it sucked since both of them were pretty loving to each other during the original series, so seeing them fight didn't really seemed like the characters from the original show.

Bones / Sleepy Hollow
Forced as hell. Both couples met for a special Halloween crossover episode that people hated.

Cops / The X-Files
I mean....just read the title.

The Avengers / Phineas and Ferb
While The Avengers may not be the most serious and grown up show, Phineas and Ferb just didn't work out with them, even if some puns we're appreciated.

Sabrina, The Teenage Witch / Boys Meets World / Teen Angel / You Wish
To promote it's new TGIF shows, ABC had Salem and Sabrina crossover to all the shows of the night as Salem time traveled to other eras. It seemed a bit forced and 'You Wish' and 'Teen Angel' got cancelled pretty quickly.

ONTD, what's your favorite TV Crossover?

ONTD Original: What the Fuck is a Quibi

$
0
0
quibi-1.png

Quibi feels like, and in a way is, a parody of a content provider. In a parallel universe, Quibi isn’t an actual thing you can spend money on, it’s the show-within-a-show of a TV sitcom. The idea of ‘quick bites’ (or as their marketing insists on saying, ‘quibis’) for young people on the go, who are always on their darn phones, feels like a caricature of what an out-of-touch CEO would say. Yet here we are, living in a world where executives don’t realize that for millenials with busy schedules there is already a solution to longer content - the pause button.

How did we get to this point, where even in the midst of a global pandemic giving a lot of people tons of downtime, when streaming is more popular than ever, that Quibi can barely stay in the public consciousness? Join me for a story of Petty Assholes™ and failed gubernatorial elections, for $1.8 billion-dollar investments and no foresight, and for content so basic it hurts.

We must document Quibi because, a generation from now, no one will believe something this stupid ever existed.

DEVELOPMENT

Quibi, or as it was originally named, NewTV (cool), is the brain child of Jeffrey Katzenberg. Katzenberg envisioned original programming, meant to be shorter than 10 minutes, that would be available on a mobile-only streaming service. Even as early as 2018, Katzenberg was cocky about the project, “We don’t consider this competitive with Hulu, or HBO, or Netflix, or the networks,” he said, “it’s a completely different use case.” [1]

katzenberg-1.jpg

Let’s pause for a moment - who is Jeffrey Katzenberg? Jeffrey Katzenberg, noted petty asshole [2], was once the studio chairman at Disney, overseeing the much-lauded Disney renaissance of the mid 80s to mid 90s before being ousted in a coup/leaving in a huff to co-found Dreamworks animation. Katzenberg has been described as “Machiavellian” with an “ego and almost pathological need to be important.” [3]

whitlam-1.jpg

Katzenberg tapped Meg Whitman for the CEO position not too long after founding the company, and she is a whole other can of worms. Whitman gained notoriety as the CEO of Ebay over the course of a decade, which saw the company make such baffling decisions as acquiring Skype, a move which eventually lost over $1 billion dollars [4]. She then went on to fuck up Hewlett Packard, I guess having figured Carly Fiorina hadn’t done a thorough enough job. Like Fiorina, Whitman also ran a vanity campaign, running as a Reublican for Governor in California in 2010. This is especially hilarious, considering she had not voted in 28 years. [5]

Katzenberg and Whitman were able to shore up $1.8 Billion USD in funding from major studios for Quibi [6], a figure which is truly baffling. One has to wonder if the money is pledged by executives who live in the 30 Rock universe and were once thrilled by Devon Banks’s pioneering of 10-second TV.

PRE-LAUNCH

Quibi poured between $400 - $500 Million USD in to marketing [7], including an expensive superbowl spot. In doing my research, people told me these ads were ubiquitous. I have adblock and no cable so IDK ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A big part of the marketing push is in trying to make “quibi” not just a brand, but a descriptive unit of time. Because we all know what people love is when trends are pushed on them, and corporate sounding buzzwords are forced into situations where they don’t belong. See also: “Bing it!”

But that isn’t to say there was no hype at all. For a while, it seemed like every day some new A-Lister was inking a deal to produce content for Quibi, and the Reno 911! Reboot drew some interest - although cynically, one commenter noted “hopefully once whatever Quibi is fails they get picked up by Netflix or Hulu.” [8]

Quibi saw a fan-made podcast, produced by seemingly the only two stans the platform will ever have, called ‘Quibiverse’ pop up, which covered news on recent announcements of new shows and content. In March just weeks before launch, Quibi went ahead and sent a cease-and-desist to the duo imploring them to remove “Quibi” from their title and not to use any artwork deemed too similar to their branding. “It just felt so surreal to get a cease-and-desist from a billion-dollar company, about our fan podcast, in the midst of a global health crisis” [9]. The podcasters quickly rebounded, renaming their show ‘Streamiverse’ and declaring it “a podcast rooted entirely in spite” [10] where they regularly dunk on Quibi content.

