ONTD Original: Best (and worst) Lesbian and Bi Movie Kisses

$
0
0
We're told we're living in the golden age of television with representation ~everywhere, but sometimes we're tired. Sometimes it's too much to sift through a 45 min episode for a 3 second kiss, and we're worried we'll wear out San Junipero (not possible). But don’t worry, ONTD. Your girls imnotasquirrel, kimsungkyu, lolbye, lyricalharmony and christen_press are back. And when we write "Lesbian and Bi movies" we mean lesbian and bi movies. Not just subtext, because we will never forgive Bend it Like Beckham for being straight. TWO soccer girls and no gayness, like that adds up according to our math. These are the best (and worst) lesbian and bi kisses in cinema.

Best ‘wrapped in our comfiest flannel with our cat’ Kiss: Rachel and Luce
To most of the straight world Lena Headey is best known for fucking her brother on GoT and Piper Perabo for singing LeAnne Rimes' greatest hit and dancing on a bar. Us lesbians and bi girls know them best for what was probs one of the only happy lesbian romcom movies we had available during our baby gay days. It was a cold world before San Junipero, and San Junipero and, uh, all the other happy ending lesbian movies (we're still getting there ok it's a process). Never mind the ~cheating and Piper’s terrible English accent, THIS was the movie many of us curled up to and hoped that one day we too would have someone to scream “YOU’RE A WANKER #9” to. Since then we’ve taken some steps forward (and some backward *cough* The Kids Are All Right), but overall it still holds up pretty well when you’re in the mood to forget about being #foreveralone and the world falling apart.

Best Coming of Age Kiss: Atafeh and Shireen
Before the teens found her playing Adena on The Bold Type, we were stanning Nikohl Boosheri in the Lesbian coming of age drama Circumstance. This movie has all the drama and the kiss...when Shireen got scared on the family vacation during the thunderstorm and Atafeh comforted her and then comforted her we were all trying to mute the Tegan and Sara that started playing in our heads. Let the straights keep Boyhood with their little Oscars because this is a coming of age movie we can actually get behind.

Best Kiss From A Terrible Movie: Tala and Leyla
Listen, not every lesbian movie is a masterpiece. I’ll be honest that I Can't Think Straight is straight up terrible. The plot is nothing new. The acting makes Selena Gomez look like SaoRISE Ronan. It even lowkey looks like it was filmed by a drunk aunt at a child’s birthday party, but that's not the point! Because this is a cute movie with two hot women, where no one dies and we get to be happy at the end and the kisses are iconic. I'm 98% they only rehearsed the kissing part of the movie because ART is not an accident and the kissing is pure perfection. Plus it's under 90 mins and sometimes we're busy.

Best ‘recommended to everyone we know but it’s been #4 on our Netflix queue for 4 years' Kiss: Megan and Graham
But I'm a Cheerleader constantly tops the lists of best lesbian movies so obviously we recommend it every time someone asks for a rec, but we haven't "technically" seen it. We stanned the trailer, we added to our Netflix, and...here’s the thing, we're trying to dismantle the patriarchy and we're tired.

This does look cute tbh. Moving it up to position #3!

Best ‘kind of freaky but we were into it' Kiss: Lady Hideki and Sook-Hee
It’s okay to admit that The Handmaiden left you feeling a little uneasy. This wild ride should be the representative of r/justiceporn tbh. Stick through to the end because while there are some parts that made us want to ffwd, it all pays off in the end. The actresses have good chemistry and the sequel is sure to feature them further destroying the patriarchy. *HINT HINT Park Chan-wook*

Best Porn Kiss: Dallas and Jasmine
After we all watched Below Her Mouth we all had the same question, “when did Netflix start streaming porn?” Because this was the most ‘porn with a plot’ movie we’ve seen. A blonde KStew roofer catcalls this engaged fashion girl. Engaged fashion girl goes to a bar and sees blonde KStew and later faps to her in the bath, wasting so much water in the process tbh I judged her. Anyway, of course they start sleeping together and then the porn turns into an art house movie because they get all ~deep and ride carousels. It’s an experience. But Blonde Kstew is hot, and the sex scenes are hot so it works. To be honest, this is the movie we watch when we say we’re watching But I’m a Cheerleader.

Best Dead Lesbian Kiss: Paulie and Tori
If you only watch the first half, Lost and Delirious is a pretty good movie about two girls who are in love at boarding school. But as I said, that's just the first half. The rest of the movie is something straight out of the "let's make sure the gays know they will never find love and have no hope!" playbook. If the title itself didn't clue you into that, maybe the fact that Mischa Barton, the innocent str8 new girl nicknamed "Mouse" narrates the story will. Mouse was succesfully inducted into the gay agenda by Piper Perabo's character Paulie and went on to be sad and kiss girls as Marissa Cooper <3 .Somehow despite the tragic tropes, perhaps because of the acting of our lesbian movie queen Piper, this movie is half decent.

Best 'inspires us to download Her' Kiss: Alike and Bina
While Pariah is inarguably a great movie, the love interest sucks. When they finally kiss Alike is hesitant. We have watched her wrestle with her identity and feelings the entire movie up to that point and it's satisfying to see her finally make a move. She is transformed in that moment, but sadly everything is quickly snatched away. Fortunately since this is a good movie and not Lost and Delirious, despite everything crashing around her Alike finds hope and paves the way for a future on her own terms so despite the flop love interest and grim reality of it, Pariah leaves us with a little bit of hope in these dark times!

Best Bait: Lorraine and Delphine
We love Charlize, but we'll be honest in saying that unless she's playing someone relatable (i.e. midlife crisis and hating babies) we're not watching ha movies. We love from afar. But when our friends rushed to tell us about this kiss you bet we were buying movie ticket after movie ticket and preordering the second the movie ended. Of course the movie was good, the music was amazing, the clothes worked, but most importantly the kiss and sex scene were
.
When Lorraine got all soft holding Delphine in bed- heart eyes. Even though it made more sense with the plot, we got all ‘suddenly I can’t read, I don’t know’ when James McAvoy became our #1 most hated man. In our reality Lorraine and Delphine lived happily ever after with “Voices Carry” on repeat. Charlize really got us to watch a spy movie several times. And now any time you're in an uncomfortable situation with a lesbian or bi you just have to say "So...Charlize in Atomic Blonde" and awkward silence broken! What kind of impact.

Worst Coming of Age Kiss: Lucy and Amy
Did you ever want the gay version of James Bond, Mission Impossible or the Bourne movies? Well re-watch Atomic Blonde then because this is none of that. BUT if Charlie’s Angel was made with literally 1/20th of its budget and featured a bunch of D list actresses than you would get D.E.B.S. It’s campy, entertaining, and has gay ladies, so what’s not to like?! Hottie Jordana Brewster of Fast and Furious fame plays Lucy Diamond a career criminal who has a weird grudge against Australia (who can blame her tbh… OP NOTE: this is very disrespectful) and falls for good girl Amy played by a blonde. Overall, as one of the few lesbian films with a happy ending this corny movie holds a special place. If you needed more incentive to watch this movie also features Holland Taylor (pre fucking Sarah Paulson) and was the directorial debut of gay director Angela Robinson.

Worst Bait: Jenny and Kitty
Jenny’s Wedding, where do we even start with Jenny’s Wedding besides praying for the misguided ONTDers who liked it! Not only do Jenny and Gilmore Girl have no chemistry, but this movie isn’t even about the gays! If Hallmark Movie Channel made a lesbian movie 14 years ago and cut out all the gay parts for red state grandmothers who are trying to watch to understand why their granddaughter brought a girl named “Sam” with a nose ring to Thanksgiving that would be this movie. Jenny's Wedding is basically the 2nd worst lesbian movie aka the 3rd best straight movie by default.

Idc what the song said these kisses did not “keep me warm.”

Worst ‘would’ve been a good movie if a man hadn’t made it’ Kiss (aka Worst Porn Kiss): Emma and Adèle
We'll be honest, of this lesbian-bi focus group only half of us finished the entire movie, while the other half hate ourselves. We all tried, but the spaghetti was too much for some of us. Why are we talking about the scissoring scene when it's the spaghetti that's the real story here?? This movie is like porn for people who have a spaghetti fetish. We kept watching this kiss and imagining Adèle's spaghetti mouth all up in there, and no wonder Emma left her! We almost put the kiss under a Not Safe for Life spoiler cut, but we don't want to kink shame and for a community that occasionally thirsts over Adam Driver we thought there must be at least one member into spaghetti porn. But the rest of us aren't here for it, whether it's spaghetti worms or this BITWC shit. And not to bury the lede or anything, but when you consider the BTS stories of the director being an abusive asshole to the two lead actresses, we have a solid contender for the "worst porn."

Worst Kiss: Nic and Jules
While Charlize used her powers to bait us into a good movie we didn't want to see, The Kids Are All Right did the exact opposite! We were all at the movies excited to see an established lesbian couple raising their awful kids, drinking their Metamucil, all the things the straights take for granted. They even gave them the gayest names ever in "Nic" and "Jules" only for us to find out that "Jules" is cheating, and not even with another hot mom but with the sperm donor! Like I have legit never been so cinematically disrespected. Even taking out all the conversation surrounding a lesbian leaving her partner for A MAN, it was current Mark Ruffalo. Current Mark Ruffalo! The man hasn't seen a shower since 2007 it was just too much. And even worse all the straights were like 'wow what a brave movie.' Well thank you Alvin. I'm glad to know fucking a man is so brave. We’re the only ones who saw Chloe and Julianne does this to us- WORST KISS!

Looking like Emison from Pretty Little Liars. I want a refund.

Best Almost Kiss: Wil and Vivian
These two are just the most adorable couple ever, I can't. Wil is a giant fucking dork who falls to the ground when a beautiful woman hits on her, because why not? I think we've ALL been there. Vivian meanwhile is a smooth bitch who knows how to seamlessly segue from teaching someone how to dance (fall) to seducing her, because once again why not? We all want to find either the Vivian to our Wil or the Wil to our Vivian. And if you don't think this is the cutest moment ever in a lesbian movie, then turn in your LB membership card and go watch Jenny's Wedding for 10 hours straight because it's what you deserve.

