Original
These Were Guitar-Tinged Midtempo 2000s R&B Ballads

This theme is a mouthful, but nevertheless a full mood and sound at one point in time, when there would be drama about someone stealing our Myspace song. We have to credit r&b icon Ne-Yo for encompassing this sound and penning a whole bunch of hits during this era, including several from these 10 items. This is sort of a spin off to another previous post, but I'm having another nostalgia night. Do you remember these songs?

Hate That I Love You - Rihanna ft. Ne-Yo

I feel like Riri hasnt performed this in a while and forgets about this song as well as "We Ride", which she confessed she was not fond of. I guess I just stan old school Rihanna more than she does.

Irreplaceable - Beyonce

Ne-Yo wrote this song about one his aunt's messy bf's, however one day Beyonce said at a concert that she wrote the song (which in fact she did co-write said by Ne-Yo himself), and ensued the whole klepto rep Bey would get in songwriting credit.

With You - ***** *****

I would like to mention the song for nostalgia's sake and because it was everywhere at the time + it's definitive of the theme, but would not want to link so directly from the singer. So here I've place a random cover made by a couple of Youtube musicians.

T-Shirt - Shontelle

Shontelle has a few hits to her name and they're constantly being used for talent show auditions. This is the anthem about obsessing bout the boyfriend fit.

How to Deal - Frankie J

If you're wondering where he's up to now, Frankie J dropped a lowkey fire joint album with Baby Bash last year, including a song with a feature from the next artist on this list.

Doin Too Much - Paula Deanda

From Myspace queen to The Voice auditioner, we admire her hustle and will always appreciate 2007 relic Paula Deanda's hits including "Walk Away" and "When It Was Me".

Too Little Too Late - Jojo

Maybe some of you haven't kept up with Jojo in recent times - who got out of label hell after almost a decade - when she has newer bops like "When Love Hurts". She's one of the youngest og's in the game still performing her line hits today including "Leave", "Baby It's You", and "Too Little Too Late".

Tattoo - Jordin Sparks

I assumed this was another Ne-Yo song, but it got criticism at the time for sounding too similar to Bey's "Irreplaceable".

Sometimes - Ariana Grande

Okay let's not forget one of Ari's best songs "Sometimes" which is relevant to this midtempo 2000s guitar r&b sound, which was released in 2016. It should have been a single to close off the Dangerous Woman era and would've been a radio staple, but whose to say.

Go On Girl - Ne-Yo

We have to end the list with the one and only!

Recently Twitter has been calling out white Instagram models for playing up the "racially ambigious" role. They darken their skin, overline their lips and change their hair to look like women of color. Here are some offenders:

mikafrancis

eemmahaldberg

jaidengumby

We can also see this phenomenon in the Entertainment industry with Ariana Grande, The Kardashians and Jesy Nelson from Little Mix, being the most notable cases. One can't help but wonder how much money these women spend on spray tan and if they stain all of their clothes and sheets.

Jesy Nelson from Little Mix
Miss Balegdah herself, Jesy Nelson is 100% white despite her convincing jamaican accent and stunning island glow. She's often seen sporting heavily overlined lips, long party city wigs, and drenched in tanning oil. PB&Nelsons glow is so convincing that people often think she's the second WOC in the band instead of actual WOC Jade Thirlwall.

https://instagram.com/p/BfZSYHqh7_i

Her natural skin color:

Ariana Grande
Pete Davidson’s never-wife Ariana Grande is an actress, singer, and shockingly, not latina. Despite the heavy tan, recently plumped lips, and rolodex of AAVE influenced twitter comments to keep her hip to the youth, Ariana is 100% mayo. While many argue that "deep tanning" is merely a Cultural Institution amongst italians, op can only say: "thank u, next (bullshit excuse)."

Kylie Jenner
The crown heiress of white women pretending to be black for attention, Kylie Jenner’s transformation from calabasas cornbread to Oakland baddie was likely inevitable given her equally obsessed family.

ONTD Original: Inside Lindsay Lohan's Very Complicated Political History

$
0
0

Lindsay Lohan is facing pushback on social media, after it was revealed she liked tweets from Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, urging US voters to "vote red" this past week. On further inspection, the actress has also liked tweets ranging from Barack Obama, Ivanka Trump, Dalai Lama, and even... Vladimir Putin.

Lohan's politics have always sent mixed messages, causing doubt whether she leans more right or left. She has a history of supporting politicians from every side of the political spectrum, speaking out against Brexit, visiting Erdogan, and at one point, offering to campaign for Obama.

Inside, we take a lot at her very inconsistent history with politics. Buckle up.

Lindsay Lohan's political outlook has fluctuated wildly just as with everything else in her life.

2006

MTV-EMA-le-retour-de-la-Mean-Girl-Lindsay-Lohan-face-a-Janet-Jackson-et-Camila-Cabello.jpg

The earliest comments she made regarding politics came in 2006, during George W. Bush's presidency and the Iraq war, when she told Elle magazine she hoped to visit troops in Iraq with then-Senator Hillary Clinton. "I've been trying to go to Iraq with Hillary Clinton for so long. Hillary was trying to work it out, but it seemed too dangerous."

2008

WZTU6AAMWARYMDTUYJOEPDAI6E.jpg

Lohan was a big champion for Barack Obama during his first run for President, even offering her services to campaign for him in 2008. She was turned down, causing Obama's opponent John McCain to use her as a way to attack the then-nominee, telling ABC; "So let me get this straight—they turned away Lindsay Lohan, but Barack Obama has friends like unrepentant terrorist Bill Ayers and convicted felon Tony Rezko? Maybe LiLo is just too upstanding for Barack Obama."

Late 2008

Despite being turned down by Obama, Lohan remained committed to the Democratic party, and even called out then-VP candidate Sarah Palin in a post on her MySpace blog, labeling her a 'narrow-minded homophobe'.