CONTENT

Quibi is going for short-form content, but most of the shows offered are just longer stories with the commerical breaks built in. They are banking on their core demographic being 25-35 year olds [11], a move which confuses me as someone smack in the middle of that age range. My eyes are too tired for small screens and my attention span is too long for Tik Tok. The question that comes up over and over again is who is this for?

At least, I figured, it was free. You can imagine my surprise when I signed up in preparation for this ONTD original and it asked for TEN OF MY HARD EARNED CANADIAN DOLLARS. Yes, there is a free trial and yes, I will be cancelling before I’m charged. Where I live, Quibi is the same price at Netflix and Crave, and more expensive than Prime, Disney+, Apple TV, and oodles more expensive than CBC Gem which is free (thank you and please continue to pay your taxes so I get Schitt’s Creek content thanks y’all).

The limitations of Quibi’s platform are readily apparent. Their gimmick of being able to hold your phone vertically or horizontally to stream shows loses its appeal after trying it once or twice (and even then, the main menu to browse shows only works vertically). There are other tacky attempts at novelty, like the upcoming Spielberg’s After Dark which will only allow users to stream content after the sun goes down [12]. Can you imagine going to university four or five years, earning a degree in computer science, only to graduate and be asked to program a clock that lets users watch a lackluster 8 minute show? What a bummer.

Katzenberg, who is notoriously anti-piracy [13], has extended this as far as anti-sharing - it is not possible to screen record or even screencap their content. The most viral moment any of their shows has had was recorded on another phone and posted to Twitter. That being said, it doesn’t even seem like anyone is trying to pirate their content - take from that what you will.

Want to watch a show on your laptop instead of phone? Too bad. Want to Chomecast to your TV? Too bad. Quibi is built solely for tablets and mobile devices, an unbelievably stupid oversight that still hasn’t been fixed five weeks after launch.

FALL OFF

Quibi has quickly and quietly plummeted from the top-downloaded apps lists, currently sitting at number 125 on the iTunes chart and their daily active users is about 1.3 million, about a third of their total downloads [14]. If you consider their marketing budget, it means each of those people probably cost them hundreds of dollars to acquire. Time will tell how many will drop off after their free trial ends, but Google trends indicates things are not looking good.

image.png

Users aren’t the only ones unsure about Quibi. Over the past few months executives have been dropping like flies [15], and the company is facing legal trouble as a company called Eko sues them over screen rotation technology [16]. And while no legal actions are currently being taken, the makers of Everything is Terrible! sure have noticed some similarities.

Recently, Katzenberg granted an interview with the New York times in which he proclaims all of Quibi’s shortcomings are due to the current situation with COVID 19. “I attribute everything that has gone wrong to coronavirus,” he says, “it’s not close to what we wanted.” [17]

Public ridicule of Quibi has been swift and delightful, with users noting not only how disappointing the platform is, but its enormous cost as well.

I ACTUALLY WATCHED THIS FOR YOU

I figured it was only fair to give this content a try. This is time in my life I will never get back, when I am lying on my death-bed one day I am sure I will have regrets about what else I could have done with these precious moments (sorry, precious quibis) instead of watching these dumb shows.

imageb278b273c1724265.png
50 States of Fright

From Sam Raimi comes this anthology show so blissfully tone deaf that it circles right back around to hilarious. It is unbelievably bad horror - I’ve seen some Raimi defender’s claim it is supposed to be camp/B horror, but all the marketing plays it straight. The first story did remind me of Graph vs Host from Arrested Development, though, so that was fun.

Chrissy’s Court

The nicest thing I can say is that her mom is the bailiff and that’s cute I guess. Other than that it’s just like Teigen’s twitter feed came to life - you can decide for yourself how much that appeals to you.

Dummy

This project, based on the relationship between Cody Heller and Dan Harmon, starts out strong with the charming joke that Anna Kendrick is too ugly (????) to be sexually harassed, and just keeps going downhill from there. This felt like it was meant to be a movie, Quibi acquired it, so now it is a show I guess.