Best Kiss: Carol and Therese
Let me just start by saying that if you came in here with one negative thing to say about Carol, save it because that’s a bannable offense (check the rules). Carol is the subtle masterpiece that lesbians and bi girls were waiting all their lives for. The sweet, loving yet troubled romance between Mara’s Therese and Blanchett’s Carol was heartbreaking and yet it’s what we all desire. It came to a head when Therese finally said “fuck it” and kissed Carol like no one’s ever been kissed before. Their passion sent aftershocks right through Harge’s very core, causing him to have a mental break. Sorry, Harge. And speaking of- if you walked out of that theatre thirsting for Harge instead of praying for Cate to take you on a ‘glove lunch’ seek the Lorde.

Who do you think is the most beautiful Bollywood actress?

*Ok, so since there were a lot of objections in the comments section to my original post due to the list being so short and excluding many other renowned beauties in Bollywood, I decided to delete that post and start over. I've expanded the list to include several more actresses, and my original post was admittedly quite lazily done so I'm happier with this one..

Aishwarya is known mostly for her beauty, and she was even crowned Miss World in 1994. Her best looks were in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, and Shabd, in my opinion.

Urmila Matondkar

Madhubala

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Madhubala is often referred to by many as the most beautiful actress in Bollywood cinema. Her immense charisma added to her appeal, and she dazzled audiences in popular films such as Mughal-e-Azam, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, and Mahal. Like Meena Kumari, Madhubala also had an untimely death and passed away at a young age. She died in 1969 when she was only 36 years old and it was the result of complications from her ventricular septal defect.

Vyjayanthimala

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The radiant Vyjayanthimala was especially alluring in Amrapali, Ganga Jamuna, and Sangam.

Rani Mukherjee

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Rani is a complete gem and her smile is to die for. Her most beautiful looks are from Hum Tum, Saawariya, and Dil Bole Hadippa!

Kajol

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

You know a person is gorgeous when they can look that good even with a unibrow! Kajol looks the most divine in Yeh Dillagi, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Fanaa.

Sonam Kapoor

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Sonam actually has a terrible personality and is quite a brat, and that is why I originally omitted her from this list, but one can't deny that she is stunning. Her beauty is the most exuberant in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Saawariya, and Aisha.

Sushmita Sen

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Sushmita wasn't crowned Miss Universe in 1994 for nothing. She is just nothing short of lovely. Her peak looks were in Sirf Tum, Biwi No. 1, Main Hoon Na, and the Mehboob Mere song from Fiza.

ONTD Original: 10 Facts About Cultural Icons Lola Flores and Yma Sumac

Lola Flores and Yma Sumac are famous for using the rich heritage of their countries for their performances.
Lola Flores
nJZrjC.jpg
“She can't sing, she can't dance – don't miss her!”- New York Times critic

Born in Spain, Lola became a symbol of traditional Andalusian folklore post Spain’s civil war. She excelled at flamenco, chotis, and copla. She was given acclaim for her ability to perform “cante jondo”, which has its roots in Arab culture. She toured Latin America and was so famous that a statue was created in her honor in her hometown of Jerez de la Frontera.

1) When she was 10 years old she sang in local bars and taverns
2) She became well-known nationally for singing with popular flamenco artist Manolo Caracol
3) Usually played the part of a “gypsy” or a Mexican peasant
4) Lola was identified as a “gypsy” by herself and the media because she grew up in a neighborhood with a large Romani population. She felt part of the community and spoke out about Romani issues from time to time. This drew much criticism because of her lavish lifestyle after she became famous.
5) Her performances in Mexico City pulled record numbers for ticket prices
6) She was so desired in Mexico that one of her many suitors left her a note saying, “My car, with a fur coat inside, will be waiting for you every night."
7) One of Spain's highest-paid entertainers
8) She said Winston Churchill hugged her and praised her performance
9) In 1987 and 1991 she was guilty of tax fraud and imprisoned for 16 months
10) King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia called Lola “one of the greatest artists of this century”

Yma Sumac
nPAcCr.jpg
“Never in 2,000 years has there been another voice like hers.”- Moises Vivanco
Yma Sumac was born in the village of Ichocan, Peru. Over the course of her career there were many rumors and myths surrounding who she was. Because of her maiden name “Atahualpa”, she was believed to be a descendant from the last Incan ruler. The mystery surrounding her background only enhanced her celebrity.

1) She grew up in the Andes with her father, the mayor, and her mother, a school teacher
2)Her father was part Spanish and mother full-blooded Incan
3) She trained herself to sing until she felt she perfected her technique at age 17
4) She claimed she sang in 5 octaves
5) In 1950, her first album "Voice of the Xtabay” was released and beat Bing Crosby on the charts
6) She was so popular in the Soviet Union that her 2 week tour was extended to 6 months
7) She appeared in 2 films "Secret of the Incas" and "Omar Khayyam"
8) Her professional name was originally spelled “Imma Sumack” but Capitol Records changed it
9) Yma divorced her husband musicologist, Moises Vivanco, after he had twins with Yma’s private secretary
10) In 1957 she made an honorary citizen of Brooklyn, New York

Lola and Yma's talent blossomed from the roots of their nations. They will always be remembered for spreading awareness of their cultures through their art.

ONTD Original: 10 shows or movies that may have influenced Netflix's Dark

$
0
0

The missing children, flickering lights, the shadowy local job-center, a (partial) 80s setting, another dimension... Netflix's new sci-fi drama, Dark, was marketed as a "German Stranger Things". However, following its debut, most reviewers seem to be playing down that comparison in favor of other media. Here are ten shows or films that came to mind as I was watching Dark.

Forbrydelsen
This Danish show - later Americanized to become 'The Killing' - featured a missing teen, a community in crisis, and the dark and dour feel that defines the 'Nordic Noir' genre.

Donnie Darko
One music cue and costume combo from Dark seems to be a direct reference to this cult-favorite movie. They also share a few overarching elements, like time travel and a teen lead with a questionable grasp on reality.

Twin Peaks
Dark shares a gloomy town, a forest hotel, and a small-town cast of characters - including one senior citizen who seems to know more about a recent death than they can verbalize - with this David Lynch series.

The X-Files
British Columbia's perpetual fog and drizzle became a character of its own in the 90s Sci-Fi series, but the show's true charm was the human drama between the two leads as they unraveled mysteries about aliens and government conspiracies.

True Detective
A dying town, curious corpses, and low-key Satanic panic? It's bleak, man. The director of Dark, Baran bo Odar, took inspiration from Cary Fukunaga and directed Dark's ten-episode run himself.

Les Revenants
People coming back from the dead provided the slowly unraveling central mystery in this French drama. Yet again, the familial relationships and sense of claustrophobia prove Europe has a firm handle on small-town dread, especially of the supernatural variety.

IT
A town infested with a recurring evil, a yellow raincoat, an 80s setting, and a subterranean world into which children disappear? Check, check, check, and check.

La Jetée
Later used as a spinning-off point for the movie 12 Monkeys, this classic French short explored the inevitability of fate in relation to time travel, across three different eras.

Don't Blink (Doctor Who)
Before Doctor Who ruined one of their better villains with overexposure, the idea of getting transported to another time in which you're forced to live out the rest of your life was frankly terrifying.

Lost
The two shows share strange, loud, industrial noises immediately preceding disappearances, but the end of season one of Dark also leaves viewers with as many questions as answers. If Netflix renews the show, fans are hoping the creators have a solid plan mapped out... unlike certain other dramas.

Welcome to the 2018 ONTD Reading Challenge! We had a lot of fun in 2017 with the first ever ONTD Reading Challenge (though we know that for some, reading the posts here is already quite the challenge). Now, milfordacademy& hjalmartazar invite you to join the new and updated 2018 ONTD Reading Challenge: 12 books, 12 months, and ONTD-themed categories. Every month, we will make a post recommending books that fit each category.

The rules are simple:

  • Each month, read a book that corresponds to the category.

  • No page limit.

  • It can be a book that you’ve already read.

  • Novellas, graphic novels, and anthologies can count toward a category.

  • Ebooks and audiobooks count as books!

  • If you missed a month, you can go back and read a previous month’s task.

  • Keep us updated on how your reading challenge is going in our book posts!

  • If you have a Goodreads account, join our ONTD Reading Challenge Group!

Thank you to EVERYONE who helped us in coming up with this year’s tasks for the challenge!

JANUARY -A book that is being adapted into a movie or TV show in 2018

It's always fun to read a book before it is made into a movie or TV show - you'll get to complain about all the things the adaptation didn't get right in the ONTD posts about it. (The post with recs for January’s books is coming soon!)

FEBRUARY -“Come to Brazil!”

It’s February, which means Carnaval in Brazil. Millions of people (including celebs) from all over the world flock to Rio, Recife, Salvador, São Paulo and other iconic cities to celebrate. This month, we invite you to Come to Brazil by reading books by Brazilian authors or that are about or set in Brazil (fiction or non-fiction).

MARCH - “Ha impact!”

Read a book by a female author who is considered to be influential and has had a significant impact in literature, culture and/or society.

APRIL - “Sure, Jan”

This month, read a book with an unreliable narrator!

MAY - “Men are weak!”

The oft-quoted expression (at least here on ONTD) came from the fantasy film, The Lord of the Rings. For this month, read a woman-authored fantasy.

JUNE - “Who?”

This month, learn more about someone by reading a biography or a memoir!

JULY - “It’s been 84 years”

Read a book that was published in 1934 OR written by an author who was born in 1934!

AUGUST - “The gossip is priceless”

This month, read a book about fame, show business or Hollywood (anything from a tell-all to a fiction book about someone famous).

SEPTEMBER - “What is the truth?”

This month, borrow Latoya’s magnifying glass and ask like Oprah: what is the truth? It’s time to read a mystery!

OCTOBER - “The darkest timeline”

This month, a twist on the spooky October theme! Read a dystopian or (post)apocalyptic book!

NOVEMBER - TL;DR

Can’t face another big-ass book? Let’s take it easy: this month, read a novella or a book under 150 pages.

DECEMBER - A book that won an award in 2018

This month’s challenge is a fun way to keep up with the year’s releases and with what’s happening in the literary world. The task is to read a book that won an award this year - any award you want. You can go high-brow with the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Man Booker Prize or the National Book Award, explore what’s best in speculative fiction with the Hugo and Nebula awards, get scared by the Shirley Jackson or Bram Stoker Awards, read women with the Women’s Prize for Fiction, fall in love with the Romance Writers of America (RITA Awards), etc!