"I find it quite interesting that a woman who now is running to be second in command of the United States, only 4 years ago had aspirations to be a television anchor. Which is probably all she is qualified to be... And that she is not fond of environmental protection considering she's FOR drilling for oil in some of our protected land... Well hey, if she wants to drill for oil, she should DO IT IN HER OWN backyard. This really shows me her complete lack of real preparation to become the second most powerful person in this country.

"Is our country so divided that the Republicans' best hope is a narrow minded, media obsessed homophobe?" she wrote at the time.

2012

After a slew of legal issues, Lohan tweeted at Obama in 2012 to consider cutting taxes, "for those that are listed on Forbes as 'millionaires' if they are not, you must consider that as well.”

And despite initially voicing her support for Obama, Lohan came out in favor of Mitt Romney. "I just think employment is really important right now," she said at the time. "So, as of now, Mitt Romney. As of now."

She caused further confusion, by tweeting pro-Obama messages just weeks after announcing her support of Romney. She tweeted "RT if you're #ProudOfObama as our commander in chief."

2016

WZTU6AAMWARYMDTUYJOEPDAI6E.jpg

During the 2016 election, Lindsay Lohan voiced her endorsement of Hillary Clinton, posting a picture of her with Clinton and a caption reading, "Couldn't understand you more."

Later that year, she went on a notorious rant speaking out against Brexit, urging voters to "be smart" and "remain".

2017

Lohan's politics took an odd turn in 2017.

In January, she met with Turkish dictator Erdogan, to discuss the Syrian refugee crisis. "What a dream it is for Mr. President Erdogan and The First Lady to invite me to their home. Their efforts in helping Syrian Refugees is truly inspiring.", she wrote on Instagram. Many speculated she was being paid by the Turkish government to promote Erdogan's regime to mainstream media.

She also called told media she "respects" and "admires" Vladimir Putin's persistence in an interview with Russia's most popular television show, Pust govoryat (Let Them Talk).

July 2017

In July 2017, Lohan took to twitter to encourage social media to "stop bullying" Donald Trump, stating his wife, Melania, and daughter Ivanka, are "very good people."

2018

In 2018, Lohan clarified she had "no feeling, no emotion" over Trump being President, but said his daughter Tiffany is a "very sweet girl".

She did however, troll Trump on twitter, telling him that he should look for an attorney using the website she now represents, Lawyer.com. "Hey, @realDonaldTrump heard you need a lawyer," she tweeted, "at Lawyer.com we are always here for everyone ;)"

November 2018

Now here we are, in late 2018. Lindsay Lohan's last political opinion came by way of her liking 2 tweets by Donald and his wife, urging voters to "vote red" in the midterms. If a twitter like is an endorsement, take that as you will. But as Lohan has shown throughout her history, her political opinions fluctuate as wildly as her fame has.

What do you think, ONTD? Does Lindsay Lohan have any political opinions of her own, or does she switch depending on what will get her the most attention?

Juliet, Naked
I honestly loved this movie, it had heart, it was funny, Chris O’Dowd really captured the essence of obsessive fandom, and Ethan Hawke and Rose Byrne had great chemistry. It is a movie based on the book of the same name by Nick Hornby (who wrote About A Boy) . It is about a Annie (Rose Byrne) who's trapped in a relationship with Duncan (Chris O’Dowd) who’s obsessed with a once famous singer, Tucker (Ethan Hawke). Duncan runs a website dedicated to Tucker where he discusses his life's work with other middle aged men. One day, Duncan receives a cd with old demos by Tucker but Annie listens to it first which angers Duncan and he throws a fit. Annie then leaves a negative review of the album on Duncan's website which attracts Tucker's attention and he contacts her and that leds to a life-changing encounter. I wish it ended like the book but I didn’t mind the movie ending either. I highly recommend watching this movie. It also awakened a crush on Ethan Hawke that I didn’t know was possible, but….lol

Note: I must say thank you to the user that suggested this movie and book to me (I would’ve gone back and replied to the comment where they suggested it but I accidentally deleted everything in my inbox so I must say thank you publicly, I hope you read this and say hi in the comments, I’d love to discuss with you). And I also wanna thank all the users that gave me book recommendations, I wrote them all down and will be reading them <3.

13 Going on 30

I thought this was a really cute movie, starring Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo, in which Jennifer portrays a girl who wishes to be an adult because she can't find a boyfriend and her wish comes true so she has to adjust to her new life.

Silver Linings Playbook

This wasn't a typical romcom since it dealt with mental health and serious issues, but Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence (the on-screen power couple) made this one of my favorite romantic movies of all time. Their chemistry was so great, and the script was clever, funny and sincere which made this a great watch.

Enchanted

Amy Adams is an actual princess so it's no wonder why she was so perfect in the role of Giselle, a princess who was forced out of her animated universe into the real world.

Confessions of a Shopaholic

Starring Amy Adams' long lost twin, Isla Fisher as a lovable shopaholic drowning in debt, that starts working as an advice columnist for a financial magazine run by a very hot boss which leads to an overnight success that threathens to expose her secrets.
Rotten tomatoes has given very poor rating to all of these movies lmao so don't expect something groundbreaking, but it's fun and relaxing to watch.

The Big Sick

This movie was written by Kumail Nanjiani and his wife and it's about the first year of their relationship. It's witty and different and I highly recommend it. Also it stars Ray Romano who is fucking hilarious.

Kate & Leopold

This is the first movie I watched with Hugh Jackman as the main star and it made me fall in love with him. He stars opposite Meg Ryan, one of the romcom queens. Hugh plays a Duke of Albany (lol), a charming bachelor from 1800s, and Meg plays a modern day executive. Leopold (Hugh Jackman) somehow ends up in a modern world and falls for Kate (Meg Ryan) etc, you know how it goes...