Most Dangerous Game

You know what, I did not hate it. It was dumb and predictable, but it was enjoyable enough to throw in the background while I formatted the sources of this post. Liam Hemsworth stars as Dodge Tynes (do you get it?? because he is dodging death???), a terminally ill man who doesn't want to leave his wife "penniless" when they clearly live a middle-class life and, like, own a home which is a lot more than most people.

Murder House Flip

Here is my guess - Jeffrey Katzenberg has a 14 year old granddaughter or niece or something who loves My Favourite Murder, and a wife who loves HGTV, and figured he was on to something. The premise is actually kinda interesting, but the show itself is surface level on both the murder and home reno content which makes it pretty dull.

Reno 911!

I’ve never watched the original (sorry), but this was probably the best thing I watched on Quibi. The shorter format actually works pretty well for this kind of sketch/improv and I did chortle.

ONTD Original: Horror & Post-MeToo Hollywood

$

Director Jovanka Vuckovic recently took to Twitter to express concern over allegations of child molestation against genre producer, Adam Donaghey, being ignored - if not outright buried - by the genre and indie film communities:

Most troubling are not just the allegations against Donaghey himself, but other worms found beneath the rock lifted as expressed by other community insiders following the social media exposure of said incident.

Nearly three years after the #MeToo dam burst, the entertainment industry is still broken. But are we ever going to reach culpability - or just more lip service?

This year, a sixteen-year-old girl alleged on Facebook that thirty-nine-year-old Adam Donaghey molested her on the set of the 2017 film A Ghost Story (you might remember it for its other infamous player, Casey Affleck). The film was directed by David Lowery, who denied any knowledge of Donaghey's behavior.

Donaghey was taken into custody on April 27th; he was immediately released after posting a $25,000 bond the following day.

Donaghey worked closely with genre notables Fangoria and Cinestate. (Reps for both also denied any knowledge of his behavior.)

His recent credits as producer are expansive, including Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich (2018), Porno (2019), Satanic Panic (2019), VFW (2019), and Castle Freak (2020), as well as many others in post-production.

Despite the public denials from just about everyone who had worked closely with Donaghey, Vuckovic made it clear that this behavior - and, in turn, those complicit by covering it up - is nothing new in the horror community:

Vuckovic's singling out of those choosing to work with predators could mean anyone from convincted child molestor Victor Salva, who directed outspoken #MeToo activist, Rose McGowan, in 2011's Rosewood Lane (and whose upcoming Jeepers Creepers 4 will be produced by Myriad Pictures), to director-producer Eric England, behind 2013's Contracted and 2019's Greenlight (he's been since removed from the IMDB page of the latter), who is now facing sexual assault allegations of his own - or perhaps, even, a certain son of a famous director. (Judging by discussion on Twitter, the possibilities are endless.)

Other women in the horror community joined the conversation.

Producer/Director, Micheline Pitt:

Directors, Jen and Sylvia Soska:

Actor, Barbara Crampton:

Screenwriter, April Wolfe:

In Vuckovic's thread, a genre journalist added further context to the original Dallas report:

It's now days since the initial report. So why is a single horror site out of many, Dread Central (who chose not to embed Vuckovic and Pitt's tweets hinting at more widespread behavior in the community, yet embedded others denying knowledge of Donaghey's behavior) - the only to report?

(Then again - considering said site's history when it comes to discussing victims of assault, perhaps that question has already been answered.)

What about Fangoria, the company that worked extensively with Donaghey? Or Birth Movies Death, who faced their own controversy regarding an inability to handle those accused of sexual harassment? Or Blumhouse? Or Bloody Disgusting? Or the Los Angeles Times? The mainstream outlets singled out by Vuckovic in her post - Variety, Hollywood Reporter, and Deadline - have also stayed silent.

A widely-shared Medium article, which lumps Donaghey's behavior alongside that of Joe Bob Briggs (his current controversy is an article he wrote last summer, just unearthed on Twitter), is currently the only other piece written on this topic. And certainly, the concerns raised about Briggs and the hypocrisy highlighted within also deserve ample discussion.

But why have so many self-appointed voices of the horror community been silent on the issue of Donaghey and other predators? Why is every new case given no more than a week's worth of outrage on social media before it's forgotten entirely?

And at what point must we decide that the community's take on feminism could stand to grow past the 1970s ceiling of Final Girl movies - all still largely written (and directed, and produced) by men?

