Hi J-Pop listeners of ONTD, it’s time to feel ancient again! One of the biggest stars of 00s J-Pop, Koda Kumi is currently celebrating her 25th anniversary! The actual date is December 6th of this year, when TAKE BACK will have been released 25 years ago. But last week, Kuu has just released her latest best album, LIVE IN METAVERSE ~THE BEST~. So I thought it would be fun to rank Kuu's most iconic songs (or more like MVs?) out of her excessive discography!
10. Get Up & Move!! (from Black Cherry)
Booty shake it like what💃Going down like uh🪩This is for the party people💃For the party people🪩
9. Cherry Girl (from Cherry Girl / Unmei)
Kuu as a Catwoman(-esque)! I feel like this is one of her underrated songs, a nice balance between cute and sexy.
8. Get It On (from OUT WORK & COLLABORATION BEST)
The full version of Introduction to the second session. Forever bitter that this song doesn’t get an MV it deserves!
7. Ima Sugu Hoshii (from BEST ~second session~)
Soooo many great songs from the 12-week consecutive releases! This has very explicit lyrics for J-Pop mainstream at the time, and quite sexy MV too! I guess it has a little bit of a comedic element, but I'm still surprised this wasn't age-restricted lol. Love Kuu's rap at the end!
6. D.D.D. feat. SOULHEAD (from BEST ~second session~)
This song is a bop, but ngl if we see her doing this in the current J-Pop (or even in the 2010s), she’d get cancelled right then right there. I’ll let the covers speak for itself lmao
5. JUICY (from 4 hot wave)
Also surprised that this MV wasn't age-restricted, either. I still remember the first time I showed the MV to my classmates in 2007. The way we all gasped when they dropped it low 🤣
4. BUT (from BUT / Aishou)
I’ll have to confess, BUT wasn’t my cup of tea. Still isn’t now, but I can see why this song is so iconic. Reminds me of early Lady Gaga or Fergie in a way.
3. HOT STUFF feat. KM-MARKIT (from secret)
The dance battle is just so damn cool! I think this is the start of her Ero-Kakkoi image.
2. real Emotion (from real Emotion / 1000 no Kotoba)
The song that makes Kuu world famous. Some might prefer 1000 no Kotoba (which was, unfortunately, has a license problem with Square Enix--so she’s not the owner of this song), but real Emotion has always been that girl to me. :')
✨🪩1. TABOO🪩✨ (from TRICK)
The song that united all the gays. Hands down the most ever bestest song she has released to date. I’ll go as far as saying that J-Pop wouldn’t be the same without TABOO tbh!

My gosh do I miss 00s era of J-Pop lol. The list above are songs that I think are iconic, but I think my fave songs have always been ballad centric, like feel, Pearl Moon, magic, and you. ONTD, what is/are your fave Kuu song(s)? Fave era?
Also I know I’ve been submitting a lot of posts lately, sorry for the spamming! I’ve got way too many ideas in my draft even though there’s only 3 people reading it lmao. If you’ve made it this far, thank you so much! All the best.