Crazy Rich Asians

Rachel is a professor of game theory who's invited by her boyfriend Nick, to attend his best friend's wedding in Singapore. There she learns Nick is really wealthy and his family has certain expectations when it comes to Nick's girlfriend that Rachel doesn't meet.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

It's about a Greek woman, trying to get her giant family to accept her non-Greek boyfriend played by John Corbett (<3). It's chaotic but funny and full of heart.

Kissing Jessica Stein

Jessica (the annoying ex-wife of Charles from Younger lmao who isn't annoying in this movie) stumbles upon a personal ad in the 'women seeking women' section, she answers it and meets Helen, a funny hipster, who she clicks instantly with.

Just My Luck

Starring Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine. It's about a woman who has all the luck in the world and a loser who she kisses at a costume party which triggers some sort of a curse and he gets all of her luck. Do not expect a masterpiece, it's just some harmless fun and Chris Pine looks FINE in the movie.

The Duff
Bianca (Mae Whitman) finds out her classmates think she's the designated ugly fat friend to her best friends so she decides to reinvent herself with the help of a cute jock, Wesley (Robbie Amell). I absolutely adore this movie, and Robbie looks like a snack in it.

Just Friends
Chubby teen Chris (Ryan Reynolds) loved his best friend, Jamie (Amy Smart) all throughout high school and one day he confessed his feelings but she friendzoned him. 10 years later, he's hot and skinny and dating a crazy pop star (Anna Faris) but he's still pining for Jamie so he returns to his hometown to try to win her love.

She's The Man
Viola (Amanda Bynes) likes to play football and she poses as her twin brother at his college so she could play football while he's in London, but she falls for his roommate (Channing Tatum) which causes complications. This movie is always so fun to watch, Amanda always picked fun movies to star in.

Wild Child
A spoiled brat (Emma Roberts) is shipped off to an English boarding school where she has to follow the rules, there she ends up making friends and falling for a cute guy (Alex Pettyfer) who she falls for

This a post to discuss romcoms, so be nice and have fun <3

ONTD Original: The Real Story Behind Mariah Carey's 'Fantasy' Remix Featuring Ol' Dirty Bastard

$

I'm sure most of you know 'Fantasy', the #1 hit from Mariah Carey that was her ninth number one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Released on September 12, 1995 the song became the first single by a female artist to debut atop the chart, and only the second single to do so after "You Are Not Alone" by Michael Jackson. The Elusive Chanteuse recently sat down with Genius for an in-depth conversation about her career and what's most important her pen game. She candidly spoke about 'Fantasy' and its legendary remix featuring one of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, Ol' Dirty Bastard.

As entertaining as the Genius event was, it only covered a handful of songs from Mariah's career spanning over two decades. There should be an entire series that would devote at least one hour to each and every Mariah record tbh. But we love Genius, we appreciate what we got. Turns out the story behind the 'Fantasy' remix and its video is much more complicated and entertaining, and deserves to have its own post. The song was an iconic moment for many reasons. It broke records, but also paved the way for pop acts doing features with rap artists. Not everybody knows that. The story of how the remix and its video came to be doesn't even need bullet points, cause it deserves to be read in its entirety. It's that good. So get your 🍿 ready and pls enjoy the tweet below which includes an excerpt from this Billboard article which details stories behind some of Mariah's greatest songs.

ONTD Original - Is Gina Rodriguez purposefully anti-black?

$
0
0

With her latest nonsense coming to light people have been buzzing anew about Gina Rodriguez's intentions in regard to her feelings on black people and their works both in front of and behind the camera. This post isn't about debating if the points she makes are valid (often they are) or if what she's doing is anti-black (which it is) so much as it is debating whether or not it's intentional.

1. Forgetting that afro-latinos are latino

When trying to point out that the lack of diversity in Super Hero movies Gina made comments expressing desire for latino supers. Now, in and of itself this is not a bad thing but it does, however, erase that there are some afro-latinos currently in place, a point made by fans:

Diagnosis: inconclusive - While it's arguable that Gina meant clearly defined hero types or heroes onscreen inspired by latin culture to forget the likes of Zoe Saldana, who has always been loudly and fiercely latina, as well as Rosario, Lupita & others is very short cited.

2. What about our girls' trip?

To the surprise of not only white people but everyone who wasn't black 'Girls Trip' ended up being a smash success during last summer's movie season. P*r*z Hilton, busy body troll that he is, made mention that there needed to be a latina version. The problem? With tone being what it is the sentiment can come across as not allowing black works to stand on their own.

Diagnosis: Inconclusive - In the context of how black hypervisibility is treated this becomes an eyeroll worthy offense that seems to belittle the achievement of black people but the general sentiment seems innocent enough.

3. #LatinaPower lunch

https://instagram.com/p/BaSSTWRA2cs

In october of 2017 Gina Rodriguez shared a photo of a 'power lunch' she and America Ferrera organized celebrating fellow working latina actresses. The problem? People were critical of the fact that, aside from Rosario Dawson, there were no other afro latina attendees.

Diagnosis - negative. While it would've been really incredible to see more afro latinas there considering this was what seemed to be a personal event instead of an official industry one and the fact that Gina doesn't seem to know many afro latinas personally I'm not sure I want to fault her on this particular instance.

4. Gina vs. Blogxilla's compliment of Yara Shahidi

Expertly covered in an ONTD post two months ago while on a press tour for Little Foot with Yara Shahidi interviewer Blogxilla paid a compliment to Yara for being an inspiration to black girls. Gina gave us a lil bit of the Victoria Justice meme by saying she's inspiration to all girls, a point Blogxilla refuted both in the moment and later on when receiving push back:

Diagnosis - yes sis! Blogxilla pointing out how Yara is an inspiration to fellow black girls in particular doesn't preclude her from inspiring all of them so why she felt the need to reference everyone in this instance is beyond comprehension. Even if she wanted to point out how Yara inspires many she could've acknowledged that in a subsequent statement without undermining Blogxilla's point.

