ontd original: predicting the box office runs of WB movies in a non-pandemic 2021

It was a tossup between you and my blog getting this, so A Winner Is You. Let's imagine the theatrical runs of Warner's 2021 slate if they hadn't created a brand new release model this past week.

Franchisez (with a  'z' to be kewl)
"The Suicide Squad", "Matrix 4"

I wonder if Margot Robbie had a deal for a certain % of "Birds of Prey".  I'm pretty sure Gunn did (for TSS). ONTDers may be united in thinking he deserves nothing. I saw the first one in the theaters over the "Ben Hur" remake (Which I still have not seen in full) and regretted it. I can't say I would feel more positively toward seeing this one in theaters, especially not with Dave Petinson.

Matrix 4 already had a pretty sweet cast wrap party, but we weren't privvy to that. Kind of wish I could see that word-vomit fake binary green on the big screen, but isn't that the real Matrix experience? Pirating it and watching it on a tiny screen?

I'm not here to say "Oh award bait drama doesn't deserve a theatrical release" - Cinema is an important experience, and if you have the money to back it up, you should be seen in a big room, where All Eye(s/z) are On You.

I have no idea if 'Newark' would be award bait as I have never seen "The Sopranos". It kind of fills that niche of 'people who would totally go see and be on their phones all the damn time."

Will Smith is proabbly angling for an Oscar with "Richard". It would have a limited release, then go wide on Christmas.

"Black Messiah" had the potential to go either way; Either as a 'Poignant discussion' or people wouldn't see it bc 'iT dIviDeS AmErIca!!"

This is the first time I'm reading the synopsis for TWWMD and...that's interesting. Definitely seems like something that would be a fair mid-budget hit. It may be a loss to not see that on the big screen.

Reminiscense seems like a lot of dead wife hand-wringing and tech. I swear this movie has been made about 5 times. I don't think you'll be losing a lot by watching this in your home.

"Things" sounds like a mid level movie your father would watch on a Sunday and fall asleep halfway through, so it's that mid-budget movie that would do fairly well in a theater. Oh ew, J*red L*to is in it.

There's fun in watching a horror at home and in the theater, but after 3 of these movies, does anyone think the Warrens won't solve the problem?

"Malignant" Might have been a sleeper horror hit making 70$m on a 5$ budget or whatever.

Legendary Fuckup
"Godzilla vs. Kong", "Dune"

Strike up the bland: Somehow, the fourth entry in the lackluster Monsterverse going direct to streaming (lbr, it's direct to streaming. I know there's a simultanious release to theaters but is anyone gonna bother besides 3 people in the US) is just where this sad franchise was headed.

I liked Godzilla more than most. I think Skull Island was...a thing that happened. I didn't even know KOTM had come out until I saw it on TV.

This was not supposed to be a rant on how deeply disappointed i was by this franchise, excuse me;

It would have come out, went to #1 for a week, and everybody would forget about it.

There has been countless discussions on how "Dune" was not going to be a smash simply because of the material. More people are probably likely to see that one at home, so that might be a blessing in disguise.

Fans would have liked it on the big screen, but who else was taking a chance on it?

Oh yes; Timmy Stans, Zendaya Stans, Oscar Stans...shit, well.

I do feel bad for Legendary. All that money pumped into co-producing these, Warner wouldn't sell GvK to Netflix for a hefty amount, and this happens.

For the Kids (ONTD Hates)
"Tom and Jerry" "Space Jam 2: A New Legacy"

Space Jam 2 will probably benefit greatly; After all, parents probably saw the original, they can make a movie night out of it and watch two bad but iconic films in a row. Kids can ask who Michael Jordan is. It would be a win/win.

Tom and Jerry, well, at least the parents can put it on in the background and go to a Zoom meeting. If you were desperate to get Mykynnlynzie and Jehyhehehden out of the house for 2 hours, it was worth it to you.

Sir Not Appearing In this Post Because it "Comes Out" in a Month and There is No Promo For it
"Mortal Kombat"

It'll be pushed back to 2022 under the guise of "The FIRST of our movies to go back to the established model."

it'll probably suck, but hey *deep breath* MORTAL KOMMMMMBAAAAAAT.

The One I'm Sad Isn't getting a Traditional Release
"In The Heights"

*Is directed by JON M. CHU based upon Lin Manuel-Miranda's Broadway play. So many people are reporting it as if LMM is directing. He isn't.

With that out of the way, I'm really sad I won't be able to see this in the theater. Not because I know the music - I know the opening only - but because this would have had a beautiful run akin to "Crazy Rich Asians". It would have given mainstream represntation to the biggest group of moviegoers in the US (Hispanics).

Disney had no qualms with shoving most of its POC and WOC led films to D+ for this year (and Artemis Fowl), but this one is particularly bumming me.

I think I forgot one movie that might fall under "Thrillers" or "Bait".