ONTD Original: 5 Underrated actors & actresses who deserve more limelight

Hello ONTD! Are you tired of seeing the same faces over and over in your fave shows or upcoming movies? Have you had enough of Timothee Wotsit being fancast in every damn thing? Me too. I've made a list of actors and actresses who I think are underrated and deserve more love:

1. Costa Ronin

costa-ronin5d014aa5b938ad2f.jpg

This tall slice of Russian goodness nabbed his first major role on the equally underrated series The Americans, where he played Oleg Burov, a KGB officer. He also starred in the last two seasons of Homeland as Yevgeny Gromov, again playing a Russian spy. Ronin is particularly skilled at leaning into his natural charm on-screen and knowing how to underplay it when he needs to be subtle, or overplay it when he needs to be smarmy. Unfortunately, despite his perfect English (he learned the language after moving from the Soviet Union to New Zealand and then Australia), his strong Russian accent means that Hollywood will probably continue casting him as a Russian agent or East Berlin Prison Guard #2. Here's hoping that that he'll score another excellent series like the Americans, or at least score some good roles in foreign film.

2. Annet Mahendru

annet-mahendru.jpg

Another Americans alum, Mahendru actually spent a large chunk of her screen time opposite her co-star Ronin, and she gained much acclaim for her role as the troubled double agent Nina Krilova. The biracial actress also has an interesting background: she was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, to a Russian mother and Indian father. She is fluent in 3 languages (German, Russian and English) and can also speak Hindi, French and Persian. Since The Americans ended, she has nabbed a few film roles, guest-starred in the 2016 X-Files along with a few other TV series and is set to play a lead role in yet another Walking Dead spin-off, The Walking Dead: World Beyond. This makes OP mad because Mahendru is way too good to be starring in that trash, but get money I guess. Let's hope we'll see her some bigger projects in the near future!

3. Sophie Cookson

Nwe4-jDqqLc6Vujv7prIJpQkr0iz1b_jboNNTGCSHTauPbUbCOfS3ChxlMZx6MH5afXbBtbZNdkTfty_WE_kcukxjEQzRd5YBCjZ9cgPq84LvSr8QOuVnHwclRUUhyWHWWOjeX92MkgPAKTvL6JMIn8HmSRFiPCu8bStSFsedt3Q1rsXYkZGRj3MFVk3l_h60g1L.jpg

Cookson bears a striking physical resemblance to Alyssa Milano, but thankfully, that's where the comparison begins and ends. After a few side roles in films such as Kingsman and The Huntsman, she went on to play the lead in Red Joan as a British asset for the Soviet Union, who supplies the Russians with nuclear secrets in an effort to maintain peace in post-WWII. Recently, she also played in the lead in the BBC series The Trial of Christian Keeler (based on a true story), and has also starred in the Steve Coogan-led film Greed. Her next role is in the sci-fi film Infinite, and she will be starring alongside the likes of Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rupert Friend.

4. Hong Chau

hong-chau-1516986295-1570034058581.jpg

It's possible that Chau's most prominent role to date was on HBO's Watchmen, where she played the antagonist Lady Trieu. Before that, she had appeared in movies such as Inherent Vice and Downsizing, as well as nabbing a voice role on Bojack Horseman and appearing on Big Little Lies. Chau comes from humble roots: her parents fled from Vietnam in the late 1970s and lived in a refugee camp in Thailand, where their daughter was born. She grew up speaking Vietnamese as her first language, and learned English at school. Her next role will be in Artemis Fowl, where she will play a fairy. Let's hope we'll see her in some more excellent stuff very soon.

5. Ashton Sanders

ashton-sanders.jpg

Sanders can currently be seen in Netflix's new movie All Day and a Night, where he plays an inmate named Jakhor who ends up landing in the same prison as his father. Sanders' breakout role was in the award-winning and groundbreaking Moonlight in 2016, where he played the teenaged version of the main character, Chiron. Since then, he has starred in movies such as HBO's film Native Son and sci-fi movie Captive State. For his role in All Day and a Night, Sanders has received rave reviews, with some critics already calling it one of the best performances of 2020. Fans are (rightfully so) clamouring for Sanders to continue nabbing bigger and better projects - let's hope that we'll get our wish sooner later than never!

ONTD Original: 25 Great Debut Singles by Female Artists

$
0
0

Yesterday, Rolling Stone shared their list of the greatest debut singles of all time. And while Britney Spears'"…Baby One More Time" (1998) claimed the top spot, in true Rolling Stone fashion female artists only accounted for one-fourth of the list's 100 entries (this fraction becomes only slightly larger if one includes singles by co-ed acts Blondie, The B-52s and Chic).