Which leads us to this latest kerfuffle from yesterday:

5. Gina on the salaries of latina actresses vs. other minority counterparts.

During a recent panel discussion with Emma Roberts, Gabrielle Union & Ellen 'BEEN' Pompeo for 'Net-a-Porter' to discuss working in the industry Gina Rodriguez felt compelled to compare salaries for latina actresses' lower salaries to other actors. Specifically fellow minorities. As quoted from Yesterday's post on the subject:

“I get so petrified in this space talking about equal pay especially when you look at the intersectional aspect of it, right? Where white women get paid more than black women, black women get paid more than Asian women, Asian women get paid more than Latina women, and it’s like a very scary space to step into. Because I always feel like I fail when I speak about it because I can’t help but feel already so gracious to do what I do and I feel like, culturally, I feel like I was raised to just feel so appreciative of getting here.”

Needless to say black people were not amused by this to say the least.

Diagnosis: YES SIS! Leaving out Sofia Vergara as an outlier - because her money comes not just from her work on modern family but all her varied endorsement ventures - pointing out that latina women are paid less is a decent point to make but NOT in comparison to other underpaid and undervalued workers who make less than white counterparts as well.

Closing thoughts: While the first 3 examples may go either way it's clear that the last two cannot and, given the context of them, it casts the first examples in a new light of skepticism. Why Gina feels the need to point out black accomplishments in order to contrast them with latina ones is beyond me but the shit is not cool, it's not lukewar-m and sure as hell is not hot! Get it together Gina.

1. Woody Harrelson's father was a contract killer

woody-harrelson-star-wars

Charles Harrelson killed multiple people, including a judge who was about to preside over a court case with a drug dealer. When Woody discovered the truth about his father, he spent millions of dollars trying to get him a retrial. Charles died in prison in 2007.

2. Katy Perry's family is extremely conservative

5616798c1400002200c7975a

There's conservative and there's conservative... with Perry's family definitively falling into the latter category. Katy was only allowed her to read the Bible, listen to the Sister Act soundtracks, and the word “devil” could not be spoken. She protested outside of Madonna and Marilyn Manson concerts.

Perry said: "My house was church on Sunday morning, church on Sunday night, church on Wednesday evening; you don’t celebrate Halloween; Jesus gives you your Christmas presents; we watch Bill O’Reilly on TV. That was my whole childhood and youth and early teens. I still have conditioned layers dropping off of me by the day.”

While her parents are Trump supporters these days, Katy Perry supported Hillary Clinton's run and is an advocate for Planned Parenthood.

3. Jackie Chan's mother was a drug dealer and married the cop who caught her

methode_times_prod_web_bin_61cd36b2-238a-11e8-a25c-0a92182647c9

Jackie's father Charles Chan was a spy who worked against Japanese aggressors in the Second Sino-Japanese War before growing sick of government corruption and quitting to become a port inspector in Shanghai.

After her previous husband was killed by a Japanese bomb, Jackie's mother Lee-Lee was forced to abandon her daughters and make a living in Shanghai. She soon discovered she had a talent for gambling and opium smuggling, and before long she had earned the street nickname of "Big Sister". Her operation eventually ran afoul of port inspector Charles Chan, and in a surprising turn of events the two immediately hit it off.

where's the movie script tho???

4. Drew Barrymore was exposed to drugs early on

5abcf15632167419008b461e-750-563

It's no secret how messed up Drew's childhood was. Her mother dragged her into nightclubs at a young age and as a result, Drew began to drink at the age of nine, smoke cigarettes and marijuana at the age of ten, and snort cocaine at the age of twelve. At thirteen, Drew had already undergone two stays in rehab. Fortunately - against all odds - she managed to turn her life around and has been sober for a long time.

5. Jim Carrey's family was homeless for a while

Jim-Carrey-1

Jim dropped out of high school to help his father pay the bills, both working as a janitor and a security guard. His family still lost their home and were forced to live out of a van for a while. Jim started doing stand-up comedy in that time to earn some extra bucks.

6. 50 Cent had a rough childhood and started dealing drugs when he was 12

14512

It's an understatement to say that 50 Cent's upbringing was uncommonly rough. His mother died in a fire when he was eight, and he grew up with his grandparents afterwards. At age twelve, Jackson began dealing narcotics when his grandparents thought he was in after-school programs and brought guns and drug money to school. In the tenth grade, he was caught by metal detectors. "I was embarrassed that I got arrested like that ... After I got arrested I stopped hiding it. I was telling my grandmother, I sell drugs."

7. Leighton Meester was born in a prison hospital

gettyimages-1012960656

Leighton's upbringing couldn't have been more different from that of her most notable role, the rich and glamorous Blair Waldorf. Her mother served time for marijuana drug trafficking and gave birth to her in a prison hospital. At the same time, Leighton's father also served a sentence for drug-related crimes. Her grandparents took on the role as her caretakers until she turned eleven.

8. Kelsey Grammar lost most of his family in violent ways

kelsey-grammer

Kelsey Grammar's life is one defined by extreme tragedy. When he was just 13, his father was murdered by a taxi driver. If that wasn’t awful enough, Grammar’s sister was violently murdered when he was 20. A few years following this, his two half-brothers were killed in a scuba diving accidents (one apparently attacked by a shark and the other dying while trying to help him). Later in life, Grammar lost a close friend in the 9/11 attacks. Another close friend was murdered by his wife.