Teen Mom Megastar & Underground Hip-Hop Mogul Debra Danielson-Merz Stuns in Sheer Floral Bodysuit

$

Wedding bells sounding ever so softly in the distance, Teen Mom star Debra "Debz OG" Danielson-Merz peeks up to the camera, a dreamy expression across her serene, almost supernaturally radiant face. She teasingly slips the strap of her (presumably designer sponsored) glittery heel off one shy foot, the glisten from her buttery legs softened by the gentle lighting and intoxicating ambience of the luxurious Grosvenor Hotel.

"Wedding pre-shot", she stated matter-of-factly, revealing little else about the very sexy (and very private) shoot.

Although the much-publicized wedding was only a month ago, for weeks she has thwarted the demands of a public that she has given so much of herself to, yet can never seem to satisfy. She alluded this was part of something more, a series perhaps of similar carnal treasures and no doubt, they would be for highly sought Infectious Disease Specialist, craft beer artisan and handsome husband, Dr. David Merz' eyes only.

Debz OG's breakout 2017 video by D&G Productions

The salacious photo came as a surprise for some fans since the young star doesn't seem to be dazzling the red carpet as much these days since making it official with Dr. David last month. The nuptial took place at the exclusive Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium (at Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha) on November 5th.

The hypnotic pair said "I do" among close friends and platonic family members who flew in from all over the world to witness the exclusive ceremony firsthand.

Among the dizzying number of reactions by adoring fans were probing questions about whether the in-demand star is currently involved in any projects.

Unfortunately for impatient fans, the busy starlet has no plans to go anywhere without her new man anytime soon. The two would much rather spend time in the kitchen getting messy with each other than out at a premiere or the hottest new club, according to the young artist's tweets.

"You look fantastic, Deb!" exclaimed dedicated fans in response to the bombshell photo released just four days ago. It's unclear if Debra will release the remaining photos to the public, but for now fans can rest assured that the sexy Debra Danielsen they know and love isn't going anywhere now that she is a married woman.

ONTD Original: 10 Facts About Rebel Icons Meiko Kaji and Tura Satana

By special request, we take a look at two actresses that were known for playing unapologetic, strong female roles. The type of characters that were not bound to the rules of society.

Meiko Kaji
nYUkK8.jpg
“Whenever I had a strong role I was always concerned to make it even stronger.”

Meiko Kaji, an actress that became a legend in Japanese cinema. She was most popular during the 60s/70s, playing roles of outlaws and gang leaders.

1) She was born Masako Ota, but changed her name to Meiko Kaji
2) She said there was an unwritten rule that actresses stay in the same type of roles to cater to a certain audience
3) She originally worked for film studio “Nikkatsu”, but once they started making soft porn films, she left to join Toei studio
4) In order to do sword fight scenes, Meiko had to learn traditional Japanese dance moves
5) Said it was typical of Japanese films at that time to use sensational catchphrases to draw audiences in. But really the plot would be more about social issues, like her film “Sex Hunter!” which was about the persecution of mixed-race teenagers.
6) Was known for her signature “Meiko stare”
7) Although she’s a well-known singer, she did not consider herself a pop star because it was normal for actresses to sing in the movies they starred in
8) She believes that turning a film into a series creates a decline in both the quality of the story and the character. She says that she quit the “Scorpion” series after the 4th film because the scenes were too brutal to film in order to create more shock value for audiences.
9) In 1978, Meiko’s work started to lessen for unknown reasons
10) One of her greatest roles was 1973’s "Lady Snowblood"

Tura Satana
nYU02b.jpg
“I stopped (acting) because I was not one to go sleeping with any of the casting directors. If my resume was not good enough to get the part I would just say thank and leave.”

Tura Satana, an American actress, was a wildcat both on and off the screen. Perhaps it was her no nonsense attitude that she built up in her youth that made her able to portray strong female characters so well in her films. Her movie career was short-lived, but so iconic that she has become a classic cult movie star today.

1) She was born in Hokkaidō, Japan, and grew up in Chicago, Illinois
2) She is of mixed heritage, Filipino, Scots-Irish, and Native American. Her looks made her a target of frequent harassment and fetishism.
3) She was gang raped at the age of 10 and because the boys had families who bribed a judged, she was sent to reform school as punishment for “leading them on”.
4) In her teens she started a vigilante girl gang to get back at the type of guys who raped her when she was young. After learning martial arts and 15 years later, she was able to take revenge on her rapists. They didn’t remember her until she told them.
5) She became an exotic dancer at age 15
6) She was picked for her first film in “Hawaiian Eye” because the producer thought she was well-built for an “oriental”. Which she says was unusual during that time for women of Asian descent.
7) Her breakthrough role in the 1965 film “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!”, was the first time director Russ Meyer used no nudity
8) She said her role as Varla in “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” was a way to release the anger she harbored from her childhood
9) She and Elvis Pressley dated, but ended their relationship because he wanted to marry her. She considered him to be very lonely despite his popularity.
10) She taught Elvis how to French kiss telling writer Pamela Des Barres, “Once I showed him the difference between how he was kissing and how I kissed, he said, ‘Oh God, that feels so good.’ When I said, ‘Yeah, it feels good all over too,’ his eyes lit up.”

Meiko Kaji and Tura Satana inspired filmmakers of today to create action parts specifically for women. Rebellious, beautiful, dangerous, and selfish. They played the "bad" girls of the 60's-70's.

Nicknamed the “Ice Queens” of cinema, these ladies were not taken seriously as actresses in the beginning of their careers due to their looks. But the more films they acted in, the more audiences and critics realized their talent.

Catherine Deneuve
nYU35i.jpg
“A woman has to be intelligent, have charm, a sense of humor, and be kind. It's the same qualities I require from a man.”

Catherine Deneuve is a notable French actress who was so popular she became a favorite of many popular directors. She was most known for her aloof and sexual characters. She became a huge icon in French pop culture and also famous internationally for her Chanel ads.

Rekha
nY96nE.jpg
“ Bombay was like a jungle, and I had walked in unarmed. It was one of the most frightening phases of my life... I was totally ignorant of the ways of this new world. Guys did try and take advantage of my vulnerability. I did feel, "What am I doing? I should be in school, having an ice-cream, fun with my friends, why am I even forced to work, deprived of normal things that a child should be doing at my age?" Every single day I cried, because I had to eat what I didn't like, wear crazy clothes with sequins and stuff poking into my body. Costume, jewelry would give me an absolute terrible allergy. Hair spray wouldn't go off for days even despite all my washing. I was pushed, literally dragged from one studio to another. A terrible thing to do to a 13-year-old child.”

Rekha became a huge Bollywood star through her determination and extreme makeover. She cultivated herself into a glamorous and mysterious image in the industry’s history. Even though her personal life had a lot of controversy, she never backed away from taking risks on screen.

1) Rekha’s parents were both famous actors
2) Rekha’s parents weren’t married when she born and her father denied his paternity which haunted Rekha through the years. Her father later tried to reconcile, but Rekha ignored him.
3) As a child actress she was told she was too dark, overweight, and unkempt
4) In 1966, her first film debut was in “Rangula Ratnam”
5) She was rumored to be the mistress of Amitabh Bachchan. Because of that she is a “persona non grata” to the older members of the Bachchan family. They’ve taken to not acknowledging her in public.
6) She won a national award for the film “Umrao Jaan”
7) She allegedly had a sultry relationship with Vinod Khanna, but it ended because his mother didn’t approve
8) Rekha was considered to be Bollywood’s first superstar during a time when women were just love interests of male heroes.
9) She follows her own style of life she calls “Rekha-ism”. Which she remains as private as possible and not to announce every little thing to the media or post on twitter.
10) She was only married once to businessman Mukesh Aggarwal. After many attempts, he was able to commit suicide and Rekha was blamed for his death because of her rumored affair with Amitabh. She never married again after her husband’s death.

Both these women worked hard for their place in the film industry and have made such an impact they became part of the "classics".

Neither of these women need much of an introduction. But for those who don't know, Eartha and Cleo captivated audiences with their voices and stage presence. They shined in musicals and dazzled for jazz lovers.

Eartha Kitt

“Live performance is so honest because of its immediacy from the audience. The audience is your best director. Live performance to me means that I'm growing all the time. So that's what I want to keep doing.”

Eartha was born on a cotton plantation in South Carolina. She became one of the most praised and talented performers on Broadway and on screen. Known for her signature purr, she was lauded as a sex symbol. She was very popular with the public and celebrities.

1) Eartha never knew her father and when her mother remarried, she was sent to live with other relatives. This was because her mother’s new husband objected to raising a mixed race daughter.
2) After a group of students at Benedict College found out her true origins, her response was that her fans were her true family

The CIA labeled her a “sadistic nymphomaniac” and no establishment in America would hire her. She had to continue her work in Europe.
7) In 1978 she had her comeback with the musical "Timbuktu!" and was invited back to the White House
8) In 1984 she was criticized for touring South Africa, but according to her it was for a good cause that helped build schools in for black children.
9) In 2007, she opened the newly renovated “Café Carlyle” in New York City
10) She was nominated for 3 Emmys, several Tonys, and 2 Grammys

Cleo Laine

Cleo Laine became Britain’s First Lady of Jazz after she soared to popularity with her amazing voice. She became known for her scat singing and high notes in her performances. One of the great icons of the jazz genre in England.

10) She was appointed “Dame Cleo Laine DBE”, which is the same as knighthood for women

ONTD Original: 6 times Deep Space Nine got real

2017 is almost over, and in spite of it all we do seem to be inching towards a Star Trek future - this year Chinese scientists teleported the first object from Earth to orbit, and Google introduced the Pixel buds with real-time translation software. But it's not only in the area of technical innovation the show was prescient. Next year one of the most lauded installments in the Trek universe, the seminal science fiction saga Deep Space Nine, will celebrate its 25th anniversary. There will no doubt be a lot of retrospectives, thinkpieces and sexy Alexander Siddig photoshoots to enjoy, but let's get a head start and look back at some of DS9's most hard-hitting episodes and why they're still relevant today.

