ONTD Original: 15 YA Novels Being Adapted By Netflix For 2020

With Disney Plus and Apple TV's launches, the Streaming Wars are hitting new levels. Netflix, which mostly had hits with its teen content '13 Reasons Why', 'The Kissing Booth' and 'To All The Boys I've Loved Before' is set on furthering its YA catalog with more adaptations to come. Here's a list of all the adaptations of YA books announced so far with some of them already filming for a 2020 release date.

Sarah Dessen's This Lullaby, Along For The Ride and Once and For All



The recently controversial YA contemporary romance 'icon' Sarah Dessen has 3 of her novels' adaptations in works at Netflix. The streaming giant has chosen 'This Lullaby', 'Along For the Ride' and 'Once and For All' to be adapted as TV movies. Dessen previously had 2 of her novels blended together ('That Summer' and 'Someone Like You') for a movie adaptation called 'How To Deal' with Mandy Moore starring in it.

Along For The Ride spins the tale of Auden West who has difficulty to sleep after her parents divorced. She gets a chance to spend a carefree summer at her father's house with his new family where she gets a job at a clothing shop. There she meets fellow insomniac Eli who can't sleep either after his friend died.

This Lullaby is about teen girl Remy who lost faith in relationships after watching her mother getting married five times. However, her perspective changes when she meets bad boy Dexter.

Once and For All is about teen girl Louna who lost faith in relationships after seeing her mother, a famous wedding planner, working on different weddings and having her heart broken. However, her perspective changes when she meets serial dater Ambrose.


Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse



Announced back in January 2019 and now starting filming with a diverse cast headlined by Narnia star Ben Barnes, the new TV series will mesh together Leigh Bardugo's 'Shadow and Bone' trilogy and 'Six of Crows' duology.

Shadow & Bone follows the adventures of Alina Starkov, an orphan with a much sought-after power as she becomes a Grisha (S&D word for witch) and navigates in a Russia-inspired martial world. Six of Crows is set in the same world as S&D but follows 17 years old criminal genius Kaz Brekker as he attempts to rescue an important Shu (= Chinese) scientist who made a groundbreaking discovery.

Stephanie Perkins' There's Someone Inside Your House



Stephanie Perkins' YA thriller is in the works at Netflix and will be adapted into a movie. There's Someone Inside Your House tells the story of Makani Young who, after fleeing a dark secret back in Hawaii and moving to her grandmother's Nebraskan town, is forced to confront her old demons when her schoolmates are brutally murdered. Oh, and there's that new mysterious guy called Ollie Larson she's pining on. Pretty Little Liars-The Perfectionists star Sidney Park is set to play Makani Young. The movie is slated to be released in 2020.

Shea Ernshaw's The Wicked Deep



Shea Ernshaw's debut 'The Wicked Deep' has been optioned by Netflix and will be adapted into a movie. The Wicked Deep is set in a town where young boys get drowned every year and everyone believes it's due to the Swan sisters, a trio of witches who were themselves drowned 200 years ago. They're rumored to possess three weak-minded girls each year and set them to drown boys so they can get revenge. Teen girl Penny Talbot has the key to the town's mystery and is determined to save new boy Bo Carter from the witchy sisters.

Jennifer Niven's All The Bright Places



Jennifer Niven's YA hit 'All The Bright Places' will soon be hit the screens of Netflix users. Adapted into a movie, the story, reminiscent of John Green's The Fault in Our Stars, is about two teens with suicidal tendencies: Theodore Finch and Violet Markey. They both team up for a school project to find the 'natural wonders' of their state while counting the days til they commit suicide. Elle Fanning will play Violet Markey and Paper Towns star Justice Smith Theodore Finch. The movie is slated for a 2020 release.

Thomas Wheeler's Cursed



Thomas Wheeler's Cursed TV show has been in works at Netflix before the book was even out. The screenplay writer retells the Arthurian legend in this novel where the famous sword Excalibur doesn't choose Arthur but a black witch called Nimue. She teams up with a mercenary called Arthur and refugee Fey folk from England to slay the corrupt king. 13 Reasons Why's alumna Katherine Langford has been casted as Nimue and the TV show will premiere in 2020.

Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and the BFG and more



Roald Dahl's classic novels have been optioned by Netflix for future movie retellings. The classics include Charlie and The Chocolate Factory and its sequel, Matilda, The BFG, The Twits and more. No more info have been shared on these projects so stay tuned!