9. Salma Hayek is the daughter of an oil company executive

imago83189694h

Salma's childhood was an extraordinarily charmed one. She grew up in a wealthy family and was (by her own admission) spoiled at every turn. Her was father was an executive at an oil company. Her mother Diana was a former opera singer and philanthropist and opened a school to introduce children to music.

10. Dylan McDermott grew up in the criminal underworld

1280_maggie_q_dylan_mcdermott_488201266

Dylan's life story reads like the script of a particularly gruesome gangster movie. He was born to the teenage girlfriend of gangster John Sponza (who was not his biological father). Sponza would go on to murder Dylan's mother five years later, a fact not discovered until long after Sponza himself discovered shot dead in the trunk of a car. Dylan spent much of his childhood with his grandmother in a terrible neighborhood, eventually tracking down his father in New York and helping him out in his seedy bar. Dylan was later adopted by his stepmother Eve Ensler, despite her being only a few years his senior and long since divorced from his father. Ensler got him into acting.

Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI (David Grann)
WINNER: Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime

After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. One of her relatives was shot. Another was poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more Osage were dying under mysterious circumstances, and many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered. As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including a Native American agent who infiltrated the region, and together with the Osage began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.

When a team of scholars, archaeologists, and filmmakers make it inside the ark for the first time, they discover an elaborate coffin in its recesses. The artifact tempts their professional curiosity; so they break it open. Inside, they find an ugly, misshapen cadaver—not the holy man that they expected, a hideous creature with horns. A massive blizzard blows in, trapping them in that cave thousands of meters up the side of a remote mountain…but they are not alone.

On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid — a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.

Even when they are joined by a fugitive witch with a tendency to set things on fire, the prospect of facing down monsters and retrieving ancient artefacts is preferable to the abomination he left behind. But not everyone is willing to let the Eboran empire collapse, and the adventurers are quickly drawn into a tangled conspiracy of magic and war. For the Jure'lia are coming, and the Ninth Rain must fall...

Bluebird, Bluebird (Attica Locke)
WINNER Edgar Award (Best Novel), Ian Fleming Steel Dagger for Best Thriller, Anthony Award (Best Novel)

When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules--a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the lone star state, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home. When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders--a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman--have stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment. Darren must solve the crimes--and save himself in the process--before Lark's long-simmering racial fault lines erupt. A rural noir suffused with the unique music, color, and nuance of East Texas, Bluebird, Bluebird is an exhilarating, timely novel about the collision of race and justice in America.

ONTD ORIGINAL: Your Fave is Problematic, starring Keanu Reeves

not this time, dude

Inspired by the current Keanussance (he has more sequels on the way than a Duggar!), I have decided to take a closer look at this perennial fave and many people's first crush, possibly ruining all of your hopes and dreams in the process.

Is Keanu, or Bae-anu as he is known in some circles, the immortal non-problematic cinnamon roll we all think he is?

I regret to inform you, the answer is N O P E !

Way, way back in the year 2000 Keanu starred as domestic abuser Donnie Barksdale in the film The Gift. Like many actors, he thoroughly researched his role, including spending time with abusive men like the character he plays. It was all going fine until it came time to do interviews and unfortunately he decided to show his FULL ass, and not in the way I once dreamed of. Lets rip the bandaid off first.

Here he is talking about witnessing an assault on a woman and not stepping in to help her, from a Rolling Stone article entitled "The Quiet Man: The Riddle of Keanu Reeves" published in 2000:

“I wanted to find out the thinking,” Reeves explains. “I met this one guy, and he ended up by the end of the night beating up his girlfriend. In front of the bar.”

Didn’t you feel like stepping in?

“Of course. The way it happened is a long story . . . That I’m not going to tell.”

I suppose you must have been horrified, but also part of you must have been thinking, “This is great, this is just what I needed”?

“Yeah, sure.”

Does that make you feel guilty?

“We’re all guilty. [A laugh] Do I feel guilty? I wish that didn’t happen. I didn’t punch her in the head. I wish he hadn’t.”

glittertextmaker.info

BTW, Keanu is 6'1", grew up playing hockey and filmed The Gift after he did The Matrix, for which he received extensive martial arts training.

Here he is describing some fucked up sounding rehearsals and joking about how he used his newfound skills from playing a horrible monster on his ladyfriends, from Playboy in 2006:

PLAYBOY: Hilary Swank played your wife and was the recipient of your brutality. How did it feel to summon that rage and bully a woman?

REEVES: A part of me was afraid of my violent side. Once Hilary and I were improvising in a trailer. I just kept saying "You're lying. You're lying. You're lying." We were rehearing this argument, and Sam said, "Every time you say, 'You're lying,' instead of saying it, just hit her." Hilary was like, "No, Donnie, I wasn't-" [makes slapping noise] "Donnie, I wasn't-" [slaps] Sam was like, "Grab her face."This went on until finally I pushed her up against the wall and started taking her pants off. I stopped, but it was very scary. It was like, "Oh shit. Okay. Now I get it. I get it." It was very frightening.

PLAYBOY: Did it help Swank prepare for her role in Million Dollar Baby?

REEVES: [Laughs] Yeah. And by the way, I also learned a bit of... well, that some of the ladies don't mind it, so... Nah, that's awful to say.

what the fuck?!

:(

Moving on, lets dig even deeper into his past to a film he did called Little Buddha which was released in 1993 and features brownface, a party city clearance wig and one of the worst "indian" accents I have ever heard, enough to make even Hank Azaria cringe...

Here's a clip:

Heres a video of him talking about getting browned up everyday (at 1min):

opposite of fun fact: this film was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci who alledgedly conspired with Marlon Brando to assault and humiliate 19 year old actress Maria Schneider on the set of Last Tango in Paris. Here is an ONTD post that briefly discusses it.

dis-honorable mention:

This Taxi Driver themed photoshoot for Harpers Bazaar he did with 14 year old Chloe Grace Moretz playing the child prostitute role is creepy and in really poor taste, IMO.