Past Tense (season 3)

On paper this is a pretty standard time travel episode - Sisko, Bashir and Dax travel to the past, their arrivals mess with the timeline, mankind's history changes course, and unless they can set the motion of events right the Federation and the future they know will never even happen. However, this familiar skeleton plot is only an excuse to discuss the the situation of the homeless in America. The year the crew end up in is 2024, the city is San Francisco, and the homeless problem has gotten so out of hand that they live in "sanctuary districts" rife with violence and suffering. The middle classes and rich live in different districts, and figure the homeless are fine where they are and should be grateful they have a place to stay at all. Separated, Sisko and Bashir immediately get sent to a sanctuary district, while Dax finds herself among the rich...
Why it still works: Watching this episode in 2017 it's impossible not to see the paralells with the ongoing refugee crisis. At the time the episode aired it portrayed a dystopia, but today some 62,000 people in Greece alone are living it, failed by the international community. The show also gets props for subtly but deliberately including race in the conversation, as the two characters who get shipped to the district are moc while the one who ends up with the privileged is a white woman. That said, as a comment on how America treats its homeless it's still pretty relevant - this week news broke San Francisco (the city the episode is set in!) has started utilising security robots to deter homeless camps, breaking like, the very FIRST Asimov's law.

Far beyond the stars (season 6)
This is on the surface a really fun alternate universe episode, set in the fifties, with the regular cast looking just dashing out of their regular makeup and in period costume. Seriously, look at these BAMFs:

Benny Russell, played by Sisko actor Avery Brooks, is a member of the writing staff of the science fiction magazine Incredible Tales. The staff is remarkably diverse but they use pseudonyms to hide their gender and ethnicity. One day, however, Benny writes a story with a black space captain, peopling it with characters based on friends and family, here free to be who they are and achieve great things unhindered by their race, gender and class in a utopian future. The other writers love it but the editor argues racist ass sci fi nerds won't accept it, sending Benjamin - who had put his heart and soul into the story - spiralling.
Why it still works: Look no further than the reaction of so-called Trekkies who pooped their pants (and still, they are pooping) when Sonequa Martin-Green was announced as the lead in 2017's Star Trek: Discovery. Far Beyond The Stars is a dense, brave, intelligent episode which not only dares to (subtly) call out the show's fanbase, but also raises the topic on how systemic racism can traumatise an individual, and namedrops Langston Hughes, Richard Wright and Zora Neale Hurston for good measure.

It's only a paper moon (season 7)

The Ferengi soldier Nog, who lost a leg during battle in an earlier episode, returns from leave to Deep Space Nine. His friends and family come to greet him but he's depressed and sullen, refusing a welcome party. As a form of therapy he starts hanging out with the hologram Vic Fontaine, and eventually more or less moves into the holosuite, using his Ferengi acumen to expand the holosuite's casino business and hanging out with cool hep cat Vic. Eventually, Vic helps Nog realise he needs to rejoin the real world and face what happened to him, painful as it may be.
Why it still works: It's estimated that after two wars, nearly 500 000 American veterans suffer from PTSD today (according to this article, which also expands on my further points here). This episode is remarkable enough for dedicating 45 minutes of screentime to a secondary character dealing with PTSD from combat. What's really prescient is how it also shows him dealing with it through... well, gaming. Which is how a lot of former soldiers with PTSD are coping right now. The charity Stack Up has been going since 2015, it connects vets through gaming and has Oculus founder Palmer Luckey on its board. While Nog is listening to shit jazz and pouring his heart out to DS9's probably worst ever character (fight me, Vic fans) rather than idk shagging elves or whatever people do in World of Warcraft, he's found a world he prefers to the real one and yes - it ultimately ends up helping him deal with his trauma.

Doctor Bashir, I presume? (season 5)

Julian Bashir is asked to have his personality scanned, enabling other ships to have their own hologrammatic copies of the brilliant young doctor. While initially smug, Bashir's feelings about the project turn into horror as the interviewer invites his estranged parents to participate. Eventually the truth comes out. When mr and mrs Bashir realised their son was slow and would be care-dependent his entire life, they had the highly dangerous and very illegal genetic modification procedure performed on him in childhood. Uprooting their lives and starting over, their son became intelligent, capable, athletic - and very bitter about the circumstances that led to his success.
Why it still works: While the retconning of Bashir as some kind of genetic superman annoyed a lot of fans (and Bashir actor Alexander Siddig, who hated the storyline), the questions the episode raises are only becoming more and more relevant. In the early 2000s pre-natal tests were introduced determining Down's Syndrome at an early stage, leading to a significant drop in births of Down's Syndrome babies. As if that ethical debate wasn't heated enough, in 2017 the first human embryo was edited in the US (Chinese scientists have performed similar experiments earlier). How will the genetically "fixed" people of tomorrow feel about having deemed to be not good enough while still in the womb?

In the pale moonlight (season 6)

In the midst of war, captain Sisko enlists the services of Mr. Garak, the station's exiled Cardassian tailor. The Romulan nation is neutral in the Federation/Dominion war, but their cooperation could tip the balance in favour of the Federation. Having exhausted all diplomatic options to make them join the war, Sisko hopes Garak's less traditional methods might work. Ultimately, Garak is successful, but at the cost of a life and the Romulans entering the war under false pretenses.
Why it still works: This episode is hailed as one of the finest DS9 moments, and is a shining example of how television with faith in itself can create remarkable art. Huge parts of it is simply Benjamin Sisko addressing the camera and grappling with the moral implications of his actions. He is a good man who in the name of politics has allowed terrible things to happen - lucky Sisko shaved his head or he might have been as grey as Obama by the end of the show. And to tie it up with 2017 events, examples of sabotage and international political incidents have been too rife to sum up here - but even Garak would have been impressed by the sheer weirdness of Russia's troll factory strategy.

Rejoined (season 4)

Jadzia Dax, a Trill woman, is joined with the symbiont Dax who has lived with many hosts before her, and shares all of their memories. In Trill society there is a huge social taboo against a joined Trill resuming the familial relationships of previous hosts. Then one day another joined Trill, Lenara Kahn, arrives on the space station. Thing is, two previous hosts of the Dax symbiont and the Kahn symbiont were once a married couple (stay with me here). The two women, overwhelmed with recognition, fall "back" in love and decide to be together, to the horror of Lenara's family.
Why it still works: While this was obviously DS9's gay issues episode, it works as a metaphor for any two consenting adults who have to stand up to social control to be together - as depressingly relevant as ever. But while it's a great standalone episode that handles the material sensitively, it also stands as testament to an area where DS9 well and truly dropped the ball. While the episode deserves some kudos for featuring the sixth ever lesbian kiss aired on American television (if I'm reading this timeline correctly), the show never did manage to feature an actual gay relationship. Dax had been set up as pansexual from the start and the storyline with Lenara was interesting enough to sustain itself over an arc, but everything got neatly resolved in 45 minutes, leaving the ep looking a lot like most 90's ratings grabs lesbian kiss episodes. In fact, gay Trek fans had to wait until 2017 for on screen representation when Star Trek: Discovery came through (ok I am aware of Sulu's blink and you'll miss him boyfriend in the Kelvin timeline, but I rebuke those films and the weakness of that attempt). Still - at least we've progressed a little bit the last 25 years?

The real threat is whatever is out in the frigid darkness, stalking their ship, snatching one seaman at a time or whole crews, leaving bodies mangled horribly or missing forever. Captain Crozier takes over the expedition after the creature kills its original leader, Sir John Franklin. Drawing equally on his own strengths as a seaman and the mystical beliefs of the Eskimo woman he's rescued, Crozier sets a course on foot out of the Arctic and away from the insatiable beast. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.

May

WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE - The book by MARIA SEMPLE is being adapted into a movie by Richard Linklater starring Cate Blanchett, Judy Greer, and Kristen Wiig. Release date: May 11.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic. To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence - creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.

ONTD ORIGINAL: A look at all the trash men in Hollywood (Part 8)

$

0
Hollywood's worst kept secret finally received the attention it deserved this week thanks to the amazing and brave women who came forward with their stories. Harvey Weinstein was properly exposed for the vile piece of shit he truly is. While Hollywood wants to act shocked, there are many more men like Weinstein in the industry whether they are producers or actors. In light of the stories and accusations, I have decided to take a look at all the other men who still seem to have careers in Hollywood.

Fred Armisen
Fred Armisen has admitted to being a terrible husband and boyfriend. At least he has self awareness going for him. Elisabeth Moss called her marriage to Armisen "extremely traumatic". The couple were together for 8 months before the divorce was announced. Moss said that one of the greatest things she heard about him was that he was great at impersonating others but the greatest impersonation he does is that of a normal person. Armisen basically admits to loving her character on Mad Men and thinking she's like that irl until he understood that she was just acting the part. There have also been comments around gossip sites for years about how awful he really is and that he's a sociopath.

Sean Bean
Sean Bean just about dies in everything he's in and lbr he deserves to. In 2008, Bean spent a night in jail after his wife, Georgina Sutcliffe, called the cops on him. Georgina told the cops that he grabbed her and assaulted her during a fight in their home. In 2012, Bean was arrested for allegedly harassing Sutcliffe after making abusive calls and sending a number of text messages.

Laurence Olivier
Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh were married to others when they started their relationship. Their spouses wouldn't grant them divorce so the couple just moved in together while still married to other people. Laurence even had an infant son with his wife. In 1947, Olivier and Leigh's relationship faced it's own issues. During a tour through New Zealand and Australia, Leigh would refuse to go on stage. Cast and crew both witnessed the tumultuous fights between the pair that would escalate to slapping. After filming A Streetcar Named Desire, Leigh stated that the film tipped her over into madness. From there, Olivier begun to have numerous affairs. In 1958, Olivier and Leigh's marriage was basically over with Olivier having an affair with actress Joan Plowright. Leigh was also involved in her own affair with Jack Merivale. During his marriage to Leigh, Olivier had an affair with his 18 year old costar, Sarah Miles, in Term of Trial. He told Miles that he once pushed Leigh during a fight and the actress fell into the fireplace and hit her head. Vivien Leigh also pulled a Amanda Seyfried and followed Laurence and his wife Jill to Capri. In 1957, after discovering that Olivier was having an affair with Dorothy Tutin, there was a violent argument between Olivier and Leigh. She ended up with a gash over her left eye. Oliver was also a dick. He called Joan Fontaine loathsome and Merle Oberon a silly little amateur. He treated Marilyn Monroe like shit and took pleasure in victimizing her. He was hostile towards his female costars.

