Nordic pop music has seen great surge in popularity in the last decade, with female pop stars leading the way. In Norway the music scene is booming with female artists, with artists like AURORA, Sigrid, and Astrid S also reaching international success. But the truth is the norwegian music scene has been and still is extremely white, and WOC are hard to come by as labels haven't invested in them up until recently where we see a ton of new talent getting signed. Norway has a lot of great WOC musicians, and while some are well known within our borders they seldom reach the international fame of their white peers. Join me on this small journey and find your new favorite artist that you didn't know before!
Lil Halima
Since her debut EP love songs for bad lovers in 2018 Lil Halima has been keeping busy releasing a LOT of music, all of which are great. And as her discography has grown, Norway has grown more and more enthralled by her honest lyrics, toned down production and silky smooth voice over the years. Check out some other highlights under the spoiler, and visit her Spotify page because she has way too much to include in this post.
Amanda Delara
23 year old Amanda Delara(It's her birthday today!) is an iranian-norwegian artist from Oslo. Her first single Paper Paper came out in 2017 and while reaching moderate success in Norway, it was her remix of Karpe Diem's(most famous rap duo in Norway) Gunerius that shot her into fame. You can watch a live version of it above, turn on english lyrics to hear her singing about racial differences growing up in Oslo. Her latest norwegian album Et Lite Stykke Norge was praised by critics and the public, cementing her status in Norwegian pop music. I included some of her english songs behind the spoiler cut if you want to hear more(please do she's great).
Myra
The Norwegian rap scene is oversaturated with men, and Myra is a refreshing addition. She has released singles since 2017, building up hype for her debut album which is expected to be released soon. Rapping in Norwegian, she may not reach the international super stardom she deserves right away, but her flow and production is more than enough to bop to. Enjoy more songs from the most prominent Black female rapper in Norway below the spoiler!
Kamara
21 year old Kamara is predicted to be the next big thing in Norway by several outlets. She dropped her debut single Don't Call My Name in the summer of 2019, and was a finalist to Årets Urørt(an award for the best unsigned artists in Norway). When she steps on stage she brings an energy that is so infectious that she was signed to three of the biggest festivals in Norway with just two songs on Spotify. Corona may have halted her takeoff a little, but Kamara is sure to soar high whenever she decides to. I included her other released song under the spoiler below.
Siri Black
One of 2020's brightest new stars, Siri Black bursted onto the Norwegian scene with her debut single Stop Calling (under the spoiler) earlier this year. On her latest single Finna Eat, she sings about changing the game and burning down the patriarchy(we stan). She will release her debut album in 2020, and those with taste are impatiently waiting.
Stella Mwangi
Stella Mwangi has seen success in Kenya, Senegal and Gambia as well as in Norway. She represented Norway in Eurovision in 2011 with the song Haba Haba. She's the most established artist on this list, having released music for well over a decade. While her electro-pop infused with african drums can sometimes cross the line to feel dated, she mainly releases bop after bop. Have your quarantine party to the songs under the spoiler.