The moral of the story is: trust no man one. Don't put people up on a pedestal, there's always some messiness to uncover.

ONTD will you continue to stan this coward who is definitely aging, seriously just look at any HQ picture of him?

ONTD Original: Britney Spears''Circus,' 10 Years Later

$

0

Ten years ago today, Britney Spears released Circus, her sixth studio album*. Arriving one month after her legal team requested that the temporary co-conservatorship due to end that year be made permanent, in retrospect Circus seemed to serve as both a bookend to Spears' tumultuous past few years and a subterfuge designed to direct attention away from their aftershocks.

Described as an equally fierce, less autotuned sequel to Blackout—an album whose conception and release has become the stuff of near-myth—Circus saw Spears reuniting with some of her earliest teen pop collaborators, going "all the way back old-school."The most notable homecomer was Max Martin, the Swedish hitmaker who after penning and producing some of her biggest early hits ("...Baby One More Time,""Oops!... I Did It Again") was shown the door when Spears pursued a more womanly sound for 2003's In the Zone. Together the pair would craft "If U Seek Amy," one of Circus' cheekier moments and arguably Spears' most controversial single to date. Guy Sigsworth ("Everytime,""Someday (I Will Understand)") would be brought back into the fold to produce two ballads, one being the much-maligned "My Baby," and longterm manager Larry Rudolph returned as executive producer after a four year absence.

Elsewhere in the album credits, brand new names appeared. Lead single "Womanizer," released October 3, introduced Atlanta-based production team The Outsyders; Rob Knox helmed the trip hop-influenced "Mannequin," and "Mmm Papi" marked the maiden production of Canadian EDM trio Let's Go to War. It may have been lighter and more radio-geared than its predecessor, but Circus by no means saw Spears resting on her sonic laurels.

The album is also noteworthy for its strong performance in a changing radio landscape, one which Blackout arguably pioneered. With Circus Spears returned to the top of the Billboard 200, moving over 505,000 units in the first week, and "Womanizer" temporarily held the record for greatest leap to the top of the Hot 100, having debuted at #96. The song, termed by Spears a "girl anthem," was her best-seller in the US since "...Baby One More Time" a decade prior, and Circus further mirrored the album of the same name by spawning two Top 10 singles and three Top 20 singles.

Much of this can be attributed to the vigorous promotion by Spears in the run up to the album's release—where Blackout was an apparition, Circus was an event. A year and a half in the making, it marked the longest amount of time Spears had spent preparing an album to that point, and fans were given unprecedented insight to her process when Britney: For the Record premiered on MTV on November 30.

Shot between September and November 2008, For the Record was originally conceived as a reality series following Spears as she staged her (don't call it a) comeback to the music industry before being announced as a feature-length documentary by MTV in early October. Spears set no boundaries for what ground the film may cover, and the final product saw her addressing fame, healing and motherhood with a specificity she never had before, and hasn't since. "I do not see how I got through [the last few years]," she reflected in one of its most vulnerable moments. "I sit there and I look back, and I'm like, 'I'm a smart person... What the hell was I thinking?'"

Spears then set her sights on rehabilitating her image as a performer, that infamous 2007 VMAs opener still fresh in the minds of the public. She'd perform "Womanizer" in four countries in under one week—appearances in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, culminating with a headlining performance at the Big Apple Circus on the morning of her 27th birthday. Bright eyed and slim waisted, the spell seemed officially broken, the Princess reawoken and poised to reclaim her throne.

Reclaim it she did. With her Big Apple appearance came the announcement of the Circus Starring: Britney Spears tour, set to begin in March and see Spears traversing three continents over the course of nearly 100 shows. A three-ring in-the-round spectacle, each show was preceded by a video in which Spears shoots Perez Hilton dead with a crossbow, and marked the live debut of six Blackout tracks ("Gimme More" was notably excluded). All told, the tour would gross nearly $132 million, making it the #17 highest grosser of the decade.

From there, Spears began a slow but steady retreat into herself.

In her 2016 essay "Leaving Britney Alone," Lindsay Zoladz notes Spears'"gradual transformation into a rather distant, robotic pop star as an act of preservation [...] a cipher in plain sight," a transformation whose roots can arguably be traced to the end of the Circus era. Following the completion of her world tour in November 2009, Spears rarely appeared in public over the next 14 months.

A singles collection released on November 10 would spawn her third #1 single; an ode to ménages à trois, "3" would not be performed live until 2011. She would pop up, brunette and in a polarizing Dolce & Gabbana lace number, at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Five months would pass before she resurfaced, back to her trademark bottle blonde, at the premiere of Toy Story 3. Having firmly reestablished the Britney brand as a force to remain reckoned with, Spears seemed to be drawing a clear line between it and the still-so-young woman at its core.

In the ensuing near-decade, Spears has had her share of career ups (a $138 million grossing Las Vegas residency, 2016's critically acclaimed Glory) and downs (a broken engagement, Britney Jean). She followed up September 2009 perfume Circus Fantasy with nearly 20 more fragrances, one bottle of which allegedly sells every 15 seconds; Prerogative, her first unisex offering, arrived this summer. At present, she is rehearsing a second, new residency in Las Vegas. Britney: Domination is slated to open in February 2019 at the Park MGM, promising somethingmoreurban.gif than the blockbuster Piece of Me and employing state-of-the-art bleeding edge technology.

Having allowed her voice to be "robotized to the point of sounding posthuman" on its predecessor, Circus' sustained freshness owes much to how comparatively vibrant Spears sounds throughout. Her unmistakable soprano is breathy and warm one minute, cool and cutting the next—she sounds like she's having a ball. She sounds wonderfully alive.