Clark Gable
At the age of 23, Loretta Young was pregnant with Clark Gable's child. Gable was married to another woman and Young hid the pregnancy and birth from the public. Clark never acknowledged the child as his own and Young claimed that she adopted the infant. While watching Larry King Live in 1998, Young inquired about the meaning of date rape. After her daughter in law explained the meaning of it, Young claimed that that is what happened between her and Clark Gable. One night when the crew was traveling back to Hollywood by train, Gable came intoner compartment and raped her. Young was humiliated but went on with the show because she knew she'd have to continue working with the star. Clark Gable also was involved in a car accident in which he killed a pedestrian after drunk driving and MGM covered up the accident.

Mark Wahlberg
In 1988, Mark Wahlberg was convicted of assault and charged with attempted murder after he assaulted two Vietnamese-American men while trying to steal two cases of beer. He beat one man unconscious with a five foot stick and punched the other so hard that he is now blind in one eye. Wahlberg also made racial slurs against the two men but insisted his attack wasn't racially charged. At the age of 15, Wahlberg threw rocks at black school children and would yell the n-word at them. Kristyn Atwood, one of the kids he threw the rocks at, said the attack left a scar. He also chased after the kids with his friends while they yelled "kill the n******. Wahlberg is also a homophobic. He called a member of Madonna's entourage a "homo" and punched another in the face. He also admitted to not wanting a role in "Brokeback Mountain" because he was creeped out by the film after reading the script.

John Stamos
In an interview with Jane Magazine, John Stamos admitted to being an accomplice to rape. In the mid 80's, Stamos was in Finland and a woman was interested in him though Stamos wasn't. His friend liked the girl so Stamos brought her back to the hotel. He closed the lights and they started making out. Stamos made up an excuse of having to brush his teeth and sent in his friend in his place. The woman thought she was having sex with Stamos but was actually having sex with his friend.

Ethan Hawke
Uma Thurman's marriage to Ethan Hawke left her self esteem in shambles and called the split excruciating. Hawke hated being married to Thurman because she was too famous. Hawke also said that sex after Thurman had their child felt different and basically said her vagina was loose. Their marriage ended after it was revealed that Hawke was having an affair with Canadian model Jen Perzow. Hawke ended up marrying their former nanny. Hawke also defending cheating on your significant other. He said that being upset over your spouse cheating is like finding a gray hair.

David O. Russell
David O'Russell is a bully on and offset. He also sexually abused his niece. Russell was so aggressive on the set of Three Kings that the second assistant direct quit over his behavior. George Clooney also grabbed Russell by the throat after he started hitting him on the head. On the set of I Heart Huckabees, Russell was abusive towards Lily Tomlim. Video came out of Russell screaming at Tomlin. Russell was also a massive jerk to Amy Adams, one of the nicest people you will ever meet. She was the target of his brutal temper on American Hustle. He was abusive to the point where Christian Bale got in his face and told him to stop acting like an asshole. He also grabbed one man by the collar on the set of the film. Jennifer Lawrence says she can work with Russell because they can "really" talk, man-to-man. She also claims that he really respects and understands women. When Amy Adams was asked about those comments, she responded "if you mean he doesn't treat people like a lady, I can agree with that". When Amy Adams spoke about her experience, she was near tears. He made her life a living hell on set and called the experience devastating. He made her cry almost everyday. Russell also put Christopher Nolan in a headlock (lol I'm srs) because Jude Law dropped out of his film to work on The Prestige. In 2011, Russell's transgender niece filed a report that accused him of groping her. They were at the gym when he offered to help her with ab exercises. Russell asked her about her transition experience and put his hands beneath her shirt and touched both of her breasts. Russell did not deny the incident and said his niece was acting provocative towards him.

ONTD Original: Eminem's History of Violence and Hate

$

Eminem (b. Marshall Mathers) released his ninth album, 'Revival,' on December 15. It features guest spots by such industry heavyweights as Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, and P!nk; beats by such in-demand producers as Emile Haynie (Lana Del Rey's "Love") and Rick Rubin (countless faves), and earned him the cover of Interview magazine's annual Art Issue, where he is interviewed by Sir Elton John. And as discussions of epidemic misconduct by men in Hollywood/politics/every day life, sexual and otherwise, rage on and offline, all of this begs the question, "What the f***?"

For years, the rapper's considerable talent for deeply personal, often complexly structured songwriting (it would be difficult for the most steadfast of detractors to argue the emotional weight of tracks like "Lose Yourself") seem to have supplied him with a Get Out of Jail Free card for many of those same songs' explicit, often graphic homophobia, misogyny and violence. John, who joined Mathers for a performance of "Stan" at the Grammys in 2001 and has counted him as a close personal friend since, weighed in on this during an interview with Zane Lowe earlier in the year, dismissing claims of homophobia on Mathers' part as misrepresentation by "idiots." Mathers himself has been historically evasive when confronted with this interpretation of his lyrics: in a 2010 interview with Anderson Cooper, he blamed "the scene [he] came up in" for introducing terms like "queer" and "f*****" to his vernacular sans context, insisting, "I don't have any problem with nobody."

But despite emphatically denying his hatred of any minority group, Mathers' music continues to paint a different picture. Most recently, lyrics in his new single "Walk On Water" (featuring Beyoncé) have drawn criticism for perpetuating ableist language (Kids look to me as a god, this is retarded) and, in doing so, showcasing a refusal to migrate to the right side of history. Much has changed in society, in popular culture, even in the comment sections of online gossip communities, in the nearly 20 years since 'The Slim Shady LP' and "My Name Is" catapulted Mathers into the public consciousness as hip hop's enfant terrible. In the world of Eminem, 45, however, things have by and large remained the same.

Below, a sampling of his most violent, hateful lyrics - hardly the tip of the iceberg.

"Low Down, Dirty" from 'Slim Shady EP' (1997)
TW for:
necrophilia, child molestation, domestic violence

Jumped out, killed the bitch and did her
Used to let the babysitter suck my d*** when I was littler
[...]
Slap dips, support domestic violence
Beat your b****'s ass while your kids stare in silence

"My Name Is" (#36*) from 'The Slim Shady LP' (1999)
TW for:
violence against women

Got pissed off and ripped Pamela Lee's t**s off, and smacked her
So hard I knocked her clothes backwards like Kriss Kross

"Guilty Conscience" from 'The Slip Shady LP' (1999)
TW for:
date-rape, statutory rape

Now listen to me, while you're kissin' her cheek
And smearing her lipstick, slip this in her drink
[...]
(Yo, this girl's only fifteen years old
You shouldn't take advantage of her, it's not fair)
Yo, look at her bush, does it got hair?
F*** this b**** right here on the spot, bare
Till she passes out and she forgot how she got there

"Kill You" from 'The Marshall Mathers LP' (2000)
TW for:
violence against women, incest, rape

S***, you don't think I won't choke no w****
Till the vocal cords don't work in her throat no more?
[...]
Just bend over and take it like a s*** - okay, Ma?
"Oh, now he's raping his own mother
Abusing a w****, snorting coke
And we gave him the Rolling Stone cover?"

"Kim" from 'The Marshall Mathers LP' (2000)
TW for:
domestic violence

Sit down, b****! You move again
I'll beat the s*** out of you!
Don't make me wake this baby!
She don't need to see what I'm 'bout to do!
[...]
Here, I'll scream with you, "Ah, somebody help!"
Don't you get it, b****? No one can hear you!
Now shut the f*** up and get what's coming to you!

"Cleanin' Out My Closet" (#4) from 'The Eminem Show' (2002)
TW for:
homophobia

I was a baby, maybe I was just a couple of months
My f***** father must have had his panties up in a bunch
‘Cause he split, I wonder if he even kissed me goodbye
No, I don't, on second thought, I just fuckin' wished he would die

"Same Song & Dance" from 'Relapse' (2009)
TW for:
rape, violence against women

Couple rape charges, people think you're a monster
[...]
Hello Lindsay, you're looking a little thin, hun
How 'bout a ride to rehab? Get in, c***
[...]
Slowly she gets in and I begin to lynch her
With 66 inches of extension cord
[...]
C'mon toots, give me the Valium alley-oop
I'll slam dunk it in your mouth 'til you puke
And just as soon as you pass out in your alphabet soup
I'm 'bout to make a new outfit out of you

"Love the Way You Lie" (feat. Rihanna) (#1) from 'Recovery' (2010)
TW for:
domestic violence

Next time I'm pissed I'll aim my fist at the drywall
Next time? There won't be no next time!
I apologize even though I know it's lies
I'm tired of the games, I just want her back
I know I'm a liar, if she ever tries to f*****' leave again
I'ma tie her to the bed and set this house on fire

"Rap God" (#7) from 'The Marshall Mathers LP2' (2013)
TW for:
homophobia

I'll still be able to break a motherf*****' table
Over the back of a couple of f*****s, and crack it in half
[...]
Little gay-looking boy
So gay I can barely say it with a straight face, looking boy
You're witnessing a massacre
Like you're watching a church gathering take place, looking boy
"Oy vey, that boy's gay!", that's all they say, looking boy

"Framed" from 'Revival' (2017)
TW for:
violence against women

But when murdering females
Better pay attention to these details or you could be derailed
Better wear at least three layers of clothing or be in jail
If you get scratched because your DNA'll
Be all up under her fingernails
[...]
I feel somewhat responsible for the dumb little blonde
Girl, that motherf****' baton twirler that got dumped in the pond

Exposed my naked ass, and I did it with a smile
And when it came to sex, I knew I walked the borderline

Had me crucified, you know I had to take you there

ONTD Original™ - Christmas Edition: Make the Yueltide Gayer

$
0
0
Back in 2013, Hallmark caused some controversy when they released a Christmas ornament that switched out "gay" for "fun" when citing the lyrics of "Deck the Halls", because in our overtly-politically correct culture it's too stressful to stare at the word "gay" or perform basic human decency!

But it begs the question – where are our Christmas movies? When will we start getting our own trashy Hallmark gay romcoms? When will Netflix make "A Christmas Princess"? How many years do we gottta wait for trash people to die off and for capitalism to appeal to our demographics as the ice caps melt?

Out of morbid curiousity, I decided to venture out and bring the best (or honestly, least terrible) of them back to you. I had three basic requirements:

  1. If it isn't about Christmas, it has to be at least set around the time period or in the month of December.

  2. It doesn't have to be centrally gay, but it has to have at least one explicitly gay character.

  3. They have to physically speak.

This is part one, focusing on feature films and lower-scale Indie/DTD/TV-Movies. Each category will have ten entries in no particular order of favorability. How did I fare? Is there anything worth watching?
Feature Films:

1

Carol
2015 Romance/Drama 1h58m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal: You know what it is.

Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) spots the beautiful, elegant Carol (Cate Blanchett) perusing the doll displays in a 1950s Manhattan department store. The two women develop a fast bond that becomes a love with complicated consequences.

No matter what other film I started this list off with it simply would've left you wondering,
"Where's Carol? How's Carol doing? I haven't seen her in a while. I wonder if she still wears that green peacock coat I was always jealous of. I wonder if she's as great as I remember." She is and always has been. Time to get reaquainted, y'all. It's the holiday season.

Where you can watch it: Netflix, Amazon.
Warnings: Alcohol, nudity, brief violence, ONTD sympathizing with Harge.

2
The Family Stone
2005 Drama 1h46m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:Thad Stone (Tyrone Giordano) as the gay (and deaf) one in family with Patrick Thomas (Brian J. White) as his partner, interested in adoption.

An uptight, conservative businesswoman accompanies her boyfriend to his eccentric and outgoing family's annual Christmas celebration and finds that she's a fish out of water in their free-spirited way of life.

We've crossed Carol off the list, so it's all downhill from here. Thad and Patrick are supporting characters who play second fiddle to straight romance, Connecticut drama, and the homophobic and racist questions you'd expect, but they're cute and they're there. We're always looking for more reasons to complain about Carrie Bradshaw anyway, so what do you have to lose? For reference, this came out just after Brokeback Mountain.

Where you can watch it: Netflix, Amazon.
Warnings: Alcohol, light violence and sexual content, intense family arguments.

3
Precious
2009 Drama 1h50m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:Precious's mentor Ms. Raines (Paula Patton) is partners with Katherine (Kimberly Russell).

Pregnant by her own father for the second time, 16-year-old Claireece "Precious" Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) can neither read nor write and suffers constant abuse at the hands of her vicious mother (Mo'Nique). Precious instinctively sees a chance to turn her life around when she is offered the opportunity to transfer to an alternative school. Under the patient, firm guidance of her new teacher, Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins the journey from oppression to self-determination.

While Precious isn't entirely set during Christmas, the scene in which it is is very light and moving in an otherwise relentlessly dark and exploitive film (Katherine just apperars in the one scene, you could just search the clip and be good tbh).

Where you can watch it: Netflix, Amazon.
Warnings: Abuse, assault, rape, incest, addiction, what you would expect from a Lee Daniels film.

4

Home for the Holidays
1995 Comedy/Drama 1h44m
Christmas-themed| Set during around Christmas
Gay appeal: Tommy (Robert Downey Jr.) is the gay failure of the family.

When her teenage daughter opts out of Thanksgiving, single mother Claudia Larson (Holly Hunter) travels alone to her childhood home for an explosive holiday dinner with her dysfunctional family. Claudia quickly tires of her parents, her long-suffering sister (Cynthia Stevenson), her snobby brother-in-law (Steve Guttenberg) and her nutty aunt (Geraldine Chaplin).

These people hate each other, but much like the audience with this film, Tommy keeps returning to them for some reason year after year. This is cheating because it's set during Thanksgiving but this post wouldn't exist if I was being strict.

Where you can watch it: Amazon.
Warnings: Homophobia, drugs, alcohol, addiction.

5
C.R.A.Z.Y.
2005 Drama 2h09m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal: The film revoles around closeted gay Zachary (Marc-André Grondin).

Teenager Zachary Beaulieu is confused about his sexuality and is in conflict with his Canadian-Catholic upbringing which alienates his father Gervais and confuses his mother Laurianne. Forcing himself to like girls, Zachary also has to cope with his older brothers, who don't make his life any easier but when he finally accepts his true feelings, will his family still accept him?

Set across three Christmas Eve nights – 1960, 1975, and 1980 – Zachary struggles and eventually comes to terms with his sexuality and his family. Did you have to go so hard though, Canada?

Where you can watch it: Amazon.
Warnings: Abuse, homophobia, alcohol.

6
Breakfast with Scot
2007 Comedy 1h49m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal: ONTD DC TV fave Tom Cavanagh as Eric McNally living with his partner Sam (Ben Shenkmen) and forming a new family with his nephew Scot, a questioning gay child.

Eric lives for all things hockey. Now in his thirties, he's managed to turn his stint as an ex- Toronto Maple Leaf into a full-time gig as commentator for sports TV. He's living the dream! But when Eric's boyfriend Sam announces that they're to become temporary guardians of a young boy, Eric's comfortable world shatters.

Canada owed us something after that last hit, and naturally, it involves hockey. Scot pushes Eric to shake up his life and embrace his sexuality since he's closeted in his work life. This movie is so light and cute. Why aren't you watching it yet?

Where you can watch it: Amazon.
Warnings: None.

7

Un Conte de Noël (A Christmas Tale)
2008 (French) Comedy/Drama 2h32m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:The grandson Paul (Emile Berling) is gay, and Rosaimée (Françoise Bertin) is a lesbian and ex-lover of the grandmother.

When steely French matriarch Junon (Catherine Deneuve) learns she has leukemia, she asks her ungrateful children and grandchildren at the family Christmas gathering to see if they are eligible to become bone marrow donors.

I can feel my gay electrolytes being refueled by this drama already. Full of dark twists, family hijinks, screwball comedy, medical emergencies, near deaths, and closets upon closets of skeltons, this criterion-selected work upends a lot of the simplistic and traditional family stories you've come to expect.

Where you can watch it: Netflix, Amazon.
Warnings: Light sexuality, alcohol, smoking.

8

En Underbar Jävla Jul (Holy Mess)
2015 (Swedish) Comedy 1h48m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal: Centerd around Simon (Anastasios Soulis) and Oscar (Anton Ludqvist) inviting their homophobic family home for the holidays.

A gay couple invites their somewhat homophobic and racist families to meet for the first time during Christmas celebration. And they have a special gift in store for them.

We need to include one more normal movie here before going off the deep end after the French swooped in. Simon and Oscar invited the family to their home to announce a pregancy they've set up with their friend Cissi (Rakel Wärmländer).

Where you can watch it: Not sure.
Warnings: Alcohol. Idk.

9

Some of My Best Friends Are...
1971 Drama 1h50m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:A bunch of LGBT people gather in a gay bar on Christmas Eve.

It's Christmas Eve 1971 in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, and the regulars of the local gay bar "The Blue Jay" are celebrating. Not much has changed since the Stonewall riots, and while the situation is not yet "peace on Earth, good will toward men," the times they are a-changin'.

This isn't so much a "consider watching this for fun" entry so much as a "consider watching this for history" one. The film is infamous for being very grim and depressing, going around to different groups of characters with no guiding central story. It's a demonstration of how much LGBT rep has changed (or in some ways, not) since its release.

Where you can watch it: Youtube.
Warnings: Assault, violence, homophobia, 1971 tragic cliches.

10

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
2011 Mystery/Drama 2h38m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:As we all know, Rooney Mara.

Disgraced financial reporter Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) finds a chance to redeem his honor after being hired by wealthy Swedish industrialist Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) to solve the 40-year-old murder of Vanger's niece, Harriet. Vanger believes that Harriet was killed by a member of his own family. Eventually joining Blomkvist on his dangerous quest for the truth is Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), an unusual but ingenious investigator whose fragile trust is not easily won.

Whether you prefer the Swedish or US adaptations, what better way is there to end annual traditions of wholesome family values then with a conspiracy story about revenge revolving around relatives who literally hate each other to death all living on the same tiny island ft. murder, international intrigue, and Fincher-esque montages of investigation?

Where you can watch it: Netflix, Amazon.
Warnings: Abuse, assault, pedophilia, alcohol, including a graphic rape scene with Lisbeth that you should skip.

Independent/DTD/TV Films:

1

Scrooge and Marley
2012 Comedy 1h31m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:The title.

Scrooge & Marley is a modern variation on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Recounted from a gay sensibility with heart, comedy & music, the magic of Dickens' timeless tale of a man's redemption comes alive from a fresh perspective.

Bob Cratchit is gay in this and has an adoptive family including Tiny Tim. Scrooge's nephew Fred is a lesbian now. Scrooge lives above and runs a gay bar called Screws. Need I go on?

Scrooge has always been gay. We been knew.

Where you can watch it: Youtube, Amazon.
Warnings: Wholesome gay fun.

2

Holiday Heart
2000 Drama 1h40m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:Holiday Heart himself.

Holiday Heart (Ving Rhames / Chandra Currelley) is a homosexual black man who performs as a drag queen at a popular night club in the city. After his boyfriend dies, he befriends a down on her luck, drug addicted, single woman, Wanda (Alfre Woodard) and her young daughter Niki (Jessika Quynn Reynolds, in her film debut). Heart offers them a stable home and becomes a much needed father figure for Niki.

This made-for-TV movie deals with a lot of serious subjects, and its treatment of them is also pretty dated, but its rare to see a character like Holiday in a Christmas movie.

Where you can watch it: Amazon.
Warnings: Abuse, assault, addiction, prostitution, homophobia, drugs, violence.

3

Too Cool for Christmas
2004 Comedy 1h30m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:Brooke Nevin with two gay dads.

A fashion-conscious teen (Brooke Nevin), who would rather spend Christmas with her boyfriend than her two days, gives Santa (George Hamilton) a makeover.

There are two nearly identical versions of this made-for-TV movie: A Very Cool Christmas where she has a father and mother, and Too Cool For Christmas where she has two dads. The writer and director originally had a father and mother, but it was changed to be gay while the straight version was sold to audiences overseas just in case.

Where you can watch it: Amazon for the straight version, but the gay version? Not sure.
Warnings: This erasure rn.

4

24 Nights
1999 Romance/Comedy 1h37m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal: Cheesy gay romcom between Jonathon (Kevin Isola) and Toby (David Burtka).

When Jonathan Parker was 4 years old, his mother's words and a chance encounter with a Salvation Army Kris Kringle instilled in him a lifelong belief in the legend of Santa Claus. Now 24 and his parents long passed away, Jonathan is a spacey, pot-smoking college drop-out and multi loser in romance who has one shot left to find his true love; he writes a letter to Santa Claus. After meeting Toby, a new co-worker just moved to the city, Jonathan is convinced this is the one who was sent for him, even after he meets Toby's long time boyfriend Keith.