This disparity may be partially attributed to the list's parameters: solo debuts by already well-known artists (e.g. Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Nicks) were not counted. But for the most part, it's just another example of the industry and its critics' underrating of the women behind some of its most compelling contributions. (It may also be worth noting that of the 15 writers listed in the article's byline, only four are women.)

With this in mind, I took the liberty of listing 25 of the greatest debut singles by female artists and/or female-fronted bands that Rolling Stone overlooked (in order of release, sticking to the aforementioned criterion).

Cyndi Lauper - "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"" (1983)

Kylie Minogue - "Locomotion" (1987)

Mariah Carey - "Vision of Love" (1990)

Tori Amos - "Me and a Gun" (1991)

Brandy - "I Wanna Be Down" (1994)

Garbage - "Vow" (1995)

Shakira - "Estoy Aquí" (1995)

Spice Girls - "Wannabe" (1996)

Dido - "Here with Me" (1999)

Jennifer Lopez - "If You Had My Love" (1999)

Mandy Moore - "Candy" (1999)

Nelly Furtado - "I'm Like a Bird" (2000)

P!nk - "There You Go" (2000)

Girls Aloud - "Sound of the Underground" (2002)

Amy Winehouse - "Stronger Than Me" (2003)

Ciara - "Goodies" (feat. Petey Pablo, 2004)

JoJo - "Leave (Get Out)" (2004)

Lily Allen - "Smile" (2006)

Lykke Li - "Little Bit" (2007)

Lady Gaga - "Just Dance" (feat. Colby O'Donis, 2008)

The Pretty Reckless - "Make Me Wanna Die" (2010)

Azealia Banks - "212" (feat. Lazy Jay, 2011)

Charli XCX - "Stay Away" (2011)

In response, I shared what I believe to be 25 of the best debut singles by female artists that weren't recognized by Rolling Stone. In keeping with the parameters of the original list, I didn't include solo debuts by artists that were already well-known as members of an ensemble—think "Crazy in Love" or "London Bridge"—but there were still a ton of great, eligible debuts that didn't make the cut. So without further ado, I bring you Part 2.

ONTD Original: Rebirth of the Modern American Rock & Roll Band

Hello everyone! No one cares, but I used to be active on here back when I was in college because I had zero social skills. However, thanks to the robust commentary from the users of yesteryear, I was able to generate witty, divisive, scathing yet loving banter with complete strangers which gave me enough courage to become involved in the music scene in the town my college was located in. I have since left, gone to grad school, lost two major job opportunities leading up to COVID and because of COVID, both of which had to do with event planning (...Live Nation...).

SO...I have taken it upon myself to do something completely selfish and entirely selfless: Share some of the best music that no one is listening to because the music industry is rigged. I care enough to dig up the stank old email I used to register this account because if anyone has the capacity to care about these issues, it is most definitely ONTD!

The Vespertines

The band just isn't all white, if you catch my drift.

Their sound has gotten progressively louder and louder through the years because Vanessa Acosta, the vocalist, is clearly trying to have a breakthrough; based off the evolution of their sound, it's obvious that they've had their run-in with labels, to no avail, however. This band stands toe-to-toe with the mishmashed whisper/glare of Billie Eilish and fellow acolytes without flinching as they turn to rock & freakin roll in the other direction.

From the 2011 release One Last Time Around the Equator

A live performance from their 2014 sophomore album Areté

The name says Björk but, sonically, they are Hendrix, Joplin, Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones (yes!), Brody Dalle, Queens of the Stone Age, Sublime, Erykah Badu, all without blatantly ripping anyone off. Catch this vibe!

There are so many more artists from the scene I grew up on but many of them are no longer together. Let me know, in the comments, if there is a non-conventional artist you believe is long overdue for some recognition--the scene is brutal and if you or I don't care, then no one will. I love this music so much I want to see if this post leads to a vinyl release because OLTATE is legendary. I'm sorry if this feels like a reject Pitchfork review. Pitchfork would never though...

Last year, Lil Nas X appeared on the scene and changed country music. Yes, there have been black country stars before, but people need to be reminded that no genre of American music belongs to one race, especially so with rock because I know everyone knows where rock comes from.

There may be a lot of talk about when theaters will be reopening, but even if the current mid-summer predictions are accurate, that leaves us with a couple more months of home releases, at a minimum. This weekend brings one of the first big theatrical releases that was moved directly to streaming rather than VOD - Paramount’s The Lovebirds - and several indie releases, listed below. As usual, let me know if there’s anything I’ve missed!

The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia/Sony and Disney. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have already come to VOD: May 15th, May 8th, and May 1st.