*Circus was released in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland on November 28, 2008. In the US, its release coincided with Spears' 27th birthday on December 2.

ONTD ORIGINAL: 5 More Songs That Could Be Nominated For Best Original Song

$

Remember this post? Pretend that you do.

Here are 5 more songs not named "Shallow" that could be nominated for Best Original Song At The Oscars.

The Place Where Lost Things Go (Emily Blunt, “Mary Poppins Returns”)
Of course, we have no idea what context this is in, but we can look at the trailer and figure it out. Children are sad, she makes them not sad.
Time will tell if any of these songs can hold up to the original Mary Poppins movie, though I can expect you all to say “No”. I have no overwhelming nostalgia for the first film, this doesn’t bother me.
OTHER AWARDS: Best Picture?  Is there enough money for Disney to push this and "Black Panther"? (Yes.)
Best Actress is also a possibility for Live Action Disney Icon Emily Blunt.

What’s Up Danger (Blackway and Black Caviar, “Spiderman: Into The Spiderverse")
The unexpected Animated hit of the year so far, Into The Spiderverse has a bright and fresh vocal soundtrack to match. Who expected this to be more positively received than "Venom"? Everyone.
(There’s also a Post Malone song in the film, “Sunflower”, but who wants to talk about him?)
OTHER AWARDS: I am really hoping for Best Animated Feature! I hope Disney is so focused on paying for "Black Panther" and "Mary Poppins" galas, invites, and votes so this sneaks the win over "Incredibles" and "Ralph" sequels, but it’s up to those uninterested Academy voters. "Into The Spiderverse" hits theaters December 14th.

Suspirium (Thom York, “Suspiria”)
Now, I have not seen this, but I do think this song is nice. The film as a whole is probably far too “Out there” for Academy voters beyond this category.
OTHER AWARDS: York made the score as well, and if it sounds anything as nice as this, Best Original Score
If only this came out about thirty years in the future, possibly a “Best Remake Award”. Oh, but we still have "A Star Is Born". Sorry, "Suspiria"!

In This Place (Julia Michaels, “Ralph Breaks The Internet”)
This is another instance of “It’s sung by a character in the film and by a real singer in the credits” that "Coco" did for us last year with "Remember Me", except then the credits version was the inferior one.
Unlike most of the (broken?) internet, I enjoyed this movie a lot more than the original Wreck It Ralph.
What I did not enjoy, was this song sung in the film because none of the people involved are singers and it shows. The credits version is overly synthesized and modernly-poppy, but it’s still better than in the movie.
Though, on the FYC page, Disney is pushing this for best song under the performers in the film.
(Also Best Picture, ha)
OTHER AWARDS: Best animated feature.

I’ll Fight (Jennifer Hudson, Diane Warren, “RBG”)
I haven’t seen "RBG", not to be confused with “On The Basis of Sex”, another Ruth Bader Ginsberg movie this year, but it’s a documentary. Has a song in a documentary ever won best song?
OTHER AWARDS: Best Documentary. Also, this would be the third time Diane Warren would be nominated in the category this decade, after "Stand Up For Something" (Marshall), "Till It Happens To You" (The Hunting Ground), "Grateful" (Beyond The Lights)

What else that isn't called "Shallow" is out there this year?

ONTD Indie Release Guide Graphic.png

After a glut of huge studio releases, we’ve finally come to a week where no major studio is pushing out a new movie in wide release. Warner Brothers is releasing the Nick Nolte drama Head Full of Honey in select cities, but other than that, it’s more of the same as last week. The films listed are from studios other than the “Big Six” - Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Universal, Columbia and Disney. Note that some of the movies listed are in their first week or two of limited release in the USA, so it may take them a few more weeks (or months) to show up in your local arthouse theater or on VOD. Check out the posts from the past few weeks for more movies that may have just opened near you: November 21st, November 16th, and November 9th.

Artificial Intelligence: Grimes Steals Poppy's Shtick

$
0
0
El*n M*sk's very own manic pixie Grimes released her new single 'We Appreciate Power' yesterday. It's an ode to the uprising of artificial intelligence and all things robotic. Now, considering she's fondling Mr. Tesla himself and she's just a straight up nerd anyway, it makes a lot of sense for her to play around with this sort of narrative in a song. Only problem? This was Poppy's song and the exact narrative explored in her recently released album, "Am I A Girl?"

Basically, Poppy worked with Grimes on 2 songs. Play Destroy was featured on Poppy's own album, and We Appreciate Power was supposedly for the next album.

Poppy speaks about working with Grimes here:

"She followed me on twitter*, and I sent her a message and I said 'hey do you want to make a song' and she said 'okay' and then we met up outside of the studio and we talked about music. Then she came to my studio and we made 2 songs. 1 of them is on my album, and it's probably one of my favourite songs that I've ever been part of."
*Grimes no longer follows Poppy on twitter

It's perfectly reasonable for a song to be repurposed and for features to change, things happen. It's whatever. What isn't whatever though is the lyric content and the concept being explored. That concept is an integral part of the story Poppy has been selling ever since she evolved past being a Mars Argo rehash. Lawsuits are really good for creative development!

Join me in listening to some of Poppy's Am I A Girl? tracks. Together we'll find similarities both sonically and lyrically.

Time Is Up (feat. Diplo)

[verse 2]
Exponentially, every day I'm growing my memory
You wouldn't believe
Your life is meaningless, you're just like cockroaches
Extermination's your only hope
Human history, pollution, and overcrowded cities
That's your legacy
But don't look so depressed
You'll soon be nothingness
Oh my God, you don't even know

Literally about waking up as a robot and the fact robots and AI are gonna kill the human race.