One of the earliest gay Christmas movies and certainly romcoms, it might have that low budget, late 90's cheese that you're looking for this time of year.

Where you can watch it: Amazon.
Warnings: None.

5
Red Lodge
2013 Drama 1h18m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:Romantic drama between Jordan (Joseph Kim) and Dave (Rich Pierrelouis).

Red Lodge is a perceptive look at how marriage equality has affected gay relationships. Jordan (Joseph Kim) proposes to Dave (Richard Pierre-Lewis), his boyfriend of two years, expecting an enthusiastic "Yes!" Instead, he gets a, "Can't we just be in love and leave things the way they are?" Hardly the answer our handsome hero was expecting, and not the best timed response either, just before the couple are to spend Christmas with Jordan's kooky Aunt Vanity (Diane Kylander) up in Big Sky country.

This one is told from a flashback perspective on the troubles of Jordan and Daves' relationship. Hold on y'all... we're almost out of the woods.

Where you can watch it: Vimeo.
Warnings: None.

6

Make the Yueltide Gay

But when his boyfriend, Nathan (Adam Ruggiero), shows up at their doorstep unannounced, Gunn must put on a charade to keep the relationship a secret.

This film has been cited as the go-to for gay holiday viewing needs the last several years.

Where you can watch it: Amazon, iTunes.
Warnings: None.

7

Those People
2015 Romance/Drama 1h29m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:Gay love triangle between Charlie (Jonathon Gordon), Sebastian (Jason Ralph), and Tim (Haaz Sleiman).

Charlie (Jonathan Gordon) and Sebastian (Jason Ralph) are childhood best friends now in young adulthood. Charlie is an art student, whose unrequited love for Sebastian influences his art, while Sebastian has been in a state of personal crisis since his wealthy financier father's (Daniel Gerroll) arrest on white collar criminal charges. After moving into Sebastian's apartment to help him through his bouts of depression and alcohol abuse, Charlie is drawn into a love triangle when he meets Tim (Haaz Sleiman), a successful concert pianist.

A story about unrequited love, Charlie can't help but care for his friend Sebastian even though he's a terrible person. Set across four months ending in December, Charlie struggles between letting go of Sebastian and embracing his new romance with Tim.

Charlie is actually Jewish, so an exception to the list! The film is visually beautiful and has a good story, and honestly it looks like if Gossip Girl had a budget and didn't straightwash its book characters so it's right up ONTD's alley IMO. I promise the resolution of the triangle is fine.

Where you can watch it: Amazon, iTunes, Youtube, Google Play, Vudu.
Warnings: Alcohol, depression, emotional abuse.

El Color de un Invierno(A Winter to Remember)
2016 Romance/Drama 1h04m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:Gay coming of age story and romance between Lucia (Cecilia Valenzuela Gioia) and Olivia (Mercedes Burgos).

Twenty-one-year-old Lucia suffers from panic and anxiety attacks. But her chance meeting with Olivia, a budding young artist, while staying with her family during winter break in her hometown of Salta opens Lucia’s eyes to new possibilities. This unexpected romance gives her the strength to confront her past traumas and move forward. From writer-director Cecilia Valenzuela Gioia comes her first feature-length film, about self-discovery and self-acceptance. A WINTER TO REMEMBER may just make you want to fall in love all over again.

This Argentian film is a sweet coming of age story, and recent film school graduate Cecilia's directing debut, starring herself!

This literally has nothing to do with Christmas (it is set in December so not totally cheating) but I think ONTD might wanna know about it, plus it's important rep, has "winter" in the title, and I'm literally out of options.

Where you can watch it: I literally have no idea, I've seen on DVD outside of the US so good luck, but it still seems to be touring film festivals. It's Out There, somewhere, though. I Want To Believe.
Warnings: The pain of not being able to watch it anywhere.

Didn't make the cut for whatever reason:
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Mysterious Skin, The Houseboy, Rent, Jenny's Wedding, Love Actually (for its cut tragic lesbian romace lmao and the changed gay storyline from the original script fuck you),and a few others.

Prompt ONTD: If you could make any LGBT Christmas film, what would it be?

Also: Did I miss anything? Any favorites or recommendations?

Part 2: TV and more, coming soon... (I promise it'll be much more diverse I had barely anything to work with here)

ONTD Original Fun Post: Celebrating Brittany Murphy's Life

Brittany Murphy, who would have turned 40 last month, died 8 years ago today, December 20. While this post will touch up on her death for the sake of context, the main focus will be her life: her own personal 'clueless' moments, the men who have come and gone, the women who have stayed, and much more. ♡

"I’ve done many videos of the Metuchen Country Fair in New Jersey. The most memorable moment was when this little girl, Brittany Murphy, who came up to Ryk Schoonhiem in this Oct. 20th, 1990 clip and asked him “Would you like a children’s perspective?” She had so much life and energy that I told Ryk to hand the mic over to her. This video was taken before she became a famous Television star. Wouldn’t TMZ love to get their hands on this tape. Google her name and see for yourself how much of a name she made for herself. You’ll see her multiple times on the David Letterman Show. Same happy bubbly personality. May her soul rest in peace."—Carl K. Sylvester

Brittany Murphy's Clueless Moments

“When I went to the Clueless premiere, I didn’t know about stylists, so I got my own dress and wore red lipstick because I thought it was glamorous. It wore off in two seconds.” —Brittany Murphy (Cosmopolitan, September 2004 issue)

Brittany presented an award at the 2013 Independent Spirit Awards, where she had a 102° fever and her co-presenter had called in sick. On top of that? The teleprompter broke.

"It was just awful. I remember at one point I looked at Halle Berry like, 'what do I do? Save me!' I started telling jokes: 'two peanuts are walking down the street in Manhattan—one's assaulted.'"—Brittany Murphy (Seventeen Magazine, September 2003)

From A Virgin Who Can't Drive to Hollywood Sex Symbol

Jane Magazine writes in an article, "people generally remember Tai as having a waist as thick as her Jersey accent, but she was actually pretty small. It's just that the character wore unflattering clothes."

"Since 'Clueless', the only thing different is that my teeth are shorter because I had them bonded. I've never even told anybody about that. But you know, I've always metamorphosized, from changing my eyebrows to changing my hairline-shape. [...] I have broken my nose three times, though. But I've never gotten it fixed. I know that changed the shape of it, but it made it wider. When you break your nose, you can actually move it back into place, unless it's shattered. So any time I've broken my nose, I've moved it back into place myself."—Brittany Murphy (Jane Magazine,
April 2005
)

In later years, Brittany Murphy did lose quite a bit of weight (reportedly due to being self-conscious about her 5'3" height, wanting to be thinner to appear taller on screen), got lip injections, and either breast implants or a lift. Her thinner frame and quirky personality (new to those just discovering her, despite evidence showing she has been bubbly since childhood) lead to multiple rumours of a cocaine addiction, to which Brittany responded, "for the record, I've never tried cocaine in my entire life."

Brittany would eventually go back to her brunette roots after filming Love and Other Disasters.

It was for a film role, actually. It was for a role and I decided to keep it. It was a keeper, I really - I just, I feel more like myself. Time for a change.

Since then, she went back and forth from blonde to brunette, but her last days were spent in darker hair.

Speaking of Love and Other Disasters...

Her most publicized relationship was with Ashton Kutcher. They started dating during the filming of Just Married in 2003, but it admittedly didn't last very long. Ashton Kutcher has said that he saw Brittany two months before her death at a casting for a role he wanted to see her in, but the two didn't remain close after their break-up.

"She was like the person who walked in the room and she was always the first person to dance. You know when you go to a party and everybody is standing around, and the music is going — and you know sooner or later everyone is going to dance. She was always the first person to dance. And I just try to connect to that and celebrate who she was and how she was, and not make sense of [her death], 'cause there is no sense of making sense of it."—Ashton Kutcher

Brittany herself described their relationship as, "well, watch Just Married and take away the happy ending. Our relationship wasn't too different from that."

Kutcher posted about Brittany Murphy on Twitter on the day of her death:

Before Ashton, however, Brittany Murphy cozied up to another co-star from another film, 8 Mile; Eminem, who taught Brittany Murphy how to give the middle finger. While the two weren't in any confirmed relationship, Brittany awkwardly and hilariously let it slip on Letterman that the two did have a fling (starts at 3:33)

Sadly, having an absent father who was in prison for 12 years of her life anyway, Brittany's flop taste in men didn't begin and end with Eminem.

Her husband, Simon Monjack, was the eclipse to Brittany's light. He passed 5 months after Brittany Murphy from the exact same cause that took her: pneumonia.

Simon Monjack was a conman who took advantage of the juvenile package that was Brittany Murphy. Alex Ben Block (friend of Brittany Murphy) writes:

It was wonderful that Brittany never lost her childlike innocence and sense of wonder, or that infectious giggle. But what worked for her as an actress made for a troubled life: She never learned to drive or balance her own checkbook. She looked to her mother, business managers and finally Simon to care for her. It was the need for a father — her biological father was rarely part of her life — mentor, teacher and anchor that led her to Simon.

- TW: drug use ahead -

Brittany Murphy lacked a higher education and often looked to Simon for his 'expert' opinions. Unfortunately, this included prescription drugs. It is believed that Simon advised Brittany to doctor shop and keep a low, nearly-anonymous profile on their prescription purchases. She became reliant on prescription drugs to cope with her many physical illnesses, and Simon's 'words of wisdom' left her as paranoid as he was.

Simon had created a web of paranoia around Brittany and used it to separate her from anyone who might have challenged his dominance.

L.A. clinical psychologist and attorney, Rex Beaber, called what happened to Brittany in reference to Simon Monjack, "an age-old story you see commonly with people who meet narcissistic personalities and people who are sociopathic. They have a kind of blood instinct for the weakness of people around them."

Girls Are a Girl's Best Friend

Brittany Murphy was nothing if not a girls' girl. She never had a falling out with any of her woman companions, never gave the tabloids any 'catfight' fuel, nor was she ever (publicly) done wrong by a woman.

So here's a shout-out to some lovely ladies that touched Brittany's heart in ways a man never could.

Special Mention: Winona Ryder

Winona wearing a belt that says "MURPHY".

"I can't watch the movie now because of Brittany Murphy. She kills herself in the movie. I was very close to her before she died."