Hard Feelings

[Pre-Chorus]
Am I a replica of someone that you loved?
(Someone you made me to replace)
Am I a replica of someone flesh and blood?
(Someone you made me to replace)

Seemingly referencing the whole Mars Argo situation. But with this now happening, it's developed a whole new layer. Sonically, it's the same vibe as We Appreciate Power. Also shout out to the bridge "Someone you made me to replace."

We Appreciate Power

[verse 2]
People like to say that we're insane
But AI will reward us when it reigns
Pledge allegiance to the world's most powerful computer
Simulation: it's the future

Lyrically the song is pretty much Time Is Up (redux), while sonically it fits right in with Play Destroy and Hard Feelings. IT'S OBVIOUS.

Anyway, it's not that serious and I've already exhausted too much energy and time on a post for ONTD in 2018, soooo.. In conclusion: Grimes literally stole Poppy's shtick and has not even acknowledged it in the slightest. At the very least, it's just rude.

Shawn Mendes Racist Past Resurfaces

After Shawn's racism was mentioned in the comments of Shawn's "I'm not gay" Rolling Stone interview, I decided to do a little digging to see whatisthetruth.gif.

This isn't the first time his sordid past has been exposed. Matter of fact, earlier this year InTouch Weekly reported on Shawn's old Instagram post from 2012 where Shawn used the n-word in his caption to describe his friend, Kareem. The caption said, "A regular day with mah n***** Kareem."

Shawn removed the caption after he received backlash. One user wrote "Delete Shawn before this comes to haunt you hoe."

This was before he tweeted and then deleted "Light skin girls>>>>>>". You thought he would have learned.

He also tweeted this to a fan telling her the black jumped out after she wrote some nonsense.

When he referred to himself as black

Shawn also thought it was funny when his hair looked like this:

Shawn has never acknowledged any of these posts. Maybe we should change that.

What's your favorite film from 2009??

ONTD Original: Top 12 episodes of the Doctor Who Universe.

$
0
0
As great as Doctor Who is, it's spin-offs are usually quite good and underrated. Here's a list of how Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Class rate along Doctor Who.

12. Doctor Who - 4x12 - The Stolen Earth

The beginning of the end of RTD's tenure was a great one. With Doctor Who and two spin-offs on the air, the best way to say goodbye was with one major proper crossover that also featured the return of old companions and the cliffhanger with the regeneration of David Tennant's doctor, had everyone gasping.

11. Torchwood - 3x01 - Children of Earth, Part 01

Great opening for Torchwood's new format and THE CHILDREN SCREAMING AT THE SAME TIME WAS SO FUCKING TERRIFYING. I CAN'T.

10. Class - 1x01 - For Tonight We Might Die

Class is an underrated gem, and the pilot was a demonstration that it dared to go where Doctor Who wouldn't. Gay characters, blood, scary monsters amputating legs, smart black girls, and women saving the day. Also, a Capaldi cameo!

9. Doctor Who - 5x10 - Vincent and the Doctor

Van Gogh coming to the present to see his legacy, cry his eyes out, and still managed to kill himself will never not make me cry.

8. The Sarah Jane Adventures - 4x05 - Death of the Doctor, Part 1

Sarah Jane was ah-mah-zing. And she managed to shine even more in the Doctor Who crossovers. In the death of the doctor, Sarah Jane meets another former companion, Jo Grant. The way in which they both re-encounter the doctor is just charming.

7. Doctor Who - 11x04 - Rosa

We had a post about it. I can't stop crying. But the newest season of Doctor Who went straight into feels mode.

6. Torchwood - 3x04 - Children of Earth, Part 04

I don't think a moment in TV has made people so angry as the time the 456 killed Ianto (and Jack). It was pointless, it was unnecessary, it was just for the sake of killing characters (which Torchwood did often. RIP Toshiko, Owen, Clem, Suzie, Gray, Esther). But it was still some great TV.

5. Class - 1x08 - The Lost

Class's season (and series) finale truly went out on a bang. Rising the stakes and actually killing a few parents of the gang. Making the shadow world actually scary and delivering a gut wrenching finale when they had to kill one of their own. And the final reveal that the Weeping Angels were behind everything!

4. Doctor Who - 8x04 - Listen

Doctor Who is great when it goes off-formula, and Listen was the perfect example, making people feel scared to death with something that we'll never know if was there or not. Bonus points for the scene of Clara meeting The Doctor as a child. Also, the 'what's under the covers' scene will give me nightmares forever.

3. Torchwood - 1x12 - Captain Jack Harkness

The first season of Torchwood is quite uneven, from orgasm eating aliens to resurrecting mittens and weird ass faeries. You could question the show's quality, but it truly became one of the greats when Captain Jack traveled to the past to meet the man he took his name from. A closeted Captain that was gonna die in the war, so Jack made him know what kissing a man felt before he was gone.

2. Doctor Who - 3x10 - Blink

THIS SHIT WAS SCURRY AS SHIT. And while Doctor Who has managed to make the Weeping Angels almost boring, their first encounter was great!. Oscar winner Carey Mulligan stars as Sally Sparrow, one of those one time companions, but certainly a memorable one. Blink is the episode you wanna show every Doctor Who fan to get them hooked. And also proof that Moffat was better in small doses.

1. Doctor Who - 7x15 - The Day of the Doctor

All the 12 doctors together...no sir, all 13! The 50th special doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Sure, it focused too much on just 10, 11 and the zygons. Sure, it introduced The War Doctor, just because Eccleston refused to be in the special. Sure, they couldn't manage to give us Marvel style de-aging tech. But overall, the fact that we got to see all the 12 doctors together (+ Capaldi's eyes) and Bad Wolf!Rose Tyler, makes up for it and makes the 13 TARDISes scene one of the best of the last 50 years.