"[Filming 'Girl, Interrupted'] was sort of wonderful. I liked working with everybody; forget the fact that it was all actresses and all women — which is inspiring in the fact that there was a script that had so many amazing roles for young women — they were extraordinary artists and extraordinary humans, so I learned a lot about them in a humane manner and I learned a lot about them, on camera, in an artistic manner on all the counts that can't possibly be wrong. It was fantastic!"—Brittany Murphy interviewed at the 'Girl, Interrupted' premiere

ONTD Original™ - Christmas Edition: Make the Yueltide Gayer Pt. 2

The holidays can be rough, ONTD. Between 2017 coming to the ends of the earth for us all and having to deal with family issues, the holidays can bring as much trouble as joy, if not more so. The Christmas specials we watch every year often tell tales of a group of outcasts, whether it's literally titled"The Island of Misfit" Toys ft. a flamboyant elf dentist, a gay lumberjack, and a red-nosed reindeer from Rudolph or Community's chosen family, including Abed, shown above.

But rarely do those allegories render into reality with LGBT people: after all, where are our Christmas narratives?

In part one of this series, I tried to any whiff of gayness in Christmas or barely Christmas-related films and indie films and bring them back to ONTD. As a reminder, I had three basic requirements:

  1. If it isn't about Christmas, it has to be at least set around the time period or in the month of December

  2. It doesn't have to be centrally gay, but it has to have at least one explicitly gay character.

  3. They have to physically speak.

This is part two, focusing on television and short films/web series. Each category will have ten entries in no particular order of favorability. Did I fare better this time?

Cruz noted the similarties between the character and himself, saying,"I can play him as honestly as I can to what I went through, how I reacted to those things." He also recalled the lack of support he found in the media: "I would turn on the TV and think,'Please, give me a sign that I fit in somewhere, that I'm not alone out here.'"

Warnings: Blood.

7

Kissing Walls: Season One
2016 Romance/Comedy 30m
Christmas-themed| Set during Christmas
Gay appeal:Revolves around James and Cameron, two queer men of color, and their friends.

Kissing Walls is a 3-part comedy that explores work, sex, and frienship between queer 20-somethings living in Chicago.

“There are many people in this country who have zero regard for the LGBT community, people of color, and every intersection in between. They don’t want to watch a show like Kissing Walls, and they don’t want you to watch it either. But every obstacle Kissing Walls has faced has only affirmed its necessity as a series. Art remains one of our most powerful tools against oppression. We must continue to demand these stories and continue to demand adequate representation both in front of and behind the camera. I’m entering the new year with this knowledge: making television is hard. Making television about queer people of color is harder. But I think a series like Kissing Walls is worth fighting for!”

– Zak Payne, writer and director of Kissing Walls.

Unfortunately, just earlier this month, the series failed to gather enough funding for a second season, even though they were planning on it and it sounded great.

I’m sure that you've already re-watched this beloved holiday classic multiple times this December. Hosted by early-oughts icon, Jessica Simpson, and failed Ohio weed kingpin, Nick Lachey, this dada romp is surely the crowning jewel of many illegally recorded VHS collections.

The festivities begin with a lighthearted sketch in which Nick & Jessica pretend to be middle class saddos, before Christmas magic transports them back to their lavish reality. There is a joke about how Jessica thinks eggnog is whole eggs smashed in a bowl. Remember when she thought chicken was a fish or whatever? More like Jessica Simpleton.

Jessica spends the majority of Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson's Family Christmas Special changing into increasingly elaborate costumes. Nick also demonstrates his fashion prowess, with looks ranging from “dad in an Old Navy ad” to “dad in an LL Bean ad.”

One of the many harsh lessons I have learned this year is how thoroughly our dear president had saturated pop culture even before his bid for office. Nothing compares to the sensation of having a beloved show or movie interrupted by some unexpected reminder of this blessed presidency.

In a searing parody of Trump's erstwhile reality television gig, Nick dons the iconic wig in order to judge a panel of elves.

Jessica sings “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” in a sultry manner that would suggest she is uncomprehending of the fact that she is singing from the perspective of a small child. Apparently this was her go-to holiday move.

Another skit, an ad for Nick’s Lickable Underarm Deodorant, is best summed up by what my friend said after I forced her to watch it: which SNL writer got fired and wrote this?

Later inNick Lachey & Jessica Simpson's Family Christmas Special, Jessica’s attempt to promote her actual, real Christmas album is cut short by a song from Nick’s fake Boxing Day album. I'm not sure what the point of this is, except to suggest that Nick’s floundering career was being kept aloft solely by the business savvy of his wife. A sly attempt by Jessica to undermine her reputation as the dummy in the relationship?

Nick’s band, 98°, comes to the door begging for a Christmas reunion. Jessica makes a flimsy excuse to leave so as not to be subjected to it. If only we viewers were so lucky!

While the boys sing a song that I did not listen to, Jessica hops around her yard catching snowflakes. She accidentally gets her tongue stuck to a pole, because stupidity as a personal brand was fashionable in 2004. When Nick comes to laugh at her predicament, she spitefully attaches his tongue to the pole as well. Some randos standing in their yard (are these supposed to be fans? paps? the audience? IDFK) demand that Nick and Jessica sing for their amusement, and for some reason they actually attempt to do so. It is off-putting and their fake tongues look nast.

My favorite part of Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson's Family Christmas Special would have to be the announcer's descent into frantic hyperbole. His promises become increasingly outlandish with each ad break, desperate to keep viewers from drifting away like so many snowflakes past Jessica’s waiting tongue. His lies perhaps peak with his insistence that Jessica’s duet with Brian McKnight is, “one of the greatest of all time.”

Jessica and Nick also do a duet with some stock footage of Bing Crosby.

Jessica and Ashlee perform a song ("live together for the FIRST TIME!!" the announcer repeatedly reminds us) after some deeply awkward banter about how their mom was crushed by a Christmas tree or something. This leads us to the most confounding aspect of Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson's Family Christmas Special - the involvement of their actual, non-famous family. Random relatives crop up interstitially throughout, recounting heartwarming tales of Christmas mischief.

This cousin regales us with the story of an epic wrapping paper battle.

Grandma & Grandpa Simpson can’t quite hide her bemusement over the whole affair.

Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson's Family Christmas Special ends when thirty-five of Nick & Jessica’s closest relatives are reunited onstage for some carols, hugs and chitchat. They crush Nick under a pile of outerwear. It's so funny.

I realize that through the rosy veil of nostalgia,Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson's Family Christmas Specialprobably seems like a masterpiece. But let’s take a look at how it was recieved by the public at the time:

Why Can't Western News Outlets Accurately Report on the Passing of a Korean Pop Star?

Trigger Warning for mentions of suicide and depression.

As many of you might already be aware, a popular Korean singer by the name of Kim Jonghyun from the K-pop group SHINee has passed away this week. ONTD members have been talking about his death in posts here and here

Jonghyun's passing made international news as fans across the world mourned. However, many large western news outlets have published reports on the singer's death with inaccurate information and downright offensive mistakes that have caused some people to wonder why western news outlets are seemingly incapable of accurately reporting on the death of a Korean pop star. Is it racism, laziness, or downright incompetence (or perhaps a combination of all three)?

Below, you will find several examples of the media making egregious mistakes regarding relatively easy to verify information.

1) NBC Chicago plays footage of BTS while talking about SHINee
NBC Chicago received a lot of heat from fans after they reported on Jonghyun's death by playing footage of RM of K-pop group BTS being interviewed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Many wondered if it was simply a mix-up or if it was a disrespectful decision in which the two K-pop groups were lumped together since they are both Korean. However, in the footage they played, you can clearly hear RM introduce himself as such, and the interview BTS did with Ellen is clearly labeled on The Ellen Show Youtube channel as, "Ellen Makes 'Friends' With BTS!"

At no point is SHINee or Jonghyun mentioned in the video that NBC uses to report on the late singer and yet they clearly have the two confused since they say SHINee appeared on The Ellen Show and The American Music Awards (they didn't - that was BTS). They also mispronounce Jonghyun's name during broadcast.

2) The Guardian refers to Jonghyun's grieving sister as an "overwrought fan"

While The Guardian reported on Jonghyun's December 21 funeral procession, they captioned a photo of the singer's grieving sister as an "overwrought fan". The mistake has since been corrected.

They have since fixed the caption to correctly read that it is his sister (although they could have included her name, Kim So Dam). However, as of making this post, they are still reporting that he was found dead in his apartment (it was not his home, he rented a separate apartment).

3) The NME seemingly makes stuff up

When music site, NME, reported on the passing of Jonghyun, their article was filled with bizarre inaccuracies that left some wondering where they got their information from since it was beyond incorrect and seemingly made up.

They report:
"After a four-year hiatus began in 2013, the band reformed earlier this year, with Jonghyun being the only original member in a new line-up."

SHINee released 3 albums in 2013 (2 Korean and 1 Japanese), a Japanese release in 2014, and another Korean album in 2015 which contained their hit song, "View," with lyrics penned by Jonghyun. There was no "four-year hiatus."

SHINee has also had the same original line-up since their debut in 2008 - there have been no member changes at any point in their career. Jonghyun, Minho, Taemin, Onew, and Key have always been the five members to make up the group. This isn't disputed and it's easily available information, so how did NME get it so wrong?

They, too, are reporting that Jonghyun was found in his home despite the fact that he rented a separate apartment and was not found in his primary residence. The BBC seems to be one of the few outlets making the distinction between "his apartment" and "an apartment".

It is also of note that there are only 2 comments on the article, both of which point to the author's mistakes. NME apparently can't be bothered to correct their story as the mistakes still exist as of making this post (4 days after NME initially published their inaccurate story).

4. Philip DeFranco uses someone else's photo when discussing Jonghyun's passing

While Philip DeFranco is not a reputable major news outlet like The Guardian or NBC, there is no doubt that many young people these days get their news online from sources like DeFranco's YouTube channel. With 5.8 million subscribers, it can be argued that he has a duty to do his research to accurately report on the situations he's covering.

The photo in the upper left-hand corner of DeFranco's video is not SHINee's Jonghyun and is instead a singer by the name of JR (whose real name is also Kim Jonghyun), a member of another K-pop group called Nu'est. DeFranco has seemingly made a similar error as NBC Chicago in mistaking one Korean for another.

While international media outlets have been following the story, many have failed to get simple details correct. It raises the question: Why are western media outlets struggling to accurately report on the death of a Korean pop star? Thoughts, ONTD?
